It was ameliorating to get another hug - their group one had seemed so long ago, in a brighter and drier place. She clutched as Cliff's shirt for a moment to express her thanks, not trusting her mouth just yet; the last thing she wanted was to vomit on the poor guy.

And then she quickly let go when she heard Liam's warnings. Good thing too, otherwise she might not have caught the swift claw at her arm. A shriek stunned Zoey, and cold nails dug into the back of her arm i nan attempt to drag her into the deep darkness. She fought, screamed, and attempted a kick at the nigh-invisible creature - not now, she though, I'm not dying now! This seemed to fend it off, though now her right arm burned with pain as blood began to pump out.

Her other hand instinctually found her bandages to try and staunch and stop the bleeding, trying to keep moving to be less of a target as she surveyed her surroundings . . .

Another movement occurred out of the corner of her eye, and instinctively Zoey pulled away to the side, turning her body to avoid getting her arm re-mangled. And it was perhaps this that saved her life - and perhaps doomed someone else's.

She turned to yell about the incoming shadowing and instead was interrupted by, oddly, a color. A familiar color. Red was something she was used to by now: red, pink, wine, however specific you wanted to get about the shades. A Hunter would see all of them within several years on the job, and more gruesome ones to boot.

None more gruesome to her than in this instance. Seeing Isaac's grim look, Zoey thought for a moment it was him making the thing bleed - she had yet to see a FEAR thing do so, but her brain at the moment was not working correctly. For instance, it took her a few seconds longer than normal to recognize that Isaac's face was heading downward, that the splash of water was not his steps.

Seconds. Funny how long those could get. People were dying all around her, and all she could see was the blood bubbling out of her friend's mouth before he hit the ground, the blood splurging freely from his severed arm, the dimming of his weapon's usual glow.

No. No. NO!

Zoey frantically ran, stumbled even, to the dying man, her bandages still in hand. This - This was nothing, she could fix it, she had bandages, Cliff had bandages -

Bile rose at the back of her throat. She could taste it this time, all sour and making her shudder and spit off to the side before it could escape completely. Nononononono -

But she couldn't do it. She could bear to touch even one half of the Hunter to move him back together, the blood and smell and sounds and movements . . . she was nauseous, dizzy, light headed. Only trained instincts kept her going. It was hard to see, and Zoey noticed belatedly that she was crying. Fumbling to grasp his face, one cold hand found Isaac's cheek.

She wanted to conjure a smile, but she couldn't.

"Hon . . . I-Isaac, stay with me. Stay, dammit. <********> The strongest coursework, and her first time using it in a long time.

She remembered Isaac too had bandages and quickly snapped his pack open, grasping the bundle with trembling hands.

They were of no use now, but she had to do it anyway. Despair was hanging over her now, and the only thing keeping it at bay was the knowledge that others, however few, were still alive.

There was an eery sense of calm as Dom walked down the tunnel. Perhaps calm was not the right word, but the silence that was only punctuated by the sounds of water drops and the sloshing of feet on wet ground did little to unnerve the hunter. Or maybe he had already been resigned to what was coming and was taking the time to enjoy that moment of peace while he could.

Jared stayed silent by his side, the runes along the blade glowing a steady red. Even as the stench grew stronger and the water level kept rising, the hunter and his weapon remained quiet. Then everything came to a stop.

There was nothing else to say. Dom recognised the images of the hunters those pillars took. Hunters from the last mission, mostly recently deceased. He hoped that it was that. He did not want to see -

June and Derek.

His steps came to a grinding halt and the hunter stood on the spot, shaking and sending ripples throughout the water around him. His breathing became deeper, despite the stench. He wanted to deny it, pretend it was just an illusion, but it was them alright. Derek with a long, deep slash across his body and June with a hole blown right through her chest where her heart was.

Dom stumbled back, squeezing shut his eyes and making a detour around them. They wouldn't have her now would they? Not Emily, please not Emily. The Sun hunter forged onwards lamely, staggering through the water. It had been a while ago since he had so affected, but the forest of the dead had done nothing but to emphasize how alone he was.

The next pillar made his heart stop.

His denial was futile. It was her. Dom couldn't bring himself to carry on any further.

<....Hey>
....

