Night waited....and waited. And then he saw Lacie come out and jumped up as the girl came towards him.

"Lacie!" He sounded so relieved as he hugged her back. Thank goodness, that was one of them...."Aurian?!!?" He saw her to as she slipped out from the shadows. He kept a firm grip on the younger reaper female before looking to the older one. "Aurian, were..were Vaith and Mai with you?" He frowned as he looked to the cave mouth.

And then he saw Note, the noise dragon he knew Vaith kept with him at all times. He blinked as he waited for the reaper to come through, and his tail swished in annoyance. Where was the leader for their group? Where was Vaith and Mai?

"Lacie...Does Note-" He started as Note started to dissipate in her hands, a final red eyed look to him and Lacie His ears fell in defeat. His whole body almost seemed to give before he took her hand. "Come one...we have to leave.." He held her hand tight and pretended that there wasn't tears in his eyes. That he, Aurian and Lacie would be the only ones that came out of the cave. "We have to leave before they find us too...." His hand went to pull her up as the blue wisp came out and he knew for sure....

Mai and Vaith were really gone. But at least they had gone together....

His tears fell for Vaith and Mai, and he hoped bitterly this was all a horrible dream or facade.

Lacie quickly turned around at the sound of someone.. or something approaching. To her relief, it was Vaith's dragon. She couldn't stand up quickly enough, pushing herself away from Night, and running towards it to catch the little creature.

Note was their hope. Lacie firmly believed it. But when the dragon dissipated, just barely, upon falling into her hands.. Lacie could only look on. It didn't register in her mind, not immediately, that the familiar was gone. She was left to stare in shock. When she finally grasped the reality, the reaper's golden eyes widened.

"NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!" She fell to the ground, her gloved hands clutching the sides of her head. Tears streamed down her cheeks. This wasn't real. This was all a bad dream. Vaith didn't die. Mai was still going to come out. But somewhere inside of her, she knew they wouldn't.

She hadn't done anything to help them. In the end, no matter how hard she tried, she was helpness. She was too weak. Her fingers clutched at the folds of her skirt. What had she done? All she had done was to blindly run. And because of her, they had died.

In response to Night, "I can't." She sobbed. How could she leave them behind? Guilt and regret swamped her mind.

"Vaith and Mai...?" Aurian echoed Night. Her eyes widened. "No, weren't they... They're not with you?" Clearly not, if Night was asking, Aurian berated herself. She turned back to the cave entrance. "Are they still - ? Should we - ?"

They should go back, Aurian thought. She couldn't bear the thought of leaving Mai and Vaith behind, especially not to Hunters. There were a lot of terrible rumours floating about the school concerning what Hunters did to students that they captured. She couldn't tell which were true, but Aurian didn't want any of them happening to her best friends.

"Oh, Note!" Aurian voice was high with relief as the familar-looking familiar flew into view. That surely meant that Vaith was alright. He was just sending Note so that he knew where they were, surely. Aurian moved closer to Lacie, beaming all the while. Her smile began to fade when Note did. "No... no!" she cried. Grasping for Note with one hand, Aurian's fingers met nothing but air.

Aurian froze. She was a Reaper - she knew all about familiars and what that kind of a disappearance (so different to Note melding back into Vaith's tattoo markings) meant. Breaths hitched and turned to sobs. "No," she cried again, but quietly. Tears fell, ignored, not even wiped at.

Far, far too late, Aurian summoned her weapon. Planting one blade against the ground, she leaned against it, forehead to the cool metal of the second blade. When she felt more composed, she turned her stony, tear-streaked face to Lacie and Night.

"What should we do?" she asked, voice hoarse and dark. "Should we run? Or should we avenge them?"

In Aurian's head, the only reason that Mai wouldn't be with them right now was if the ghostly ghoul had suffered the same fate as Vaith. There was only the three of them left, now, in this strange world that thought them already dead. They couldn't split up. All they had was each other.

They were free. They were free.

They had nowhere to go. They were free, and alone.

And from the veil, from the mass of white, solid white, it heard the students' thoughts, their pleas, their insecurities, and begin to shift once more. At first, it was a subtle change in the environment, the fog thinning, everything growing clear for a second.

