One For Each Outstretched Hand XX: What the Spider Caught
"Pssst!"
The soft hiss was just barely audible through the constant quiet background rustles and rumbles of the menagerie, but it woke Nebula nevertheless - it was a very different sort of sound. The hairs on the back of her neck stood up, and she sat up quickly, pulling her tail close to her chest.
What is it? Phaedra said immediately, her tone wary.
I don't know... The Aoide slowly crawled to the nearest edge of the cage, peering through the bars. It was still nighttime, she realized.
Maybe she'd dreamed it...
"Pssst!"
I heard that too. You're not dreaming, Phaedra said with a low growl.
Nebula swallowed. "Who... hello?" she managed, calling out as quietly as she could. There was a muffled sound in response, maybe a suppressed curse? and then movement in the shadows, outside the cages. Nebula scrambled to her feet and backed away, as best she could.
There were two shapes in the dark shadow cast by one of the support pillars, near the chain that held her cage aloft... and then one of them stepped into the light.
Nebula's jaw dropped; simultaneously; Phaedra let out a hiss of delight, and a flicker of joy suffused the Aoide's mind. Yes, yes, oh, yes!
"Epi?!" Nebula dropped to her knees and stared down through the bars at the blue-haired olisikit. Next to her, the other figure stepped into the light.
"What am I, chopped liver?" Zoot muttered, then held one hand up to forestall Nebula's next words. "Quiet. We'll get you out of there."
Nebula nodded urgently, a warm feeling of joy that was entirely her own rising inside her. They'd come for her! Her friends, her own friends... they'd come!
Tell them - there's a lock high on the bar closest to the chain. Once they lower the cage, they can pick that. Phaedra's delight was wild, nearly manic. Ah, I will reward them well for such service...
There's a lock?! Since when?
I had a look around last night, Phaedra said, dismissively. But it doesn't matter now. How very, very convenient. Below, the clank of a chain rang out, and the goddess winced internally. They need to be quiet!!
"Sorry," came Epi's quiet voice from below. "We've got the chain loose. Hold on..." The cage swayed, and Nebula squawked and grabbed the nearest bars. Slowly they descended, Nebula hardly daring to breathe until the cage settled on the floor.
"Epi! Zoot!" Nebula reached one hand out through the bars, and Epi rushed to her and enfolded the Aoide's hand in her own. "You came! But how...?"
"Something was up. It doesn't take a genius to see that," Epi said, grimly; Zoot startled poking at the bars, a scowl on his face. "I was listening when Charlot got the news that you'd be staying. Usually they insist that the courtesan present the agreement in person, or at least talk over the phone... but he wouldn't let you. Said you were unavailable. And paid Charlot enough to not care..."
The lock, kitten! Phaedra was practically frantic; any moment one of the Mindless or Jatasura himself could find them, and then they'd be lost yet again.
"There's a lock! Here... where?" Nebula let go of Epi's hand, reached up where Phaedra indicated, then flinched in surprise when her hands touched a lock where her eyes saw only empty air. "It's invisible...?"
"Got it," Zoot said grimly, and clambered up the bars, a silvery lockpick at the ready.
"How did you get in, though?" Nebula turned back to Epi, who was looking out at the darkness of the menagerie, her ears up at full attention as she listened for any sign that they'd been discovered.
"This place is so huge... it's full of holes," Epi replied, but she looked away from Nebula for a moment.
"We'll tell you later," Zoot said. Then there was a click, and the olisikit slid down the bars. "Yes! Got it."
The cage trembled for a moment, then unfolded like a flower bud blooming all at once, and Nebula bounded free and into Epi's arms, tears bright on her cheeks.
"Oh, there there," Epi murmured into her ear. "We'll get him for this. That Master... for this and more."
"More?" Nebula managed, beaming through her tears.
"Come on," Zoot hissed, and Phaedra echoed his urgency. "Let's move."
Epi's face turned hard. "Yes. Come."
Phaedra laughed again in Nebula's mind. For once, the Aoide fully echoed the sentiment.

One For Each Outstretched Hand XXI: Underneath
To Nebula's surprise, Zoot and Epi led her to a shadowy corner of the menagerie, a tiny space mostly hidden behind one of the cages. There, set into the floor, barely visible, was a single round flagstone that differed from the rest of the paving. Zoot knelt and tapped at the edges, and a handle slid up into his grasp. A quick tug, and the flagstone slid up, revealing a dark tunnel below.
"Quickly," Epi said urgently. "This tunnel has been well-used, and recently. If we run into one of them..."
Nebula bit her lip. She didn't need to be told. There was a ladder heading down into the darkness of the tunnel, and she followed Epi's lead, climbing down as quickly as she could. Above them, Zoot slipped into the tunnel as well, then pulled the flagstone closed. Fortunately, there was some dim light radiating up from below.
"Don't stop," Epi warned as Nebula reached the bottom of the ladder. "This way!" The olisikit darted down the tunnel, past several odd glowing stones set in the wall for light. "This place is so massive, there are bits of it that don't seem to have been used for ages. We'll hide there for now..."
So I'm not the only one who plots and plans, Phaedra chortled, her nervousness beginning to fade away in the face of Epi's confidence and apparent knowledge. Another very good little kitten.
Nebula didn't respond - not now. No matter how Phaedra felt, her own heart was pounding. She couldn't go back in the cage, couldn't, just couldn't...! Every shift in the light, every distant sound, made her flinch as though someone had struck her. She followed Epi like a guiding star, and was grateful for Zoot's guarding presence behind her.
Luck was with them, it seemed. They saw no one else as they moved through the pale round tunnels. Nebula tried to keep track of where they had been, but quickly got lost; however, Epi seemed to know where she was going, even though all the tunnels looked the same.
Finally, the tunnel they were following dead-ended into another ladder, and Zoot moved past them to take the lead. He scurried up the ladder and slowly pushed the flagstone above up, just enough so that he could see whatever was above them. After a long moment, he nodded and lifted the flagstone the rest of the way. "Come on. It's safe." Nebula clambered up after him into what seemed to be a storeroom for furniture. The entire room was dusty.
Typical. He's overbuilt, over-reached himself, Phaedra said with a snort. There's already decay here.
Nebula sank down on a nearby chair with a sign of immeasurable relief. "Epi, Zoot... thank you so much..."
No time for that, Phaedra said, sharply. This place seems safe for now, but Jatasura is very good at seeming. I want to know how they got in. Now.
Can't I have a moment?!
No! Jatasura may be counting on that mortal weakness! The goddess was growing agitated again. Unless you want to go back in that cage, or worse...
No! Nebula twitched, then shook her head. "I... I have to know how you got in here," she said, looking at Epi and Zoot. The two olisikits had settled themselves on a nearby couch, after Zoot had pulled a large dresser over one side of the tunnel flagstone, to keep it closed. Just in case. "Please. We might not really be safe..."
Zoot's tail twitched. "It's a long story... maybe too long. If you're worried, maybe we should keep going. Get out, and-"
"No," Epi interrupted, just as Phaedra snapped No! inside Nebula's mind. Nebula gave Epi a surprised look, and the blue-haired olisikit shook her head. "No. Sorry, Zoot... Nebula... but I'm finally here. Finally got the nerve. If I leave now, I'll never come back. I'll never know."
Zoot made a vague motion towards Epi, but she turned away from him.
Oh? Do tell, Phaedra murmured, her curiosity piqued. What is it that you hunger for, little one?
"Argh... fine, fine." Zoot folded his arms over his chest; next to him, Epi straightened again, though she still didn't scoot over to sit as close to him as she'd been before. "Explanation time."
"For all of us," Epi added, glancing at Nebula.

One For Each Outstretched Hand XXII: Questions and Answers
Nebula bit her lip at Epi's odd look, but the olisikit sighed again and shifted position, pulling her knees up so that she could hug them to her chest. "I haven't told anyone this. Ever." Her words were halting; Zoot looked as though he wanted to embrace her, but he did not move. "We are in a network of tunnels that spreads under much of Achai's Ruby, though not beyond. The Mindless use it. They live in it. As far as I know from eavesdropping on the overseers, it's called the Labyrinth."
Copycat, Phaedra huffed.
Epi took a deep breath. "I came to the Ruby two years ago, roughly... with my sister, Polyhymnia. Hymn for short, of course... our parents were a little odd. Classics nuts," she added, with a small, flickering smile. "She was younger. 17. Not old enough for... the trade, you know. But I had experience. We landed in a different brothel in the outskirts called the Seven Songs or something like that. Hymn thought the name was a good omen." Her smile turned fond, then faded away entirely.
"She took a job in the kitchens. We met the Mindless then. Apparently they were the reason for the city's prosperity, though we didn't understand what that meant. Hymn was one of a very few kitchen workers that weren't Mindless. I worked upstairs... you know. My work hours were different, and longer, than hers, so she spent a lot of time running around. Trying to talk to the Mindless. She felt sorry for them."
"Is that why-" Zoot began, but Epi held up one hand, sharply.
"Let me finish, or I might not- yes. Well. Hymn. Yes." Epi closed her eyes for a moment. "One day, a month or two after we'd come, she came to my room after 'work' with a tremendous tale, her eyes bright... she'd found tunnels. One of the Mindless had showed her, she said. I'm still not sure if that was true - Hymn was forever interpreting the most empty movements of the Mindless as rational responses to her attempts - but she said she'd gone down it and seen strange things. Amazing things. A great room full of conveyors, with dozens of Mindless running on it... massive storehouses... a massive maze, all beneath our feet. I didn't believe her, of course."
She slumped, just for a moment. "She pouted at me. The next night... she didn't come, and I was worried. Then she showed up around noon and dragged me down to the kitchens, into a storeroom, and showed me a flagstone just like the ones we passed through on our way to this room tonight. When she opened it, there was a ladder going down. I refused to climb down. I forbade her to go any further." Epi shook her head. "I should have known better. Saying 'no' to her was like waving a red flag in front of a bull..."
"She didn't come for a few days after that, but I was so busy I barely noticed until she returned, coming to my room one night and waking me up with a bundle of fragrant flowers. I'd never seen anything like them before. 'They're from the garden of the Palace,' she said. 'I followed the tunnels all the way there... there's more. Much more. It goes everywhere!'"
Epi stopped, and hugged her knees tighter to her chest. "I called her a liar," she said, finally, her voice breaking. "I told her to stop telling me stupid stories... I was tired, I was..."
"Epi," Zoot said, quietly.
"I was... stupid. We fought that night. Hymn left telling me that she'd come back with more proof... she... she didn't."
"Didn't bring proof?" Nebula asked, confused.
"No. Didn't come back," Epi replied, ducking her head. "Didn't ever come back. But... I know what happened to her." The olisikit looked up, then, and her eyes were hard behind the tears. "After a week, I had to accept that she really was missing, not just hiding somewhere - no one had seen her since she left my room that night. The matron of the brothel put out the word, quietly, to let me know if she was seen... or... found... anywhere. It was quiet for six months. Six months. And then..."
She shuddered, her tail puffed up like a bottlebrush. "The matron invited me into her office one day. Said they might have found something. We went over to a restaurant even further on the outskirts... and there she was." Her voice dropped to a near whisper; Zoot and Nebula had to lean in to hear her. "She was in the kitchen, all her fur gone, her expression blank. I hugged her and shook her and... there was nothing. Nothing." Epi's voice broke again. "She had been... was..." She shook her head, violently.
"Mindless," Nebula whispered, and shivered herself.
"That," Epi agreed, rocking back and forth slightly. "Nothing I did mattered. Nothing I did changed... changed anything. I brought her back, bought her from the place that had... bought her themselves, from the Master of this Palace. I cared for her, reminded her to eat, to drink, to piss and s**t... to sleep... until she withered away and died unseeing one night while I was at work. Four months after I found her, she was dead."
"Epi... I'm so sorry," Zoot breathed, his longing to reach out and comfort her nearly palpable, but he continued to restrain himself. "I'm so sorry..."
"It's not your fault," Epi said, and her eyes grew hard again. "It's his. The Master. Oh, I had hoped it was a mistake, an error, grasping for any kind of explanation besides the obvious. How could I dare to set myself against the highest power in Achai? So I worked. I worked very, very hard. I switched clubs to Nirvana Six to climb the ladder there, dreaming of the day I would be invited to the Palace, when I could really investigate. I couldn't... couldn't go down the tunnels like she had. I tried, once, but I froze on the ladder, then ran back to my room and cried for hours about my cowardice. I tried to forget until... until you went. And you vanished too. I couldn't let it happen again. So I came... but I'm sorry, Jewel, it wasn't only for you. It's for Hymn too. And for myself. And for... him."
Ah, so that is your hunger. Vengeance, Phaedra purred.
Vengeance? More like justice! Nebula snapped back at the goddess, bristling a little. The tale Epi had told chilled her to the bone, and turned her fear of Jatasura into anger much like Phaedra's own.
Justice is merely vengeance with a veneer of 'morality', the goddess said dismissively. But it will serve. Our purposes are aligned. Her thoughts grew focused and intense again, crowding Nebula's own. We can work together.
"Is there anything more, Epi?" Zoot prompted, gently.
"No... not other than what I showed you. I brought Zoot with me because I was afraid," Epi admitted, finally glancing over at the other olisikit, who actually blushed a little. "And he came... I'm not sure why, but I'm grateful," she added, with a small, swift smile that made Zoot's blush deepen. "We came down the tunnels and saw many things, just as Hymn said."
"This entire city is powered by the Mindless," Zoot said, soberly. "There are rooms upon rooms full of treadmills on which hundreds upon hundreds of Mindless are forced to run. They generate electricity, water pressure, everything... I'd always wondered how Achai managed to retain such things when they're so scarce everywhere else. Now I know." Zoot pounded one fist into the couch he sat on. "And I can't stand for it. Maybe I'll kill a b*****d if he earns it or offends my gang, maybe I'll rob this, that or the other, but... there's a line, you know?" He gave Nebula a flustered look.
She nodded. "I know. I agree."
"So that's my story," Epi said, the wan smile appearing on her face again. "Now it's your turn, Jewel."
"My turn?"
"Yes." Epi looked straight into Nebula's eyes. "Who mutters quietly while you sleep? Who sings for you?"
Nebula froze, feeling as though the bottom had just dropped out of the world - but Phaedra was there, lightly shoving her to the side as she took control. I will handle this - we cannot jeopardize this uneasy alliance with stumbling explanations. "So you noticed... you are indeed canny, Epithymia."
Epi stilled, and one of her hands crept over to grab at Zoot's. "Who are you?"
"My name is Phaedra. I am... ancient, and share the form of this child. The Master whom you hate so dearly is also my enemy. Our purpose matched yours; we too climbed to this height to enter this place and take vengeance, but we found ourselves anticipated by the Master."
But that's not what happened, Nebula protested.
Hush - we must capture their confidence. Details are unimportant right now. All that matters is that our mission is the same. I need their knowledge. You need their companionship. You know this.
... Okay, Nebula said, after a moment's uneasy silence.
"Why didn't you tell me before?" Epi asked.
Phaedra laughed, though not unkindly. "Who would have believed her? It was simpler this way. Besides, we were attempting to be incognito. But I know this Master. He is no human, as he has appeared to all of Achai - he is an ageless and ancient being, a rakshasa, a creature of magic and illusion. The power he uses to create the Mindless is a perverted relic of my own forging; he has twisted it to his purpose and uses it for ill."
