Auva could hear lots of noises.... disturbing noises... around her but she couldn't focus on them, they were all drowned out by her own heart beat. Making them seem so far away that she knew no one would help her, knew also that the stallion before her was thinking the same with his menacingly evil eyes. What could she do? She had Angeni blood, that was said to have an effect on Kalona's but she wasn't sure if that was true or just whispers to help them sleep at night.

Thump. Thump. THUMP. Went her heart, so strong and fast that she was sure there was a dint in her ribcage from the force of the beating.

Now that she had turned to look at the Kalona she seemed unable to process anything else.... she had been fleeing... right? She tried to get herself moving again, and actually managed to turn her head and take two steps.... but it wasn't good enough.

She yelped automatically, her head roaring with the same request over and over again.... 'Please don't... please don't'... yet she still didn't speak, she knew it was pointless, as if the beast would actually grow a heart and release her? Tears started to stream down her face..... how would she escape this? Her leg hurt, and she was sure she could feel some hot stuff running down it, part of her hoped it was saliva... but she doubted that very much. Oh but the pain.......

Auva wanted her Mummy and Daddy.

He'd lost Shri in the pandemonium that had erupted around the fleeing herd members. No one, except for maybe Revyra, seemed to have considered the potential for an ambush. That had been a mistake.

"Shrivatsa!!!" He hollered racing around in the middle of panicking soquili. It wasn't any good, she wasn't anywhere in sight. He scowled and snarled at his misfortune. Spirits be damned for all he had to endure. He felt someone hit his side and he snapped at them not knowing if it was friend or foe. It turned out to be friend and he turned to leave hastily. He really was a monster attacking 'friends' like that. As he was making his way out of the center to search the edges for his sister he noticed something that could only be considered suspicious.

There was a kalona talking to an angeni foal. Phala might know everyone in the foal but he knew there weren't any kalona lke that in Padmapani. There weren't any midget angeni either but he didn't imagine she was on the attacking side.

"Hey!" He barked charging at the kalona fangs bared. "Leave that runt alone!" It wasn't really his business what happened to this filly but he'd been training to kill a certain skinwalker. That skinwalker wasn't there but a kalona was the next best thing.

'Leave that runt alone' the words echoed in her mind.... was that how others saw her? Sure she was smaller than pretty much everyone, even her two sisters who were the same age as her... but did that make her a runt?

Tears were still flowing steady from her eyes from the pain in her leg where the Kalona had caught her.

She wanted it to end.... please Gods let it end.... but would this agressive looking stallion with a pelt that looked like a skinwalker actually be the one to help her? Or would he be the next to take a bite out of her?

Kakumei curled up, sobbing. His torn leg was bleeding freely and he didn't dare try to move it. He looked at it through bleary eyes but almost passed out from fright. He had never seen any sort of serious injury before and to his young eyes it felt and looked like he could die from his torn limb. "Vivace, Vivace!" he cried. "Help... I want Mom..." There was still so much movement and chaos all around. Shuddering and crying, Kakumei squeezed shut his eyes and hoped that it would all go away by the next time he opened them.

"Oh, boo," sighed Xelloss. He had a hold on the filly but was being interrupted before he could get to anything actually fun. If the stallion had given him a little more time then he could have taken her hostage, but that wasn't an option at this point.

The one charging him now was no one that Xelloss recognized from his last visit to the Padmapani herd. At first glance he almost looked like a skinwalker himself, but he lacked the hood and the insanity of one. He let go of the angeni but cracked his tail at her after, trying to smack her to the ground. He didn't want her escaping just yet in case he had time to play with her later.

"Are you sure attacking me is a good idea?" he asked the stallion, coyly. "I did just kill one of your herdmates, you know."

"Bodhi? Bodhi?" Auspicious Adagio frantically called her sister's name. She was removed from the battle enough that she didn't fear incoming attack, though she could still hear the shouts and cries behind her. She felt like she was trapped in a nightmare. There was no way that this could actually be happening. Just an hour before they had all been so happy, everyone together and whole. A tear ran down her cheek and fell to the dry ground beneath her hooves. That was when she caught sight of the fallen brown form.