The shaking wouldn't stop, and the hunter was on his knees, gasping. From down the tunnel the noises came, but even that could not move the man anymore. Dom looked up and took one last glimpse of the girl's face before he was engulfed by the attack. He did not move to defend, even as he was torn into shreds.

And then Dominic Cleverly was no more.

The dark little world Gabby had been in suddenly exploded into movement. And screams. And gun fire. And the clap of thunder as weapons runic and fear alike struck their target. She felt rather than saw Jamisson pull away to begin their attempt at getting out of this trap but still, she was vaguely aware of his large comforting presence. Gray eyes adjusted to the darkness as her arm snapped back and forth, cracking her whip at the fearsome creatures that had attacked them.

Crack. Crack. Crack. went her whip in quick succession, barely heard over the hail of bullets Jamisson was raining down. She never turned around to see how he was faring, she could just sense him near her. Amidst all the chaos and madness and death, she trusted him to stay safe.

She brought an arm up to her face, just in time as razor-sharp claws tore at her skin. Her vanity was preserved perhaps just a few moments more. She could always hide the scars if they were on her arms but not on her face. Gabriela felt pain lance through her wounded arm, nearly losing her grip on her whip. But she pushed through the white-hot agony as yet another set of claws tore at her back. She had to get out of this. Their mission was to disarm the artifact. They hadn't even found it yet! She couldn't allow herself to fail this mission. Any mission.

Jamisson would have her back, she knew he would. She trusted him and he had never let her down. Yet. And though she heard a splash of a body falling nearby, she blocked it out to focus on making it out alive.

That was when she heard him call her name. She didn't know how she could have heard it, his voice sounded so small, so unlike him. But she heard it. Turning, gray eyes widened to find him half-submerged in the muck. "No, no, no." She fumbled for her bandages, wading her way towards him when the glint of claws caught her eye. The next thing she knew, her face was streaked red and everything was growing darker.

Stubbornly, she pushed herself back to her feet, "You can't. You b*****d! D-don't you dare." She cracked her whip again, trying to ward away any approaching attacker, straining to listen to Jamisson's words. His last words.

Push it back, Gabby. Ignore the burning in your eyes. That's just the blood stinging. Your heart is hurting because it's working overtime to keep your blood moving, that's all it is. You will be upset, yes, later. Not now. You have a job to do. You have a mission to finish. Jamisson will not want you to be like those women in those movies you keep forcing him to watch. Don't cry. Don't cry. Not for him. Not here.

She swallowed with much difficulty with the taste of salt and iron and ash on her tongue. Again her whips cracked, lashing out blindly as she pushed and pushed and pushed away all her feelings.

Focus. Focus. Focus. He had your back. Don't waste it, you stupid, stupid girl. Remember him laughing at you, remember him taunting and mocking, remember how it made you stronger and helped you prove him wrong.

But she caught the tail-end of his words: A-lways... watch..you... and she stilled for the briefest of moments, her mouth opening to scream at him to stop talking. She never saw it coming even when it was right in front of her. The instance her lips parted, a spike lodged itself through the roof of her mouth, piercing up into her brain and out the crown of her skull. One spike. Then two. Then three.

Her body shuddered and convulsed as she was lifted up off the murky ground and was suspended in the air for what felt like eternity. The spikes retracted and she crumpled. Gabriela Sison was dead before she hit the muck.

Jess was completely unaware the entire attack that Dave was in any distress... that was until he fell by the wayside and his back was no longer firmly pressed against hers. She quickly turned around. Looking for him. Blood trickling freely down her shoulder from the one bite that came through enough to properly nail her as she sunk into the 'water'. Attempting to kneel beside him.

He didn't need to call for her. She was quickly upon him. Frantically going over his injuries. The gore, she was not unfamiliar. Her constitution normally rock solid but this... this was different. She had to turn her head as she made the tell-tale sound of someone gagging and struggling not to vomit. Eyes flinched tightly shut as fresh tears forced their way to the surface.

She swallowed hard before looking back at him. Trying to focus on his face this time. Blood and gore just reminding her... there was no fixing him. She knew there wasn't. He knew there wasn't. This was it. She buried her face in his shoulder.

"I love you too, Dave..." She uttered softly to him in reply. It was the first time she had ever used his real name. But he didn't seem to hear her. He was gone, it was too late.