For a second longer, the students could see clearly the extent of the damage of what was once Amityville, of Halloween, of what was their old home. Nothing remained in one piece, everything barren, lifeless, the bare skeleton, semblance of the world it had been.

Then for one last second, as they truly grasped the feeling of emptiness, of despair, it formed together, coiled together, this time not a creature but a figure the bare outlines of a figure, a familiar outline, a pair of strong hands beckoning them. It was-

Home.

They went home together.

Night looked over at Aurian before dropping his shoulders. She was the closest with Mai and with Aurian, it was hard for him but how much harder is it for her?

He gently tugged at Lacie before reaching over to Aurian and did what he did best. He smothered her in hugs.

He would protect them. He would do his best to keep Lacie and Aurian safe.

"We should-" The scenary changed though, the area lightened as they were shown Amityville, their home. Completely destroyed, a barren wasteland of emptiness and debris. And Night couldn't help the overwhelming loneliness, the sadness of not having his friends, his family.

"I just want to go home." He sighed tiredly. And like that, the scenery changed again and a figure held his hand out to them. Night took it willingly. He wasn't home after all, until he was with everyone.

"Home is where the heart is after all...." He flicked his ear before looking at Lacie and Aurian. "I was glad to have met you guys....so you know....Maybe we'll see each other again?" and with that, he faded into nothing.

Aurian was lost. She stared, unseeing, at the forest that loomed before them, the forest they'd nearly lost themselves in once already. It lay dark and forbidding behind tendrils of mist. To go that way again seemed futile. And it was impossible to take that first step forward when her heart was behind her, lying in the cave where she had left Mai and Vaith.

When red eyes turned to Lacie and Night, they remained glazed. She stared through them. Despite having spoken to them not a few minutes ago, Aurian no longer needed an answer. She'd found that for herself. No, there was no choice. She could never leave Mai and Vaith behind - not a second time. The fact that she'd done so once weighed her down; Aurian couldn't lift a foot if she tried. The tears that trickled down her face increased as arms wrapped around her. Aurian felt herself pulled in close to something, someone, but what should have been warm flesh instead just felt cold. Surrounded by Night and Lacie, Aurian could only feel alone. It wasn't enough. It wasn't right, they weren't the right people, their arms not the arms Aurian wanted around her.

And then even that pressure was gone, leaving Aurian to slump to the rocky ground. Completely alone now, she thought, though it didn't bring her mood down further. How could it? Aurian was sinking into a pool of despair, had been since the loss of her two greatest friends - losing Night and Lacie didn't make her sink any faster. It was all... inevitable, she supposed. If there was a bottom, eventually she would reach it, but Aurian doubted it. Maybe this was how others would view being smothered by shadows - the darkness that was overtaking Aurian had none of the comfort she normally associated with it.

"-Rian..."

Aurian sniffled and refused to look up from her knees. Whatever that faint noise was would surely go away.

"Aurian..."

Wiping a gloved hand under her nose, Aurian clenched her jaw. Her chin raised, her bottom lip protruding as she looked up. "What?" she asked, with an uncharacteristic bite to her voice. She trailed off, mouth dropping open.

Before her, the mist receded. The forest was gone, replaced instead with a broken wreck of a landscape. Aurian was halfway through thinking, 'What in Jack's name happened here?' when she recognised the crumbling remains of the Reaper dorm. And over there-! Yes, the correct distances away, the other buildings... The school! And beyond it, the ruins of what must have been the town.

"Aurian!"
"C'mon, let's all get out of here."

The voices pulled Aurian's attention away from the vision, which faded as quickly as it had appeared. Instead, Aurian's world narrowed to the silhouetted figure that had emerged. Figures, rather, as there were two of them, simply standing close together and holding hands while their unhindered arms waved her closer. Once Aurian would have pulled back, assumed that the clasped hands meant there was no room there for Aurian. Today, the thought didn't cross her mind. The pair of hands beckoned and Aurian didn't need even that much encouragement to join them. With a joyful shout, Aurian scrambled to her feet and ran forward.

"Mai! Vaith!"

Aurian drew closer and then launched herself at her friends. As her outstretched arms touched the shadowy figures, all three of them disappeared.

"Let's go home!" Aurian's tearful voice was heard, left behind as darkness took them.