"Bodhi!" She shouted and sprinted for her sister. She was hurt! The kalona must have broken one of her wings or something. She was-

Her sister's eyes were shut. The only movement in her body was where the breeze plucked at her broken feathers. Adagio shivered. She was surely just unconscious. She just needed the help of a unicorn and she'd be as good as new.

Adagio's eyes traveled to the unnatural bend in Bodhisattva's neck. "Bodhi," she whispered. "No no no no no no..."

Her ferret, Coda, slid to the ground from his place around her neck and stared.

Celestia had withdrawn from the injured foal and overprotective stallion. Surely there was something else that she could do even injured as she was. Indeed she was injured. Her paw refused to take much of her body weight as she slunk away from the sounds of battle. The time to rest seemed near. Using the shadows the she-wolf managed to escape the crush of bodies in the narrow valley before her ears twitched. There was a sound on the wind. It sounded like someone was in distress. A wolfish grin appeared as Celestia scented the breeze. There was indeed something ahead. Three scents assailed her. There was the scent of something recently dead and then of a smaller creature and another Soquili.

Celestia turned a corner and verified her sense of smell. A mare's broken body lay unmoving on the ground and another Soquili stood nearby. Celestia sighted the ferret near the mare's feet and sprung forward. Ferrets were relatively easy prey considering the larger size she had over it. If she couldn't catch it well maybe she'd snack on the dead mare. Food was food. A wolf couldn't choose to be picky.

Somehow his crazy idea had worked. He'd managed to land a couple blows and send the wolf limping away. He snorted after her but didn't make any move to pursue the creature. He had a scared, and now wounded, foal to look after. Turning back to the foal he did his best not to vomit at the sight of Kakumei's injured leg. He wasn't used to the sight of blood and it was pretty clear that it wasn't something he ever would get used to.

"T-tru." Vivace swallowed and shook his head before focusing his eyes firmly on Kakumei's face. Seeing the look in the foal's eyes didn't really improve the situation but at least he was able to string thoughts together. "Try to keep calm." He said almost as much to himself as to the colt. "We'll get you help." Somehow. How Vivace wasn't sure. He was no healer, Kakumei couldn't walk like that and he was hardly strong enough to carry the kid. All he could really do was keep his eyes peeled for someone who might be of some use.

It was painful to think about just how useless he really was.

Phala ceased his charge only after seeing the kalona release the filly deciding to think things through here. If he hit the kalona with the kid so close there was no guarantee that he wouldn't squash the kid in the process. The desire to not squish the foal was wiped out of his mind at the kalona's words. He'd killed one of his herdmates?

Phala's blood ran cold. Someone was dead. He hadn't seen Shrivatsa in ages. "Shri..." Phala whispered feeling a sudden wave of heat, of anger, rush over him. He bit his own lip hard enough to draw blood before looking daggers at the kalona. "Get lost midget." He said no longer caring what happened to the filly. If she ran, good for her, if not he would deal with it later. Right now the only thing on his mind was murdering that kalona that had killed his sister.

"I will have your heart!" Phala roared. His own blood dripped off his over-enlarged fangs as he lunged at the kalona with every intention of ripping out the smug bastards throat. No one messed with his brother or his sister. No one. Not in this world and not in the next.

Auva panicked as she felt the grip on her hoof released, she tried to move but the kalona's tail hit her and forced her to the ground. The air escaped her lungs and she panted trying to figure out what she was supposed to do. She supposed had she been one to speak now would have been an excellent time to plea or pray, but instead she remained silent; the only thing escaping her lips was a whimper.

Her eyes turned to the one who had summoned her release, she was thankful to them, and would have done her own version of 'thanks' had the situation been different... it wasn't as if she could stand and bow her head right now. Yet, just as the thought of thanking the brave stallion rung in her head everything changed again... and now she felt at the mercy of not one beast but two! New tears formed in her eyes... were these the whims of men? To change so suddenly and uncaring? Was it simply because she was a foal? Or a female? Or perhaps even both that had lead her to simply be uncared for and abandoned?