For a moment, Nebula was awed. Phaedra hadn't actually lied at all in that part, yet her turns of phrase painted a far more saintly picture of her than was true. The goddess radiated smugness at her host.
"Something of yours?" Zoot shook his head. "Well, no wonder you want vengeance, if he's doing this s**t with your treasure. Can you get it back?"
"Given the chance, yes... and I will bring him and this city down. No more Mindless. No more living on the backs of those made broken by twisted power." Anger blazed in Phaedra's voice, and Nebula felt her own hackles rise in response to the goddess' barely controlled rage.
"Our purposes are the same, then," Epi said, then nodded. "Very well. Thank you for telling me the truth."
"We must work together as one to succeed. Make no mistake, Jatasura is a powerful enemy. You saw how he caged us. We may not be truly safe here... but there is no point in worrying with no evidence, in running about in a panic. We must plan based on our best knowledge, then act!"
Zoot seemed impressed. "We will certainly do our best."
Epi stood up. "Thank you... Phaedra, was it?" Nebula nodded, and the goddess withdrew with a soft mental caress and purr. "Well, then. It seems we have plans to make."

One For Each Outstretched Hand XXIII: Scratches in the DarknessThey planned, and they moved. There was no way that Jatasura would not know of Nebula and Phaedra's escape, but to their wary surprise, no alarm that they could detect was raised. Still, Jatasura knew - and that alone was enough to make everything dangerous. The next few days saw plans formed, discarded, re-considered, and molded into new shapes. They ventured out into Jatasura's 'Labyrinth' frequently, trying to map it as best they could. Several times they nearly were caught by Mindless, saved only by speed and shadow. Once, Nebula clung desperately to a ladder as a line of a dozen Mindless walked below her in perfect time, afraid even to breathe lest one of them glance up and see her, pressed against the ceiling with a desperate hold on the metal rungs. And yet... and yet they remained, ostensibly, free. Nobody seemed to see them, there seemed to be nothing suspicious - though, as Phaedra pointed out, that alone might well be cause for suspicion. Jatasura was good at seeming. Perhaps they were all already trapped, and all their movement had been running through a maze of the rakshasa's making - but even if that were true, it was better to run than to be huddled in a corner waiting for capture. The network of tunnels under the Palace was indeed incredibly vast, and perilously easy to get lost in; Phaedra's excellent sense of direction got Nebula out of trouble several times. They'd lost track of time early on; it was impossible to keep count of the hours in the endless sameness of the tunnels. In their explorations, they found several massive underground storerooms, and two huge generator rooms filled with treadmills. The treadmill rooms were redolent with humid air, thick with the odor of sweat as hundreds of Mindless ran glassy-eyed along until they fell - either with simple exhaustion, or death. The very sight made Epi tremble with rage; once, Zoot had to physically restrain her from leaping out at an overseer and attacking him. But, while interesting and horrifying all at once, none of it was what they were looking for. We must find the scarab. Otherwise we will sneak and scuttle in the darkness forever, to no purpose. With the scarab, I can bring Jatasura down.
Only with the scarab....... After what felt like several days from Nebula's rescue, at long last, Phaedra woke them up as they slept in the windowless storeroom that had become a sort of home. "Awake - there is sound, below."The goddess' calm proclamation brought the three felinoids into sudden sharp wakefulness - were they found at last? doomed at last? Zoot swore under his breath and scrambled over to the flagstone that led down to the tunnels, while Epi fumbled for Zoot's handgun. Nebula swallowed hard as she joined the two olisikits near the tunnel entrance, listening. Sure enough, there was the sound of footfalls below them, but it lacked the perfect rhythm that marked the movements of the Mindless. "What on earth..." Zoot muttered, then nodded. "I'm going to look. Just a crack. Agreed?" "Agreed," Epi said, grimly, and Nebula nodded her own assent, and Phaedra's as well. Quietly, Zoot moved the dresser off of the flagstone, then crouched. Epi got up and extinguished the lights. In the darkness, Nebula heard the soft rustle of Zoot's clothes as the olisikit lifted the flagstone, letting in a tiny sliver of light from the tunnel below. They dared not open it more than a crack. Epi and Nebula scooted over to hold the flagstone up so Zoot could put his eyes directly up to the crack and see as much as possible. They stood there in the darkness, Epi and Nebula listening, the flagstone heavy in their hands. Below, sound floated up to them from the tunnels, the noise sharp and startling after so many days spent only with each other's quiet company and the perfectly matched movements of the Mindless. These footsteps were definitely mismatched, definitely not Mindless... but there were voices, too. Cries. Curses. Pleas for mercy... Zoot sat up, and the soft downward pressure on the flagstone indicated that he wanted them to lower it into place again. Silently, Epi and Nebula did so. Immediately, all light vanished and the sounds below became muffled. They sat there, listening as the commotion moved along, leaving them behind, dimming, fading away. Gone. Nothing except for their breathing, for another moment; then, movement as Epi got up and fumbled for the lamp. They blinked against the sudden glare of light, then let out one long breath of relief, simultaneously. "We're safe," Epi said, shaking her head. "Never mind that," Phaedra put in, her tone impatient. "What did you see, Zoot?""I saw..." Zoot's fists clenched at his sides. "I saw men, women and children being herded by the Mindless. The captives were wearing rags, rotten clothing... they were dirty and foul. And begging for mercy. There was an overseer." Nebula's eyes narrowed, unbidden, as Phaedra took in this information. "I see. We... yes, this is what we have been waiting for, I think. We must follow them."Epi stared. "Are you crazy?! Do you want to get captured?" "Hardly," Phaedra said, sharply. "Think - rational beings, dirty and obviously unkempt, being herded through the tunnels only the Mindless use, under control of an overseer. Where do you think they're going? Why do you think they're here?"Nebula caught a shred of the goddess' thought, and she shuddered. "He... they're taking them. For... fodder. To make more Mindless..." Epi twitched convulsively, then scrambled for the flagstone. "We have to save them!" "No!" Phaedra barked, and Zoot jumped up to grab Epi's wrists before she could raise the flagstone. She fought him for a moment, then slumped. "We have to follow them, and carefully. We must not risk ourself for foolish attempts at heroism- no, listen to me," the goddess added, as Epi's hands clenched into fists and anger rose in her face. "Do you want to loose them into these tunnels, lost and empty, and sacrifice our own lives... let Jatasura keep going? Do you think they'll be able to get out if we release them in this place with Jatasura still in power? No. Perhaps we can save them. But they are going to where my scarab is, because that power is what will make them Mindless, and it cannot be used from a distance. The relic will be there. And once we know where it is... I can take it, and there will be no more Mindless." Phaedra's tone was grim, serious. "Do you understand?"Epi drooped further, and Zoot gingerly released her. "I do." "Good. Gather your weapons - we go. Now."

One For Each Outstretched Hand XXIV: What Must Not Be Seen
The captives were easy to track - they moved s lowly and noisily, in complete contrast to the Mindless. The three felinoids followed the group at a distance, keeping corners between themselves and the group ahead, winding their way through the tunnels. The path was intricate and went far further than they had ever dared to go. Are you sure we can get back 'home'? Nebula asked Phaedra, after the Aoide finally lost track of their path.
Perfectly, Phaedra snapped. My own Labyrinth was ten times more complex than this useless tangle. Hush! In front of them, Zoot had come to a stop at a bend in the tunnel, and was gesturing for them to catch up. Epi and Nebula quickly scurried up and ducked down behind the olisikit.
"What?" Epi whispered.
"They've stopped. Wait..." A creaking sound came from the tunnel ahead, beyond the 'corner'. "A door?"
"They must have reached their destination," Epi replied, grimly. The noise rose for a moment, the sound of voices blurred together, but decidedly more frantic. Zoot's tail twitched back and forth once, sharply.
We must move - we must not let the doorway close and shut us out, Phaedra said, urgently.
Nebula inched forward. "We need to move, Phaedra says... we have to look at the door..." She carefully crept past Zoot and leaned to peer around the corner with utmost caution.
The round pale tunnel ended abruptly, thirty feet beyond the bend, in a set of double doors much like those that marked the underground storerooms and treadmill halls. Sure enough, the captive group was milling in panic outside of the open doors, crying out as the Mindless around them pushed them inexorably in through the doorway. A child slipped free for a moment, then fell as an overseer's whip lashed out and caught them around the ankle. One of the Mindless retrieved the little one, showing no reaction to the flailing fists and desperate screams. Epi made a soft sound under her breath, and moved forward slightly.
"No, Epi," Zoot said, through gritted teeth. "I know. But Phaedra was right. We wouldn't be doing anyone any good if we blow it now... they'll just be recaptured or die down ******** you both. ******** you both for being right," Epi swore, and Nebula heard her slump to the floor momentarily.
Pay attention! Nebula blinked rapidly as the goddess forced her focus back to the group by the doors. All the captives were nearly inside by now, and as she watched the last one was herded in. The Mindless filed in afterwards, one overseer bringing up the end - yet the doors, amazingly, did not close.
They waited for a moment, hearts pounding, expecting any moment to hear the doors swing closed, or for someone to come out... but nothing happened. Finally, Zoot inched forward. "Come on. Let's go."
Quietly, they crept down the tunnel. Still nothing interrupted them, and after a quick check to make sure they'd be safe, the three scurried into the room. There were crates in a corner, providing excellent shelter for the would-be spies.
Thus safely concealed, they looked.
The room they were in was half the size of the treadmill halls. The crates they were hiding behind were set on a sort of balcony that ran all the way around the edges of the room, and stairs led down to the sunken floor below. Odd lumpy piles, like impossibly strange haystacks covered in tarp, were mounded to one side of the sunken floor, and the captives that had been herded down there were keeping well away from them.
There, Phaedra hissed, suddenly, dragging Nebula's attention away from the milling captives and up to the 'balcony' on the other side, opposite where they hid. Here the balustrade was more elaborate, and an elegant golden cage hung from a bright pillar. Within it buzzed a hint of brightness.
Mine, the goddess snarled, and Nebula wobbled under the sudden flood of Phaedra's need and desire. There. Mine.
Stop, Nebula managed as Zoot reached out to steady her. Then they all jumped together as a loud, gong-like crash rang out through the room. The captives below huddled into a single terrified mass.
One of the shadows on the opposite dais lengthened, then split; Jatasura's long, thin form stepped out of it, his smile bright in that black face, his long fingers spreading in perverted benediction over those held below. "Good evening, my dear ones." There was no response from the captives. Jatasura smirked. "Don't be afraid. You're about to become a linchpin of Achai's economy." One of the captives yelled something, but Jatasura's smile only became wider. "Hush, hush, silly little creature." He flicked one long finger, and a swirl of magic descended. There was a single strangled cry from the group, and then nothing but silence. Nebula could dimly see their mouths struggling to open; one or two of them clawed their cheeks bloody in an instant, trying to force their jaws to move.
"b*****d," Epi hissed.
"Now. You, there, surround them... yes." The Mindless moved immediately to form a living cage around the captives. Jatasura himself walked over to the delicate golden cage and reached inside. The scarab within banged around against the bars, making a strangely beautiful hiss and ping as its wings touched metal, but all its flailing was as futile as that of the captives below. The rakshasa captured the scarab in one long-fingered hand, closing his fingers around the golden bug, trapping it in another sort of cage. "Pretty little thing. I brought you more food. Meld with my power and will and create for me." He withdrew hand and scarab from the cage and moved at sudden speed, leaping over the balustrade in front of him and landing crouched in front of the captives, who tried to back away, but could not. "Hello there. First one, please."
One of the overseers herded a man forward; he stumbled, and Nebula could see his jaw working futilely. Behind her, she felt Epi turn away, unable to watch, but Phaedra held her host frozen as the goddess stared with intense loathing at the rakshasa and her scarab. Such blasphemy, such clumsy magic... he knows nothing about what he seeks to command. Nothing.
Below, Jatasura made another finger-flick with his free hand, and the man's arm suddenly was lifted up, offered to the rakshasa despite the man's horrified expression. It was clear he hadn't made that movement himself. With a charming smile, Jatasura brought the hand with the scarab down on the man's inner arm, then opened the fingers just enough to allow the golden bug to step onto the soft flesh there.
"Enjoy," the rakshasa crooned.
Then there was a surge of power, and Nebula stiffened as Phaedra let out a mental snarl intertwined with pure hatred. Below them, the man stiffened as well, then fell backwards, a red weal clearly visible on his arm where the scarab had bitten him. He stumbled to the ground, then suddenly looked upwards, his gaze locked on Jatasura's obscenely smiling face. With a soft hiss, the man's hair began to fall out, sliding down his skin and clothing to pool at his feet, even as the light in his eyes dimmed to nothing but blankness.
"No, no, no," Epi cried, quietly, then her voice muffled completely as Zoot put one hand over her mouth.
How dare he. Nebula's entire body was shaking with the force of Phaedra's rage. Below them, captive after captive was being dragged forward, bitten, then stumbling backwards as their wits left them and their hair fell to the ground. Other Mindless swept the hair up, building up another pile much like the others mounded to the side of the sunken floor.
But now I know where you keep your treasure. Now I know, Jatasura.
I will have my vengeance.

One For Each Outstretched Hand XXV: Preparations
Somehow, they had managed to escape without losing their lives or their sanity - that last had been the most perilous, after watching captive after captive fall to Jatasura's power and the bite of the scarab. They had fled nearly heedless of capture as soon as possible, and only fortune kept them from running headlong into Mindless in the tunnels. Once back in their sanctuary, Epi had promptly been sick.
All Nebula wanted to do was throw herself over one of the beds and think about absolutely nothing for a while, try and erase the soft slither of hair falling out and the glassy stares from her memory, but Phaedra would not let her rest, not even for a moment. We must move. Tonight. As soon as we can, the goddess snarled, flooding her host's body with adrenaline.
I can't! We can't! Nebula wailed mentally, jerking her head to indicate Epi's limp form resting on a nearby bed. The olisikit was curled into the fetal position, and Zoot hovered over her, stroking at her hair with an look of desperation in his eyes. Look at them! Look at me! What can we do?!
... Fine, the goddess conceded, with extreme reluctance. The adrenaline bled away so quickly that Nebula wobbled and fell - not ungratefully - onto the bed she was standing near. Perhaps haste might make waste, in this instance... indeed. Impetuous, too impetuous... where did that quality come from? It's useless. Dangerous.
I'm tired.
We need to move tomorrow, as soon as we can. Did you see what they were doing when we left that place?
Nebula's tail twitched back and forth sharply. No. Then, ow! as the goddess delivered a mental smack to her host.
Pay attention! Don't let such things numb your mind, Phaedra lectured. After Jatasura left, there were two Mindless guards left to guard the scarab... doubtless with orders to raise the alarm, should anyone enter. But, more importantly, there were other Mindless that brought them food and drink...
So? Nebula thought back, muzzily, then flinched again as Phaedra smacked her once more.
So there is food and drink there. What did Epi give you before we left the brothel?
Nebula sat up and put one hand on her chest, feeling the cool weight of the pendant pressing against her skin. "Poison..."
"Hm?" Zoot said, glancing up at her.
"Poison. Epi gave me some poison before I left the club."
Epi slowly uncurled and sat up as well. "That's right... that narcotic." The olisikit's eyes narrowed.
"It's so much more subtle and quiet than Zoot's handgun, don't you agree?" Phaedra purred, her voice silken. "And if we can get it into the guards' drinks..."
