A Touch of Swordplay

Sosiqui
Crispin woke up that morning feeling refreshed, and in a better mood than he'd been in for some time. He hummed a bit to himself as he went about the morning routine, getting dressed and eating the toast and jam that Toki brought, pondering what he could do today instead of sitting around and moping.

It seems you took our conversation to heart, Shaiming observed, amused.

"Mmhm... and I think, maybe... I have an idea..."

A few minutes later, Crispin knocked on Morgan's door.

mistalina13
Morgan had been stretched on the bed, listening to music again, with the headphones off, but the volume cranked. Hearing the knock on the door she sat up and hit the stop button on her mp3 player. "Who is it?"

Sosiqui
"'Tis I, your noble knight errant," Crispin proclaimed, opening the door just a sliver. "May I enter your chambers, fair lady?"

Shaiming settled back and observed, amused.

mistalina13
Morgan smiled. "Of course Crispin, come on in. How are you this morning?" She scooted over on the bed, to give him room to sit down if he wished.

Sosiqui
"Mmm... I was wondering... if you'd be interested in doing something with me and Shaiming?" Crispin grinned. "Something different."

mistalina13
"Sure!" Morgan giggled. "What'd you have in mind?"

Sosiqui
"We thought, perhaps, that you might want to learn something," Shaiming said.

Crispin nodded. "Something we could do together... and something that any roleplayer probably wants to learn." He ducked out into the hall and came back in with his old practice sword in one hand. "Want to give it a try?" He grinned.

mistalina13
"Really...you two would teach me!?" Morgan was ecstatic, it'd be fun even if it was hard work to learn. Besides, she would have two wonderful teachers.

Sosiqui
"Well, I'd try... more like you'd whack at me, I guess. At least you'd have an actual opponent, I didn't when Shaiming taught me! He's a better teacher," Crispin added, a little sheepish - but he was still proud of how well he'd done. The training had made him fit, too.

"This room is a bit too small to be used as a salle, though. Let's move to my quarters and move the chairs aside... and, Crispin, there should be another blunt blade somewhere in that hoard of mine."

mistalina13
Morgan's mood had definately brightened. She got up from the bed and walked to Crispin's side. "Thank you, to you both." She said softly, then leaned over to give him a little kiss.

Sosiqui
"No problem," Crispin said, returning the kiss, lightly. "There's no reason why we have to be all gloom and doom, anyway. If we're going to change things, it has to start - here!" He grinned and took her hand.

A shout for Toki, and some rummaging around by the Aoide, produced a second blunt sword. Once the furniture had been moved to clear a wide space, Crispin took the sword Toki had found and gave Morgan the one he had trained with. "Any words, o wise master?"

"Be careful," Shaiming said, sounding serious. "I do not have any training blades, and I fear if I sent Toki to find some that he'd not come back for days. The weapons you bear are blunted, but they are true steel and they will hurt if you miss... no, I mislike this. I want some protection on you both."

Crispin's brow furrowed. "But I don't have any armor..."

"We will take cloth, and bind the blades, and heavy clothing on your arms and legs with more cloth," the dragon said, decisively.

So Toki was sent, and the Aoide returned with his scrap bag and twine. Crispin sat down and picked through the cloth, trying to wrap his sword. "Like this?"

mistalina13
Morgan smiled and followed along back to Shaiming's rooms, helped to move the furniture and all that. But the feeling of the sword in her hands was definitely different than she expected, heavier for one.

She was studying the blade, admiring the artistry of it until Shaiming's words caught her attention. Yeah this thing would hurt.

She worked away at carefully wrapping the blade, glancing at Crispin's to see if she was doing it correctly.

Sosiqui
"That knot a bit tighter, there - good, Morgan," Shaiming said, lightly prodding Crispin to look at this and that on his behalf.

"Maybe it'd be easier to just get long sticks," Crispin sighed as he finished binding his sword's blade and picked up some of the other cloth. "I think I'm going to need help with the other stuff... what should I pad?"

"Everything... and no, long sticks would be foolish. There would be learning, yes, but the weight would be wrong. Someone trained on a stick would be useless if handed a real sword."

Toki flitted about, pleased to have a job to do, and helped bundle cloth into makeshift padding that could be easily strapped on.

Crispin made a face at it. "Okay... I think we're gonna have to help each other with this, Morgan. We're going to look like marshmallow people when this is done... patchwork marshmallow people!"

mistalina13
Morgan listened carefully to Shaiming as he spoke. She knew a little about the mechanics of swordfighting, years of going to renaissance faires and watching mock duels and all of that. Though she guessed this little lesson would be far more educational.

She giggled and grinned. "Alright...and it seems so."

Sosiqui
Crispin helped Morgan with her 'armor' as best she could, while Shaiming issued commands and criticism. "No, tighter there... don't impede the joint, you have to be able to bend! .... Are you trying to cut off her circulation, Crispin?"

Finally it was okay - he hoped. "How's that feel? It's not too tight, is it?" The 'armor' was tied on to protect the arms and the legs, with another strip around the torso. "What about the face...?"

"We're not going to do anything near the head," Shaiming said. "This is for fun, and the protection is to make sure it stays fun."

mistalina13
Morgan moved and bent to test her range of motion. "I'm alright." She straightened out and pushed her glasses up her nose. "M'kay...my turn to help you then?" She smiled, rocking back and forth from her heels to the balls of her feet a bit.

Sosiqui
"Yep... same as you, I guess. Shaiming will help you if you need it." Crispin stood up and started pulling on the fabric 'armor', doing what he could for himself before turning to Morgan for the rest.

mistalina13
Morgan did the best she could to help him, it was a good thing she had been paying attention while he helped her otherwise she would've been pretty well clueless. "Am I doing this right, Shaiming?"

Sosiqui
"I believe so, though I cannot see beyond Crispin's own field of vision..." Crispin moved a bit as the dragon tested the feel of the 'armor'. "It feels fine," Shaiming confirmed, after a moment. "Just a bit tighter on the right forearm."

Crispin waited patiently. The 'armor' felt silly, looked sillier, and the swords were ludicrous in their swathed state - but it was much better than hurting each other badly.

mistalina13
"Mkay." Morgan adjusted the ties on the right forearm piece. "That better?" She smiled a little.

Sosiqui
Crispin shifted again, this time under his own power. "Feels okay. Shaiming?"

"Well done... now. To the swords, my students!" The dragon's voice was jovial again, and Crispin smiled - this was what they'd been missing, the past few days. He picked up his own cloth-wrapped sword.

"Now... Morgan, first, the stance. Show me how you feel you ought to hold the blade. Come stand before us so I can see best, without knocking poor Crispin over with strain."

mistalina13
Morgan reached down and picked up her own sword, thinking as she walked opposite Crispin and faced him. She took a deep breath, trying to relax and remember what she DID know about this.

After a moment she took a position that seemed logical if nothing else. Some stance similar to what seen in a duel at the renaissance faire, sword in the right hand, gripped firmly but carefully, turned a bit to the side weight resting mostly on her back foot.

She silently hoped it was right, or at least that Crispin and Shaiming wouldn't think her a total idiot.

Sosiqui
"That looks okay-ish to me....?" Crispin shrugged. "Shaiming?"

"Hmmmm..." The dragon rumbled. "A passable start. Now, move, thusly." Crispin shifted stance and brought his own sword down in a few simple arcs, as if against an invisible opponent. "Repeat."

"You didn't have to do that, I can do those moves on my own, y'know," Crispin grumbled, though he was smiling.

mistalina13
Morgan giggled and smiled before concentrating and then did her best to repeat what she saw, managing to do so without too many large foul-ups. Mostly she was just trying to get used to the feeling of the sword, it's weight and balance.

Sosiqui
"Good," Shaiming said, approvingly. "Now, let us try it against an opponent - those same movements, Morgan, but this time Crispin will try and parry your blows."

"Can I do it myself this time?"

"Yes, yes, you can do it yourself," the dragon sighed. "But only if you hurry up, boy!"

Crispin rolled his eyes, but cheerfully stepped forward. "Avast, ye scurvy dog," he proclaimed, and brought his own padded blade into a guard position.

mistalina13
Morgan nodded, biting her lip trying not to laugh; thankfully she managed to stifle the urge after a moment and returned to the position she had started in, repeating the movements she'd done before.

As Crispin parried them she hoped she had managed to do them correctly.

Sosiqui
"Well done, Morgan," Shaiming praised. "Your form is good, for a beginner; it will improve as you get used to the weight of the blade."

"What about me?" Crispin asked, with a grin.

"If you had missed any of those, you would feel my wrath," the dragon said with a mock growl.

"Fine, fine - now what?"

"Let me see... now, let us have Morgan parry. Crispin, will you slowly repeat the first movement? Morgan, you saw what Crispin did. Try and mimic him to block his blow; he will go slowly, to give you a chance to adjust."

Crispin nodded, waited for Morgan to be ready, and moved at about half speed.

mistalina13
Morgan nodded. Her turn to block now. She managed a little smile, to hide the small amount of nervousness that caught up with her. It was just the same as if she had been showing off a piece or doing something for any other teacher and she managed to fight that back.

But with blocking Crispin's blows she didn't do quite so well at first. The first was poorly blocked, the second better and the rest hopefully getting progressively better as she adjusted.

Sosiqui
"Good, good!" Shaiming was pleased. "Now, let's try it faster, shall we?"

Crispin nodded, waited once more for Morgan to prepare, and then did the sequence again, this time at full speed - though he still kept it gentle, in case she fumbled a parry completely. He didn't want to hurt her.

mistalina13
Morgan was glad she had managed to get it right, at least by the end. She readied herself to parry again, and doing better now that she knew a bit better what she was actually supposed to do.

Sosiqui
"Good, good..." Shaiming said - and then, at the very end, Crispin suddenly found himself shoved aside as the dragon took control and changed tactics, attacking Morgan in a different way - not too fast to parry, but different from the rhythm Crispin had been keeping.

mistalina13
That was something Morgan hadn't expected, there was something different about it, she had a feeling.

"Shaiming?"

It was asked as she did her best to parry, though not doing as well as she had against Crispin and nearly loosing her balance toward the end.

Idiot, you should've been paying more attention. She chastised herself silently.

Sosiqui
Crispin reached out and grabbed Morgan's arm, to keep her from falling off-balance completely. "Are you okay? Shaiming, that was kind of a dirty trick!"

"Not at all - there was no harm done, was there, Morgan?" The dragon was amused. "Proper swordfighting is not rote movement, and if you learn it as such, it will be useless in true combat. That was well done."

mistalina13
Morgan let out a little squeak of suprise when she was caught, having expected to fall on her behind instead.

"Thanks..." She smiled, her expression nervous for a moment before it relaxed and she nodded. "I'm alright, no harm done." The Dragon had a point, even though hoped to never find herself in real combat.

Sosiqui
"Good... now, let us try combining the arm movement with the leg movement..."

Crispin demonstrated first, sometimes on his own, sometimes with the dragon's 'help', so Morgan could follow suit.

mistalina13
So they spent a morning together in fun, learning and laughter. Just like the days past. Though Morgan was grateful when Shaiming finally said it was enough for the day. She was a bit sore, this wasn't a sort of activity she was used to, like Crispin was; though she knew it had been a good exercise.

"I took dance as a little girl, you think my balance would better than it is." She laughed at herself, for all the times she'd nearly fallen.

Sosiqui
"Not so; it is a different sort of movement, and in dance you're not carrying a large weight... usually," Shaiming observed. The dragon was pleased. Not much actual progress had been made in terms of skill, but the time had certainly not been wasted by any means. "Well done, Morgan. Perhaps in future we will be able to locate a blade for you, for your liking - or, if the sword is not your favored weapon, some other type. It is well to have protection in these darker days."

Crispin was flopped on the couch, his sweaty face belying the dragon's calm tones. "Phew... he worked you hard. No mercy!"

mistalina13
Morgan leaned against the side of the couch Crispin had fallen onto and looked back at him, smiling. "Thanks, both of you, it was fun." She did her best to stretch out her sore muscles, then went and settled herself on the floor in front of the couch.

Sosiqui
"You are most welcome," Shaiming said, then raised his voice. "Toki!"

The Aoide appeared almost immediately. "My lord?" He looked questioningly at Crispin.

"Cold water, please, and some light sustenance - nothing too heavy. Perhaps fruit, if you've not depleted Lady Kishara's gardens."

"Mmm..."

Toki bowed. "Of course." He skipped out of the room towards the main hallway, obviously heading to said gardens.

"Do you think he's really pillaging it to pieces?" Crispin made a face.

mistalina13
"I'd hope not..." Morgan sighed, settling back against the couch, reaching up a hand to take one of Crispin's and closing her eyes. She just let herself relax for the time being.

Sosiqui
Crispin fiddled with Morgan's fingers, feeling content. The dragon had been right - this was much better. "In this room, with you... I don't think there's any kind of god that could do anything to destroy this now that I've found it again," he said, happily.

Shaiming snorted, but it was the affectionate sort.

mistalina13
Morgan turned to face him again and leaned over the couch to give give him a little kiss. "That's good darling." She smiled, then gave his hair a little playful ruffle with her free hand.

Sosiqui
"Oy, my hair is bad enough as it is without you... improving it," Crispin teased. "So what do you think of swordfighting, fair lady?"

mistalina13
Morgan giggled. "Sorry...couldn't resist." She shifted a little, so she wasn't sitting on her feet. "It's fun to learn, though I don't know how practical it would be for me."

Sosiqui
"Well, we can keep at it... or maybe try some other stuff, I don't know what Shaiming has in that hoard of his... but it's not any more precious than you," Crispin grinned. "Am I too sappy?"

mistalina13
"I don't think so." Morgan beamed, then leaned over again to give him another little kiss. "I think you're sweet."

Cat Cat Kitty Cat

There was a mouse scurrying somewhere, in the walls. Shaiming, as he sat at the desk and worked through yet another book while Crispin snoozed, had the absurd need to flick an ear at the sound of the desperate little creature. But, alas, his host lacked the ability.

So the dragon sat, and read, and thought about flicking, and wished he could shift easily into the dragon form that was his true nature. The dual forms were long a gift of the Kings of Dragons, and Shaiming mentally thought of himself in dragon shape, not wearing a humanoid face. The little things about Crispin's body - the lack of a tail, the absence of scales - were beginning to grate on him, in a small way.

What will Morgan think when Crispin's form first walks into her room, trimmed and touched with scales and echoes of the dragonshape? Will she weep?

One ear flicked - no, no it didn't, it only wanted to - as soft footfalls approached, and Shaiming turned to see Nebula hovering in the doorway, her tail twined around her ankles. She was wearing that ridiculous outfit with the lace and the petticoats, which she'd seen in a book and was convinced would attract Crispin's attention. The dragon sighed.