She drew a slow painful breath and then shuddered on exhale. She wanted to stay here by his side and just... wait to join him. But. She couldn't. She knew that would only disappoint him. He died protecting her. It wasn't her place to just throw what he did for her away. Suddenly she reached for his jacket and began tearing at it. Ripping a huge strip out of it and making sure it kept the double scythe emblem marked upon it.

She stood up again. Thoroughly wringing the strip dry before slinging her gun to her uninjured shoulder and tightly wrapping the strip around her injured shoulder even though she still bled so profusely it saturated the strip, turning it dark red. It didn't need to stop the bleeding, that was beside the point. She just needed it to see her through, at least one more time.

She continued forward, stepping over dead in search of anyone who wasn't beyond help.

Screams. Gurgles. Swift as cheetahs, winged like bats, vicious like lions. Splashes. Sounds of chaos. Her head hurt, and momentarily Zoey wondered if there was any point in fighting anymore. Isaac was dead, who knew how Adam was doing, and there were enough bodies in the water now to make it hard to distinguish what was once murkiness and what was now tinged red.

In the midst of this, little Zoey Renolds' mind snapped into logic mode. Survival mode. Rebellious mode.

"Over here!" she shouted again and again over the screeching monsters, batting the things back as best she could with her fist, her hand torch, a foot even if she was steady enough. "Bandages here!" Damn did her arm hurt, but the bandages seemed to be staunching the bleeding.

She would not leave Isaac's side, nor Cliff's. To be alone now was absolute death. Together at least they could possibly make a chance. "Liam! Sir, get over here too!!" She looked for the Death Hunter's familiar blue glow in the chaos, tensed. They couldn't afford to lose another leader this night.

Tired. Aaron was just so tired. The excruciating pain in his side and in his shoulder seemed to dim as his vision flickered, eyelids fluttering as he struggled to keep his eyes open. Rina was saying something, but it sounded distant, muted by the fogginess that was filling his mind. Death? No, Aaron didn't want to die. All he wanted right now was to sleep. A nice nap, and then he'd be up and ready to take down these creatures.

However, just as he finally closed his eyes, a shout from nearby jolted him back into wakefulness. At once, the pain all came rushing back, and the young man gasped sharply, his hand instinctively moving to touch his side. All he could feel was a warm, wet substance, and maybe--

--No. For once, Aaron was too afraid to see of himself what kind of damage he had taken.

Slowly, he turned his head to look at the woman who had called out--Zoey. "K...keep it down...would you?" He managed, his voice weak. However, as much as he hated the pain, he was glad that her yelling had jolted him awake. It was obvious what would have happen if he had allowed himself to drift off.

The impact of hitting the ground stunned him. The body that had hit his was heavy, solid, and he hadn't been expecting it -- the air had been knocked out of him, and Cliff's eyes rolled a little as he tried to suck in a breath, failing for a good few minutes. When he finally did, he sucked in deep despite the sickening twang to the air, blinking to try to refocus his eyes. What... what was going on? The sound of screams was deafening, and he winced, shaking his head to try to clear it, one hand going to his forehead where a sharp rock had sliced it before he looked around. And what he was met with was carnage. The beating of massive wings and shrieks of something not human suddenly had a face, and green eyes widened in horror as razor sharp claws tore into flesh, coating the smooth stone walls in blood. A wave of terror struck him, paralyzing him as his mind whirled, trying to process what was going on, but it was a single thought that brought him back to motion, his body scrambling to turn around.

Isaac.

"Oh god... oh god no, no don't do this, please--"

The ground was slippery with blood and water, the southern boy tripping as he scrambled to close the short distance between himself and the other man. The site that greeted him was like out of a nightmare. Blood had already started pooling around the brunette's mangled form, his white hunter coat stained a dark black with it. Through the mass of shredded flesh, he couldn't tell where the wound started -- there was so much blood. So much blood... his arm was completely missing, just laying there on the ground a few feet away. Deep in the pit of his stomach, Cliff felt the urge to hurl, from the smell and from the gut-wrenching shock that had suddenly overtook him, and he started to shake as he stared down at the FEAR hunter, hyperventilating. In the final hour, the blonde couldn't think, couldn't process what was happening -- Isaac's lower half was practically missing, yet he scrambled to try to find something, anything, to try to tourniquet his wounds. In his peripheral vision, Cliff could see Zoey running towards them, but he couldn't process it, didn't barely notice as the girl bent down at Isaac's other side. He was still trying to find something to stop the bleeding, but there was nothing. Everything was soaked in blood. In a moment of hysteria, he finally pressed both palms hard against the wound on his stomach, as if trying to stifle the never ending flow of blood, eyes darting around wildly, desperately.