She buried her nose in her hooves, desperatly thinking of her mother and father. It was seeing their image that gave her the strength to try to stand.

Her first attempt was a disaster, she tried to lift with her injuried ankle and it cave beniethe her weight. The second attempt went better, that was until she put weight on her injuried ankle.... the pain shot through her little body so quickly that she couldn't have prevented what happened next....

...Auva wobbled in agony and fell to the side, collasping into the side of the Kalona that had wished to use her as a chew toy. Another small whimper escaped her....

The gaze of the wolves was unnerving, to say the least. Deva felt his resolve waver a bit as they challenged him with their barking and teeth barring. But he couldn't let them dissuade him from protecting his family, even if all he could do was act as a decoy.

Giving himself enough space to land between the wolves and the herd without dropping right into their maws, Deva landed. He kept his wings outstretched and lowered his head to the ground as a hoof pawed at the ground. There was no way this posture would chase them off, they were bold enough to attack an entire herd, one Soquili was nothing. But he could still hope, and in the least it put him into a defensive position. He would be ready to strike at them when the two wolves were finally upon him.

Though he was putting himself in great danger to keep these monsters away from the herd, he had absolutely no clue of its condition. He didn't know that they had already lost one, that two of the foals were fighting for their lives, that many others were simply missing. All he knew was they were in absolute chaos and it would be a miracle to just survive.

Xelloss found himself in a bit of a conundrum. He was quite enjoying the general panic, chaos, and mayhem, but things just got very serious very quickly. He had grossly misplayed his hand here. Instead of making the stallion despair at the death of a loved one, he was going berserk. Berserk soquili were dangerous even to one as skilled as he was. Once someone was broken past the point of caring about injury, they stopped behaving in a predictable manner. He wasn't happy about this development.

The idiot filly bumped against him right as the stallion charged. Didn't she have the sense to get out of the way of a fight? Xelloss hoped that at least she'd stagger in the way of his opponent and trip him up a little. He left her where she stood and did his best to dodge out of the way of the attack. He was as fast as lightning in the air but the advantage greatly decreased when he was landbound.

He didn't want to bring his body within reach of those gnashing fangs so he lashed with his tail instead. It wouldn't do major injury even if it hit, but he was feeling cautious with this enemy...

The two wolves held their ground and snarled viciously at Deva. Their fur bristled, making them appear twice their size. They exchanged looks and edged away from each other without a word. Slowly, they split apart and worked their way around Deva. With one on one side and the other on the opposite, they surrounded their prey. He was large prey for a pack of two but neither T'kashi nor Ninetails felt intimidated by that fact. They were both used to hunting and killing alone.

"Are you sure you don't want to keep flying?" asked Ninetails. She'd give him one last chance to save himself some pain, then they'd attack!

Kakumei pushed himself closer to Vivace so he leaned against the stallion's legs for protection. His injured leg was still bleeding, small clouds of heat rising from the cold ground where the splashes fell. The person he really wanted was his mother, but she was gone. She had left him all alone and he'd gotten hurt. He gave a small sob and hid his face in some of the fluff of Vivace's fetlocks. "We gotta get away," he whimpered. "Before the bad wolf comes back..." He had no way of knowing that the wolf was already stalking another of his relatives...

"Unicorn!" wailed Adagio, not noticing the wolf creeping up behind her. "Bodhi needs a unicorn! Please, someone help!" She could see for herself that her sister was beyond the help of a unicorn's healing touch but she wanted to believe anything but that truth. "Please...." Tears streamed from her eyes as she shut them. She couldn't stand to look at Bodhi's broken body anymore, but as if it was burned on her eyelids, she couldn't forget it. "Bodhi..." she cried.

"ADAGIO!" screamed her ferret, Coda.

Adagio opened her eyes again to see a wolf mere feet away. Coda was trapped in the wolf's jaws, screaming and biting to try to free himself before he was mauled to death. Horror gripped Adagio and she screamed too. Her piercing shriek echoed off the nearby mountains and rebounded across the entire pass. "Get off him! Get off him!!" She yelled and tried to batter the wolf with her wings, hoping it wasn't too late.