"Those skirts do not suit you, Aoide."

She bowed her head, and her tail lashed once, hard enough to send the bow she'd tied to it flying into a wall, where it slithered down to rest unwanted on the floor. "I was hoping it was Crispin, my lord."

Shaiming raised one eyebrow. "Such a difference between the two of you. Toki's heart breaks a little more every time Crispin's gaze meets his hopeful eyes."

Nebula bit her lip, and Shaiming thought he saw a small trickle of blood. "I..."

"Your jealousy is most unbecoming..." She stiffened, and Shaiming knew he'd hit the mark, straight and true. The bow, I must remember to teach him the bow. "I am no fool, kitten. Crispin may be blind as a bat in that respect, but do not presume the same of myself."

"I only want to do my duty!" Nebula mumbled, folding her arms; some crisp fabric crushed under her movement with a soft sound. "But he- that girl-"

"-Is my host's lover, which is something you were never called to be," Shaiming said, sharply, and Nebula flinched. "There are many kinds of service - why will you not settle into some other manner of usefulness, one for which we actually have a need?"

"I... I..." Nebula's fists clenched, and this time Shaiming was certain he saw a few drops of blood trickle as her claws pierced her palms, so forceful was the gesture. "Because you never would," she hissed, then whirled and was gone before Shaiming could stand.

The dragon settled back heavily in the chair. "Because I..." His brow furrowed.

Shaiming?

Blast, she'd woken his host. I am sorry, Crispin - there were a few things I needed to do, and felt that you could rest while I did them, The dragon sighed. Are you angry?

No...

Good. Shaiming stood, unsteady. I will bring us back to bed; no need to stir yourself.

Nebula...?

Is jealous, for some reason. Shaiming's brow furrowed again, this time with confusion. What on earth did she mean? He did not remember her one whit from his past. There had been no such Aoide in his service previously - of that, he was absolutely sure. Why... no, I am sorry, Crispin. Try not to let her bother you, though it might be best to send her on errands or occupy her in other ways while Morgan is about, from now on.

Um. Okay. Crispin sounded just as confused, and tired to boot. This made no sense to him, and Shaiming didn't have the benefit of the boy's veneer of dream. Can we go back to sleep now?

Yes. Shaiming lifted the covers and let the body fall into bed, eyes closing as he did so-

Glasses, Crispin mumbled.

What?

Take 'em off, don't wanna... bend 'em...

Shaiming sighed, but carefully took off the glasses and put them with care on the bedside table. Only then did his host allow the soft blanket of sleep to fall over them both.

Straight and True

Sweat trickled down the side of Crispin's face. His head ached, there were welts along his left forearm, and his right fingers were red and stinging.

And, despite all this, he was happy.

Draw once more, Crispin - see, you'll have it soon. Ah, when I was at my height the arrows flew like shooting stars, and carried the sky's fire on their heads! Shaiming exulted.

Crispin had woken up that morning to find Toki bouncing eagerly around the front room, the Aoide beaming at him. "Master Crispin, Lord Shaiming! I've found what you wanted me to find, Lord Shaiming!"

"Have you? Good!" Shaiming's voice had been rich with approval, and Crispin felt the surge of pleasure as the dragon regarded the long bundles in the Aoide's arms - one flat, one rounded.

Crispin had moved forward and taken the bundles, then unwrapped the linen at Shaiming's enthusiastic urging, only to find a rugged old bow and a quiver with training arrows. Rolled up with the bow was a practice target marking to be hung on a wall or haybale, faded and pockmarked from long use.

"They are old, my Lord, but they will serve for training?" Toki had asked, anxious for approval as always.

"They will serve admirably." Shaiming's answer, deep with satisfaction, had made the Aoide shiver with joy.

This bow, Shaiming had explained as Crispin fiddled with his new 'toys' and Toki hung the target cloth on his old stuffed ragbag, is what they call a 'shortbow' or 'flatbow'. Less stately than the noble longbows, but when one is a god, one does not need to rely on physical powers only for a long range. And the smaller bows are much easier to carry around, really.

And with that, they had begun work.

After the first five times of Crispin snapping the bowstring into his own forearm, prompting swearing and throwing of the bow across the room, Shaiming had ordered a wrapping placed around the injured area. Now the bowstring only scraped against cloth, sometimes, but underneath the weals still stung. Crispin's fingers were rubbed red, moving towards raw, from drawing the bow over and over, and his shoulders ached powerfully.

But, as he drew again and watched the arrow sing into the target (not the center, but he at least hit it - the wall was pocked with holes that would make Toki wail and tear his clothes) and there was a surge of delight from his draconic teacher, Crispin wouldn't have traded any welt or pain for all the world.

Well done, Shaiming proclaimed. Perhaps we should teach this to Morgan as well.

"Not until I suck less!" Crispin panted, grinning and brushing his hair back from his sweaty forehead. "Otherwise I'll look like a fool."

She would not cease to love you, for all that, the dragon said, amused.

"I know, but - I'd feel better about it, okay?" Crispin shook his head with a smile, then picked up another arrow and nocked it. His hands shook a bit from exhaustion as he drew the bowstring taut. For a moment, the arrow's shaft clattered dangerously against the wood of the bow.

You'll lose it! Loose! Shaiming ordered, and Crispin released the bowstring with the twang that had become deeply familiar. The arrow flew across the room and embedded itself an inch into the wall.

"... Toki will hate me," he groaned.

He will not. He will bemoan the damage for a while, possibly cry a bit and tear at his garments, and then be happy as a clam as he seeks out craftsmen and paints to fix it. You know he's never so pleased as when he has a job to do, because approval comes at the end.

Crispin shook his head. "It's a weird way to be."

He was not always so, but even still I would not lose his loyalty, eccentric though it may have become, for all the treasures in the world.

"Absolutely not," Crispin said, firmly, and picked up another arrow. Notch, draw, aim, loose-

The arrow sang straight and true into the middle of the target.

"Hey! Heeeey! Did you see that?! Did you see it, Shaiming!" Crispin beamed and put the bow down, scurrying over to the target to examine his prize.

I told you the odds would fall in your favor, sooner or later.

Crispin made a face. "Odds, nothing. That was raw skill!"

Indeed. You will be casting the stars out along their heavenly paths any day now. The dragon's tone was sly and sardonic.

"Yeah, well - shut up."

Bring Me Home - I

A roll of the dice...

Crispin was idly fiddling with the dice Morgan had gave him, rolling the d20 around in one hand as he read the book on the desk before him - but he wasn't really paying attention. More than once he found himself at the end of a page with no recollection of how he got there, or remembrance of the words his eyes had allegedly seen. "Mmmm..."

Without warning, the fingers on his left hand went limp, and the dice spilled out of his hand to clatter along the floor before hitting the edge of the rug and stopping. A wave of dizziness overcame him, and his vision blurred. "What... huh...?" he mumbled, swaying in his chair.

Crispin. Oh, my love. Shaiming's voice echoed through his brain, chasing away all thought and reason before it - but the dragon's words were tinged with sadness. It is time... time for us.

"T-time...?" Crispin became aware that Toki was standing there with a serious expression on his face, the Aoide helping him to stand up and stagger into the other room, weak-kneed like one drunk. Crispin tumbled ungracefully into the bed, and had a brief moment to see Toki bow quickly and leave. He tried to reach out to the Aoide, tried to speak, failed-

-And, between one blink of his eyes and the next, found himself enmeshed in the dreamspace. Shaiming floated before him, great and glorious, looking larger than he ever had before, and all the odd distortion and dizziness was gone... replaced with sudden understanding.

Crispin smiled, softly, and moved to place one hand on the dragon's scales. "Time."

"I will miss you - oh, how I will miss you," Shaiming said, bending his muzzle down to nuzzle lovingly at his host. Crispin returned by wrapping his arms around the dragon's neck as best he could and squeezing, tight, feeling the tears come to his eyes.

So this was it. No more Shaiming, no more Toki, no more Gaia. No more Morgan, and that was another sharp pang. "Take care of her, Shaiming. Please?"

"She will want for nothing," Shaiming promised, then moved and took Crispin up in his coils.

Crispin felt himself go limp, unable to move even a finger as Shaiming tightened his coils around his body, more like a boa constrictor than a dragon - but there was no fear, no pain, only the soft slide of scales against his skin and a sense of gentle pressure. His vision swam as he looked up at the dragon.

Shaiming ducked his head down, and took a breath. Crispin felt the motion all around him, rippling through the dragon's body. "Yes... I will miss you... but you will go on. You will shine, Crispin." And a radiant smile lit up his face, a smile of joy, and of deep relief.

"Wh... what...? I... I d-don't underst-stand..." The words came haltingly, and with great effort.

"I am old - old beyond reckonings of mortals... as are most gods, true, but I have felt the weight of time and the changes of the worlds and mortals in my very bones." Crispin was transfixed by the dragon, mesmerized by his every movement as he spoke. "What the Pantheon needs is not this grizzled old dragon, set in his ways and uncomprehending of anything outside of his tomes - but a Tien Lung that will lead them to the stars, protecting them with fresh strength."

"I... I d-don't..." It was nearly impossible that time, and Shaiming smiled with a look of almost fatherly love.

"These past months - nearly a year now, did you know that? - I had been thinking very hard... and I began teaching you, just in case my mad idea was possible... and it is. It is possible, my beloved." Crispin felt a drop of water hit his face, and realized that the dragon was crying, though from sorrow or joy he could not tell. "From that time, I hoped - and now I know it is true. You are the heir I thought you could be, the protege I trained, the successor I need so desperately."

"Suc...success...?" Crispin stammered.

"Quiet, beloved... I will be gone, yes, but also not gone. Within you will live my courage, my wisdom, my skill, aspects of my self... and, most importantly, my power and my divinity. But I will ask you - will you wield this blade for me, Crispin? I would not force upon you anything you did not truly wish."

And, in a blink, the sword appeared in front of Crispin - the same one Destruction had given to Shaiming, the one he hadn't touched since, with its blade of amethyst crystal and jade basket hilt.

He swallowed, hard. "I... you want me to... to..." It was not something he could understand - all the words made sense, yes, but it was not something understandable by any stretch of the imagination. "I... you trust me...?"

"Implicitly." Shaiming smiled. "I have made you a mortal worthy of saving this world - will you take up the sword, share in my magic in truth as Lord Harmodius said on our first meeting... and become the god who will save it?"

Crispin stared at the sword, and then tilted his head up at Shaiming.

Slowly, a soft smile spread across his face. It was trembling with fear, but it was a smile nevertheless. "I love you, Shaiming," he said, simply, able to get those words out without stammering - and with a titanic effort that seemed nearly worthy of the gods all on its own, reached out and grasped the hilt of the sword in one hand.

It vanished in a puff of light, and Shaiming roared, the sound prideful, echoing to the heavens. Above them, the stars brightened, resonated, shook with the sound.

"Hear what I say!" Shaiming shouted to the skies. "I, Shaiming, Tien Lung, Dragon King of the Twin Crown, Starscale Consort and Worldshield - I make my last command, and it is this: to cede my power, my will, and my essence unto this mortal soul... mortal no longer!"

And, with a powerful rushing sound like a million birds taking off at once, Shaiming's scales tore away from his body, hovering for a moment in the sky, reflecting the starlight - before turning and plunging down onto Crispin's shocked form, coating him head to toe-

Bring Me Home - II

-And Crispin screamed. But the scales, terrifying as they may have seemed to him at any other time, were not the reason, even as they landed on him like a thousand moths, tickling every inch of his skin.

But that seemed like nothing compared to the sudden flood in his mind - a rush of facts, sensation, skill, emotion, and knowledge... a sure and terrifying knowledge of just how huge the universe was, of how many stars there were in the sky, of significance and insignificance, of vast spaces incomprehensible to mortals. It was insane, it was uncontrollable, and to Crispin's human mind, it was terrifying and beyond comprehension in a way he could express in no other way but a faceless scream. The scales crawled in and coated his tongue.

And then Shaiming was behind him, the dragon's warm breath tickling in his ears, past the scales, radiating calm. "Shh, softly, beloved - listen to me. This is knowledge you will need; it is part of my essence... listen, shh. Listen." The dragon's voice was almost hypnotic, and Crispin latched onto it, the only port in a wild storm, as the knowledge poured wildly past him. He felt as though his mind were going to explode.

And then, suddenly, there was a release - as if what he had been so uselessly struggling to contain the flood in had simply failed, and burst... but there was no end of consciousness, no pain, no death. Merely a slow, overflowing understanding, a comprehension of the incomprehensible, and the fear melted away as he regarded the precise number of meteors in the skies with impunity.

Shaiming chuckled. "Good, there. That understanding is the first part of divinity, that ability - good, good. Oh, Crispin."

The dragon's voice was changing, and Crispin felt dizzy - but this time, it wasn't from the strange outpouring of knowledge. Slowly, slowly, new sensations swelled up within him. Shaiming radiated bravery, and courage, and without thinking he filed those away, making them part of him. There were emotions, too, and a flowing river of memories that Crispin was somehow able to encompass as the dragon guided them home. "Oh, Crispin; oh, my beloved," he kept whispering, in a tone of deep joy and gratitude.

Crispin had no idea how much time had passed; there was no meaning to the word on the concept, not here, not now. Only Shaiming, and the sharing, and the closeness. He ceased to be aware of the scales covering him; there was only the dragon. Crispin drifted in a reverie as Shaiming moved in and out of their shared consciousness, moving things about to his satisfaction.

And then, suddenly, Shaiming was floating before him again - and somehow, his scales were back on him, though Crispin could feel them still coating his own skin. Now there was no mistake - the dragon was unmistakably weeping openly.

"It is done - very nearly done. Only my Self remains, and the full power of my divinity. This is my choice, Crispin - no, no." Shaiming smiled. "Very shortly you will be a new creature - still, personality-wise, mostly Crispin, but you will be Tien Lung. I... I had thought of a name," the dragon said, suddenly shy.

"Wh... what?" Crispin managed to get the words out thickly, past the scales.

"Though we are Dragon, I thought the name 'Tian Yue' to be fitting - it means 'Celestial Phoenix'. I mean the word in the sense of rebirth. Tien Lung is here reborn - the office is yours... the power... I am so tired... and oh, how I love you. My Crispin. No. My Tian Yue...

The dragon smiled once more, and then dissolved, bursting into stardust that flowed over the scales - for a moment the world was dazzling, bright, dizzying, and there was nothing but love, and a deep, deep gratitude...

... And then...

Bring Me Home - III

And then there was wakefulness, sudden and sharp, a bed bathed in sweat, and a grinding pain - he screamed again and arched his back as his spine stretched out, skin resisting for a moment before tumbling down to follow the new bone growth, small bright scales trickling down and gathering along its length and adhering in pockets along his feet and calves. The tail convulsed as it finished its growth, and then - nothing.