"SOMEBODY HELP, WE NEED HELP OVER HERE," he screamed. It was lost in the sounds of ripping flesh and screams of terror. Clasping a hand to his earpiece, he fumbled to find the right frequency, calling the only person he could think of. "EM, EM CAN YOU HEAR ME? WE'RE UNDER ATTACK, ADAM, EM... help..."

It was too late. Far too late. The sounds of screams filled the air -- even as he looked around, people were being torn apart, devoured, the rest running away screaming. From the headset, he heard nothing but static. No cocky words from Adam. No sweet reassurances from Em. The terror rose in his gut again, coaxing his breathing fast and hard, but it went completely still as he heard Isaac's gurgle, the sound catching his attention. Snapping his eyes down to stare at his friend, Cliff's breath hitched, his mouth falling open, hands shaking as he reached down to lift his friend a little. One hand wrapping around his shoulders, the other palm held the back of his head, cradling him gently as he pulled him close to his chest.

"Oh it's ok baby... shh... it's ok..." He couldn't even try not to cry now -- his voice shook as tears streaked down his cheeks. Tilting his head down, he pressed his lips against his forehead, murmuring to him softly through the chaos. "Close your eyes and think of home. My home, your home, don't matter..." Leaning down a little more, he pressed his lips gently against Isaac's, pressing their foreheads gently together. "I'm right here..."

There was nothing he could do. Nothing at all. Isaac had given his life for him, and there was nothing he could do but watch him die. Watch him die, and comfort him one last time. "Maybe I didn't love you...quite as often as I could have," he started, barely a whisper, his lips burying in Isaac's hair, "Maybe I didn't treat you... quite as good as I should have..." Cliff paused there for a moment, sucking in a slow, unsteady breath. He couldn't remember the words. He'd played it a thousand times on his harmonica, but now, right this second, he couldn't remember the goddamn words. "Tell me, tell me that your sweet love hasn't died. And give me... give me one more chance to keep you satisfied. I'll keep you satisfied." He was out of tune too. He sucked at singing -- only time people didn't give him weird looks for it was when he was in church. "Little things I should have said and done. I just never took the time..."

Even as Zoey called to the survivors, trying to bring them all together, he couldn't bring himself to look up. Squeezing Isaac gently, Cliff rocked back him back and forth, rubbing his thumb in comforting circles over the untouched skin of Isaac's good arm. He was covered in blood now, but he didn't care.

"But you were always on my mind."

Cliff's singing was what really opened the water faucets. Never mind that she couldn't place what the song was for some reason - music still could communicate far more than the spoken word could, Zoey believed. Even if in survival mode, she was human; she could cry.

And she did as she passed by Cliff, biting her lip as she grasped the man's shoulder and squeezed. "Be right back," she said quietly, quickly wiping at her eyes as she began to wade towards the voice of a young man who looked like he was in need of help.

It was hard not to look down, as use needed to to keep her footing. She caught the faces of the fallen, the pirate-eyed Irishman, the woman who had yelled at the FEAR hunters during the charging period, the older man who had been with her, the dual-sworded Sun hunter who had always kept to orders, the man she simple had heard of called Wolf, the young woman who had stayed by Caelius's side . . .

Six, seven with Isaac, dead in so short a time. It seemed there would be eight if she did not hurry. Eventually Zoey managed to find the fallen Sun hunter, pulling out her friend's bandages to get started. "Just sit up and stay still, okay?"

Tear stains were still evident on her face, but Aaron's wounds would be tended to the second he agreed to her orders.

While waiting for an answer for Remy chaos had ensued, things coming at them tearing into them and killing many. There was little time for Reuben to do anything when something tore into him targeting him out because he was a nice, large, seemingly slow moving object.