"Yes." Epi smiled, and her expression reminded Nebula powerfully of Phaedra at her most predatory. "Oh, yes. I like how you think, Phaedra."
"Thank you," the goddess replied, smugly. Then she turned serious once more. "Rest as best you can tonight. We will take their morning meal; Achai is at its peak in the nighttime hours, so Jatasura must be most active then as well. We will move then, when he is most likely to be asleep."
Zoot nodded, slowly. "Very well. We will be ready."
"Excellent. Now... sleep."
Nebula was unprepared for the sudden flood of exhaustion that burst through her mind; she tottered and fell back down onto the bed, curling up as Epi had. One finger lightly touched the gem in her eye socket before Phaedra's forced oblivion took her away. The last thing she was aware of before sleep claimed her was the goddess laughing.
Tomorrow. Enjoy this night, Jatasura. You will have no others.

One For Each Outstretched Hand XXVI: Offering and BenedictionFrom the moment Phaedra woke them all early the next morning, the world became a blur for her host. The goddess' thoughts and orders were so fast and furious, so active, that Nebula had a hard time concentrating on her own train of thought. It was like waking from a dream every moment, an odd, halting existence under the flow of Phaedra's mind. Finally, Phaedra woke her host from that daze with a sharp mental shake. Are you paying attention?!The Aoide blinked. What? It's hard to hear myself think... with you thinking so loud...There was an exasperated sigh from the goddess. We have gathered our resources and are ready to move, kitten. Do you have the poison?Nebula fished the vial pendant out from under her clothing, then held it up to her ear and shook it gently. Sure enough, liquid sloshed around inside. Yes."So our resources are... Jewel's poison, Zoot's handgun, and our own wits." A grim smile tugged at Nebula's lips. "And myself. Believe me, we have the advantage... now. We must get the poison into the guards' drink. There is a ladder not too far from where they pass by - if Zoot creates a distraction... do you remember what we discussed last night?"Nebula glanced over at Zoot, startled. "Last night? When?!" "I think you were asleep," the olisikit said quietly, then shifted to address Phaedra. "I do. I will distract them and make my escape; they are Mindless, they will not connect the two events and should continue to carry the food after you've tainted it. Correct?" "Yes," Phaedra said, approvingly. "Just remember to save your bullets. We may need them against Jatasura.""Jatasura?!" A flash of panic made Nebula's hackles rise sharply. Phaedra sighed again, but decided to chide her host privately. Kitten, you didn't think we could just... avoid him, did you? He knows my aim is to get my scarab back. He'll probably be there waiting for us.Nebula tried to ignore Epi's curious look. Then why bother with the guards? You want to deal with guards and Jatasura both? Let's even the odds a bit, kitten. Besides, I think they'll make excellent offerings to my dear sister.Nebula's hackles rose a little bit more. Jahara, she thought to herself; then, to Phaedra: I... okay. You're sure he'll be waiting?Unless he is a simpleton, and I doubt that very much. For my own dignity, the goddess added, with a small huff. Being captured by a simpleton would be far worse than being downed by a clever opponent. "Do Epi and Zoot know?" Nebula said aloud, and the two olisikits turned to glance at her. "That Jatasura will likely be waiting? Yes," Phaedra said as soon as Nebula was finished talking. The two of them nodded once. "It's a good incentive. I want to see him go down. Hard," Epi said with a faint snarl. Zoot merely nodded again, and put one hand on the holster of his gun. "Oh. O... okay," Nebula said, and bit her lip. "Then if there is nothing else, let us go," Phaedra said. "After you, Epi, Zoot." The two olisikits looked at each other, then nodded once more. Zoot went to remove the dresser from atop the flagstone. Come this way. Phaedra tugged lightly at her host; Nebula stumbled a few steps away from Zoot and Epi. I wish to offer prayer.Prayer?! To who?To my Lord Destruction, who else? On your knees, Phaedra said, impatiently. Then, aloud, "I shall offer a brief prayer for our success. You two wait for us below, if you would." Nebula was facing the wrong direction to see the olisikits' reactions, but after a moment she heard the flagstone lift, then the soft sound of the two of them descending the ladder. Now...Nebula knelt, feeling shaky. Then she licked her lips, and her mouth began to move without her own volition. "My beloved Lord, my Emperor Destruction - grant that I be Your hand, bringing Destruction even as You wear my glory upon Your own skin. Aid me, bring Your power to bear on this traitorous one. Allow me to bring his broken form before Your throne as dearest offering, a gift to my most cherished Crown." Phaedra's voice was purring, reverent, and the odd desire that stirred in Nebula from the goddess was strange - devotion, abject and near-fanatical, yet somehow tainted. It made her skin crawl if she thought about it too much. The goddess whispered a few more words that even Nebula could not make out, then sighed happily. There. Rise, my dear... and let us away. We hold a sacred duty now. The goddess purred again, and the sound resonated in Nebula's own chest. Okay, Nebula said nervously, and scurried to join the others. ..... It was easy. Almost too easy. They found their hiding place, clinging to a ladder high above - the Mindless almost never looked up, it seemed - and watched as the two food-bearing Mindless passed underneath. Once they had passed, Zoot scrambled down and shouted, standing grim and cocksure in the tunnel below. "HEY! ASSHOLES!" Then turned in unison and stared at him, then bent to put their meal trays on the ground. Nebula could practically see Jatasura's commands whispering in their empty minds - stranger. chase. run. catch. bring to me. Zoot turned and ran just as the two Mindless launched themselves at him. The olisikit was faster by far, and he led them away down a tunnel. "Be safe," Epi whispered, before Nebula moved, climbing down the ladder to the ground and coming to rest by the abandoned meal trays. Good, good, Phaedra purred. Now, take the pendant and bless the water. The terminology made Nebula's tail twitch, but she fumbled with the cap on the poison vial. Epi had come down the ladder as well, and she removed the lids on the meal trays to reveal high-protein mush and bottles of watter. The olisikit made a face. "Ugh. Foul!" She unscrewed the lids of the water bottles quickly. "Hurry." "I know," Nebula murmured, and swallowed. Her hand shook for a moment, threatening to spill, but Phaedra exerted her control and put an end to her trembling. Slowly, she drizzled a bit of the liquid into the water, watching in distant fascination and horror as the poison swirled and vanished nicely. A gift for you, my dearest sister, Phaedra hissed, pleased. Epi quietly put the caps back on and replaced the tray covers, then tapped Nebula on the shoulder. "Hey. Jewel?" "Oh... sorry." Nebula shook herself. Tried not to think about murder. She wasn't murdering, right? It was... justice. Justice is merely vengeance with a veneer of morality. Wasn't that what Phaedra had said? Keep your illusions if they comfort you, the goddess put in, impatient, and poked her host to movement. I hear footsteps. Climb! That stirred Nebula out of her daze, and the two felinoids quickly climbed up the ladder again, clinging high up, out of direct sight. A moment later the two Mindless returned. Their quarry had eluded them, and so they had reverted to their original orders. They picked up the meal trays in unison and continued on their way. Hah! So much for intelligence. This is what you get when you surround yourself with broken things, Phaedra gloated. And now... we go to fetch what is mine. Go swiftly - I wish to see the benediction.Nebula shuddered.

One For Each Outstretched Hand XXVII: It All Comes Down to This
As Epi and Nebula snuck towards the entrance to the great hall, Zoot suddenly appeared from a side tunnel, making them jump. "********, Zoot-" Epi swore.
"Sorry," the olisikit said, mildly, but he looked pleased with himself. "Led 'em a chase. Did you get everything done?"
"Yes," Nebula replied, her tone grim. "I did."
"Good." Zoot fell into step with the rest of them. "Let's show the b*****d what-for." He put one hand meaningfully on the holster of his gun again.
"Agreed," Epi growled.
The three paced in silence until they reached the next ladder. They climbed up it quickly, forming a furry clot at the top, waiting as they clung to the cold metal rungs. It didn't take long before the heard footsteps again, and saw the two Mindless pass beneath them once more, this time without the meal trays.
Excellent. Hurry, hurry! Phaedra prodded as soon as the Mindless were gone. I wish to see!
Okay! Sheesh! Nebula inched down the ladder ahead of everyone else, then turned towards the doors that led to the great hall. They were open, just a little bit, but enough. "Ready?" she whispered, turning up to Epi and Zoot.
"Ready," Zoot replied, climbing down the ladder and offering one hand up to Epi, who nodded as she too stepped down to the tunnel floor.
"Then let us go," Phaedra purred.
THe three of them crept down the tunnel to the door, Zoot carefully peering in. "The coast is clear - the guards are eating now," he reported.
Hurry!
I am! "Good," Nebula whispered out loud, and crept inside, keeping low to the ground until she was behind the crates they'd hidden around the day before. Thus sheltered, she peeked through a crack between two crates. Sure enough, the guards by the scarab cage were too distracted by their meal - such as it was - to notice as the olisikits snunk in to hide as well.
Oh watch, see, see, Phaedra said suddenly as the guards wavered. Then, slowly, they both folded over, slumping to the ground. An offering for you, Jahara - may it strengthen you and bring you delight in this new age, the goddess crooned, ecstatically. Her desire shivered through Nebula, making the Aoide tremble for a moment.
"What?" Epi whispered in her ear.
"N-nothing," Nebula whispered back, trying not to think about the joy thrilling through her from the goddess, and the dim sick feeling in her stomach. I just killed two people. Things. And they weren't going to come back like that Rat had, either.
You're not a child, Phaedra said dismissively, waving her host's concerns away. Now, come. My victory is at hand.
"Let's move," Zoot said, and scrambled up over the top of the crates. He darted along the side of the balcony, moving with all his speed for the scarab cage on the far side. Epi passed Nebula as she followed, and then the Aoide herself was moving, the goddess spurring her on.
Faster, faster, faster, Phaedra chanted in her mind. Mine, mine, mine, mine.
But as Zoot's foot touched the dais holding the scarab cage, he suddenly froze - stopping in mid-air, a sudden rictus of horror twisting his features. Epi was too close; she tried to stop, but was caught in the same web of frozen movement as Zoot. Only Nebula managed to stay free, stopping just short of the now-hissing field of magic power, scant feet from the body of one of the guards she'd killed, staring at Epi and Zoot's silent, motionless forms. Only the soft pulse of their breathing and the flickers of panic in their eyes showed that they were alive.
"Show yourself, traitor," Phaedra demanded, batting away Nebula's jolt of terror.
"You can't tell me you weren't expecting this," came the instant response, and a shadow hissed open to release the rakshasa's long, lean form.
"Likewise," Phaedra said, moving Nebula's head in a single nod. "We are neither of us fools, after all."
"Perhaps." A smile flitted across Jatasura's face, and he walked over to lay one long finger on Epi's cheek. Pure terror flashed through the oliskit's eyes.
"Leave her alone," Nebula grated, her fists clenching at her sides.
Against all odds, Zoot managed a strangled growling sound, and Jatasura moved to touch him as well, running his fingers up and down Zoot's tail as though it were a toy. "I was not expecting such lovely pawns. You always have the most beautiful things, Phaedra."
"They are no pawns," Phaedra replied, coldly. "You would do well to release them."
"Oh?" Jatasura's smile widened, and he glanced over at Nebula with an amused expression. "It seems to me that I retain the upper hand. Yet... you are right. I do not need them." The rakshasa flicked one finger, and Epi and Zoot collapsed to the ground. For a moment they were stunned; then they scrambled up, moving to stand in front of Nebula even as their bodies shook. "Their loyalty is quite charming, don't you think?
"Shut up," Epi snarled.
"Silence," Phaedra snapped, and spurred her host forward. Nebula gently squeeze Epi's shoulder as she passed between the two olisikits, coming to rest in front of the rakshasa, her hackles raised fully. "Return to me what is mine. Swear your fealty again, and I may let you live."
Jatasura laughed, incredulously. "You will let me live? Such presumption! No, no... I think it is I that will allow you to live... as my pawn." With a lightning-swift movement, the rakshasa reached into the scarab cage, pinning the frantic bug between his fingers. Nebula tried to back away, but something invisible wrapped around her legs and tripped her. Behind her, she heard Epi and Zoot move; move, and then fall as well.
The rakshasa bent over her, smiling as he held out one hand to her - the hand holding the scarab, caged in his fingers. To Nebula's horror, her own arm lifted to meet his, unbidden, and as Phaedra snarled she realized the goddess had nothing to do with the movement either. "Such a pretty little prize. You would have done better to stay in your cage like a good little girl... but, alas, it seems punishment is called for." Gently, he gripped her hand in his own free hand, then laid the scarab on the tender flesh on the inside of her wrist. The bug's tiny footsteps were startlingly warm, and Nebula's flesh crawled in horror.
Jatasura bent to whisper in her ear, folding his body in ways that made no logical sense in order to reach her. His breath was cool and sharp in her ear. "And when your host dies, as they all do within six months... I will have your jewel for my very own. Such a lovely addition to my collection, don't you think? Perhaps that is what I will do. Collect all the jewels and hoard them away. With no hosts - no gods! What a beautiful world."
He made a gesture, and Nebula felt a sharp pain from her wrist. She let out a cry, and scrambled away as Jatasura stood again, recapturing the scarab, allowing the Aoide to cradle her stricken hand to her chest.
b*****d, Phaedra snarled.
"Look at me. Look at your master."
Against all her will, against all Phaedra's will - Nebula looked.

One For Each Outstretched Hand XXVIII: The Longest Stare
Nebula looked.
Jatasura's face was huge, filling her world, and the pain of the scarab's bite gave birth to a soft susurrus in her mind, a host of whispers like beetle wings rubbing together, speaking words - no, commands. She wobbled, and the world blurred, but suddenly Phaedra was there, bright, angry, fighting.
The goddess beat away the hypnotic chorus, forced it away at one remove, so that Nebula could hear herself think again. No. You are mine, and he will not have you! She snarled and lashed again and again. This power is mine of old. It cannot master me, and you are part of me now. You are mine.
Jatasura's eyes narrowed, and Nebula flinched and twitched as he sent his orders once more, the whispers rising into a storm. But Phaedra drove it back once more, her presence brilliant gold in Nebula's mind. Not today, not ever - Kitten! Take this strength. Hold out. Distract him- and then she was gone, and Nebula was alone with the whispers.
No. Not alone. There was bright golden fire left to her now, Phaedra's gift, and she put it between herself and the insistent voices, watched their words burn up and puff to ash.
The rakshasa was bent low over Nebula's prone form, staring into her eye and into the gem, his eyes blazing with light, all his attention focused wholly on her. Epi and Zoot were frozen, held still not by magic but by simple, mundane horror and fear.
One of Nebula's hands twitched, fingers moving. Epi caught the movement and stared at it, unsure. Then it moved again. Into a shape... a very definite shape. The thumb held up, the pointer finger held out, and the remaining three digits curled under...
An L?
No.
A gun.
Epi moved.
Good... girl...
Nebula was losing-
BAM!
The sound seemed to tear the world apart, reverberating wildly, devouring all the whispers. Then Phaedra was there, back again, tearing at the last echoes, obliterating them from her host's mind. Wake up.
Wake up!
Nebula suddenly convulsed into wakefulness, gasping and panting, scrambling up. There was something warm and wet, and something clutching at her - smoke, powder, ash -
Epi...