The new god curled firmly into a fetal position, looking for that moment very vulnerable, very human save for the tail. There was another tingling around his neck as the dragon mark faded into the skin, and a quick spike of ice-cold pain as the jewel resettled itself deeper into his back, with only a bit of its bright surface protruding.

And then... nothing.

"My... my lord...?" came a quavering voice, and he blinked. Who...? Oh... Toki... my trusted servant, my Aoide. My servant? He questioned himself for a moment, confused - but no, that was definitely the right identification.

He licked his lips, slowly, aching in every muscle as a slow awareness of what had happened trickled back into his conscious mind.

"My lord? Are you well?" This time the question was more insistent, and he opened his eyes to look blankly at the Aoide. Toki looked nervous, a towel wrung to knots in his hands.

"Am I...?" And he had to stop for a moment. Had his voice always sounded like that? No, it was too high... no, it wasn't... no... yes...

He shook his head. "I'm... I'm okay..."

And then, only then, did it hit him. What he had done, what he had been - both lives, human, dragon, intertwined - both sets of memories. He reached out blindly for Shaiming why are you doing that? and found nothing, not even the space where he had been.

"I...." He took a deep breath, and burst into tears, weeping uncontrollably, conflicting emotions whirling through him - joy for a dream realized, gratefulness for what he'd been able to do, awe at what he'd become no you've always been this way - no, I haven't!, and a nameless sorrow for Shaiming... part of him, and yet not... that was no longer there.

Wordlessly, Toki offered him a tissue, and he snatched it, blew, and looked up at him - a new Dragon King born into the world, runny-nosed, red-eyed, and sniffly.

"I am Tian Yue," he said, with a hiccup.

Toki blinked, and then a look of understanding spread across his face. The Aoide immediately moved into a full, deep bow. "My Master and Lord, Tien Lung, Starscale Consort, Worldshield Tian Yue - it is good to see you once more," he said, with a smile.

Tian Yue smiled back, shyly, and then fell back into the bed, closing his eyes immediately and letting sleep bring him home.

Thank you, beloved.

Dragon's Awakening

Light.

He blinked muzzily against the glow of one of the bedside lamps, and fumbled for his glasses to bring the blurred world into focus, rubbing at his eyes and yawning before putting them on. "G'morning," he mumbled, then flinched slightly as the answer he'd been expecting did not come, but memories did.

That's right. Shaiming, he - and I... Tian Yue, yes. The young Dragon King sighed and inched his way up to a sitting position, leaning against the pillows. He had to squirm as his tail made itself known by twitching about, and it took him a few moments to figure out which muscles connected to the blasted thing so it would be still.

Now that it was done, that he was sitting here - not Crispin any more, not really, with no Shaiming whispering advice and reassurance - he wasn't sure. There was a twisting feeling in the pit of his stomach. Can I really do this?

It was a silly thought, left over from the human side of him, but it gnawed at him. He'd never heard of any of the reborn deities doing what Shaiming had done. Was it even allowed? Surely the old dragon had thought of that - but what if, what if, what if?

"Ah, you're awake - but you look confused, my lord," Toki said, peeking in through the door.

"I am," Tian Yue admitted, gesturing with one finger - claw? - for the Aoide to enter. "Did Shaiming do the right thing...?"

"Do you not trust him?" Toki's brown furrowed, and he tilted his head to one side. One ear flopped down over his forehead.

"I - yes, of course..."

"Then yes, he did - my lord would not have taken anything lightly nor foolishly. If he believed - then it was right." The Aoide nodded firmly.

"Hrm. I... I guess so." Tian Yue sighed, then grimaced as he moved again. "I ache."

"I imagine it is no easy thing. A bath should do well for you, my lord." Toki came up to the bed and offered a hand; after a pause, Tian Yue reached up and took it, letting the Aoide help him up and lead him to the bathroom.

A warm bath had already been drawn, and Tian Yue shucked off the last bits of what he'd been wearing when the morph happened. They were uncomfortable and binding, he realized, popped a bit at the seams and ill-fitting - obviously the tail was not the only physical change his body had undergone. He squinted at the uneven, rippling reflection in the bath water, but it was unclear.

"Do you need help in, my lord?" Toki offered.

"No... no. But I'll need some new clothes, okay?" Tian Yue slid into the tub with a sigh of relief as the warm water began to relax him almost immediately, though he scowled as his tail lashed around as if possessed, splashing water here and there until he concentrated enough to remember how to move it.

As Toki scooped up his old clothes and disappeared, Tian Yue leaned back and closed his eyes, thinking as the steam drifted around him. What was it like, being a god? No - a better question was, what had it been like, being mortal?

Restrained. Limited. Small. But also - full of potential, eagerness, worship. Love. The seeds of growth that the gods must water. Yes, that was right. The human mind was like a small jar of water floating in an endless sea, unable to comprehend the enormity of what surrounded them - and desperately needing the protection of the glass to stay alive.

A protection I can grant them now, he realized, recalling their conversation with Kishara. But how did that power work?

The answer came swift and easily to mind, sweetly, like a beloved name returning to conscious thought after a long time of distraction, and he smiled slightly. Yes.

He let himself sink down a bit more into the water and concentrated, feeling the shield around it, willing it to come forth - it was within him always, like a second skin under the physical, and he coaxed it out.

Thus freed, he urged the sphere of power to expand outward, his own body as the center, testing the limits. Further, further, furth- It stopped abruptly, and though he gritted his teeth and tensed his whole body, he could not coerce it to go any further.

It went barely around the outside of the building.

Disappointed, he let the shield fold in on itself again, taking the power back into himself, though he opened his eyes to see its retraction. It appeared as a shimmering distortion in the air, faint iridescence. And he knew without thinking that Shaiming had overestimated that power - for now, anyway.

"Do not fret, my lord - it will increase," came Toki's voice from behind him, and Tian Yue jumped, sloshing water out of the tub. The Aoide chuckled. "I speak of that power you just used, my lord; how could I not feel it, as long as I have been faithful to Tien Lung?"

Tian Yue relaxed. "Geez, Toki - way to scare a guy. God. Dragon. Whatever."

"My apologies. But remember - it will increase. I have watched the gods from afar many times, and it takes power to join with the host regardless of how it is done, I think. You cannot expect to shield the world your first day."

The young dragon shook his head. "But Shaiming promised-"

"You will be able to fulfill that promise in time. More than fulfill it." The Aoide nodded. "Do you wish to explore more of your power?"

"Um... eventually, but not right now." He felt tired from the effort of testing the shield - not exhausted, but definitely not up to trying out other things at once. "More of my power - like how?"

"Well, I do not know which of Tien Lung's abilities will manifest when, but at the very least you should be able to shift into your dragon form." Toki beamed. "Now - I have found some clothing for you, and would you not wish to see your Morgan? Shaiming wrote a letter for her, and I delivered it and informed her when the change began-"

"Dragon fo-" Tian Yue was amazed one moment, then sheepish the next - of course, dragon form, how could he have forgotten something so integral to his nature? But Toki's next words derailed that train of thought. "Morgan? She knew? Oh, man, she must be dying of anxiety!" Tian Yue grabbed the soap and scrubbed himself off rapidly, then put his glasses on the side before dunking his head, bathing with a speed learned from college dorm showers. "She's going to be so..." Surprised? Happy? Or... He swallowed hard, suddenly. What would Morgan think about what had happened?

But it didn't matter - he had to go to her, let him know that he was okay, and - see for himself. He retrieved his glasses and scrambled out of the tub as soon as the last bit of soap was rinsed off, into the towel that Toki held out for him. He accepted the offered yukata without hesitation, lunged for his toothbrush - and stopped when he saw his reflection in the mirror.

He had changed. The reflection before him was broader in the shoulders, and a bit more well-built than even the training could have made him. More obviously, he was taller than he had been, by a good four inches. The tail hung down in a graceful curve, and smatters of scaling the color of Shaiming's patterned his lower calves. He touched the soft points on his ears with wonder.

Toki stood behind him, an odd smile on his face. "My lord?"

"I..." He stared a moment longer, then smiled himself and turned to the Aoide. "Thank you, Toki. For everything."

"It is my honor and pleasure to serve Tien Lung," Toki said softly, bowing low.

"Please inform Nebula of my... arrival," he said, grabbing the toothbrush at last and smearing toothpaste over the head. "I'm going to mffo mfm Mffmfm."

With that mumbled declaration, Tian Yue spit the toothpaste out into the sink and ran for the door, leaving Toki behind, bewildered. Too late the Aoide remembered - "Wait! Lord Tian Yue!"

But he was already gone.

"Bother," Toki sighed, but he knew better than to disturb his lord and lady. He'd just have to give Tian Yue his letter at another time.

My Lord Dragon

mistalina13
The waiting was beginning to grate on her, how much time had passed? Not that it really mattered, Toki came had come to tell her some time ago that it had finally begun. Since then she'd remained in her room, trying to find something to occupy her mind. Despite what Shaiming had promised, she was still worried for the both of them...and what would befall afterward.

She had paced her room, tried to read...to sketch, to paint her figurines. Nothing could distract her, so she had simply taken to sitting on the side of her bed, petting the little winged guinea pig creature, waiting in silence and staring at the door.

Sosiqui
Morgan's door was the scariest thing the newly reborn Dragon King had ever seen. It seemed to loom at him, a dread portal, and Tian Yue bit his lip and brushed nervously at his hair. Toki had found a simple yukata for him to wear, as the process of melding with Shaiming had changed him physically - not a great deal, but enough to make his old clothing a poor fit. Somewhat taller, somewhat broader in the shoulders, somewhat pointer in the ears and claws... and, of course, the tail. Said tail lashed around under the folds of the yukata; he hadn't quite figured it out yet, and sometimes it seemed to move all on its own, without any input from him.

Tian Yue forced himself to stare at the door, and felt nervousness twist his stomach. He loved Morgan, that hadn't changed one bit... but he had changed. Would she still care for him, or would the differences scare her away, and make her mourn for Crispin?

But he was Crispin. Sort of. He was Crispin more than he was Shaiming, at any rate.

Tian Yue took a deep breath, then knocked on the door before he could get too panicky about his prospects.

mistalina13
Even though she had expected it at some point the sudden knock on the door made her jump to her feet, causing the akuti to tumble from her lap let out an angry chirp at the sudden drop and flutter over to sit itself on her desk.

Her heart started to race, who was it though? Toki, come to fetch her, Nebula....or...? She swallowed hard and tried her best to find her voice.

"Come in...."

Sosiqui
Tian Yue gulped and pushed open the door a little bit. The face that peered shyly into the room was Crispin's, essentially, except for those little differences... and he had no idea what to do. He hadn't expected to even be here now!

And then, there she was, on the side of the bed.

"U-um," the young Dragon King stammered, stepping tentatively into the room, wondering where the courage Shaiming had promised had run off to. "Um... hi...?" His tail lashed back and forth once, whipping at the fabric constraining it, the scales flashing briefly beneath the yukata's hem as it moved.

mistalina13
At first Morgan felt rooted to the spot. Any thoughts she had vanished as she stared at the reborn god that stepped into her room. She barely took notice of the changes, only really registering the fact that he looked mostly like himself. A few tears slid down her cheeks, Shaiming had done what he sought to do.

After a moment she was able to take the few steps to close the gap between them, take hold of him, bury her face against his chest and started weeping.

Sosiqui
Tian Yue blinked, then wrapped his arms around her as she clung to him, not sure if this was a good sign, or a bad one - she was crying, yes, but she was crying in his arms.

"Morgan, it's... it's me... Crispin, kind of." The name felt slightly off, slightly incorrect - but it was more right for him than Shaiming, if less so than Tian Yue. "Shaiming, he..." He swallowed again, hard, and tried to think of how he could possibly explain, while trying to ignore the bittersweet feelings that arose at the mention of his dearest friend. "He made a choice..."

mistalina13
Morgan looked up at him once her tears were spent. "I know, beloved." My Lord Dragon. She reached up and brushed his bangs away from his eyes. "I know." She smiled faintly and took a moment or two to get a better look at him.

Sosiqui
Tian Yue stared down at her and blinked again, this time in surprise. "You... know? How?"

mistalina13
"He said he'd do what he could...to preserve you, and I trusted him." Morgan reached up and caressed his cheek. "I apologize for crying before."

She blushed faintly and glanced away, it's not like she had meant to cry. Her feelings of the last while had just caught up with her. Feelings of happiness and yet an odd sort of mourning for Crispin and Shaiming who both were there and yet not, it seemed.

Sosiqui
"No... it's okay, I mean... I cried a lot too..." Tian Yue said, awkwardly. "And then there's this thing," he added, making a face as his tail tangled itself in his yukata. "I'm not sure what to do with it. There's all kinds of thoughts, memories, ideas and knowledge inside my head from Shaiming - and not one bit of it is about tails." He grinned, and scooped her up in his arms, then sobered a bit. "You're sure? That it's okay? I'm... not... quite how I used to be. My old name doesn't seem to fit right... I'm Tian Yue now. Can you love a dragon?" His smile was a little bit sad.

Sosiqui
Tian Yue stared at her, then laughed, a smile spreading across his face. "Do I - of course I do, you... you goober!" he teased. "A lot of things may have changed, but not that. Never that!" He twirled her around, briefly, then put her down with a gentle touch.

"A lot of things... there's power now. Actual power, real magic, but it's not as much as Shaiming had hoped." He sighed. "I tried making a shield like he promised Kishara we'd do as soon as we could, but it only went as far as the outside of this bulding, no further. Nowhere near the whole city."

mistalina13
Morgan giggled again and grinned, hugging him again once he put her down. "I'm glad." She looked up at him and frowned slightly at the comment about the shield.

"Perhaps, you have to grow into your power is all." That was the only suggestion she could of offer, at it was a conjecture at best. She tilted her head up and kissed his cheek.

Sosiqui
"I guess so. That was... not easy, all this." He gestured at himself and grimaced. "It felt like forever but Toki said we were only unconcious for five minutes before I woke up and the tail began to grow and stuff... I hope I didn't worry you if you heard screaming," he added, anxiously. "It, um. Kinda hurt... and then I was exhausted and fell asleep for a long time... got up, Toki helped me, tried the shield thing, came here. I had to see you... to know if you still loved me." Tian Yue bent down and kissed her, firmly, on the lips.

After a moment he withdrew, and smiled. "I can't bring the stars back yet, but I know someday I will."

mistalina13
"I thought I heard something, but I wasn't sure...too busy preoccupying myself with hoping you were alright." She said sheepishly. "Why would you-" Her words and thoughts her cut off when he kissed her and when he drew back her cheeks were rather red.

"Right now, I have the one I care about most back." She grinned and her earlier question resurfaced in her mind. "Out of curiosity, why did you worry I wouldn't love you?"