It found out how slow moving he really was when a large meaty fist bashed down on it and soon he was released and bleeding profusely as he sunk down to his knees gasping and staring down at the dark muck beneath him his eyes feeling suddenly heavy as he bleed out his life's blood.

"Darlin', ne'er you mind. I think....I think I need'a nap," he mumbled over to Remy as he struggled trying to stay awake anyways. He didn't want to die. Reuben had things he wanted to do, things he wanted to see - he wanted to continue to be a Hunter.

{Hang in there, buddy. Don't go down for the count!} Kon tried to be encouraging.

Reuben nodded his shaggy hair flopping over his face making it hard to read, "The ref ain't counted me out yet."

Yet was currently the key word.

There were screams, and shrieks, and cries, and Heidi swore she heard admissions of love being choked out. She couldn't see a damn thing except the glow of runes and weapons, especially that of Circe. What was this?! Was this a horseman? It couldn't be..could it? She could feel the blood trickling down her arm and she hoped to God it was still her own blood and not a comrade's. Where was Jared? Was he okay!? "JARED?" Heidi called out in a panic, eyes wide as she turned and looked all around in the near pitch darkness. If not for the glows she would think she was walking around with her eyes closed. Someone shouted about bandages and that was Heidi's choice on where to go. Bandages. She needed them before her arm bled out. "Coming!" She called out, trudging through the muck of..o-oh god..was that a leg? Heidi gagged and raised her uninjured arm to cover the lower part of her face as she hurried toward Zoey's call. "I..I'm coming!" She called out again, nearly tripping over bodies and corpses.

She was scared, but she refused to admit she was scared. Her headset was still reading nothing but static, she couldn't call Em or Julio or anyone outside of this damn place. She couldn't make sure her friends were okay. She needed to know they were okay if only to quell the growing feeling of dread in her gut that made her want to throw up it was so intense; Heidi had made them a promise and she intended to keep it. After this mission she'd relax more, she'd give herself more..Heidi time. She'd focus just enough to get her work done but give herself enough time to not completely kill herself with stress as she had been these last--no, these past few years.

Heidi Nowak refused to just give up.

Please be okay, guys. They were with the life division...essentially the medical team. They had to be okay. They had to be. Even if they weren't okay she would just delude herself into believing they were fine until the day she died. They would go home and relax. Everything was going to be okay.

"Who all is left?" Heidi coughed out, trying not to gag again. She didn't want to lose her composure, not right now. Now was probably the worst time to lose her focus.

"Just. Stay. Focused." Jamisson's voice rang through her head and she almost felt sick again. His had been one of the voices she'd heard die out...oh god. They couldn't fail here. They couldn't.

"Just stay focused, just stay focused. Stay focused. Don't let your mind wander. This is important. Just stay focused." Heidi whispered quietly to herself, chanting that three worded mantra over and over and over again. She had to live..for them. They were Hunters, they hunted, they killed for the good of mankind. Heidi refused to be the prey in their own hunt.

The darkness gave way to fluttering wings and the screaming wasn't just over the headsets.

Wickett moved like a snake, comfortable in the dark. If not the wet. He muffled the glow of his card deck with his hands and coat, keep moving, and there were bright flashes as the bladed edges struck, pinned to something leathery.

He stayed away from the illuminating glow.

The groans of the wounded and dying replaced the dirges from earlier.

"Stay quiet," he hissed.

Jared hardly had time to react to Heidi's reaction to holding Sloan, before they entered the forest of bodies. He refused to look. He absolutely would not look. They would distract him, he knew. He would see his mentor, more than likely. It wouldn't happen, it would not happen.

Suddenly, all Hell broke loose. There were wails, cries of anguish, calls for help. They were being attacked. Jared was immediately swinging, trying to find a mark in the darkness. At one point, he felt Sloan make contact with a beast soaring above his head, and Jared engaged at once. He hacked, slashed, and whirled, blocked, parried, and dodged. The beast dissipated, and Jared began to go on the defensive. They were still coming at him and his fellows. He could still hear the tormented cries of his fellow Suns, along with those of the Death division. Dejavou suddenly struck.

---

June 23, 1993

Jared Freeman was a fresh hunter, straight out of training. He had a dopey big grin, awesome acid washed jeans, and a runic hunting knife. His new Sun coat glimmered brightly in the desert sun, as he and his new squad were running to where there had been reports of a town terrorized by unnatural sandstorms. Their fearless leader, Hayden McGee, was at the forefront of their party, with his claymore know as Sloan strapped to his back.