The olisikit was standing above her, Zoot's gun smoking in her hands, the barrel aimed straight ahead. Her face was still, frozen in an expression of desperation.
Something was clawing at Nebula's ankle. She looked down, and saw the rakshasa. Jatasura was writhing on the floor near her, one hand wrapped around Nebula's foot, the other clamped to his long neck. Blood oozed between his fingers, and Nebula realized that the warm wetness on her own body was the rakshasa's own blood.
Don't stand and stare! Get the scarab! Phaedra shrieked. That wound is merely an inconvenience to one such as him! Move while he is stunned! A blur of gold flicked past Nebula's vision. As if in a dream, she reached out and grabbed for it. A moment later, she felt the frantic buzz of wings on the inside of her fingers. Little one! Listen - I am your true master. Remember! That one... there is nothing for you within him. Nothing but food. Nebula. Rise...
Shaking, the Aoide stood up, the scarab trapped in one hand. She felt the creature calm, stop panicking; land delicately, affectionately, on the tips of her curled-in fingers. Now... Jatasura's panicked flailing was already beginning to die down as the rakshasa fought the pain and gathered his power once more.
Nebula's lips parted as she looked down at him, but Phaedra was the one who spoke. "We are enough of Greed Reborn to counter this, Jatasura. But I wonder... Are you enough of the god you would become?" With one swift motion, Phaedra brought Nebula's hand down on Jatasura's wrist, the one still clinging to her ankle. The scarab trembled for a moment, uncertain, trapped between two loyalties - the one ancient, the other learned.
"Wait-"
It chose.
Jatasura threw back his head and shrieked, the sound bubbling not only through his mouth but through the bullet hole in his throat as well. He let go of Nebula's ankle and scrambled backwards, cradling his hand to his chest, a parody of the Aoide's own movements only moments ago. And he, too, was prepared to fight - but Phaedra sent her commands, sent Nebula to kneel over him and stare into his eyes, one clawed hand holding his long chin in place.
"My precious, precious relic of old. You never did use it properly. All this time... what you could have had... what you could have done... such a pity." Phaedra sighed. "Perhaps I could give you mercy and use this power as it was meant to be used - but my friends here deserve justice. As for what you deserve..." A cruel smile flickered on Nebula's face.
Then the goddess issued her command.
Jatasura screamed again, but the sound abruptly cut off, leaving only the wheeze and burble of breath through his wound. A moment later, that sound was joined by the soft rustle as the rakshasa's hair began to fall out, beautiful silken locks sliding down his grotesque form to curl unwanted on the floor. The enraged, panicked light in his eyes dimmed and went out as all his limbs went limp.
The scarab buzzed to nestle on Nebula's own hair, between her ears.
It is done. Watch, Nebula... this is what it is to be a goddess. Take the scarab; it knows me and will know you. The goddess' voice was exhausted, but rich with her triumph.
Slowly, the Aoide raised one hand up to the top of her head; the scarab quickly hopped up to land on her fingers. She brought it down and cradled the golden creature carefully in her hands. In front of her, Jatasura stared with empty and hungry eyes at her face, waiting for a command. Any command.
Nebula drew back one foot and kicked him. Hard. Then she turned, still shaking. Epi and Zoot were behind her, trembling as well; Zoot had taken the gun back from Epi, though he was holding it in his hands much as Nebula was carrying the scarab.
The Aoide's smile was exhausted, but some of Phaedra's delight was leaking through to her host - and there was joy of her own there, too. Hadn't she - they done it? There would be no more new Mindless now... no more cases like Epi's sister, who was now justly avenged.
"Thank you," she breathed. "Thank you."
Epi's voice shook when she spoke. "Hymn."
"I know."
Zoot turned. "We should go. The Mindless-"
"Will obey the master of the scarab. Do not fear." Phaedra's voice was a mere whisper, all she could manage in her exhaustion. "We are safe. Only let us rest, and I will finish what I have begun. Clever Epi, to see my signal... I will reward you richly for your aid."
"I did nothing for you. It was all for Hymn." Epi turned away; her hands were still trembling, the hand that had held the gun still keeping the shape, as if she was still carrying the weapon even now.
Phaedra paused for one long moment, then - to Nebula's vague surprise - radiated assent. "I understand."

One For Each Outstretched Hand XXIX: Aftermath
Everything happened so quickly after that.
The Mindless of the Palace were waiting for them in the hall, their blank eyes trained to Nebula's face; they turned in perfect unison to watch her as she led Epi and Zoot between them. After asking one of them, the three were shown to Jatasura's own rooms, with the Mindless they'd asked leading them and the others trailing behind them like lost ducklings, the broken rakshasa himself wheezing and shambling along behind after the rest in grotesque fashion. Nebula wondered how he survived with that wound in his throat, but she decided not to think about it. Perhaps Phaedra had simply ordered him to live, and thus - he did.
Jatasura's rooms were expansive, expensive, redolent with luxury. Zoot and Epi went off to one of the chambers with vague, murmured thanks, leaving Nebula to take stock of the Master's chambers on her own. There was a bath at some point to wash Jatasura's blood from her fur, before Phaedra shooed all of the Mindless away and shut the door behind them.
The Aoide flopped down onto Jatasura's feather bed and pulled one of the sheets around her, too tired to really care that the sheets were silk. Still, despite her exhaustion, the events of the past two hours had her far too keyed up to actually sleep, and she tossed and turned for a while, unable to chase the memories out of her mind. The horrible whispers in the heart of her consciousness, more terrible even than Phaedra... the wet heat of Jatasura's blood as it drooled from the bubbling hole in his flesh... the mind and sanity fading out of his eyes under Phaedra's touch, her own hand holding his chin still while the goddess worked...
He deserved those things. Can you deny it?
... No. I can't. Nebula smiled in weary, grim pleasure; disturbing as it was, the rakshasa had deserved everything visited on him, and more. What will we do with him?
I shall offer him to my Lord Destruction, Phaedra purred.
The Aoide's smile deepened, grew a bit more toothy. That is perfect.
I thought you would like it.
He was... doing it wrong, you said? The scarab's power? Nebula opened her eye and looked up; the golden bug was perched on a silk hanging above her head, presumably asleep as well - if scarabs slept. She wasn't sure.
Yes. It is meant to induce hunger and desire... eventually, it may consume the soul it touches, this is true, but not like the Mindless. Never like the Mindless. Emptying the vessel is useless; worship ordered and given through truly mindless obedience is worth nothing. I have merely given him what he gave to others. I will not be able to use the scarab to full potency for some time yet... but my small power was equal to his in this regard.
Oh... I see. She thought about protesting the first part, but... what was the point? Phaedra was Greed, after all. Bringing her element to others was her nature.
As for you, my sweet kitten... you were strong. Affection bathed Nebula's mind, the goddess' touch gentle and sweet. Such a very good kitten you were today.
Nebula purred back, gently, curling up in the center of the soft mattress. And you... you saved me... True, it had been Phaedra's fault that they'd been in that situation to begin with, but the goddess' protectiveness, her desire and possessiveness...
Nobody had ever wanted Nebula like that.
Nobody.
Beloved favorite of Greed Reborn, Phaedra whispered, in a tone that made her host shiver with need. Sleep well tonight. Tomorrow we will assess, and we will go back to the Pantheon and make our offering to Destruction. Images flooded Nebula's mind, images of the rakshasa bent drooling before the Twin Crown's throne. Isn't it beautiful?
Nebula pondered this for a moment. Then she smiled. Beautiful.
Rest well, dearest kitten.

One For Each Outstretched Hand XXX: Descent of the Great GoddessThe day had been spent in profit, the Mindless bringing Jatasura's hoard together for Phaedra's delighted perusal. She couldn't take all of it, of course, but when Nebula had proposed they simply take the Palace in its entirety and not return to the Pantheon, she had instantly nixed the idea. The leaders of Achai will storm this place. I have no desire to enmesh myself in their petty politics. Let them squabble over my leavings as they like. They had, in the end, loaded two trucks with treasure and exquisite furniture. With uncharacteristic and suspicious generosity, the goddess had even permitted Zoot and Epi to select prizes for themselves. In thanks for services rendered. Ever since Jatasura's fall, the two olisikits had been very quiet, deferential, almost afraid of Nebula and Phaedra. As it should be. This is respect, kitten.
This is what it is to be a goddess. And now night was falling over Achai. Nebula stood with Zoot and Epi on the high balcony outside of Jatasura's rooms. The view was exquisite - first the gardens of the palace and the domes of the menagerie, then the glittering lights and towers of Achai's Ruby, a glory to rival the crumbling remains of the stars above. Beyond it was blackness, countryside and former suburbs consumed by the Age of Destruction, but that only made the Ruby glow even brighter in comparison. Zoot spoke first, his voice quiet. "What are you going to do?" "What would you have me do?" Phaedra spoke first, as Nebula glanced back at the two olisikits. The Aoide was now clad in a beautiful silk dress, taken from the supplies for Jatasura's women; the scarab rested gently on her shoulder, jewel-like. "What do you think, now that you know Achai for what it is?""Bring it down," Epi said immediately, her voice cold. "Every leader in that place knows what the price of their governance was, and not a damn b*****d of them cared. Bring it down." Nebula raised one eyebrow at Zoot. He squirmed for a moment, then sighed. "My boys... they'll be afraid, but I can go back to them. Take 'em out. Like you said, let the vultures fight over the remains. Achai will collapse in a few months anyway, when the Mindless start dying. Maybe sooner with no fresh ones to fill in for the ones that die every day... the city can't survive without them. Not the way it is now. Might as well give them mercy..." His voice trailed off, and he too fell silent. "Then we are decided." Phaedra prompted Nebula to turn back, to look out over the city again. "Such a pity. They honored me so well... but also so very poorly." Come, my dear. Raise the scarab high. Let us issue the command. Let us free them.Nebula reached out one hand for the scarab; the bug buzzed to land gently on her palm. Slowly she put her hands together, cupping them, then held them out in front of her. She raised her hands gently until they were held as high as she could go. The bug's wings flitted softly against her skin. "Make an end. Be free, Mindless of Achai. Rest.
Rest."A frisson of power shivered through the air; Epi made a soft sound. Yet, for a moment, it seemed that nothing had happened. Wait. Watch...It began slowly at first. A few lights in the gleaming mass that was Achai winked out, here and there; yet as time went on and Phaedra's command spread further, the darkness began to lick at the edges of the city like a living thing, chewing inwards, then taking whole shining towers at once. Nebula could practically see the Mindless on their treadmills below the city, collapsing with soft sighs as they died, freed by the goddess' orders. And as they died, so too did Achai. Before long the spreading darkness was like a flood, and for an instant there was only one light left, gleaming high in defiance atop the tallest tower. Then it went out. The lights of the palace behind them flickered and died as well, plunging them into blackness, with only the dim pulse of the shattered stars for company. It is done.Nebula cleared her throat, softly. The silence was amazing - no mechanical hums, no background buzz of electricity, no pumps, no machinery, no nothing. Nothing but birds from the menagerie, nothing but bugs in the air and the sound of their own breathing. "It is finished. They are free. All except for Jatasura... we will take him to justice before one who will deliver it. There will be no mercy." "Good," Epi hissed. "Good. I'm glad." Zoot shifted, behind them. "Goodbye, Nebula. Goodbye, Phaedra." Nebula turned, a twinge inside at the distance they kept, at the look of awe and a little fear in their faces. "Goodbye Epi, Zoot... thank you. Thank you so much." "My boys will be worried," Zoot said, looking sheepish. "I'd better go... yeah. Epi. Come on. See you..." And with that they were gone, stepping into the darkness, a light springing up in front of them a moment later as Zoot produced a flashlight. The glow bobbed down the hall, sprinted past the crouched and rocking form of Jatasura, and then vanished. Nebula let out a long slow sigh, but Phaedra turned her attention back to the view. Listen. She could hear the distant wail of sirens now, she realized, insistent, speaking to the panic that had to be consuming Achai now. I told you, did I not? When we arrived. I told you that we would make this city stop.Nebula blinked, then began to laugh. You did. You really did. And... we... really did...This is what it is to be a goddess. Power. A city brought to its knees by your hand, by your whim... and prizes to keep, to cherish as a memory.
This is what it is to be Greed.A smile spread across Nebula's face, jubilant and cruel. Yes. I understand.
I understand at last. fingertips so gently on my skin i'm underwater, i feel the flood begin fingertips so gently on my skin you're taking over and over again.