Sosiqui
"Umm..." Tian Yue looked sheepish. "I guess I was afraid - I mean, I'm not who I was anymore, not completely... and I was scared that the parts that changed might be the parts you loved..."

mistalina13
"Beloved, to my eyes you don't seem so very different as you might think. You've matured, grown as a person. Shaiming helped you find the strength you've always had. Just because your a little different doesn't make you any less to me. Your the one I love, Tian Yue, for the rest of my life."

Morgan smiled softly and hoped her words would be well received, even if they sounded naive, since she spoke from her heart.

Sosiqui
Tian Yue beamed and kissed Morgan again. "You're always... just... you know what to say. Hmm. So what can a Dragon King do for his princess today? There's something I've been wanting to try - but I'm not sure how it'll go..." His eyes were bright.

mistalina13
This time she returned the kiss and laced her arms around his neck. "Mm..and what would that be?" She grinned, glad her words were well received.

Sosiqui
He laughed at her impish look. "It doesn't involve beds... though that might be an idea for later," he said, with a wink and a grin that he never would have managed without blushing in his earlier days. "More like... flying..."

mistalina13
Morgan turned bright red and her eyes went a little wide. And he just said that casually, without blushing....Wow. It took her a moment to compose herself after that. "Ooh...sounds cool."

Sosiqui
"I haven't tried it yet, but I should be able to - well, shapeshift," Tian Yue said, a thoughtful look on his face. "Into a dragon shape. That's how I always appeared to Cr- no, I mean, that's how Shaiming always appeared to me." He sighed. "It's confusing, this whole merging thing. But yes. Shaiming always looked like a dragon inside my mind, and I can kind of feel the shape there, waiting to be stepped into..."

mistalina13
"That must be interesting. Are dragons as beautiful as books say they are?" Morgan was more than a little curious, considering they were supposed to be some of the most noble and breathtaking creatures of the fantasy world.

Sosiqui
"Well... Shaiming was beautiful. Purple with a blue mane, Asian-type dragon, naturally... like the statues downstairs in the throne room. But I was thinking... I could try that, outside of course, and if it worked we could go for a fly." He grinned, a little nervous but excited. The sky and the dragonshape had a strange, sweet call to them.

mistalina13
"Really?" Now that sounded cool. "Wow...." She remembered a few of the statues from the throne room, though not in any kind of detail seeing as she rarely went down there she could help it. "...and that sounds like it'd be fun."

Sosiqui
"Well, let's see... I'm kind of curious what it's like..." He laughed then, a joyful, incredulous sound. "This is - can you believe this?! I'm seriously standing here telling you about how when we go downstairs, I'm going to try and shapeshift into a dragon, and we'll go flying - and you love me and... pinch me?" He grinned and offered her his arm, to hold or to pinch, as she chose.

mistalina13
Morgan smiled and laced her arm with his, then leaned up to give him another little kiss. "Better than a pinch, no?"

Sosiqui
"Mmm, much... Come on, let's go!"

He led Morgan out and downstairs, though he did peer furtively into the throne room to see if Lord Harmodius was there. He had a vague sense that he was somehow shirking his duty, a twinge of guilt - but no, he was really only taking the measure of his own power before presenting himself to his Lord. He smiled; that was true, and there was no deception. There was no rule against enjoying himself with his lover while doing so!

Once outside, Tian Yue made a face at the lava. "I forgot how much all this reeks... let's get further out... I don't want to put my tail in the lava."

A moment later, he stumbled as his tail twitched around one ankle, an instinctive movement of protection - but one he was utterly unprepared for as he stumbled along the ash-covered path. "Oof!"

mistalina13
Morgan took a moment to look at the statues before they headed outside, making a note to herself to come back for a better look later. She frowned and wrinkled her nose once they got outside. She hadn't been out in so long she'd nearly forgotten how bad it seemed.

She moved to catch him when he stumbled. "Very graceful." She was just teasing. "You alright?"

Sosiqui
"I'm fine, it's just - this damned tail. Thanks," Tian Yue said with a sigh, straightening and brushing himself off. Now he was ashy everywhere below his calves, wonderful.

After he untangled himself, he nodded. "Okay, let's see... there's flat beyond, where the road used to be, and no lava. That should work. Gosh, do you think I have to take my clothes off first, or does it work like a magical girl anime?"

mistalina13
Morgan couldn't hold back the gigglefit from that comment, and it took several moments for her to get enough air again to form words. "I...dunno." She smiled, barely managing to hold back another gigglefit.

Sosiqui
"Hey, it was a serious question!" he protested, but grinned. "Mm... I think I'll go on the safe side." Quickly he untied the yukata and squirmed his arms out of the sleeves, though he let it hang loosely about him like a cloak; if the transformation didn't involve what he was wearing, at least he wouldn't rip the thing. As an afterthought he took off his glasses and handed them to Morgan. "Take care of them, please?"

mistalina13
"I'm sorry." Morgan blushed and glanced away, not knowing if he'd outright strip or not. She glanced up at him shyly, when he handed her his glasses. "Of course, beloved." She smiled and rocked up on her toes to give him a little kiss.

Sosiqui
"Thanks," he said, and returned the kiss with a smile before backing up. "Um. I'm... not sure how big... so you might want to stay back. I don't want to hurt you accidentally."

Once he was far enough away from her that he wasn't worried, Tian Yue took a deep breath and let his eyes drift closed, seeking the dragon shape. It was there in a heartbeat, waiting for him, and with another deep breath, he moved to step into it.

There was a wave of disorientation, accompanied by a sudden 'whump' sound as air rushed away, displaced by the sudden appearance of dragon. To Morgan, the shift was visible only as a hazy distortion that shifted from human to dragon, leaving behind a purple-scaled Oriental dragon the size of a large horse, with a blue mane rippling down his back, a fan spreading out from his tail, horns lightly curving from his head.

Tian Yue stumbled, then opened his eyes and blinked. No haziness - his eyes were perfect in this shape. He took a step and nearly fell. Too many limbs!

mistalina13
Morgan nodded and kept her distance as he asked, waiting and watching curiously. Her eyes widened a little when she saw him shift. Absolutely beautiful... "Wow..." It was all she could manage as she walked to his side.

Sosiqui
Tian Yue turned his head and looked at her, for a moment surprised at how small she was, then opened his mouth in a toothy draconic grin. "This is the coolest thing EVER," he rumbled, thrilled. He turned and looked at himself as much as he could. I look like Shaiming...

Glancing up, he saw the stars, and immediately felt them calling to him. He slowly got to his feet, remembering how the dragon shape worked - it was so easy - and whuffled to Morgan. "Climb on - the stars are singing. I must go to them!"

Tian Yue knelt down low so she could climb on and sit behind his head, able to hang on to his horns and mane.

mistalina13
Morgan laughed, "I bet it is. Your dragonshape is beautiful." She carefully climbed up once he bent down, settling herself behind his head and running her hands through his mane gently. "So...hang onto your mane, I'm guessing, beloved?"

Sosiqui
"Yes - just hold on, you won't hurt me. I won't let you fall," he reassured her, trying not to shift back and forth in his eagerness to just fly. Now that he was here, with her, in this form, with the stars - gnawed by Destruction, but old friends! - he could hardly wait to go.

The instant she was on his back and he sensed she was secure, Tian Yue tossed his head lightly. He stamped his back feet and launched himself up into the air with a whiplike crack of his tail, and a roar. The air rushing around his long body felt wonderful, like nothing else, and he rumbled low with pleasure.

"Well?" he asked, wishing he could see the look on Morgan's face.

mistalina13
To her it it had been the same sensation as roller coaster when he took to the air, but far less terrifying since she knew she was safe. Morgan giggled and grinned as she looked around. It seemed a bit less bleak from up here. "It's wonderful up here, thanks for bringing me."

Sosiqui
"I'll have to try out more... acrobatic... ways of flying when you're not with me," he rumbled back, pleased beyond words. Though the sky was mottled and bruised, stars dim or gone, he could still hear them singing. This was his element, or as close to it as he dared go with Morgan - while he instictively felt that he could go up, and up, and up without harm, he wasn't sure if the same would be true of riders.

He coiled lightly and flicked his tail, using the long fan as a rudder with ease, turning. The Pantheon was far below, and he realized with a start the extent of the destruction. The coast lacked water, yet far away he could see the glimmer of it, with distant skyscrapers on the edge of the horizon. Koiso, perhaps. "Is there anything you want to see?" he asked.

mistalina13
Morgan chuckled. "Alright..." She looked around again, and shook her head. "Nothing comes to mind really..." This little trip had given her an idea for something to paint though it'd likely take her a while to manage it.

"Mmm..and you wouldn't be interested in a massage when we got back, would you?" It was the best way she could think of to thank him for their little adventure today. Part of her wondered if he would appreciate them as much as Crispin had seemed to in the past.

Sosiqui
"Absolutely - I'm kind of achy from, you know." He made a flip of his tail. "Everything, really. And..." Tian Yue rumbled low, the sound making his sides vibrate for a moment. "I'll never protest more time with you."

Impish and gleeful now, the dragon banked gently one more. He could see the Pantheon below, and the large skylight above his bed - and it was open. He smiled. Good, Toki.

"Would now work?" he asked, with a wicked tone in his voice.

mistalina13
Morgan giggled again, letting out a little squeak when he rumbled. "Glad you feel that way." She grinned a little nervously, wondering what he could possibly be up to, when she heard his next words. "Uhm...sure..." She obviously hadn't noticed the skylight.

Sosiqui
"Good. Hang on." Tian Yue grinned, then let out another roar before flicking his tail and angling his body down into a dive. It wasn't fast enough or sudden enough to make Morgan feel in danger of falling, but it was definitely swift, down towards the Pantheon below, and the open skylight.

As the roof loomed closer, he roared again for the sheer joy of it, then whipped through the skylight. Above the bed he released the dragon-shape, and grabbed for Morgan as he fell the remaining five feet into the softness of the bed, laughing as he caught her, his eyes bright.

mistalina13
Morgan clung to him as they fell the last few feet, her eyes squeezed shut. She wasn't terribly fond of falling and only opening her eyes after a moment or two to look up at him, managing a little smile. "Mischevious dragon." She teased and cuddled up to him.

Sosiqui
"Mmhm." Tian Yue grinned at her, his face beaming and slightly flushed, then leaned in for a kiss. He wasn't sure where the yukata had ended up, but at this point he didn't really care. "That was amazing. You are amazing, you know that?"

mistalina13
She kissed him in return and blushed at the compliment, quite speechless for moment.

Sosiqui
"So... now what?" Tian Yue asked, impishly. "Massage time? Or... maybe for that idea we had earlier... involving beds?" He grinned, and moved to nibble lightly at one of her ears.

mistalina13
Morgan's blush deepend and she made a little appreciative noise when nibbled on, still a little suprised by how forward and affectionate he was. "Massage first..unless you'd rather..." Her voice just sort died off after that.

Sosiqui
"Only if you'd rather, love - it's your choice," he said, with a grin, and pulled back a little.

mistalina13
"Massage first, then we'll see." Morgan nodded, though partly she was secretly curious about well, ya know, it'd likely be quite different than last time.

"Oh yeah." She shifted a little and reached into her pocket, plucking out his glasses and offering them to him. "You might want these back." They were in the same condition as they had been when he asked her to hold onto them earlier.

Sosiqui
"Oh... that would explain why you weren't nearly as exquisitely beautiful as usual," he teased, taking the glasses back and putting them on. "There - now you're absolutely perfect."

There was a polite cough from the doorway, and Tian Yue perked up as Toki poked his head in. "Did you find the skylight to your liking?"

"Marvelous, Toki," Tian Yue said happily.

"Good!" The Aoide beamed. "And good day to you, Lady Morgan. I trust Tien Lung is to your liking?"

Tian Yue gave Morgan an aggrieved look.

mistalina13
She glanced toward the door and nodded to Toki, smiling brightly. "He's wonderful." She sat up and gave him a kiss. "Absolutely wonderful."

Sosiqui
Toki beamed as though he'd been responsible for the whole thing. "Good. Good! Ah, you do Lord Shaiming credit, both of you, bless him." He nodded vigorously. "Can I bring anything, my Lord?"

"Hmm... ice water and... er. Something to eat. I'm hungry," he realized. The morph had burned energy, as had the transformation and flight - now that he was aware of the need, he was amazed he hadn't noticed it sooner. "Lots of something to eat."

mistalina13
Morgan cuddled close to Tian Yue again, letting out a little contented sigh and looking up at him after a moment or two. "It's nice, just being here with you." It was mostly murmured, she reached up to touch his cheek afterward and smiled softly.

Sosiqui
"I didn't think I would be, ever again," Tian Yue admitted. "Back... before." The memories were there, twinned with the ancient memories of Tien Lung - two lives, two timelines stretching back, the mortal one so short and sharp compared to the long flow of a Dragon King's existence. "But - I will have duties. I should present myself to Lord Harmodious once I have recovered." He shivered a bit, and whether it was from dread, or awe, or even eagerness, he could not say.

mistalina13
She nodded and sat up, "And I will be here when you return, my lord, I promise." She reached out and took one of his hands, kissing the back of it and nuzzling it. "I love you, so very much."

Missives from the Past

After Morgan had left, Tian Yue remained nestled in bed - exhaustion had not yet overtaken him, but he was teetering on the edge, after the change, the flight, the... er, what they did after... and everything else. They had dined together, and now he was merely waiting... and thinking.

The young Dragon King blinked as Toki approached the bed, an envelope held out in one hand. He took it without thinking, and raised both eyebrows at the name written on it. Tian Yue.

"Who...?" He turned it over - it was sealed with a sigil in silver-flecked black wax, and when he saw it he nearly dropped the letter in his shock. He knew that sigil - "Shaiming!" With hands trembling, he tore it open, devouring the words within.

Quote:
My dearest Tian Yue -

Or perhaps you did not choose to keep that name. I am writing this in February, and I do not know when the change will occur, nor if you will like the name I have so presumptuously chosen for you. I do know that if you are reading these words, then you have come into being and Tien Lung Shaiming is no more.

My son, you must be strong. There may be opposition or difficulties in becoming Tien Lung - you have my blessing, my power and as much of my strengths as I could give you, but some may see you as an interloper. Again, I say to you - be strong! Stand firm, and claim the true nature of the divine role I have ceded to you. You know I would not have dared do so without utmost faith in you.

I fear there is one more thing I must cede to you, and I worry for Morgan's behalf - it regards Universe. Lucius, our beloved-

"Lucius," Tian Yue murmured as he read, then gasped as a sudden wave of emotion crashed down on him. Longing, loneliness - ridiculous, he had just been with Morgan! - and desire to see Universe once more... to reclaim him, to...