The mission was supposed to be simple. The Death division had already gathered the intel that these sandstorms were just a bunch of desert pixies, preying on the town. A few good blasts from some runic grenades would do them in, and they could go home.

Death was wrong.

The pixies were actually just pawns in a bigger game. They served a group of intelligent sand Elementals, who served a particularly powerful desert Demon. The pixies were used as bait, and as soon as Sun Team XI had used up their grenades, the Elementals ambushed them.

---

His attention was turned back to reality as he head Heidi call out to him. Jared started forward, yelling. "Hei-!" His voice cut short, liquid began to seep from his mouth. His eyes turned downward, observing a massive scorpion-esque tail with crude and jagged spikes rammed through his chest. He'd be dead in seconds. His dying brain was addled, too many thoughts and emotions running with not enough time on the clock.

He looked up, not able to tell if Heidi was still alive. If she was, he had one last thing to tell her.

"H..Heidi! Thank... you. M-m-make sure Sl-s-sloan gets taken care of." He collapsed then, brain still cognitive for a few seconds. His lips formed a smile, as his final thoughts went through his head.

'I'm redeemed.'

Jess stumbled towards the cries for help. Having to shove various bodies or ... entrails... floating in the water out of her way to reach them. She was at the very tail end of what was once an impressive group, a fact which delayed her quite a bit. She still kept with her the stoic determination of making him proud. Making it so his efforts were not in vain. She just about marched through the water by the time she reached them.

"I'm not a healer." She confessed to Zoey.

"But I can make him sit up if I have to." She was referring to Aaron as she leaned in trying to get a better look at his injuries.

User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show. She didn't want to admit it but the wounds she suffered in the labyrinth was slowing her down. Her left arm felt heavy at her side and she had a limp to her step from where the spear had grazed the side of her right leg. She tried to convince herself that it was little more than a scratch but the burning sensation made it difficult. She hated lagging behind the rest of the group. Refusing to give up, she pushed herself to move faster, wincing as a pain shot through her leg. "******** all," she cursed through gritted teeth. Despite the pain, she only moved faster.

If a machete could sigh, Silverfang would have. He didn't like that Mira was pushing herself, though her stubborn nature was something he had admired. She never gave up, no matter how tough things got. He was about to say something when he heard an all too familiar hiss.

It happened so fast. The death division lead had barely warned them through their headsets. It was all she needed. With her good arm, she pulled out Silverfang and went into action. Her movements could be considered beautiful, even graceful. Her weapon felt light in her hand and during the next several minutes, she had forgotten every pain in her body; every negative thought. There was a glimmer to her eyes that hadn't been there a moment before and even a smile. One that did not fade even as they started getting near enough to touch her. She took a few scratches to her cheek and one over the bridge of her nose. She was in her element.

Eventually, the creatures slowed down enough that she could concentrate more on what was going on around her. Just in time to see a body crumple to the ground.

Dead.

It was Gabriela. She found herself slowly walked over to the body. This always happened. Her own selfish stubbornness and fear had kept her from getting to know this person. Really getting to know her. Now it was too late. Her eyes darted from one fallen comrade to another. So many emotions flooded her. Regret at not getting to know them them, shame at failing to protect them, then finally pride for knowing they had fought valiantly. She dropped to her knees and gently ran her fingers over the girls eyelids, closing them.

She had fought and died bravely. They all had.

She kept Silverfang in her good arm, so had to use the wounded one to pull out the necklace tucked into the collar of her jacket. It was small, simple, a delicate silver cross that might seem out of place on a girl with such a colorful vocabulary and harsh mannerisms.

"Dios mio, dame la serenidad necesaria para aceptar las cosas que no puedo cambiar. Coraje para cambiar las cosas que puedo y Astucia para saber la diferencia entre ellas." When the prayer was done, she stood up to join the others. She might have been too late to save Gabriela but she could still help others. She could feel her weapon agreeing with her.

((Forgive me if inaccurate, roughly translated: My God, give me my serenity necessary to accept the things that I cannot change. Courage to change the things that I can and cunning to know the difference between them.))