Nebula / Phaedra and Kodoku: Feeding the FlameHaisyn Fierra She finally decided it was one of the most magnificent things she'd ever seen, and honestly Kodoku had seen some pretty grand architecture. Perhaps it was the way the lava pools threw an angry glare onto the black walls and yet seemed to caress them at the same time. Something about it echoed, resonating down in the core of her soul where that smoldering lump of anger at her own world slowly burned. That urge to destroy something. She sat atop a squat building looking at the Pantheon from a distance, wondering if the white cat had spoken true. Was it really the abode of gods, reborn? She'd described the building, and said that gods lived there, but she'd said little enough else. They both knew she was hiding something that she seemed quite loath to speak of. It rubbed the mix-breed the wrong way, to be sure, but Kodoku was satisfied with that for now. There was a whole world here to explore, after all. A ruined world full of scared people, where power was held by the strong and everyone started on equal footing. Like a giant wilderness of dead cities and dying people. To tell the truth... she liked it here. Steely blue eyes peered up at the darkened sky with a fang revealing grin before she made her way back down from the building, her movements shaking the white ash that had settled in her dark hair like so many snowflakes to swirl forlornly and find another resting place. With one last jump she landed with a heavy thud, the bangles in her hair chiming wildly for a moment until after she had stood and they had time to settle. Something like a long belled sleeve that was tied tight around her upper arm but not attached to her shirt slid back up her arm as she idly scratched behind her ear with a short claw. Which way? It probably didn't matter. She was as likely to find some entertainment or a small animal to eat in one direction as another. So she started walking, idly dusting ash from the shoulders of her high collared sleeveless shirt before hooking her thumbs in the pockets of a comfortably loose pair of pants just below her double-belt. Griffin fur. She couldn't help a bit of a sneer as her thought continued. Lovely, expensive, griffin-fur cloth. You miss my clothes more than you ever missed me, don't you Mother? She idly picked up a piece of a broken brick from a crumbling wall and started tossing it from hand to hand as she walked, letting the motion and the constant soft chime from the bangles in her hair sooth her. Thoughts of her mother never helped her mood or her nerves. Though the sneer turned into a bit of a toothy grin after a moment. I'd love to see the fit you'd throw if you knew I was wandering around a place like this in bare feet and your precious griffin-fur cloth!Sosiqui The two men had driven the trucks back to the Pantheon from Achai, dreaming of riches and plunder, and likely of treachery as well. But Phaedra would have her prizes... and she would not have such petty beings scurrying back to the city, spreading tales and laying pathetic webs of ideas that they dared to call plans. So Nebula had served them drinks. Now, the Aoide was tugging the first body unceremoniously down the stairs. The Mindless remains of the rakshasa Jatasura, once Master of the Mindless himself but now reduced by Greed's vengeance, shambled behind her with the second corpse. Nebula was humming off-key under her breath, contentedly. They wouldn't be bringing trouble back any time soon, no, nor taking any of their lovely plunder. A splash in the lava would remove them permanently from the world. Haisyn Fierra Kodoku drifted to the edge of the buildings to get a slightly closer look at the Pantheon. It was certainly more... intimidating from ground level. And somehow it only served to further fascinate her, especially when a familiarly shaped feline form and... something else stepped out carrying corpses. She knew they were corpses and not just unconscious, somehow, perhaps because she was no stranger to bodies. She'd seen no sign of the occupants from outside, and somehow that had kept her too unnerved to approach. But now? Well, they were obviously occupants, and this black felinoid was very like the white cat she'd met shortly after arriving, which gave her nerve enough to approach. And what did she say as she drifted close enough to be heard over the bubble and hiss of the lava? "I don't suppose those are edible?" Not that she'd actually eat human meat unless she was really starving; she hated the taste. She was just... bored enough. Though many people tended to assume whether she said anything or not with her patches of fur, claws, and sharp teeth that she'd do just such a thing. And thus far it had kept most people leery enough of her that they left her alone, so it suited her. She noted with some level of amusement that the burning glow of the lava pools made her golden-bronze skin shine with an orange glow, and that the yellow in the light made the golden gem in the black cat's eye almost burn with reflected light. Something about that gem... made her fur want to stand on end. "...You're not like the other cat I met, are you?" Sosiqui Nebula jumped slightly at the sudden intrusion; the rakshasa bumped into her and she flinched away from the creature, flicking out one hand, gesturing for it to stop. It sat back on its long haunches like an animal, foreclaws wrapped around the legs of its burden, and waited for her next order with a blank and empty gaze. "Edible? No... not unless you enjoy poisoned food. I was going to feed them to the lava." Inside her mind, Phaedra uncurled with a soft, curious sound. What is this, here? Such an odd shape, such a strange... taste... interesting. At the mention of another cat, Nebula stiffened and her tail lashed twice, hard. "I am me," she said, pointedly. Asherah again?!Haisyn Fierra Kodoku bent in half in a bow and motioned with both arms for Nebula to proceed. "Oh? By all means, don't let me stop you then." She looked thoughtful as she straightened. "Actually... I've always wanted to toss someone in a lava pit, would you mind?" It's not you Mother, but I can pretend. It was one of any number of things she'd wished she could do, at one point or another. But her mother had all the power. There was a vehemence in Nebula's tone, and the reply in itself gave lie to another story entirely. But was it one she really wanted to delve into? Probably not. This was for the sake of entertainment and perhaps information about the Pantheon. " White cat, I met. Zephyr, I think. She said there were gods living here, and she's waiting for her Lord or Lady to return so she can serve them. Something. She didn't really seem to want to tell me very much." She lifted her hands and shrugged in the "what can you do?" fashion. Sosiqui Nebula flicked a wordless question at Phaedra. This was an odd situation, someone coming up to them out of nowhere... someone not blinking an eye at the idea of throwing dead bodies into lava. Someone wanting to help, even. ... I see no reason why not, the goddess said, after a moment. Be wary - this one may be unstable, with a taste for dark deeds in this Age... yet useful. Yes. Offer courtesy. She purred, lightly. Perhaps a potential conquest... perhaps even a follower. Perhaps, perhaps... Nebula nodded. "If you really want to, I don't mind... er... you can take that one." She pointed back at the rakshasa. "Drop it," she added, in a firm tone. The creature immediately released the corpse from its grasp. The mention of the cat being white made Nebula relax briefly. "Oh, good... white. Good, that's good..." Another Aoide, likely... but don't fixate on it! Pay attention to what she says, and to what she doesn't say! She wants information. Offer her a tidbit, Phaedra hissed, prodding at her host. "Oh. Gods, here... yes. That's true." Nebula kicked at the corpse she was moving, nudging it closer to the edge of the nearest lava pool. "There are many gods being reborn here. The white cat was probably a servant of one of them." Not too much at once, kitten.Haisyn Fierra Kodoku couldn't be sure if she really scented that small level of insecurity in Nebula over the hot, sulfurous fumes surrounding them, but her eyes were once again drawn to that gem in her eye and something told her that it wouldn't be wise to push her luck with this one the way she had with Zephyr. So she nodded when her request was accepted and eyed the rakshasa warily the entire time she took to retrieve the body and back away. It was obvious that it did take a little bit of effort on her part to hoist the body up over her shoulder, but she just almost made it look easy. Then she moved near the edge of the lava pool, wrinkling her nose involuntarily at the even stronger smell of sulfur, and shifted her grip to heave the corpse like a very large sack of potatos into the molten rock. If Phaedra was looking for signs of insanity then, there were none to be had. There was no crazed glee or anything of the sort as she watched the body hiss and bubble and burn as it sank, just a grim satisfaction mixed with a well practiced portion of bitter disappointment. So many things said and unsaid in that single look. She hmmed slightly at what Nebula told her. It was really the same thing the other Aiode had said, except that this was more of a confirmation and somehow coming from this one it seemed far more credible. And also the mention of them being "reborn", and not simply "returning". She was fortunate, perhaps, that her ears had fur but lacked the mobility of her father's people, because they likely would have given away her interest in that single word. "And are you a god reborn, then, to have such strange creatures in your thrall?" She pointed at the rakshasa. Kodoku had no idea what it was, though it resembled some of the beasts known on her world as demons. But it lacked the stink those creatures had... and it was also quite obviously under the control of the black cat completely and utterly, not simply bound to her service as was often the case with those that summoned demons she was familiar with. Something had changed, too, in the hybrid's stance and her tone of voice. More serious and less playing at a game. Ready to believe... not worship, no. But believe. Truth be told it was only Harmodius that would make her bend a knee as things stood right now, for Balance and especially the Destruction side of it was the one thing she could truly understand and appreciate. Not that she yet knew he even existed as an entity and not just an ideal. Sosiqui In with yours as well, kitten. Complete the offering, Phaedra purred as she watched the first corpse catch, burn, and sink into the roiling flow. Nebula inched a bit closer to the heat of the lava, warily; then she eased the second corpse in, taking utmost care not to splash or something. The lava licked up the body's skin and soon set it afire too, and it belched a sickly-sweet black smoke before it, too, was swallowed up. Then came her next question, and Nebula smiled, the expression thin and sly. "I am not, but I bear one who is." She reached up one hand and tapped lightly on the golden gem with one claw. "We will rule together." Of course. Haisyn Fierra Kodoku huffed air back out through her nostrils at the peculiar scent the smoke gave when mixed with the sulfur fumes. Then she gave a sliver of a grin of her own in response to Nebula's sly little smile and peered a little more openly at the gem. "I knew there was something strange about it..." Then she shrugged slightly and gave a bow to Nebula, one with her arms tilted up and pointing beside and slightly behind her, fingers spread and head down. A bow her mother hated but no one else seemed to mind, even the Phoenix-people she was imitating. After she straightened she gave Nebula a slightly searching look. "Well then... who have I the apparently unique honor of addressing? I am Kodoku..." A sardonic smile passed across her face briefly when she said her name. My name and my curse. Thank you SO much, Mother... And then on an entirely different note she peered at the rakshasa and asked, "What is that thing?" Sosiqui Phaedra stretched languidly in Nebula's mind. I suppose I will hold court, kitten... pardon me. She lightly nudged the Aoide's control to one side, permitting her to retain the body as a whole but taking speech for her own, noting with pleasure that her host stepped aside willingly for her now. She was doing so well. "I am Phaedra, Imperatrix, the goddess of Greed," she said, her voice markedly different from Nebula's own. More sophisticated, a deep, rich alto. "And that poor creature- her tone shifted to mocking, for a moment, all of it directed at the rakshasa - "was one who thought to best me at my own game. He has learned better now. And why have you come here, Kodoku?" The goddess tried the name on, delicately, enjoying the odd roll of the vowels. Haisyn Fierra Both of Kodoku's thin, delicate eyebrows rose at the change in the voice, right before a not-quite grimace flashed across her face at the word Greed. And most definitely with a capital letter. Quite likely every bit as controlling and conniving as her mother... and yet... she'd been courteous enough, or had her... companion? be courteous. And there was no misplaced animosity at her mixed blood, nor did Kodoku hold a personal vendetta with her, so she smoothed the expression over with a thoughtful look. That look was also quickly replaced with a grin that was nothing short of malicious as she looked at the rakshasa again. "It looks like he didn't pay attention to your lessons the first time." Perhaps death was too good a fate for her mother. Perhaps something far more ruinous would be a more satisfying fate... Phaedra's question caught her rather off guard and she actually paused for a moment. "I didn't come here intentionally. People on my world thought that opening a Gateway without specifying a destination spelled death... but... apparently not. Not for me, at least." The bitter look returned to her face. "I'm far happier with this... though I'd have been satisfied with the other, as long as I was free of that place and that woman that dared to call herself my mother." She gave a slightly apologetic half-grin. "She also called herself my Imperatrix. Forgive me if I come across as disrespectful, but no one there, least of all her, ever gave me a reason to learn respect for anything. And I'm pretty sure that if my mother believed in gods at all, she'd be sending you most of her praises." Anything doing with her old world, and especially her mother, was a raw wound on Kodoku's psyche... and prodding at it made words and pain spill out, and she resented it on some level. Even if she was doing it because she knew it was likely a bad idea to piss off a goddess at first meeting. Though why on earth she'd felt compelled to add that last bit she did not know... Sosiqui "Such a pity she does not, then - I school those who would claim me as their patron with more manners, more... civility then to do such things. Desire need not bear a cruel face, after all." A smile flickered on Nebula's lips. "But you have come to a wonderful place. This world is blessed by Destruction. All barriers of so-called 'civilization' and 'morality' have been broken here... better for those such as you or I to forge a new definition of such things, yes? It is true freedom." Haisyn Fierra "Oh, she loves her things... but she's a spoiled brat. She was handed everything she ever wanted because of her family. If she ever had to earn anything..." Oh. Oh! That would be perfect... to see her mother fall and have to start over. To see her stripped of everything she thought was so important, and left alone. Like me. That would be... One word made Kodoku freeze, thoughts and attention fully focused on Phaedra for once. Through her eyes one could almost see the shiver of reaction right down to the core of her soul. "Destruction?" Destruction did this? Really did this? The darkened skies, the dying stars, the earthquakes and disasters that reached even to her world, though not as strongly... was the result of the active will of a real entity? "Destruction is real? There was the ache of fascination and awe a mortal should have when faced with a god. If Phaedra had had any questions remaining about where Kodoku's loyalty lay, they'd likely just been answered. It took a moment for her thoughts to catch up with the rest of what Phaedra had said. "Freedom... yes." This world presented her with a freedom she'd not had before. An opportunity to be herself, and face only the consequences of her actions, not the added frustration of people trying to offload the sins of her father's forebears onto her. And as interesting as it was to know she lived in a world with actual gods... being near to the Destruction she had always so appreciated back "home" gave her a thrill of something that was like fear and joy at once that she didn't really understand. Sosiqui "Handed everything? How terribly boring. Where's the fun in that?" Nebula/Phaedra made a dismissive gesture. It was much, much more fun for the goddess to plot, to acquire things through guile and play, than to simply get it for no reason at all. Then a raw hunger crept into Kodoku's eyes, and Phaedra purred internally. Ahh, so that is what you desire... "He most certainly did. Most noble and exalted Lord," the goddess whispered, prompting her host to take a step closer to the woman, speaking the words into her ear as if it were a most precious secret. "This glorious temple before you is his holy ground. You stand at the epicenter, Kodoku." Haisyn Fierra Kodoku warred with herself for a moment. The temptation, ah! To step in and attempt to see the incarnation of something she held so dear. But the way Phaedra referred to him; noble and exalted Lord. She could not imagine a goddess of Greed so singing another's praises idly. Though it might just be her way of trying to pull the hybrid under her sway. Still... "No. I stand near the epicenter." Destruction was inside the temple, after all. She was not. Though her previous fascination with the building had risen exponentially. "Near the epicenter of power, as always, and if ever I would respect something it would be that sanctity." Something about the way she said it hinted that she'd not ever bothered to respect the sanctity of the other epicenters of power she'd been near. Namely her mother's. Not that she didn't want to go in; but as idly as she stood near a creature even of the magnitude Phaedra's not yet fully reborn self held as opposed to mortals in general, the thought of stepping unwelcome into an abode of multiple gods, and especially Destruction, was inviting who knew what wrath to fall on her head. Kodoku was wolf at heart, and while her father's people did not hold hierarchy in such strict method as the common lupines, she still understood that pissing off the alpha got you into deep s**t. Sosiqui "You may enter, if you wish - He is not holding court upon His throne at this precise moment, but my dearest Lord welcomes true petitioners." And what would he think if I brought him one so ardent as this, in addition to my sacrifice? Nebula glanced quickly over at Jatasura, the rakshasa sitting crouched like a dog behind her, staring at nothing while he had no command from her to perform. Lord Harmodius wouldn't destroy her, would he?I doubt it. He does receive true worshipers - He is after all a god, if the most exalted and First of us all. The following of mortals may not be as desperately required for him as it is for the rest of the Pantheon, but it is still ambrosia, make no doubt about that. Aloud, she said, "Come, if you like, and see the glory of the gods' return. I know you will respect it, even as you have said... but you may respect from within as well as without. No harm will come to you unless you invite it with your own actions, and I mark you as a more clever creature than that."Why do you want her to come inside?Do you enjoy breathing ash and lava fumes?... Point. "As she says, you can come in if you want to," Nebula said, nodding to Kodoku. "I'm going to go back inside myself soon. I can't take too much more of the fumes." Haisyn Fierra Point indeed. Though Kodoku's temptation rose at Phaedra's invitation, it was Nebula's honest comment that cemented her decision. She huffed air back out through her nostrils again even as she grinned a bit. "Hmm. Yes. Bit warm out here, too." She bowed again, both arms pointing toward the building in invitation for Phaedra and the black cat to proceed her. She should remember to ask the Aoide's name... And she certainly hoped she was clever enough not to anger the gods within. And going in behind Phaedra seemed safer both in regards to the other deities that might be inside and for keeping in the goddess' good graces. Sosiqui "Open the door," Phaedra said. The command was directed at the rakshasa, who startled into motion and shambled to the doors, heaving them open before going idle to one side again. Hmmmhm. The goddess purred warmly in Nebula's mind. I shall never, ever grow tired of that. Come now, kitten.Nebula nodded, apparently to herself, then walked through the doors ahead of Kodoku, turning around afterwards and beckoning the other to follow. A second, sharper gesture was for the rakshasa, who moved ready to shut the doors once Kodoku had come through. "This is the Pantheon - and there is the Throne of Destruction." Behind Nebula the entrance to the hall flanked with dragon statues, the throne backed with flames, was just visible. Haisyn Fierra Kodoku followed Nebula inside, or Phaedra, or whichever of the two it was. She saw the nod and could only assume that there was some conversation going on that she was not privy to; something that likely involved her. It left her feeling unsettled, not to know, but then she also would have expected such, especially from a goddess of Greed. If she could find a way to use the hybrid to her advantage, she was sure that Phaedra would at least try to do so, and it seemed plausible that Kodoku was even now playing into some scheme. But... if scheme it was, for the moment Kodoku wanted to play along. Somehow it didn't rankle so much, and on a level was even entertaining, to think she was involved in the scheme of a true deity. And for even so much as a chance to gaze at Destruction's throne even when he was not present she felt she owed Phaedra something of a debt; not that she was going to say such aloud. She prefered to repay her debts in her own ways. Kodoku drifted just past Nebula, and then paced slowly past the entrance to the Throne Room, still remaining several feet from the door. Once past it, though, she stepped slowly closer until she was pressed silently against the wall just beside the doorway, hands resting against the stone of the wall and only one eye peering around the edge to look into the room. Oddly even the chime of the bangles in her hair was silent for the moment, almost as if they understood her strange mood. It was foreign to her to feel either joy or fear in noticable amounts; to feel so much of both at once left her shaking slightly and feeling somewhat vulnerable. She turned away, finally, with a grimly amused sort of smile on her face. "I think... if just a throne does that to me... it might be a good thing he's not sitting on it right now. I have a feeling I'd pass out, and that usually makes horrible first impressions." Long had she pondered on the reactions of the populace of her world if the gods were to truly return, after most had forgotten they ever were. Somehow it had never occurred to her to ponder how she would react. There was a certain level of unreality to it, especially in that she didn't think twice about speaking with Phaedra the way she'd have spoken to any of her mother's peers that would have let her do so, and yet when faced with a god that actually held meaning to her - and a god among the gods, it seemed! - she was reduced to feeling like... a quaking child. It almost, just almost, made her want to laugh. "You live here, you said. What about your... room? Can I see it? Or..." She did snort softly in amusement then. "It just occurred to me you might have duties to attend to. I thank you for entertaining the urge to put up with me." Her tone still held amusement, but she was being earnest enough. But whether Phaedra would continue to keep up the conversation or went back to doing whatever it was she did, Kodoku needed to get Destruction's throne out of sight, and maybe out of mind, for a little while. Even in knowing that it was still just behind her, her mind was still reeling from the strange effect it had. Sosiqui What do you think I should do?Such an odd creature. Brash, but not stupidly so... only just. Phaedra mulled it over, her thoughts flicking lightning-quick over and through Nebula's own. The thought of drawing Kodoku into the Labyrinth at once was a tempting one, but... No, the goddess decided, after a bare moment. This is a start; we must not seem desperate. It is a delicate dance, learning such balance. Otherwise, we risk losing what respect with have gained. Nebula nodded to herself again, then focused fully on Kodoku, a faint smile on her face. "You are correct. We really only came downstairs to take out the garbage." Not cold, kitten. You are busy now, that is all.Right. "The gods live on the upper floor. That way -" she pointed towards the second staircase "-leads to Destruction's chambers. I wouldn't go there, if I were you. The other staircase goes up to where many of the Pantheon have chambers of their own..." Nebula shrugged, then smiled more openly. "Perhaps sometime we can meet again." "And when that time comes, you must tell me about your mother - what she's like. What she has," Phaedra added, with a faint purr. The desire there was plain; as was what the goddess implied. Is that a good idea?Perhaps. Perhaps not. Our lives do not hinge on engaging everything that comes through the door... but if it is indeed a good idea, it would be quite... amusing. The goddess laughed, internally. Haisyn Fierra Coldness didn't bother Kodoku as much is might. She was used to it. And also, Nebula's initial coldness wasn't specifically for her, so it was much like water off a duck's back. Her lips twitched momentarily toward a grin at the garbage bit. Things like that... were amusing to her. She performed her Phoenix-bow again. "Then I will not keep you." She looked around again, giving one last longing/fearful glance toward the throne before she started to step away when Phaedra spoke. Her lips quirked again, and this time bowed with her hands pressed together just below her lips almost as if in prayer. "As you will, Den'aisae." A small obeisance, but a mark of respect none the less, and one she had given perhaps twice in her memory. And her memory stretched a long way, for a mortal. "When next we meet." She exited, not exactly with haste but with a growing sense of urgency, pausing once past the lava pools to look back. Yes... she'd be back. How could one not be drawn to the abode of gods, especially when one had been invited to return? It certainly made life more interesting.