The letter fell from one hand and Tian Yue stared ahead, unseeing for a moment, trapped in sudden need that had nothing to do with mere physical desire, and everything to do with a kinship, friendship, love that had flowered over millennia. Compared to it, Morgan was-

Morgan is what? No - she is my love... but... Lucius... as.. well...? It took a moment to reconcile the thought, the mortal shreds protesting against such a strange dichotomy for a moment, before something shifted and he was able to accept it. Lucius and Morgan; both loved, both needed. One old, one new, one anciently familiar, one mortal held dear. Neither more than the other; one from each part of him, and that was fine. He had a dizzying feeling that perhaps this was how the gods of Love felt all the time, only for all the world at once...

He picked up the letter again from where it had fallen, and continued to read.

Quote:
-Lucius, our beloved. I say 'our' because I could not in good faith remove that emotion from our merged self - my Lord Harmodius, he whose commands outweigh all things, bid me tend to the matter of my consort, and this is a duty I must pass on to you. Equally, I do not wish Lucius to be bereft of love - he is outcast, there are many with a reason to hate him. But do not, my son, do not - we were together for longer than many lives of men. I know him. He is not irredeemable!

I pray that you will cherish him so as well, if he will so allow it - at the very least, keep him close as a friend. Morgan is also beloved, I have no doubt, but there is also this - I am certain that Morgan was brought to the Pantheon for a reason. It may well be that sometime soon a god or goddess will claim her as host, and I do not wish you to be alone any more than I wish it of Lucius.

The thought of Morgan as a host - was in some way painful, yet in another a relief and a joy. Pain, for the changing of a woman deeply loved, but joy for the return of another of the Pantheon. Perhaps, if it happened, she could even attain what Tian Yue had...

Quote:
I believe that the key to aiding Lucius lies in a place called the Gallery of Celestia - I am sure that merely reading the words calls a host of visions to your mind. There is a star chart in the desk, but the memories are old and the stars will have changed since then, through time and through Destruction's power. Be careful!

Yet before you seek the Gallery - I bid you hurry to the Twin Crown's side, if you have not already done so. Do you understand now, the love and the loyalty? I know that you must. Run to him, and bring the letter I penned to him as well; I would explain myself in my own words, and not leave the burden on you alone. I pray he will receive you openly, but if he does not, fear not - you are strong, and he will recognize that in time.

I leave to you my power and memory. Use them well, and use also the aspects of my Self I have ceded to you. And I thank you again from the bottom of my heart for what you have allowed me to do. Tien Lung is free of dishonor. Keep us so - and remember that even though I can no longer speak with you, a part of me will be with you for all eternity.

I love you dearly, Tian Yue.

- Shaiming

A blotch appeared on the page near the dragon's neat signature, and it took Tian Yue a moment to realize that the source was a tear, and that the tears were coming from his own eyes. He quickly put the letter down again, not wanting to damage it, and let the tears flow freely. Oh, Shaiming... I miss you so much...

"My lord?"

Tian Yue looked up with a jerk at Toki; he hadn't even been aware of the Aoide's presence. There was a soft, knowing smile on his face. "What?"

"Lord Shaiming gave these letters to me, and told me to open and deliver them and prescribed times. The first was for myself, which I was bid to open upon the beginning of his morphing. The second was for Lady Morgan, which I was bid to deliver after reading my own - and the third for a name I did not recognize until I read my own letter... and yes, I wept too." The Aoide's smile turned sad, and Tian Yue felt a small surge of kinship with him; he, too, understood what it felt like. "The third was this one, of course. There are also letters for Lord Lucius, Lord Shenlei and Lord Harmodius." He swallowed after the last one.

"Lord Harmodius..." Tian Yue indeed understood the loyalty and the love, and the need. There was love for Morgan, and Lucius, but the adoration and abject desire for the Twin Crown overrode them all, as a tidal wave overrides the sea. "Yes. Tomorrow I will seek him out, when I am well-rested and ready." He shook his head, then folded the letter with reverence and handed it back to Toki. "Place this with honor and care in my hoard. I do not want to lose it."

"Understood." Toki took it as he would a holy relic. "Do you require anything else, my lord?"

"Sleep." Tian Yue shook his head. "Leave me, please - and tell Nebula as well." He still hadn't seen the other Aoide, but at the moment he didn't really care. After the emotional onslaught the letter had brought, he felt more exhausted, more than ready for bed.

Toki bowed. "Yes, my Lord. Rest well."

Tian Yue nestled down into the blankets as the Aoide left, then put his glasses on the nightstand and turned off the light. He took several deep breaths before closing his eyes, and despite his exhaustion, his head was so filled with thoughts that it took him some time before true sleep came.

Of Dragons and Destruction

Meepfur
The antlered Dragon King had once more settled himself on the floor, his back against the bronze dragon statue that sat to one side of the dais and throne. For whatever reason, it was always this statue he chose...perhaps a lingering inclination of his host's, causing him to gravitate to the metal object over wood or glass or obsidian. Whatever the reason was, he didn't think on it overmuch - mostly it had become a habit, and those could be rather comfortable.

Zhijian sat bent forward, curled in on himself in a very nonchalant, catlike way as he cradled the bowl of water he lapped at. Sipping from a cup didn't quite work with a muzzle like his, so he'd settled for what some might consider the less dignified way of drinking; he, however, saw no fault in animalistic, and couldn't have cared less.

Sosiqui
Tian Yue was determined this time - he would present himself to his Lord, if possible - wherever he was. It was mildly disconcerting not to know, but he could tell the moment he descended the stairs to the lower floor that Lord Harmodius was not present.

However, someone else was. Seppa? he thought as he caught sight of blue and gold fur, but the thought was dashed as he drew closer and saw the changes. That's right. Morgan said she'd changed too... There was a small twinge of sadness for his furry friend, but it was eclipsed by a rush of pride at seeing another of the Dragon Kings ascended as he had.

Approaching Zhijian, he nodded his head to the other, equal to equal. "Good evening, Fangbridle."

Meepfur
Zhijian looked up from his drink at the sound of feet on the stairs and watched patiently to see who it was. Shaiming he knew right away, because his fellow dragon, while clearly an improved and tailed version of Crispin, still looked remarkably like his host. He breathed in, sampling the other King's scent.

He mirrored his greeting nod, but did not stand, although to Zhijian this was not an act of disrespect. If Shaiming wanted to sit he was welcome to sit, or he could stand as he pleased. Zhijian had already made his choice and was quite comfortable where he was. He let his manner and voice make clear his respect, and as far as he was concerned no show was necessary. It seemed wasteful, unimportant, stale.

"Shaiming," he rumbled with pleasure, so far unaware that this was not Shaiming as such. "Brother."

Sosiqui
A little pang, there - was that how all his greetings would go? Hopefully not - but Tian Yue smiled all the same. "Tien Lung Shaiming has joined with me. I am now known as Tian Yue, but I am Tien Lung all the same... and I think I'm on the same mission as yourself, Zhijian." He looked up at the empty throne. "Our Lord - not knowing where he is, exactly... feels strange."

It was disquieting. Where was Destruction? It wasn't his fault, was it? No, of course not... right?

Meepfur
"Tian Yue," he corrected himself, letting the information sink in for a moment, "But brother still." Interesting...perhaps that had something to do with why he still looked so very much like Crispin. It was not something Zhijian would have done with Seppa, but things with her had been the way they had to be.

He followed Tian Yue's gaze to the throne, his green eyes filled with longing. "I do not seek so much as wait, but it is near enough. I suspect He knows, and merely chooses His time." Zhijian set his bowl aside. "And so I am content to wait until that time."

Sosiqui
"I, too - I wish to present my sword to him." Tian Yue let one hand linger on the hilt of the sword that Destruction had given, as it rested in his belt, one claw tracing the curving lines of the jade basket hilt. "Starfang, it is called. Though, sadly, my own power is somewhat lacking from what we had hoped. I can only shield this place, but I will use whatever I have gladly."

Another glance at the throne, strange mixture of loyalty, longing, and fear - then back at Zhijian. "How long have you been here? Have you rooms of your own?"

Meepfur
"It is a worthy weapon," Zhijian said, eyeing the jade of it. His look was not envious, though - he was not much for swords. Fists and feet, claws and fangs, those were his weapons of choice. "I am in such a position as well," he admitted, "My powers a shadow of what they were, but all I have I will use to serve."

"I cannot be sure how long, but I have waited since this body became mine." He looked utterly unconcerned by it, however. "I have no rooms, but I have not yet found need for them. Perhaps I will ask our Lord, when He comes. For now my place is here, to wait."

Sosiqui
Tian Yue was surprised - and a little uneasy. Was that what he should have been doing? Waiting tirelessly by the throne? Guarding as they had practiced, instead of trying out his new abilities, trying to feel out who and what he was?

Well, there was no help for it. "I'll join you, for a time - and you're welcome in my rooms, if you wish. I have two Aoidei to tend to things there, which is quite a lot for my current state."

Meepfur
"Company would not be an unwelcome change." He scratched his ear, toying with the gold piercings he'd inherited from his host. He quite liked them, really. All in all, the pard had been an ideal host despite her...displeasure.

"Two Aoidei, hmm?" Zhijian mused thoughtfully. He remembered having servants of his own, but he had yet to miss them...but then, he didn't have any needs for them to fill just yet. "Thank you for the offer of hospitality."

Sosiqui
Tian Yue nodded, then looked thoughtful - it felt awkward somehow to be standing here, but it didn't seem right to just sit down casually before Destruction's throne, even if Zhijian was doing it...

"You are welcome - yes, I will join you. One moment?" He nodded to the other Dragon King, then stepped out of the area of the dais to tuck himself behind one of the walls. Thus hidden from Zhijian's view, he slipped out of the hanfu with care, so as not to rumple it, and changed.

It was much easier this time than the first, much less disorienting, and he didn't stumble, though there was a small wave of dizziness. Tian Yue took a moment to breathe in, enjoying the differences of the dragon shape - the ash-and-spice (but so distant!) scent of Destruction; Zhijian's own feline-tinted yet somehow familiar scent.

After making sure his clothing would be fine, and easily retrievable, he padded back around and settled next to Zhijian. "This is more comfortable," he admitted, with a slight rumble. His fanned tail twitched lightly, sweeping up small ash-clouds from the floor.

Meepfur
Zhijian was somewhat amused when he realized what Tian Yue had hidden himself to do. He'd left to shed his clothes and change! He couldn't help but note with a quirk of a smile, "Perhaps my memory is faulted, but I do not remember such modesty of my brothers, that they hid to bare themselves and change."

He laughed, stretching out his own furred yet naked form on the floor. It was not particularly for emphasis, really just comfort. Sprawling was a blissful feeling, and he liked the feel of it when the ash found its way into his fur.

Sosiqui
Tian Yue was rather glad that dragons didn't blush, as such. "I'd rather not tear my clothes, my Aoide, Toki, would have fits of despair," he said, with a wry grin. "And... well, modesty is not a fault, is it? Not that I mind if others do such, but... I prefer to keep such things to my lovers," he added, flicking one ear and opening his mouth a little wider in a smile.

Meepfur
Zhijian laughed further, rolling from his side onto his stomach to rest his head on his forearms as his laughter died down into chuckling. He viewed Tian Yue sideways, pleased by and at ease in his company. "Of course it is not. An amusing quirk in a god perhaps, but no fault."

"Lovers," he chuckled, "Like that little mouse of yours. Morgan, is it?"

Sosiqui
"Yes, Morgan," he said, surprised for a moment until he remembered - she had talked about meeting Zhijian, hadn't she? "And - there is also the matter of my consort of old," he added, more soberly. "I care deeply for them both, and would not choose between them." Another glance up towards the throne. But with Lord Harmodius' previous wishes to have him tend to said consort... he might not have a choice. Another twist.

Meepfur
"Consort," he rumbled curiously, looking distant as he searched faded and jumbled memory in an effort to bring to mind this old lover of Tien Lung's to mind. "I recall...something." Joy Merriment? A toast? Or was that all simply memories of his host's mixing with is own, her ideas of union? "But the name does not come."

Two he would not choose between. The new Crispin's, the old Shaiming's...so Tian Yue was very much both of them. He couldn't imagine doing something like that, blending himself with his host. Especially if it meant attachment to that lovesick Albion, not to mention Seppa's offspring.

Sosiqui
"Lucius - Universe," Tian Yue admitted, though there was no shame in it... simply matter-of-fact. Still, his tail lashed back and forth once. "I know what he has done, but I do not believe him irredeemable - indeed, Shaiming felt that some of what occurred was his own fault, for not being there to love Lucius nor shield our Lord from Universe's blades. Though that guilt passed with him..." His voice trailed off.

"Lord Harmodius requested that he tend to the matter of his consort. What was his is now mine, emotion and responsibility both."

Meepfur
Zhijian's hackles raised at the mention of the traitor's name, and a faint growl slipped from him. He had not been there, in fact had yet to encounter Lucius, but he had been told all he needed to know. Betrayal, betrayal of Zhijian's Lord. Their Lord.

There was no anger with Tian Yue, though; any there might have been disappeared when he heard that Harmodius had given command to Shaiming to tend to his old lover. He could not - and did not - ever disagree with his Master. He was right in all things, always. "Then I wish you success in your endeavor."

In a way he was jealous, and it was audible in his voice, and in the way he looked towards the throne. "I yet wait for His command."

Sosiqui
Tian Yue managed not to flinch at the growl, but he relaxed when he realized the sound was not directed at him. He could not deny the other dragon's right to snarl at the thought of what Lucius had done. "Thank you," he rumbled, to Zhijian's encouragement.

He whuffed softly at the longing, envious tone in the Fangbridle's voice, and looked up at the throne again. "We only saw him once, some weeks ago, when we were separate still... he took our fealty then, but I want to offer it once more as myself. And show him what Shaiming chose."

Meepfur
His eyes were half-closed as he imagined his Lord, wishing to twine around Him like the great cat he'd become, seeking His attentions, His words, His command. Harmodius, the absolute center of Zhijian's world, his devotion so consuming it could overwhelm all other ties.

"My host did not wish to see Him, but I do...to look upon His face again and hear His words." He let out a long sigh, his tail lashing behind him with the strength of his longing.

Sosiqui
"He is, of course, Destruction now." Tian Yue could see in his memories, now, the difference - though he had never known it, while mortal. The memories of Tien Lung held images of Creation, bright hair and pale skin, arching wings. If that was all that the godlings here had ever known, small wonder that they were dismayed by the Twin Crown's other aspect. "Many here did not know him as such; he was Creation at their arising. But in this incarnation I have known nothing else."

Meepfur
Zhijian, too, could recall his Lord in His gentler form, but to him it mattered not at all whether He was Creation, Destruction, or balanced. His devotion did not waver. "Whatever He is," he expressed, "I will love Him as I always have."