Solo: Dance of Balance
As Nebula slumbered, Phaedra roamed - though not physically. The goddess instead paced through the 'landscape' of her host's mind, pondering the state of things, thinking idly about her next move. So far, everything had gone fairly well, mostly according to her plans... but the whole affair was certainly a challenge. Oh, she'd toyed with many a twisted mind before, but always from a distance, from the outside, like a cat playing with a mouse.
This was something different. Nebula's thoughts swayed and whirled about unpredictably, her shifts of mood so mercurial that even Phaedra had a hard time keeping her host stable. The goddess had taken every opportunity to align herself as the Aoide's emotional anchor, offering herself as Nebula's only solace, the only one that could give her the affection she so desperately craved.
But it had been a near thing. The kitten had nearly latched on to Epi.
How fortunate that I scared her away. Such fear, such terrified respect. Phaedra purred inwardly, remembering the look in the olisikit's eyes after they had taken Jatasura. If Nebula had clung to her, it would have seriously undermined the goddess' plans. She would have shifted, desperate for care like a child, and mothering Epi would have given it, cozened and coddled the poor broken Aoide. A substitute for her dead sister.
Fortunate, indeed. Phaedra had no desire to run through this world, eking out a meager existence while her host was tended to like a helpless child. She knew the Aoide would have crumbled under that treatment, submitted gladly to weakness if it brought tender care along with it.
But Phaedra had, in the end, won. She was the kitten's anchor now. Not Epi, not that blasted Dragon King. Her. This mind, alternately as easy to influence as soft clay and shifting wild as a storming sea, was under her thrall.
If only the sea would calm. She was expending a truly ridiculous amount of influence to hold Nebula's sanity in place. It was amazing that the Aoide was even functional, had ever been functional - only her fanatical and desperate devotion to Tien Lung, fed by the compulsion to loyalty that was natural to all Aoidei, had kept her from shattering before, and that only just.
This creature is astonishingly dangerous. The thought both amused and alarmed Phaedra. But in the end... it would not matter. Try as Nebula might, Phaedra would win, inexorably.
Let her think that Greed would - hah - share. The Aoide was far too trusting of those in authority. She'd never even questioned that Phaedra's whispered promises of power might be lies, even as she watched the goddess manipulate those around her.
So desperate for that to be true that she blinds herself, willingly. So frantic and hungry.
Phaedra knew what to do with hunger.
Perhaps it had been another gift, another challenge from her Emperor - sending her a perfect host with which to reawaken and hone her craft once more. She may have taken Jatasura, but that was no true capture. That was merely vengeance.
Nebula would be her real first conquest in this new life.
Purring quietly, the goddess resettled to watch and wait.

Nebula / Phaedra and Ixa / Jahara: Reunions, Part IProlixity Ixa crossed the street slowly and reluctantly, making her way to the Pantheon with small and almost hesitant steps. Why she was coming back here, she wasn't entirely sure. Morbid curiosity, maybe. She had half convinced herself last night that she meant to find the god who ruled this horrid temple, demand or beg him to release her from Jahara's poisonous touch. Now, though, surrounded by the wavering heat of lava and looking up at the imposing dark walls, she wasn't so certain that that was any kind of a good idea. She was here now, though, and it would be cowardly to turn away. Even if she was uncertain of her purpose. She made her way inside, wings huddled tight against her back. The emptiness of the imposing room made her feel small; she braced herself against it and padded defiantly towards the throne. She would not allow the temple's ambiance to intimidate her. Perhaps you should. It's not an idle warning, my dear."I didn't ask you." Ixa prowled slowly around the bases of the statues, looking up at them. The low firelight picked out details, then cast them once again into obscurity. You never do. Jahara chuckled. I could give you such advice, if you would hear me."No. Thank you." Ixa sighed and continued her slow prowl, her long part-furred form backlit and shadowed by the half-light. It was an appropriate setting for a monster. She felt a sharp pang of longing for the way things once would have been; she could have guarded a fine hoard, a deep catacomb, a beautiful dungeon. She came to a halt at the foot of the throne, sat down, stared meditatively up at the empty seat. "I was content enough before you," she said softly. Perhaps.Sosiqui Phaedra was impatient, hungry, her attention flitting back and forth even as Nebula continued to unpack the boxes from the Palace. The Aoide removed treasures and relics, precious and beautiful things, holding them up for Phaedra to observe... yet, after a few minutes of surprisingly non-committal responses from the goddess, even Nebula had to notice that something was off. What? You're not even paying attention, she thought, with a frown. I desire the coming of my Emperor, the goddess replied, and a curl of dissatisfaction wrapped for a moment around her host's mind. Why does He not settle upon His throne, that I might bring him offering and gift?Nebula glanced over at Jatasura. The Mindless rakshasa was parked in a corner, doing absolutely nothing except breathe and blink. It was unnerving; she couldn't understand how the people of Achai had tolerated the presence of thousands of them, every day. People will tolerate astonishing things if it is to their benefit, kitten. Mortals are cruel and cold and very good at ignoring the obvious. The goddess laughed darkly for a moment, but the sound turned into an impatient mental grumble again before too long. I grow tired of it as well. Such a creature is no fun whatsoever - no mind to play with, no desire to appeal to, no nothing. Hollow and empty and pointless! The only use there now is sweet meat and blood for my Emperor...And that turned Phaedra's thoughts back to her previous complaint. Nebula tried to quietly ignore the grumbling and kept unpacking. I cannot bear it any longer. The goddess roused again after a few more minutes. What?We will go. We will go downstairs, and we will seek the Throne, and see what can be done. Phaedra prodded her host to move, suddenly decisive. Hurry up!I'm moving, I'm moving! Nebula sighed and put down the orb she'd been unwrapping, then straightened out her clothing and peeked in the mirror to make sure she was presentable, just in case. What do you want to take, if He...The rakshasa. And... hm. The goddess mulled this over for a moment. Nothing else. We will offer to Him His choice of gift, but I will not bring my beautiful treasures out for any claptrap to stare at. Distaste coiled lightly through their shared thoughts. Nebula nodded, then beckoned at Jatasura. The rakshasa lifted his head and shambled over. "Come. We're going downstairs. Follow at a short distance." She set off through the tiny Labyrinth without waiting, her tail twitching at the shuffly sounds that the rakshasa's movements made behind her. Down the stairs - and there was something, someone there. Nebula sharply drew in one breath, surprised... Is it...?No, but... ah! A rush of dark delight flooded from the goddess. Oh, how fortuitous, how fair and lovely... She shoved Nebula aside, lightly, allowing the Aoide to maintain their stance and posture, but taking the mouth for her own. "Oh, my sister!"Nebula stiffened slightly, not entirely because of the goddess taking some control away from her. Jahara... Ixa... They hadn't met for some time. Was Ixa still... fighting? That would be stupid. Didn't she know how wonderful it was, to be a goddess? Prolixity Ooohhhhhh, Jahara crooned, delighted.Ixa turned swiftly, dread curling in the pit of her stomach. That was Phaedra; even had she not remembered Nebula's voice, the silky pleasure in Jahara's reaction would have been enough to let her know. Was Nebula gone, then? She braced herself for that knowledge, feeling suddenly lonelier. She had known it would happen, but that made it no easier. "You," she said evenly. You should let me use your voice, Jahara coaxed, and sent subtle little curls of pleasure through Ixa's body at the thought, just below the level of conscious perception. Neither of us would have to be tired, then."Are you mad?" Ixa muttered under her breath. "You think I'll let you use me like that if I can help it?" That, or I can simply take, and you will be unable to speak or move until I am done, as we've done before. Or you may give me a bit of freedom, and I'll return the favor, lovely.Ixa hunched in on herself. She hated the idea, and she hated the knowledge that it was one of two equally unpalatable courses of action, and she hated the realization that she was considering it. Sosiqui "Ixa!" Nebula ran up to the sphinx, her one eye bright with happiness at seeing her... well, friend, she supposed. Sort of. "How are you and Jahara doing? Oh..." Her gaze lost focus for a moment. Then she nodded. "Did you like the present we gave you?" Her ears perked, hopeful. "Such a sweet thing, to give blessing and receive blessing in return," came Phaedra's rich alto voice from the same mouth, seeming strange after Nebula's more high-pitched tones. Prolixity Ixa stared at Nebula for a long moment, shocked and uncomprehending. The catgirl looked ... happy. She moved with a strange touch of slinky confidence, a self-assuredness that she had most certainly not had before; and she was dressed richly, gold and jewels dripping from her. And yet it was not solely Phaedra. This was Nebula, Nebula sharing her body with the jewel she carried. She looked so happy. Ixa flinched from the thought. She had consoled herself with the thought that she was not alone in her angry misery, in her forced servitude. It was a horrid thing, she realized. Much of her consolation had come from the certainty of another's suffering. And Nebula was not suffering. You see, Jahara whispered. Nebula has been reasonable, and she has been rewarded. Look what my sister has given her! She insinuated affectionate pride into Ixa's mind, affecting uncomplicated pleasure at the well-being of Phaedra's host."I am - well," Ixa answered, haltingly. A lie. She couldn't bring herself to tell Nebula that she had been pursuing the weary hunt for a way to escape the fate she sensed approaching. The Aiode's smile was like a betrayal. Ixa grimaced inwardly. What was she becoming, that she would begrudge this poor lost girl her happiness? "Present?" she repeated, feeling dull and stupid. In the back of her mind, she felt the gentle pressure of Jahara's presence, the goddess coaxing her to release a small portion of her control. And it was gentle, for once. Jahara was asking instead of demanding. Ixa could not cry, but she envied creatures who could. Just for a moment. Reluctantly, aware of the alternative, she opened a little c***k in the armored wall that held Jahara away from the use of her body. Exultation. Triumph. Jahara held herself carefully and firmly in check, not letting her emotions leak through. She would not betray to her host the enormity of this seemingly tiny victory. Carefully and politely, she insinuated herself into the opening Ixa had allowed her.
"It was a beautiful present, my loves," she said. "I was so very happy; I gave her a little, too, so that she could see how lovely it was."Ixa flinched. The sensation was a bizarre one. She inhabited her body, controlling it, fully capable of motion and expression, and yet her mouth and tongue and throat moved without her volition, and the voice that emerged was not her own. Locked away from herself, she had had anger and stasis to distract her. To give over control willingly seemed a violation of a different sort. Sosiqui "Oh, good - I'm glad," Nebula said, pleased. Inside, Phaedra carefully funneled away the recalled memories of the sacrifices within Jatasura's 'labyrinth', shoved the echoes of horror down and well under the surface - sanitizing it until only a clean and naive pleasure at having helped her 'friend' remained. "We had to do something to rescue them, so Phaedra thought if we used poison, it would help you too..." That was the wonderful thing about the incident at Achai - no matter what Phaedra's motivation had truly been, the result, the thing everyone could see (except, of course, the people of Achai itself) was that a rising goddess had brought down a city grown fat and corrupt on a barbaric form of brainwashing and slavery. Phaedra purred inwardly, to herself, letting the kitten focus on Ixa's presence. It was quite brilliant, really. Such a magnanimous goddess. Such a just goddess. Indeed.Huh?Never mind, kitten. Phaedra re-focused her attention on Jahara, now that her host's responses had been properly managed. "How good to see you well, dear sister - and your host, too! Yes, the present was for you both, a gift from the two of us together. My ideas, Nebula's execution. She did quite well." The goddess wrapped a quick pulse of approval around her host's consciousness. "And I have brought a gift for our Emperor as well."Nebula had nearly forgotten; she looked back, quickly, and saw the rakshasa idling behind her, sidled up almost hidden by one of the dragon statues. "Oh... I forgot." She made a face at the rakshasa's own empty visage. "He was the one who was doing everything. Taking people's minds. Making them slaves. We stopped that." Her voice was full of pride in the accomplishment. "We're taking him to Destruction, to be judged." Her grin got a little more toothy - there was no doubt that Jatasura deserved anything and everything that their Emperor could devise. Prolixity And Nebula spoke to her and to Jahara in the same breath now, as though that was entirely normal, entirely natural. Ixa wound her tail tightly around her haunches, distressed and upset and unable to quite pin down why. She should be happy for Nebula, that the catgirl had made peace with her fate. Jahara purred and sent a subtle pulse of strength through Ixa's body. Yes. That thought is a good one, darling; you should be happy for the poor weak foolish thing. She remained silent. If she spoke to agree with Ixa's thoughts, the sphinx might become suspicious of the direction her emotions were taking.
Poisons, to clear her sister's way and to send her a sweet, sweet present. Jahara was utterly pleased. It was beautiful to be so loved. The rakshasha's blank, mindless expression horrified Ixa, but as she listened to Nebula's explanation of what the man had done, some of her horror was replaced by disgust. She studied the empty-eyed man, her lips tugging into a slight snarl. Did he deserve to be judged? To be eaten? She recoiled from the thought, knowing that that knowledge, that pleasure, was tinted with Jahara's understanding. But had she been in a place to bring down a slaver, a destroyer, she would have done so, and taken triumphant pleasure in seeing him brought down. "How disgusting," she said aloud, and hoped that Nebula wouldn't notice that she hadn't specified what was disgusting. "A fine gift," Jahara said. "The final judgment is not ours; you show delicacy in bringing him before our Lord, my sister." She took the small risk of smiling with Ixa's mouth, and looked for just a moment through the sphinx's eyes to gaze into Phaedra's gem. When she could, she would have to ask for the full story. No doubt Phaedra was carefully choosing her words. Until the day when they could take their hosts' bodies and be free again, caution remained necessary.Sosiqui Nebula wrung at her hands slightly, her face taking on a genuine look of distress. "It was disgusting! He took their minds, thousands of them, and they..." She shook her head, hard. "They could only stay alive for a few months, and... it was horrible." The Aoide looked down, and her tail lashed once. Then she glanced back at the rakshasa with a look of pure hatred. "He did that to Epi's sister, too. She was someone I met in that city. In Achai. She helped us, her and Zoot..." When Nebula's words faltered, Phaedra lightly pushed at her thoughts again, allowing her to linger on how cruel Jatasura had been. How terrible, what he had done. How merciful and kind, what they had done. Then she took up the empty space with her own words. "That... thing... had one of my elements of old, and misused it horribly to commit his most audacious and terrible acts. We have regained that power now, and turned it back on him. A fitting fate, for now, until our Emperor can judge."Nebula looked back at Ixa. "It was hard," she admitted. "It was really hard - but we did it, the two of us, and Zoot and Epi too. The whole city just stopped. Oh, you should have seen it!" Her ears rose. "It is not gracious to linger only on one's own pride," Phaedra interjected, gently. Nebula paused. "What of you, my sister? Ixa?""Yes, yes, what have you been doing?" Nebula latched eagerly onto the new topic. So stilted. So empty, Phaedra thought, to herself. In a way the conversation was an enjoyable challenge of careful speech, yet in another sense it was maddening, to be unable to really speak freely to her sister. Before there had been no reason to be anything other than exactly what they were... But now the game was in progress. Prolixity "I've been - " Ixa paused, mouth twisting slightly before she forced it back to a neutral expression. She'd been trying to find a way out, racing against time for a possible hint of anything that might let her fight against the predatory consciousness of the poisonous jewel that winked in her flesh. That was the truth, and it would distress poor sweet Nebula. Nebula, who had little time left, if she judged right. Nebula, who had given up fighting, and sparkled brilliant with her comfort and pleasure. "I've been studying," she revised her thought. "It's been some time since I had the leisure to read as much as I liked." Oh, prettily worded. Jahara admired the way the sphinx had neatly sidestepped the issue; Ixa had told the truth, in a way that would likely satisfy Nebula's curiosity, but she had neatly omitted the purpose behind her actions.
"I have been reading also," she put in. "It is no hardship to spend our time in comfort. She reads what she likes, and I too enjoy her studies. I have learned so much of what has passed while we slept, sister. We have slept ages, and so much has happened."Ixa flinched mentally at Jahara's tone. She had known that the goddess was paying attention to what she read, but it had somehow failed to occur to her that Jahara could draw conclusions from the texts as easily as she. Why was she so tired, her mind so dull and slow? A dangerous path of inquiry. Jahara sent a subtle pulse of pain through the skin around her jewel, leaned very gently on Ixa's thoughts.Ixa's hand rose to rub at the jewel. The skin had healed into scar tissue, yes, but it still ached from time to time. Maybe it was only that her body continued its attempt to reject the intruder. That would make sense. She had been silent a few more seconds than was polite, she realized. "Excuse me," she apologized. "It still aches, sometimes." Sosiqui Childish delight, glee, chirping pleasantries. That was a good road to take, a good place to keep her host's mind. She hadn't ever had a friend before, had she... not before Epi and Zoot, and they weren't here now. Quietly, Phaedra encouraged Nebula to think along those lines. Giddy like a little schoolgirl, yes..."Don't you have a place to stay yet?" Nebula gave Ixa a look of concern, then brightened. "Oh! You should ask Lord Harmodius for one. That's right, last time you didn't get to see where I live-" Phaedra swatted away the memory of precisely why Ixa hadn't seen their chambers; that had been her first meeting with Jahara in this new life, when she had used Nebula as a hostage to allow her sister to speak. Nebula's brow furrowed for a moment, nearly imperceptible. "But you should come and have a look. We found some wonderful things in the city, and some men brought them back for us." "And we offered them to you, dear sister," Phaedra added, with a purr. "To you and to the hot blood of our Lord. I imagine they were the source of power; the others were rendered Mindless, incapable of offering true worth." They were completely useless for worship, pointless for real and meaningful sacrifice. All except Jatasura, of course. Prolixity The fur lifted on Ixa's spine. She suppressed a visible shudder. She knew quite well what that meant; the surge of pleasure and power that had filtered to her through Jahara had come from death. From sacrifice. You too are a killer, my dear, Jahara put in, irritated. She was tired of Ixa's squeamish behavior. Ruthlessly, she dug into Ixa's memories, drawing up flashes of animals and sentients who had died beneath the sphinx's claws and teeth. This one, she pointed out sweetly, died to a simple riddle. Recall the contempt you felt when he stuttered out his answer. Remember the wash of bloodlust and the scent of him. Meat, she reminded Ixa. When he failed your riddle, beautiful monster, he became meat, and you treated him as such. You and I, we are not so different. Look at yourself, beautiful monster. You cringe and shudder like a human child confronted with death for the first time, when you have so often brought death like a dark angel.Pride stung, Ixa sat up straighter, her hackles rising with irritation now rather than horror. I'm not like you, she snapped back. Are you not, then? Jahara asked, smooth and sweet-voiced. I only ask that you consider the contradiction in your own thoughts. You are what you were born to be, sphinx.Ixa lifted her chin haughtily, rubbing at the ache in her chest. Part of the pain was physical, tied to the gem. Part of it was mental. There was enough truth in Jahara's scathing words that they stuck in her heart and mind like a spiked seed. She refused to argue it aloud with her parasite in front of Nebula and Phaedra. Instead, she said to Nebula, "I will come and see." Surely the goddess in the golden jewel would offer her no threat, not when she carried Jahara's malevolent presence within her. And it would please Nebula. "You are so hospitable," Jahara added, twisting Ixa's lips into a smile. The sphinx's inner turmoil and thwarted anger were like sweet wine to a parched throat. Ixa was angry now at her; but she had learned her host's heart and mind. The patterns of Ixa's emotions would turn inwards soon enough, and sooner if Jahara helped them along. That furious loathing could be altered to focus on the sphinx herself, if Ixa was so determined to be disgusted.
Oh, it was so sweet.Sosiqui Nebula beamed. "Come on, then! I haven't gotten to show this to anyone... I think you'll like it, even though we don't have a minotaur yet." The Aoide reached out to tug lightly at Ixa's hair like a child, then giggled. "Your hair is really pretty... you know, I think this is the first time we've ever had to just talk..." She shifted, suddenly shy. "Well... anyway. Come on!" "Who should be welcome in my Labyrinth if not my sister and her host?" Phaedra prodded lightly at Nebula, and the Aoide nodded energetically in agreement. Prolixity Ixa blinked, briefly diverted from her uncomfortable reflections. "I suppose a labyrinth must have a guardian," she agreed warily. A minotaur, was it? A dangerous sort of beast. She wondered how Phaedra planned to control it, when she had - acquired - one. She blinked again when Nebula reached out to touch her hair. "I suppose it is," she answered slowly, and put a hand up to brush the curl back over her shoulder. It had been weeks since she had paid much attention to her appearance beyond basic grooming. A faint spark of her old vanity kindled, and she found herself missing her small collection of exotic jewelry. "You look exquisite," she said quietly to Nebula. That, at least, was true. In the gown and jewels, the catgirl was radiant. Yes. Envy her! What a good opportunity this had been, Jahara exulted silently. Nebula had entirely shaken Ixa's stubborn confidence and drive. Cracks had formed in the sphinx's mental armor, openings into which Jahara could ease herself and wear subtly away at her host's resistance.Sosiqui "I... I do?" Nebula paused, then blushed - not that anyone could tell, under her dark fur but still. "Thank you! You're so nice, Ixa! Come on!" The Aoide darted up the stairs and waited expectantly. "Gifts from our Lord," Phaedra put in. "Gifts for a future goddess, indeed. Fitting, are they not?" The words ended with a satisfied purr. Prolixity Ixa followed more slowly, recalling the unpleasant atmosphere of the last time she'd been here. She would be welcome here, if she so chose, while the jewel was in her. It would be nicer than the squalid little hotel room, whispered a traitorous thought. But that was too much like giving up. "Fitting indeed, for you and yours," Jahara smiled. "Glittering adornments fit for a queen." Word games indeed!Sosiqui "Here, here... here it is!" The door, bright and jeweled, seemed far closer to the stairway than it had been last time. Perhaps it was. Nebula paused in front of it and grinned at Ixa. "Isn't it beautiful? Lord Harmodius made this, just for us!" She put one hand on the door and let her fingers slide down the surface. "Phaedra calls it the Labyrinth." "A pale imitation of my ancient maze, you remember, sister... but it shall do, for now. Such a lovely place. So many empty shelves." The goddess' voice was rich with anticipation; the empty shelves did not bother her as much as one might think. Filling them would be such a treat. Prolixity "I remember." Jahara's voice held longing and anticipation. "It was glorious, and will be glorious again.""Beautiful," Ixa said, controlling herself tightly to keep the sharp edge out of her tone. The wash of Jahara's emotions, satisfaction and a faintly unclean pleasure and anticipation, had her on edge. Nebula, too, was beginning to disturb her. The catgirl was so sweetly, brightly happy. So simple. Still, though, Ixa couldn't bring herself to make the girl upset. If Nebula could find brightness in her lot, who was Ixa to tarnish that pleasure? Sosiqui Nebula opened the door, then turned around and looked at Ixa over her shoulder. The voice that emerged when she opened her mouth, however, belonged to the goddess. "A puzzle for you, sphinx - would you care to try your hand at solving my Labyrinth? It is a simple thing, now, but perhaps it would please you. There were sphinxes in my court of old, and they loved to get lost and wind their way back to me."Prolixity Ixa's fur rose again, but Phaedra had chosen her words well. An ancient drive and need woke within her - a puzzle for you - and she could not conceal the brightening of her eyes nor the little shiver of pleasure at the thought. A challenge. A puzzle. A riddle, posed to her. Even voiced by a goddess she trusted very little if at all, the temptation was irresistible and overcame her caution almost instantly. "It would please me," she answered, and winced slightly at the raw edge of hunger in her voice. Sosiqui Phaedra purred internally at the look in Ixa's eyes; she had not lost her touch. That is what you hunger for - a reminder of what you are, what you were. Your nature, yes... it matters not, but I can give you this.Nebula caught a bit of that, and one of her ears flicked. That's nice of you.She deserves a bit of fun, don't you think? The Aoide nodded, then turned to focus on Ixa herself. "Okay! I'll go through... there's a way to go straight to the heart from here. Once you hear a door close, then you can walk in. It's not very big, but it's kind of fun." "There are no traps, not yet. A bit simple for you, no doubt, but perhaps it will provide a bit of challenge."With that, Nebula disappeared through the door. A moment later, there was a click, a creak, and then a soft thud. Prolixity Ixa seated herself politely to wait for the door to close. Her whole being itched with the need to riddle, and she felt her mouth stretch into a true smile, for the first time in weeks. That there were no traps was a mild disappointment, but still, the maze would sharpen her mind and satisfy that deep and instinctive need in her. This was going to feel so good. Jahara lay quiet, watching with interest. Phaedra had found precisely the right trigger to drive the sphinx, and with such a delicate touch. Oh, my sister, she thought, practically purring with it. I have missed you so.Click. Thud. That would be the door closing again, resetting itself. Ixa rose and pulled it open, her ears up and her whole body trembling with anticipation. The small chamber that she padded into might have been claustrophobic for another being, but to her, it was like coming home. Dark rich wood paneling and the flickering light of torches and the scent of smoke and resin. The niches around the perimeter of the room stood empty; from what she could sense from Jahara and from her own knowledge, she guessed that they would someday display exotic treasures. Some of them would be trapped, then. Perhaps all of them would be. The door swung to behind her with a soft thud. She stood in the first room of the maze, and let herself sense and memorize what it was and how it was laid out. Three passages; how nicely traditional. There seemed to be a subtle pattern to the molding around the archways; Ixa didn't yet have enough data to read what it meant, if it meant anything. She chose the leftmost passageway, walking silently and carefully down the twisting path. Phaedra had told her there were no traps. The goddess might have been lying. Ixa remained on her guard. There was a kind of logic to the maze. At first, the paths Ixa chose were simply guesses, but as she moved, she began to learn its ways. It was not an insoluble or random puzzle; to offer her such a puzzle would have been a deliberate insult, and she had not expected it to turn out that way. She pieced together observations; here was the orientation of a room, the number of paths that led out of it; here the passages kinked and twisted in such and such a way; here a statue gleamed in a niche, one of its many stylized hands directing her along the opposite forking of the way. Instinct and logic guided her. Before long, her pace was quick and confident. There were no traps. Ixa laughed aloud with pleasure when the final turn of the final tunnel brought her quite abruptly to the door. She pushed it open, her face alight with the triumph of a successful solution. Clever, Jahara congratulated her, luxuriating in Ixa's pleasure. The sphinx's body and brain were generating chemicals that were almost intoxicating in their strength; her biology was clearly designed for exactly this. Jahara had not known that her host's addiction to puzzles was quite this literal. She stored that information away, too. It might be useful someday.