He was starting to move closer to his fellow dragon, drawn to the comfort of being close to one like him.

Sosiqui
"As do we all, though Shen Lung prefers Destruction," Tian Yue said with a wry grin. "I believe, though, that there is pain in being so imbalanced, but I am sworn to neutrality. The little godlings changed him; let them change him back. Unless He orders." He nodded.

Noticing the other Dragon King's movements, Tian Yue shifted so that his long back curled slightly towards the other. It was a strange kinship they shared, but a welcome one.

Meepfur
"If anyone did, it would be Shen-Lung," he chuckled, seeing Tian Yue's invitation and drawing up close to lean against the dragon's back. He let slip a bit of a purr, pleased by the contact and companionship. "If He orders it will be my duty, otherwise I leave it to others less faithful; but if it is his wish that I help to destroy, then I will do so."

Perhaps sinister, there was no announcement to Destruction's arrival, no sound that hissed along the halls. He wore a drape of interlocking, rectangular plates from his thorned hips, something akin to bronze mail. No clear shifts of metal on metal, or metal against armoured tails. His stride from the shadow between the forefeet of the glass dragon was not swift.

His face was drawn, lined with foreign, unlovely modifications. The flesh seemed pulled around newly forming muscles, which twitxhed under the cracked and charring surface of the once smooth lava-veined charcoal. Razored teeth, like a dragons, seemed more prominent, pushing out his full lips, elongating the line of his profile. His eyes fell on them, thin, continuous lines of grey smoke trailed like burning incense from the corners of his lashes.

". . ."

A soft, thrumming purr, deep as earthen quake rumors was the only thing that escaped the faint part of his lips. He closed and opened his eyes deliberately, as mortals did in hopes of washing away the last vestiges of a nightmare on waking.

Sosiqui
The movement and sudden scent of his Lord made Tian Yue snap to sudden attention and awareness at once, and he moved swiftly to his feet, rumbling low inside - the sound answering Destruction's own. He bowed his head low for a moment, then straightened, meeting his Lord's gaze. Humility before the Twin Crown, but not low servility; such was not befitting a Dragon King.

Inside there was a nervous core, something human, trembling, but at this moment it was mostly eclipsed by joy at seeing Lord Harmodius - and concern for the state of him. And pride at being here before him with Zhijian, Dragon Kings resplendent.

Meepfur
Zhijian's head jerked up, and as Tian Yue stood he moved swiftly to attention. His ears, cast forward in their excitement, trembled - all of him did. It was not fear that set him to trembling though; it was sheer excitement and overwhelming adoration that laced like lightning through his mind and body.

He dipped his quivering head before lifting bright eyes to his Lord and giving a rumbling purr to echo His and Tian Yue's. "My Lord," he said, the words full of his joy, and approached on all fours in a more dignified version of a lower wolf going to his alpha. He did not wiggle desperately nor whine, only gazed up with longing and continued to quiver, close enough to touch but not taking the liberty unless it was given.

"Fangbridle...Worldshield. You are returned." His words were ponderous, tasting the syllables over a forked tongue. It looked like the movement pained his jaw, a thin line creasing the plane of his brow.

"Splendor smiles on the faithful, the diligent. My hopes grew dim with the passing hours that my dragons," His hands dipped down, tails and wings coming forward in a inviting curl. He caressed the cheek of ear slowly, skin like dessert-kissed rock. "My sons and daughters of Highest Blood, would not break their shells and curl in the peaks of the skies again. Beneath the earth. On foam and wave. "

Sosiqui
"Never," Tian Yue hissed, low, and tilted his head hard into the carress. "To not return would be unthinkable. The Dragon claws its way up through the mortal soul, up towards you, and who would deny it or stop it? None!" The last word was a proud snarl, but it lead to that prickle of nervousness deep down.

Who, indeed. Tian Yue took a deep breath. There was something that had to be said. "My Lord, I must tell you - Tien Lung Shaiming is no more. He has become Tien Lung Tian Yue, who stands before you now with his power, memory, and devotion ready for your pledge." He spoke forthrightly. Why should he be afraid? Shaiming had chosen and thought it was for the best, so why? He pushed away the human tremor of fear deep within.

Meepfur
Zhijian purred deeply, butting his head against Destruction's hands with a sigh full of contentment as his quivering ceased. "Always will I return to You," he swore, "Without You I am nothing, have nothing. I love You, my Lord, and am whole and happy only in Your service."

As Tian Yue revealed Shaiming's choice, Zhijian began to twine carefully around his God, a cat long lonely without his Master, now making certain He was real, He was here.

Destruction halted, his tails ceasing their slow tangling with Zhijian's tail. "My dear one? Shaiming....my fair and noble lord? Gone-"

He growled, tossing his head once, and flapped his great wings in agitation. The furrow worsened, his voice lilting barely with a sorrow that echoed in nigh-empty wells. "No, but all things wither. Wither, then perish in time. So I am left, one more gone and changed that I would have kept in love and honour. So, Tian Yue, you will attempt to replace him? Of half-mortal mind, mortal love? Some part b*****d blood now with hopes of ascending the highest ranks, to be of my Dear Ones. Well, we shall see the wisdom or folly of such choosings. Crispin. Earn your name, mortal hybrid, and I will accept you. Fail, and I will strike yours, and Shaiming's, name from all monuments, books, .....memories."

There was pain there, a hollow, howling wind behind the commanding facade. Old pain, or old debate that was unknown beyond the private counsels within the Twin Crown himself. His hand on Tien's cheek dropped, leaving the skin there cold and lonely.

Sosiqui
Tian Yue stiffened, then bowed once more. "It was his choice, my Lord - Lord Shaiming penned a letter to you, explaining what he was to do. It is yours, if you will have it." The letter had been tucked away; with a quick movement Tian Yue produced it, still sealed with the glittering wax of Shaiming's personal seal.

b*****d blood... that hurt, that tore, but Tian Yue was no fool. Why should Destruction not miss Shaiming as much as he himself did? And a part of him whispered that the mourning would be different, were Creation before him instead. "His memories, emotions, and essence lives on in me, even if Lord Shaiming as he was is no longer... concious. I will do honor to you, my Lord the Twin Crown - and to his wishes for Tien Lung. If I do not do so - then let my name be stricken, for I will have failed as bitterly as Futs Lung's 'host'. Tell me what I must do, even to the ends of the world, and it will be done." He lifted his chin up and stood firm, speaking plainly - and glad he was in the dragon shape. It was easier to stand before Destruction this way.

"He had wished that I also attend to the matter of Universe. That love which was once his is now mine as well, and I intend to follow that command if you would still have me do so."

Meepfur
The matter between Harmodius and Tian Yue ran deep, and so Zhijian fell silent, settling himself at his Lord's side. A slight tremor ran through him at His threat to Tien Lung; the very idea of being cast down and forgotten struck terror into Ying Long. He would rather die than feel such shame, such heartbreak.

He looked seriously upon his fellow dragon, pained that it could come to be for his brother, but offered neither protest nor aid. His foremost loyalty would always be to the Twin Crown, whom he would not seek to contradict.

"What is Memory?!" His voice echoed down the hall like army drums, vibrating the coloured glass in its iron and solder settings. "That I have plenty of. "

His right hand continued to caress Zhijian, ruffling daintily with claws the extra fur of his ruff and just behind his ears. His left hand took the offered letter, and it peeled in quick, devouring black and a thin line of red into ash, leaving the ink floating in air. Disembodied, the words were breathed into Destruction's mouth like the incense that burned before the altars of the Dragon statues. His eyes flashed,
"Do as you see fit in the completion of the task assigned to Shaiming. Though I shall expect your task more difficult now, then it would have been. " There was some pleasure at the ends of his voice, sadomasochistic and fey.

"Zhijian, your gifts from me are at the foot of the throne, to be taken at your leisure. Do you need quartering? "
Though empty before, truly there were riches at the top of the dais now. Glittering gems, shorn pelts of high quality, glimmering mirrored bangles and two katars of marbled emerald and amber.

"I shall do so, my Lord." Tian Yue bowed again. "The task shall be completed to the best of my ability. Have you any other commands for me?"

There was a numb, tight ball in the center of his stomach that would not go away, for all the grand words he might speak; part of him was wildly, desperately jealous of Zhijian and the attention lavished upon him, but he would not let that be seen. I have to prove myself. Oh, my Lord... All of Tien Lung's longing was there, but none of the answering trust that another part of him had expected to find. Had Shaiming known this would be the case?

Meepfur
At Destruction's words he turned his head to look upon the dais and quivered again as pure joy took hold. It was the same weakness of any dragon, a love of treasures and a need to possess them, have them all for himself. His eyes glittered like the gems, staring with longing and love at the beautiful array. A hoard, the beginnings of his very own hoard, to assuage the loss of one long lost to time.

"Thank you, my Lord," he purred most deeply, leaning himself against Harmodius and arching his head and neck into His touch. "Yes, my Lord," he answered, "I would have quarters, that I may lay Your gifts there, and myself also."

Zhijian had very nearly forgotten that Tian Yue was even there now, so overwhelmed was he with happiness and with love for his Master.

"Seek, then, your door-whorled jades and the relief of ancient warriors and scouts travelling. Great mountains and falls that spray over bridges. Messengers. Fashion your room to your liking, as much as mortal craft can manage, for creation's magic is not in it."

It was like a dismissal, to them both, only it was Destruction who left them both, passing off from their presence like a dreaming walker. His hands trailed at his sides, slightly out, with fingers fanned. His chin was high, but his eyes half lidded. The many tails turned over each other slowly, and he was gone to the stairs of the other room, to his own wing.

Tian Yue was left answerless.

Sosiqui
Tian Yue followed Destruction's retreat with longing in his eyes, then drooped as soon as his Lord was gone, letting out a trembling sigh. "So I am a stranger here. So be it... I will prove myself to him and become Tien Lung worthy once again of His presence." The words were spoken mostly to himself, though at the end he raised his head and looked at Zhijian. "Thank you, at least, for your welcome. I will earn that of the Twin Crown. I should have realized." Should have, but didn't. The cold knot in his stomach felt like a stone, like ice.

Meepfur
Zhijian let out a long sigh as Destruction left, following Him with his eyes until He was out of sight. It was then that he turned back to Tian Yue at last, raising up to rub his cheek against the dragon's with a brotherly affection. To him, Tien Lung was Tien Lung, whether Shaiming or Tian Yue.

He did not call his Lord wrong, or think it, but given no order by Him went his own way. Tian Yue had not been cast down, he was still pack...and so long as he was, Zhijian would treat him as such.

Sosiqui
Tian Yue paused, surprised beyond measure that the other dragon would still treat him so... then smiled, softly. "Thank you," he murmured.

Then he shook himself, from nose to tail, and nodded to Zhijian. "There are many things I need to prepare so I can fulfill my Lord's order - but you are welcome in my halls at any time, Zhijian. ... Brother."

Meepfur
"And you in mine, brother Tien Lung," he answered with a dip of his head and the slightest of purrs. Then, finding that enough for now, he turned to the throne and ascended the stairs to inspect his treasures, his tail swaying busily behind him.

Of Silence and Need

Tian Yue lay blank and cold in his bed, still in the dragon-shape - he felt that he couldn't bear to be in human form right now. Not now, after what his Lord had said. b*****d blood. Interloper. Presumptuous. He shifted and curled into a tighter ball, tail-fan covering his nose.

True, Zhijian's graciousness had salved some of the sting, but the cut went deep - Tian Yue may not have been Shaiming, but he was still Tien Lung, with all the loyalty and longing... and all the memories. Things that he had, but no-one else did. He was the intruder, the unknown factor in a group with deep ties.

Interloper.

Was this how it was always going to be? Hopeful faces awaiting Shaiming, and then a turning away, a coldness as they did not find him? And now he had to go speak with Lucius - another love echoing through him. But Lucius did not even know him! How presumptuous, this human thing in dragon's skin-

A shudder ran all up and down Tian Yue, making the bed rattle against the floor. A part of him knew that had it been Creation's welcome, it would not have gone so - but that hadn't happened, had it? Only Destruction, implacable.

"Toki," he rasped, his voice hoarse. He would not weep, would not - but the effort in not doing was intense.

The Aoide appeared immediately, looking downcast and withdrawn. Tian Yue hadn't even told him what had happened, but the dragon crashing down through the open skylight and then curling up, tight, with ash on his feet and a command to go and pick up his discarded clothing from the room below... it was obvious what must have transpired. "My lord?" Toki replied, softly.

Tian Yue swallowed. "Bring me my - Crispin's - journal. It should be in the hoard library..."

Toki bowed. "As you wish. One moment." Tian Yue waited, staring blankly at the wall before the Aoide returned, the small spiral-bound notebook in his hands. He remembered writing this in that short, sharp stretch of mortal life...

"May, I think. Sometime in May. Regarding meeting with Lucius." Tian Yue uncurled a bit, enough to peer at the book; Toki, accustomed to dealing with dragons, stood and held it towards him after finding the page.

"Can you read it well, my Lord?"

"Yes..." Tian Yue squinted over what he knew had been, at some point, his own writing. Was still, if Destruction's judgement was true, but it didn't feel right. But the scattered words on the page that Crispin had seen fit to record jogged his own memory - that moment strangely dual, twin memories. One sharp and awed; one sad with all perception dimmed and limited from within the jewel's prison.

'If we were friends, only he remembers it. Everything beyond my first waking to this life is lost to me...whispers in dreams and visions. Perhaps we can talk sometime, and he can help me remember...'

'I hope to meet you, Crispin, and your dragon king again sometime.'

And it had been nearly a year since that day - and Tian Yue was aware of the echoing pain that had caused, as Shaiming forced himself to tend to the matter of his host rather than that of his love, assessing and training up his heir instead of seeking his consort. And now it had been almost a year...

Lucius would be right to throw those months of silence in my face when I come to him. Aloud, he said, "Thank you, Toki - leave me now, please."

Toki looked strained, as if there was something he wanted to say, but in the end the Aoide merely bowed again and withdrew back to the hoard with the notebook in hand.

Tian Yue curled tight once more, but not quite as desperate - the hard core of ice and stone that had fallen into his heart when Destruction withdrew His hand was still there, but it no longer chilled his entire being. He had to prove himself - if he failed, Destruction would not get a chance to kill him. He would do it himself... so that his false and foul blood not taint the Twin Crown's sight again.

No! It will not come to that! Shaiming trusted me! I will not fail! A faint growl escaped him, and the bed rattled lightly again.

So. Lucius must be faced - but how? No, he could not run off expecting open arms and welcoming. There was this in his favor: the lack of recognition that Shaiming had so mourned. In the beginning, at least, there would be no hope of Shaiming, and no turning away from that lack - perhaps Lucius, at least, would be able to see that Shaiming did live on in Tian Yue, though changed even as mortal Crispin had been changed. Melded into one.