Nebula / Phaedra and Ixa / Jahara: Reunions, Part IISosiqui The room within was almost startling after the confines of the Labyrinth; its ceiling soared high above Ixa as she entered, and the dim glow of lava from the 'gardens' outside lent a strange warmth to the room. Nebula was seated on a pile of pillows; she jumped up, beaming, when the sphinx arrived. "Oh, well done - I knew you could do it! I got lost for hours when I first came here. A test, I think..." She shuffled the pile of pillows in half with her feet, moving some of them over for Ixa to use before plopping down again on her half. "I see the wisdom of the sphinxes has not failed since last I walked the worlds," Phaedra put in. "Well done, indeed... and welcome, my sister, to my inner sanctuary. I trust you will remember the way; it is open to you, always." To you, and my lord, only.Prolixity "A simple maze. But a good one," Ixa said, and smiled back at Nebula, still flushed with the euphoria of the puzzle. It had been far too long since she had solved such a challenge simply for the sheer pleasure of it. She had almost forgotten the thrumming glow of it. She couldn't feel true displeasure or resentment of anything just now, not after that. She accepted the cushions that Nebula pushed towards her and lay down among them, curling her tail tidily around her haunches. Phaedra's statement was flattery, certainly, she understood. But it was very neat flattery, and true, at any rate. "Thank you," she said, and was faintly surprised to find that she meant it. "Such a beautiful place," Jahara purred, looking through Ixa's eyes at the beauty and luxury of the chamber they sat in. "Comfortable and utterly elegant. Soon I shall have a home to welcome you to as well, my sister."Sosiqui I lied about the traps... they lie within your own mind, sphinx. So easy to twist, now. You have softened her well, sister. Phaedra kept the thoughts firmly to herself, but her pleasure was a warm glow in Nebula's mind. "Phaedra really is happy," the Aoide reassured Ixa, smiling. "Oh! Thank you," she added, to Jahara. "All these things," and she gestured at the furniture, and at the edge of boxes sticking out from under silk sheets, "were from Achai. From the city where Jatasura came from." The rakshasa was idling in a corner now, somehow. Odd - he hadn't gone through the door when Nebula had, but here he was, still. Perhaps he had ducked through the doorway after Ixa had entered the Labyrinth. He raised his head a bit at the sound of his name. Prolixity "It must be a rich place," Jahara said smoothly. She knew her sister; Phaedra would not have let anything remain in a place where anyone had stolen from her. But she would give the mindless little host a chance to tell the story, to entertain them both.Ixa glanced over at the blank-eyed rakshasha, a faint scowl pulling her mouth down again. How was he here? That, too, was a puzzle of its own. Of its own accord, her mind began to turn over possibilities. Sosiqui "It was," Phaedra sighed. "I would have taken the whole city for my own, but alas... we are not far enough ascended yet to hold it properly, and what would people think of a goddess that made a claim and could not keep it? Better to let them squabble over the leavings, for now. Their gains were ill-gotten, anyway." That last was solely for Ixa; Phaedra didn't care one whit how riches were obtained, nor one whit about 'ethics'... but it was good to appear 'good' whenever possible. It was so much easier to get trust that way. "Maybe we can go back to it later," Nebula added, fiddling with the tassel on one corner of the pillow nearest her hand. Prolixity "A wise decision." Jahara stirred in her jewel, reminded of her own limitations and disliking them. Soon. Soon. So soon. She chafed at the limitations of her reach and her power. To be embodied again - it was barely out of her reach, and that continued to rankle. "In time, perhaps."Ixa returned her attention to the conversation with a jolt, exerting a little of her willpower as she began to feel the familiar touch of the edge of the high fading. Would Phaedra allow Nebula to continue to exist long enough to return to the city she spoke of? In her heart, she suspected otherwise. But the goddess in the golden gem did seem to be treating Nebula with more kindness than she had previously. "What was it like there?" she asked Nebula, genuinely curious. Sosiqui "It was..." Nebula paused. "Huge. Bigger and busier than anything I've ever seen... full of lights and sounds... and people. So many people." "A flood of debauchery, truly; the belief there was that the world is ending, so why not wine and dine, whore and ******** until the end, bleeding all one's resources into pleasure?" Phaedra purred, slightly, just enough to make the Aoide's sides vibrate a tiny bit. "A fascinating place, truly, but the linchpin of it all was my stolen relic... and the abuses of a thousand thousand broken souls, of course. And we could not permit that."Prolixity "Celebrating the end of the world," Ixa said, a touch of dry disgust in her voice. "Fatalism, I suppose." She could envision the sharp-edged brilliance of desperation. The people there would have laughed too loudly, drunk too much, pursued what they believed to be their last days with the fervor of the condemned. There was a parallel there to her own fate that Ixa preferred not to think too hard about. She smiled sadly. Their end had come sooner than expected, perhaps. Nobody ever entirely believed their own deaths could come. She had seen it (Jahara chuckled low) enough times, the look of utter surprise in the eyes of the dying. Jahara suppressed the urge to laugh aloud at Phaedra's pretense of altruism. It was for the benefit of their hosts; if she laughed, she would spoil the illusion. "Of course not," she agreed.Sosiqui "Indeed... well, now they can wage their petty little wars over the crumbs, and see how much their defiance really meant. Not much, not in the face of our Lord's power. But they are fools. The world is not ending; it is changing." Phaedra's voice was low, sultry, quivering with eagerness. Nebula's sigh was almost startling in contrast. "I wish I'd seen what it looked like before. The garden of the Palace was so beautiful and so green..." Her expression was wistful. Prolixity "Change will come, whether they will it or not." Jahara's voice echoed that anticipation. "It has come. Those who deny it are deluding themselves."The volatile swing of Ixa's moods shifted again in response to the wistful tone in Nebula's voice. "I haven't seen much that is green lately," she answered, sighing herself. "That's a change that I wish had not occurred." Sosiqui "It is perhaps a touch excessive," Phaedra smirked. True, it would have been nice if her Emperor had left society a bit more intact (if only for her own convenience) and turned down the entropy just a smidgen, but... well. He was what He was. "Still, it will achieve the desired end. The gods are being reborn. That alone is momentous; why should that change not echo through every fiber of the fabric of the worlds? Let them dare ignore us now..."Phaedra forcibly reined herself in, then. The exultant thoughts of her Emperor, the presence of her sister... the games, they were all intoxicating. Dangerous to go too far, though, with the sphinx still thinking herself canny and clever. Hah.Nebula curled her tail up into her hands and fiddled with it, stroking her own fur absently. "Jatasura wanted to take all the minds of the hosts away with the relic he stole from us. Then we would all die, and the jewels... the gods... would be helpless..." She shivered, and held her tail tighter as if it were a stuffed toy or some other security object. "It was a terrible, horrible plan. I did not want to see you like that, Ixa." She gave the sphinx an anguished look. Prolixity "None can ignore what has come to pass. Let them pretend as they wish. The world is as it is." Jahara kept a tight control over the tone of her voice, injecting a soft curl of wistfulness rather than the heavy sly smugness that she actually felt. She wanted to stroke her gem, feel its warm contours under her fingers. Her own fingers, soon. Soon.
She noted the direction of Ixa's emotions, leaned gently on them. Wistful nostalgia could be urged into a kind of gentle resignation. It is as it is. It was inevitable, she whispered in caresses of chemical bittersweet. Everything withers.Ixa shifted slightly, her fur flattening against her spine and outlining her ribs. For a moment, she felt unease at Nebula's words - mindless, helpless, dead - but she couldn't hold the thought. She sighed and reached out to pat Nebula's hand. "You did what you felt was best, I know." Sosiqui Nebula frowned. That was a pithy answer, a non-answer. "I did what was right," she said, a bit sharply. Her tail fluffed a bit. "Calm yourself, kitten. We are no longer in Achai, where every word is a hidden dagger. We need not dance around words here, with friends." Phaedra smirked inwardly; a lie, that, but one her host needed to hear. The little kitten shouldn't get too cocky. Not at Ixa, at any rate. Perhaps at the Dragon King... ooh, that would be delicious- Nebula looked down. "Sorry," she mumbled. "You're right. Sorry, Ixa." Prolixity Ixa's tail flicked, and for a moment she felt a flare of answering irritation. But it melted again into melancholy as Nebula apologized. "Perhaps I should be apologizing. I didn't see it myself," she admitted. "I wouldn't wish to make such a decision myself." Not now, no. Jahara itched with impatience, bit back hasty words. She would very much have liked to accompany Phaedra, put her own hand to the cup, feel the surge of adrenaline and anticipation, and the power that came with it. She would not remind Ixa of her strength. Something was crumpling slowly within the sphinx, falling away slowly as she spent more time here, in Nebula's company and Phaedra's.
"Your zeal is admirable," she complimented Nebula, her voice soft and touched with sweetness. "We all know you did well."Sosiqui Slowly, Nebula's puffed tail-fur began to flatten again. "It's okay... no, it's fine," she said, then sat up straight. "I did do a good job! Thank you, Jahara." The Aoide beamed. The goddess had talked to her! Like equals, or nearly so! It really was working... Of course, my dear kitten. Phaedra slipped in her own words when her host was done speaking. "Still, I did hate to see it all come down like that, but it had to be done. Civilization is really the best place for someone like me..." The purr trembled at the back of Nebula's throat, low and rich with desire. Prolixity "We can survive among the ruins, certainly," Jahara chuckled. "But living, really living, now that is different."The overtones that came with that thought made Ixa draw back again, carefully blanking her expression. The goddess liked her luxuries, and not all of her luxuries, Ixa sensed were things that bore too close inspection. But she would upset Nebula again if she betrayed the little shiver of distaste that had gone through her. She held her silence, exhausted by the half-dissembling she was doing. So kind to the poor thing, Jahara murmured, and kept back her laughter. Sosiqui "Indeed - in the end, we will make this world a better place. We will bring order. Prosperity. A place to belong." Nebula's face took on a coy look for a moment, before shifting back to the Aoide's own bright naivete. "Yes! It'll be wonderful - a good place. Followers around us. We'll keep them safe! It will be good," she said, with an enthusiastic nod. "I want to share that place with you, Jahara! Ixa!" "Yes, don't you agree?" Phaedra focused on the sphinx. "Ixa?" Prolixity "I would love to see the world become a better place," Ixa replied, and shifted around so that her hair concealed the slow, uneasy ruffling of the fur on her back. Phaedra was pressing her, and Nebula wanted her to agree, and so she would choose her words carefully. "It would be a beautiful thing to see it while I still live." That barb was aimed at Jahara, the tone of her voice carefully controlled. Jahara chuckled. She considered taking the risk of lifting Ixa's hand to stroke her own implanted jewel; but such a careless motion might sap her energy too much and rouse Ixa's ire enough to encourage the sphinx to block her out. While she didn't think that Ixa knew what she had done by allowing Jahara through her careful defenses, she had no desire to betray herself that much quite yet. "Our temples will be places of safety, first," she said aloud, smoothly. "In time, the world will follow."Sosiqui Nebula nodded enthusiastically. "After all, there's nothing wrong with wanting things. Everyone wants things! When we are gods, we can give them what they want! I hope it happens soon." The Aoide turned to glance out the window. "Then we'll have to find temples... hmm..." "And poison in small doses can be medicine. Curse and cure both. Doubtless, Jahara, you have granted your host some freedom from the poisons within her own body..." That was a risk, but so was Nebula being so incredibly insipid as Phaedra kept her host's thoughts carefully corralled. Jahara must have Ixa under a strong hand already, to have the sphinx not notice. "What that power could do for the world..."Another sally, another advance in their little game. There was no point to their conversation now but play, and Phaedra tipped her host's lips up into a smile. What fun they would have once they could fully overmaster their hosts! The game was enjoyable, but to smile and sup and make delicate words with someone who knew exactly what you were, and when the reverse was also true... that was even better. Prolixity "That I have. It is a simple thing to cleanse away the burn of fatigue, or to keep the stomach settled. A small thing, but to start small is best, perhaps. I would not overreach myself." Jahara smiled, also, and pressed very gently on the edges of Ixa's mind, reminding the sphinx how good it felt to be freed of the little aches of exertion; she bled away some of the built-up toxins of tension in Ixa's shoulders. A small risk, certainly. But one she could afford to take. She left the uncertain acidic turmoil in Ixa's gut as it was. If she eased that nervous pain, it would likely alert the anxious sphinx to the quiet manipulation Jahara had been doing."There are things that everyone wants," Ixa agreed quietly as the tense ache in her back relaxed slightly. It did feel good. Jahara had been wildly cruel to her at the beginning, certainly; but with Ixa's stubborn resistance, the goddess had gentled her torment, spoken to her with more respect. That was true. Maybe, just maybe ... Sosiqui Nebula yawned, stretched, then scooted to nestle herself next to the sphinx, reaching to wrap both her arms around Ixa's nearest foreleg. "I'm so happy I met you. I wouldn't have met you if it hadn't been for Phaedra..." The goddess merrily pushed the memories of pain and fear along before they had a chance to ooze into Nebula's content delirium. "I'm glad even the goddesses are friends. So glad..." She rubbed her cheek lightly against Ixa's shoulder, not thinking anything of the motion, just happy and sleepy and comfortable. A kitten to nestle and nuzzle. Tian Yue had never liked her cuddles, and she certainly didn't want to cuddle with Jatasura, and Ixa was so warm... Phaedra giggled inwardly. Prolixity Ixa was startled into stillness for long moments. Then she hesitantly put her other hand up to pet Nebula's hair. Such a child. Such a kitten. Poor thing. The aiode's sleepy gesture reminded her of when her own daughter had been young, before the powerful flooding of maternal hormones had ebbed and allowed her to let her newly-fledged child leave the den. Niobe wouldn't know what had happened to her mother, nor would she likely ever give it more than a stray thought here and there. That was the way of it. "Shhh," Ixa whispered, her eyes softening with the echo of feelings she had thought dead in her. Delighted, Jahara encouraged the emotion, letting her presence sink back somewhat, away from Ixa's awareness. It was an excellent distraction and a fine way to continue the sphinx's attachment to Phaedra's host.Sosiqui Nebula purred and leaned on Ixa, then yawned again. "You should stay here," she said, drowsily. "Build a temple next to mine... so pretty..." Her eyelids drifted closed, covering red eye and golden gem both. A moment later her mouth stirred, though the rest of her body gave every sign of being asleep. "She is so tired, poor thing, and it is not in my arts to take away her fatigue."Prolixity "It will be very pretty," Ixa said, softly, soothingly. She sighed. "Let her sleep," she said to Phaedra. "She seems so young." Her hand continued to move in slow, soothing strokes over Nebula's hair. Sosiqui "Why, she is... and yet not. She holds an ancient soul inside her." So delicious; aged perfectly. "She was done a great injustice and she does not remember it. Her existence was torment. What I have given her is freedom. How long has she longed for just such a moment as this, one touch from a gentle hand, and not received it? Long, long, very very long indeed..." Nebula's body did not move, and other than the extra required to fuel Phaedra's speech, her breathing remained slow and even. Prolixity "Poor thing." Ixa watched Nebula sleeping, allowing herself to slip into comfortably melancholy thoughts. To live so long, and yearn for comfort, and not receive it ... maybe it was a kinder fate, after all. She had seen the desperate worship in Nebula's eyes; it had been wiped away, now, replaced by a childlike delight in her new station. Perhaps. Perhaps it was not so terrible. She remained still, letting Nebula sleep against her shoulder. That Phaedra, too, occupied the body that leaned against her was of secondary consequence for the moment. Jahara stayed quiet, letting Ixa jump to her own conclusions. Good. Let her host turn her thoughts in that direction; it would make it easier to weaken her yet more. Turning Ixa against herself had been a slow and patient process; but the longer it went on, the easier it became.