The Gallery of Celestia. Shaiming's last letter had spoken of that, and now Tian Yue let his thoughts linger on the words. They did stir up memories, surrounded by stars - memories that brought a smile unbidden to his draconic face.

And, yes, if nothing else - Lucius had wished for memories, and to speak with them, hadn't he? Perhaps the intervening time would not be so small a thing if he came bearing rich recall. No, he would not come immediately with the love that burned deep in his heart. Friendship, first, but the promise of more - he would woo Lucius again if that was what it took. The memories of the first time doing so were dim and faint, so old were they, but there was an ancient sweetness around them.

And Morgan? Another cold stone. He would have to tell her about Lucius, about his feelings - but he at least had some hope that she would understand it did not lessen his love for her at all. She was not Destruction.

Yes... the plan was forming in his mind. He would go to this Gallery, and seek out memory and past for himself and Lucius both - then return, and present to Universe what he had found. And present his friendship, his warmth and willingness... perhaps, if the time was right and Lucius was receptive, his love. But that last would come only slowly, if at all; it might be that once presented with memory, Lucius would react to the lack of Shaiming with only scorn and anger towards the one who had replaced him.

The thought made Tian Yue shudder again, but this time he mastered the shiver of fear. No. I am Tien Lung, and I will do what Tien Lung said he would do - I will prove myself! I chose this. I will weather the storm-

... oh, Shaiming...

Finally, one traitorous tear slid down the side of his muzzle.

Of Clarity, Plots, and Plans

Despite having fallen asleep in dragon-form, Tian Yue found himself awake the next morning in human shape. He fumbled for his glasses, then looked up at the closed skylight above the bed, and the mottled sky visible through it. It was a constant reminder.

Still, now that he had slept and had a night's remove from the events of the day before, his head felt clearer. The interval of time made him calmer, made the emotions less frenzied and overwhelming.

Approaching Lucius with any sort of expectation of love found and returned would be foolish. For all that Tian Yue had found Tien Lung's love of Universe living in his heart as well, he didn't really know Lucius - not how he was now. The not knowing went two ways, and while Shaiming's memories held much, they were also deceptive, for the memories were eroded by time and by Fading. Only glimpses remained, and while they seemed to be more than Lucius himself knew, they were still only glimpses. New bonds would need to be forged, and the frantic love and need within had to be tamed and quieted.

Fortunately, merely realizing this seemed to calm the wild emotions, and Tian Yue got out of bed feeling more assured and less trapped in a whirlpool of his own feelings. He padded over to the bathroom and slipped into the bathtub - bless Toki for anticipating his needs! - his mind whirling not with chaotic emotions, but with plans.

The first thing, of course, would be to speak with Morgan - to tell her plainly of his feelings, but also to reassure her that he loved her no less. He thought she would understand; she'd understood everything else so far, even the strangest things.

The second would be to plot a course to the Gallery of Celestia. He had a vague idea of where it was, but he also knew that the stars had changed wildly since then, and he would have to figure out how... because this dovetailed into the third thing, which was visiting the Gallery himself. He would have to find help, as flying there as he was now would take millennia if not longer. Toki could help with the research...

Tian Yue smiled, the look filled with determination. He was not beaten yet.

Goodbye, Goodbye

Sosiqui
Of course, now that it was actually time to talk with Morgan and tell her everything... her door loomed dreadfully once more, and Tian Yue shook his head. He didn't want to hurt her, but it would hurt her worse if he didn't tell her... and she'd been so unflappable so far. But he knew this could cut to the heart if she didn't understand.

Biting his lip, he knocked on the door, then drew back, folding his hands inside the draping sleeves of the star-flecked hanfu.

mistalina13
Morgan sat at her desk working on gaming things for a lack of something better to do for the time being. She rolled a few of her dice and they came up on low numbers and she frowned. The knock came only a moment after. "Come in." She scribbled a note down and turned in her chair in time to see the door open.

Paint was settled on her desk, near the small pot of flowers chittering happily and fluttering his wings.

Sosiqui
"Love?" Tian Yue poked his head in, around the side of the door. "Can I come in?" There was a seriousness around him that made it plain this wasn't a visit just for fun.

mistalina13
She brightened up when she saw who had come to visit. "Of course..." Then she noticed his expression. Something must have happened. And she hoped it wasn't bad. She got up to greet him properly once he came in; a hug and then rocking up onto her toes to give him a little kiss.

"So, what has brought you here to see me today?"

Sosiqui
"Some things I have to tell you... being Tien Lung is hard," Tian Yue admitted, letting himself lean into the hug and the kiss both, before gently disengaging and leading her over to sit next to him on the bed. "I saw Lord Harmodius - Destruction - yesterday. He was... not pleased that Shaiming was gone... and that I presume to be one of His Dragon Kings..." He turned away from her then, unable to help it. The feelings of shame and presumption were somewhat faded by the passing of time, but it still cut deep to say it.

mistalina13
Morgan had taken his hand when they sat down on the bed and she squeezed it gently when he looked away. "Have to prove yourself then?" She looked over at him and frowned slightly. The Dragon seemed uneasy and that made her a little nervous as well.

Sosiqui
"Yes, exactly... Morgan, before I go any further - I love you. Okay? No matter what else, I love you and I will never give you up, or love you any less than I do at this moment... no matter what else happens, this will always be true. Can you understand that?" There was an odd, desperate look in Tian Yue's eyes.

mistalina13
That look only succeeded in making her more nervous, but she did mange to find her voice. "I do, and what I feel for you will never change either." If he was like this something must be wrong or at the very least had changed.

Sosiqui
"I hope so... but, listen. Um." Tian Yue gathered up his resolve, then sighed. "Before... Lord Harmodius charged Shaiming to tend to his consort... Tien Lung has loved Universe for ages of men... and because of that order..." He shook his head. "Shaiming passed many things on to me when we became one... and I've realized that one of them is that love for his consort."

He gave Morgan an anguished look, begging her to understand. "I love you dearly, deeply... but Shaiming has passed down a similar love for Lucius, the God of Universe... and I can't deny either of them..."

mistalina13
It took Morgan several moments to process what she heard, even as nice and logical as it was. Tian Yue loved Lucius and he loved her. All neat and logical...but logic rarely applied well to where emotions were concerned. Despite her silence though, she didn't look away from him or let go of his hand.

She squeezed his hand again and scooted closer to lean against him. "It makes sense, besides you can't help who you love." The words were only a little above a whisper; she couldn't help the stab of jealousy she felt, but she refused to let it creep into her voice.

He can't deny either of them...but his love for Universe was far older, did that mean it was stronger too?

Morgan tried to force the little voice of doubt from her head.

Sosiqui
"But I love you, too - neither more than the other... I know Shaiming promised you something..." Tian Yue embraced her and held on, like a drowning man to a life raft. "I... don't expect you to... understand or..." His voice cracked. "It's one of those god-things that... doesn't make sense... but..." He swallowed. "I don't want to lose you! But I can't disobey my Lord's command. I need to be Tien Lung, for Shaiming's sake... for your sake..."

mistalina13
Morgan couldn't find anything to say, for once she was speechless. She snuggled into his embrace and buried her face in his shoulder, slipping her arms around him.

Yes, he needed to be a god, as he was meant to be, but she needed him too. Godhood and Dragon King aside, in her mind he was still her beloved, her Knight. She would just have to learn to share.

Sosiqui
"Oh, Morgan..." Tian Yue rocked slightly, leaning into her and letting his cheek brush hers. "I love you so much... you're amazing... thank you for trusting me." He took another deep breath. "It may be that it all comes to nothing. Lucius knows nothing of his past, and he may not be interested in Tien Lung as he is now, and all I will offer is friendship and be glad of it. But... you had to know, in case... I couldn't keep anything from you. It's something I must do." His expression turned from relief to sharp determination. "I'm not sure if you can understand the bond between the gods - between the Dragon Kings - and the Twin Crown... I didn't really understand it before experiencing it myself. If I cannot satisfy His desires, I may as well throw myself into one of those stars going nova. But I will prove myself."

mistalina13
Morgan nuzzled his throat lightly and gave him a gentle squeeze before turning her head to look up into his eyes. "I may not understand such things, but I believe in you, Tian Yue, my lord Dragon."

She smiled softly and drew back an arm from around him and reached up to brush his bangs away from his eyes. "I believe in you and I love you very very much."

Sosiqui
"Thank you," he repeated, smiling, then sobering once more. "I wish I could stay here with you and prove everything I told you, over and over - but the truth is, I have to go... Destruction ordered me to follow the command he gave to Shaiming, and his words override everything else. I am going to a place called the Gallery of Celestia to try and find some answers to the questions Lucius must have..."

mistalina13
Leaving? Her expression saddened, despite the fact that it was something he couldn't disobey. How long would he be gone? Was it safe? Was he going alone?

Despite her worries all the said was, "I'll miss you, beloved.." She shifted again and leaned up to give him a little kiss again. "Just promise you'll return safely."

Sosiqui
"It might take two weeks, maybe less... possibly more, but I doubt it. It depends on if I can find transport or not. The Gallery is in outer space, light-years from here." Tian Yue made a face. "I've been making star charts and working from Shaiming's memories... but it's not easy. Destruction has eaten so many of the stars. Old friends."

mistalina13
Morgan nodded, frowning slightly and cuddled close again while she still had the chance to, still trying to sort through her jumbled thoughts. "In the past it must have been a beautiful place then..." She nuzzled his throat again and sighed softly.

Sosiqui
"I remember... little things. Flickers of arches and stars. Not much." Tian Yue's forehead creased in thought. "There's so much I don't understand. I can hardly take it all in."

mistalina13
"In time, beloved, I'd imagine you'll understand." Morgan couldn't fathom what sort of memories Shaiming could have left him with, so she'd just do her best to support him in his path and decisions. She smiled faintly and breathed in his scent, while she she still wrestled with the little voice of doubt.

Sosiqui
"In time... yes." Tian Yue pulled her close. "You know, Shaiming thought you might have been called here from Earth because a god or goddess thinks you're perfect... perhaps someday you'll be a goddess too, and we can build up our own heaven." He grinned, cheeky.

mistalina13
Morgan giggled, "If that is the case, I could only hope for one as kind as Shaiming was to you." She sighed whistfully and kissed his cheek. "Though, if I ever am...that sounds like fun."

Sosiqui
"Fun... sort of... stressful right now, mostly." Tian Yue bit his lip. "Better once I've proven myself to my Lord. Maybe then it'll be fun again, like it was when we went flying." He grinned, sheepishly. "For now, I'm just... making plans. If Toki brings back the information I sent him out looking for promptly, I want to leave tomorrow or the next day. Go and do this as fast as I can. I can't afford to wait, or to be gone for very long."

mistalina13
"Toki will be back before you know it." Morgan knew it was true, but it made her a little sad that meant he'd leave sooner; then again it meant he'd be back sooner as well. She smiled faintly, nodded and reached up to run her fingers through his hair. "Of course, beloved."

Sosiqui
"Maybe. Then again, maybe it'll be like that one time with the water when we gamed that first time..." Tian Yue's grin was brighter that time, and a bit wicked - that was a good memory. "You'll have to try really hard to top that reward at the end of a campaign."

mistalina13
Morgan blushed faintly. "I could think of a few things." Her expression turned playful as well and she laced her arms around his neck and kissed him lightly. "I'm sure I could..."

Sosiqui
"Could you?" Tian Yue grinned again, and tickled the tip of one of her ears lightly with one claw.

mistalina13
Morgan tilted her head and kissed his neck lightly, then drew back to look into his eyes. "How about me, for starters?"

Sosiqui
Tian Yue grinned wickedly, and pulled her close.

"Oh look - I think I failed my willpower save."

A Meeting of Minds

XiaoRen
Having met Zhijian, Gianfar decided to seek out the other Dragon Kings as well. He had not expected to see Zhijian, and their first impressions had been colored by the Age, dark and aggressive. He had been anxious over Revei, distracted. Now he was prepared.

He wanted to know everything about the Dragon Kings. It was a knowledge he had never possessed, a wine that had never passed his lips, and an old and rare one at that. He found himself with goosebumps as he approached the door that Zhijian had said belonged to Shaiming and his host, Crispin. He knocked with his staff.

Sosiqui
The knock made Tian Yue jump - he'd been immersed in reading, research and star triangulation. The celestial globe lay on the desk in front of him, and there were notes everywhere as he tried to figure out how the stars had shifted since... well, since then, ages and ages of mortal men ago.

"Who on earth...?" Morgan never knocked, she didn't need to, but he'd never had another visitor before.

He was saved answering the door, however, by Toki; the Aoide emerged from the other room and arrowed straight towards the door. It took only a moment to measure the stranger standing outside as a deity; Toki executed a graceful bow. "Be welcome to the home of Tien Lung. I am Toki; may I ask your business?"

Tian Yue made a face, and got up, walking over to the door and gently putting one hand on the Aoide's shoulder, pushing lightly aside with a wry smile before looking at the visitor himself. It... was not someone he knew, which was surprising.

"My servant here is a bit... over-formal," he said, wryly. "I am Tian Yue... welcome, sir....?" The last part trailed off into a question.

XiaoRen
Gianfar looked perfectly nonplussed as an Aoide answered the door. There were...fake rabbit ears on the boys head. But he was as gracious as any butler of high society. He was so fixed on the ears for a moment before he could look at the person beside the Aoide.

When he did, it was another surprise. He had expected a host, named Crispin. The Edelsteine before him was a full head taller than he, with regal bearing, and a dragon's tail. The glasses on his face caused a pang of vanity in Gianfar, who had lost his own. This Edel had not introduced himself as Shaiming, so he must be a morph, a friend of Shaiming's and Crispin's perhaps.

"I am Gianfar, the star of Knowledge. Which is a little funny, because I think I may have come to the incorrect rooms. Tell me, where will I find the boy Crispin?"

Sosiqui
And that was another surprise. Tian Yue raised both eyebrows, then smiled. "You're looking at him - or as much as is left. Crispin and Shaiming merged recently, and I am now Tien Lung... though I am more like host than dragon. It was his choice to share me into his power more fully and enjoy for himself a long and final rest."

XiaoRen
A fascinating morsel of information already! The god could purposefully give himself over as ambrosia, to be consumed by the host that he might become divine. He tapped his lip, eyes wide and joyful. His wings fluttered, soft in sound as they were in texture.

"That is wonderful!" he said, though whether he was congratulating Tian Yue on his morph, Crispin on his continued existence as a new being, or merely exclaiming at the novelty of the situation was unclear.

He walked into the room feeling giddy. He was glad of his somber, ornate dress, these pompous university robes he'd found. It would help him to be grounded, to act seriously.

The sight of the starcharts was another wave of curiosity and euphoria. It took a mind both expansive and precise to work with such a thing, someone learned. He saw the marks that Tian Yue had been making of his calculations, and fluttered his wings again, wanting to go see if they were correct. But that would be rude.

"Tian Yue. It is my distinct pleasure. I hope to meet all of the dragon kings, and you are the second. Zhijian told me where to find you, but he was not aware of your change. I suspect he spends his time sleeping in the throne room." He could not hold back, "Tell me...this globe, what is your task with it?"

Sosiqui
Tian Yue trailed the other deity in, surprised, but pleased by the other's reaction. He waved one hand at Toki in a gesture of dismissal; the Aoide bowed and went back into the other room. "Zhijian, huh... well, I'm glad he did," he offered, even if he wasn't entirely sure who his visitor was, yet.

The question, though, made him bite his lip. "I'm trying to find a place from my distant past. I have... business at the Gallery of Celestia, but I don't want to fly off into the heavens without some kind of idea of the celestial drift since the last time I followed the stars to reach it." If any of my faithful signposts are left, he thought, a bit sour. Still, he smiled pleasantly. "My pleasure as well - ah, I don't think I caught your name?"

XiaoRen
Gianfar was as absent minded as Tian Yue that he no more remembered having given his introduction than the other did. Everything else was more important.

"Oh, I'm dreadfully sorry. Gianfar. Knowledge." His eyes scanned the globe for the constellation of Draco, what was left of it. "I used to be right...here" he pointed to an empty spot in the dragon's belly. "I died with my star." His voice was forlorn, not so much at his past death, but at the memory of his star and his dragon, who had not returned. "I understand, in part at least, Shaiming's actions. In my past life, I chose to limit myself. I was Knowledge, omniscience. I was a distant and terrible god. The only thing I did not understand was what it was to be limited, to be a being with one perspective, to be able to learn. I was jealous of the other gods, so I asked Harmodius if he would change me, contain me. He was generous, and I was reborn as a lesser diety, part of a pantheon. Each was a trinity - god, star, and dragon. One being could not exist without the other. We were mortal. When my star reached the end of its long life, so did I. And here I am, reborn again. I fear now that my host is gone, as I come nearer my full power, that I will be as I once was. Oh, I'm sorry, I am going on." He interrupted himself, running a hand through his now shoulder length mess of silver waves.

"It is true, the stars have changed position. I know some of the new movements though, having flown through them since my rebirth. And I know where Gallery of Celestia used to be... Perhaps I could be of aid to you." He knew that Tian Yue could make his charts without his aid, but the prospect of observing and learning with someone else was tempting. He still felt the lonliness of the dark reaches, the empty university, his dusty rooms.

Sosiqui
"It's a pleasure to meet you, Gianfar," Tian Yue said warmly, offering the other god a smile. Something about his words tickled faintly at his oldest memories. "Stars, dragons... I remember, barely... Tien Lung is the celestial dragon. It is likely that I knew of that pantheon, if it consisted of two things that I love, but the specifics have all eroded away." He shook his head, disappointed.

However, he perked up again at the mention of help. "Would you?" he asked, eagerly, and for an instant his tail wagged almost like a dog's. "I don't think I'd be in any danger of getting irrevocably lost, but it could be really inconvenient if I got anything wrong. Please!" He gestured happily at the globe, and his notes. "Um. They're a little messy."

XiaoRen
There was a rare kinship of minds that Gianfar felt between them. Tian Yue had a shy, awkward bearing about him, despite his size and strength, that put Gianfar at ease. Had he not shed his usual mantle of stern reserve the moment he entered, and spoken to Tian Yue of deeply personal things?

"I would be delighted to help you." He said, sounding it. "Eroded inscriptions and hastily scratched notes may be equally difficult to decipher, but if there is no rosetta stone for student essays, at least there are more of them to study. Find me a hand I cannot read and I'll eat my staff."

He joked with a straight face, and began to sort through the piles of papers in front of him, to see how much ground Tian Yue had already covered.

Sosiqui
"I was - well, in my mortal life - a student, and my handwriting was never too bad." Tian Yue smiled. This was far better than his reception with any other deity had been. "I've been up most of the night trying to make sure my calculations are right... it's a very important matter." He bit his lip. "The Twin Crown has placed high value on my... performance," he said, after a moment.

The globe was currently set to today's date, and a star chart matching it had been drawn on one piece of paper. It was littered with X marks crossing out the stars that were dimmed or worse.

XiaoRen
He picked up a fountain pen and the starchart with X's on it.

"I have flown this way," he traced a line on it with his finger, "the path from Gaia through the constellation seen from here as Spurca, to where Antares used to be." He gave a little wince, his face going a bit pale. He had not told Tian Yue that he made the flight in search of his old friend, Scorpio, whose star had been Antares. If he had found him, he would have had the courage to go on to the Eridanus. The Heavenly River had been the seat of that pantheon, where the court, and his University had been. If any Draconigenae remained, they would be there.

"Many stars were missing. Beta Spurca..." He crossed that one out on Tian Yue's starchart. "Theta Lupus." Scritch. "Sigma Scorpio." Scritch. "Lesath." Scritch. It was a tally of the fallen. A wartime list, read aloud to those who had stayed behind, death becoming real only as the name was uttered.

"Antares." Scritch.

He paused, taking a deep breath. "Forgive me, this is more difficult than I expected."

Scorpio's star had been a dustfield, a new nebula forming. Gianfar had flown aimlessly, after that, not going on to the Eridanus. His erratic path would serve Tian Yue well, if he could get himself together to continue his observations.

"Tell me," he asked, hoping for distraction. "What is at the Celestial Gallery, that it is so important to the Twin Crown for you to reach it with haste and accuracy?"

Sosiqui
Gianfar was not the only one affected by the scratched-out stars; Tian Yue winced inwardly with every name. Some of them had had... friends? related to them? Some dim memory there, of beings held close associated with stars... but he brushed it aside. His focus now had to be the Gallery. "Thank you," he murmured. "This is... very valuable..."

A pause, after Knowledge's question. Now it was his turn to take a deep breath. "Memory. It was my... Shaiming's... no, my retreat and temple. With Universe. Lord Harmodius expressed... displeasure at my being Tien Lung." A touch of bitterness, there, that he could not cover even as he cringed at the blasphemy. "He had requested that Tien Lung tend to the matter of his consort, and that duty has passed to me. I must prove myself to Him... and I also wish to bring some memory back to Lucius as well. And... friendship, if he will have it." He left the rest unspoken; it was too confusing for him to understand, far too much to explain.

XiaoRen
"Memory," Gianfar said, letting the word hang in the air for a moment. He sighed. "Our pasts are large behind us, weighing us down. And yet the burden will be there, etched into our being, whether we know the shape of it or not. So we must learn it, before we can move on. I am encouraged that Shaiming chose to become a new being, in you. It was wise. Lucius is a perfect example of being trapped by a past that one cannot bring back, nor break free from." The Twin Crown himself was a better example, but it seems unwise to speak so of him before one of his closest guard. He had made that mistake with Zhijian.

"As a new being, though you shoulder the duties of the past for this now dysfunctional family, you can do so with fresh thoughts, a mind uncluttered. Don't worry. I don't know what the Twin Crown's expectations of you are, but you have in you the potential to fulfill what his expectations should be."

He continued to mark stars from the chart, not needing to check the celestial globe for reference. He recalled his flight well enough.

"I can't help you with much more than this chart though. I remember nothing of the Dragon Kings. Actually, that's why I came to meet you. To learn." He smiled. "So you used to share a temple with Lucius?" That implied a lot. "And were Aristogeiton's guard?" He was not sure he understood Tian Yue clearly, but then Tian Yue looked a bit confused himself.

Sosiqui
"Thank you... that's what Shaiming thought." Tian Yue felt relief, and also surprise at being so succinctly understood. Well, he's not Knowledge for nothing. "I hope that both your thoughts are correct, in the end - and that those thoughts and my actions will be enough to satisfy the Twin Crown. I want to-" He bit off the rest of the sentence sharply there, and moved on. "The last time we spoke with Lucius, he could not remember the ancient past, only the recent. Maybe the first can break the second."

He watched quietly for a moment as Gianfar continued to make markings on the chart. "Share a temple and more, if what the feelings of Tien Lung and those memories I have from Shaiming are correct," he said, wryly. "I want to bring back something more substantial, if the Gallery still exists."

Aristogeiton, though... that name sparked a faint fizzle in his memory, but nothing more, and he shook his head with a sigh. "I remember that name... a... mortal loved by the Twin Crown but... I do not know if Tien Lung had dealings with him beyond resting beyond his coils in Lord Harmodius' embrace."

XiaoRen
Soon Gianfar had made all the marks he could based off of recent personal observation, the rest would be doing as Tian Yue was doing, and using the celestial globe.

"So by duties to the consort, you mean to Lucius?" Gianfar asked. He was surprised at the pique of curiosity in himself, not wholly academic. Lucius's host and his own host had been lovers, though that broke off once they began to morph. The initial closeness had changed into a pleasant acquaintance between the two gods.

Lucius had changed during his long absence, his flight of mourning and empty searching through the starfields. Gianfar had watched the smoke and flash of great wars from the distance of the stars, on his return, wondering what it might mean. Well, they all knew clearly enough now. Lucius and he were likely nothing to each other anymore, unless he made overtures to befriend him again. Still, Gianfar was curious. He had felt close to Lucius once, and this Tian Yue had apperently been his lover, in a past life.

"To help him remember, would it not be wise to bring him to the Celestial Gallery in person? I hear that he still haunts the shop. It cannot be good for him to remain here."

Sosiqui
"Yes, Lucius - to be frank, I'm not entirely sure what Lord Harmodius meant when he said 'deal with the matter of your consort', but Shaiming has - had - some ideas, so I follow his lead." Tian Yue nodded, then looked out the nearest window at the sky.

"As for bringing Lucius there - perhaps someday, but the last time we spoke to him he remembered nothing of us. He has no reason to go somewhere he doesn't remember with someone he doesn't know - and I have to keep reminding myself that despite the old memories and emotions, I don't really know him either. Not as he is now."

XiaoRen
"I'm afraid I don't know him as he is now either. I should make a point of it." Gianfar said sadly. "Still, if it would please you, I would try to convince him on the friendship we have had in this lifetime, to go with you. Mostly because I'm sure he could use a change. He shouldn't be here. And of all the Edels I've met, you seem sensible, earnest, and sweet in a way that could only do him good."

Gianfar seemed to have made up his mind, and spoke with authority. He was so used to giving advice that he did not think whether it was asked for or accepted.

Sosiqui
Tian Yue actually blushed then, and his smile was shy. "Thank you," he said, earnestly. "I only hope he'll feel the same way. For his sake, and my sake... when I think about it, I can only find the stumbling blocks. That it's been too long since we last talked, that I'm not the same Tien Lung I was before... that he may see Lord Harmodius' order as the only reason I came to him, rather than one of many." He shook his head. There was also Morgan, but that... hopefully Lucius would understand that as well, but he feared it the most. "But you give me some hope... I would be grateful for it, and for your friendship with him to resume, as well."

Though, that was the other thing. "You know where he is? When we saw him last, he was just on the roof of this building, and I doubt he lives there all the time..."

XiaoRen
Gianfar was touched by Tian Yue's blush. Normally he wasn't so sentimental, but this talk of choosing the present over the past had him thinking about Revei.

"The last I saw Lucius he still resided in his rooms here at the shop, have you looked for him there? I have heard that his wings are injured, so he is unlikely to travel." He answered gravely.

Gianfar liked to discuss serious things, rather than trivial. Though their conversation covered topics of sadness and forboding, still the relish of pithy talk was on Gianfar's face. He had spent too much time alone in his thoughts.

"I enjoy talking with you. It is early to presume friendship, but I wonder if, as a fellow scholar, I could impose upon you for a favor?"

Sosiqui
"In his rooms..." So close? Tian Yue hadn't thought Universe would be so close. The thought gave him butterflies in the stomach, instantly. "I will seek him there, then, when it's time. Thank you."

For a moment he was lost in thought, then refocused on Gianfar as he spoke again. He smiled. "Whenever you are free, I would love to try and forge friendship with you - but for now, what favor? I can't promise anything since my orders from the Twin Crown must take priority, but..."

XiaoRen
He nodded in response to Tian Yue's words on friendship, then said, "It need not interfere with your duties. When we have finished mapping your journey, would you let me borrow your Celestial Globe? It can tell me if any of my old friends' stars still burn. Also, you will soon traverse the starfields in person. Would you keep watch for any of my old pantheon? It pains me to think I may be the last of my race...their race. I must correct myself, for I am one of them no longer. Even if all my old friends have succumbed to time, there might be new stars with guardian dieties like them. So if you see any dragons or winged gods flying...well, would you let me know? I should make the trip myself. I began to, but found I lacked the courage." he finished sadly.

Sosiqui
"Of course - I think with your help I'm finished now, so you can take it now if you like... see, now I'll have to see it again, to get it back." Tian Yue grinned, and lifted the globe carefully, holding it out to Gianfar.

"And - yes, of course again. Though I think I'll travel using more... mortal means of getting around, since flying sixty miles an hour doesn't do much to eat up the light-years." He made a face. "Still, I can search for you while I am there, briefly."

XiaoRen
Gianfar took the globe from Tian Yue and cradled it against his chest. "Thankyou. That means a lot to me." He tucked his staff under his arm, and with this unwieldy arrangement looked helplessly at the door. "Since your path is charted, I imagine you will want to be on your way soon, so I won't keep you. I won't tell you that I'll take good care of this artifact of yours, in hopes that you will worry and hurry to my door as soon as you return."

The truth was, he'd rather stay. Knowledge stood in fear of his own power. The complete list of those living and those dead was tucked in the curve of his arm. He had quailed before, choosing not to fly to the Eridanus. He feared the Celestial Globe as much, but had no excuse not to use it. He would know. Soon, he would know. He didn't want to be alone in that knowledge, but he doubted he'd be able to remain academic about it. It would be rude to impose on Tian Yue if he was going to really mourn.

Sosiqui
Tian Yue laughed at that last, then sobered. "Thank you so much for your help - I'm sure my journey will be that much smoother. I will do what I can to repay you, and hopefully what I find will be good for both of us." Tian Yue rose and walked with Gianfar to the door, as Toki peered at them from the other room.

"I'll come to you the moment I return, with whatever I find. Good night - friend." He smiled and opened the door.

Whirl Spin Twirl

Gianfar had gone, Toki had not yet returned, Morgan was likely asleep, and Nebula was still nowhere to be found. Tian Yue paced awkwardly through his quarters, wanting to do something but with nothing to actually do. Is this how Toki feels nearly all the time? What a horrible thought.

At least Morgan had... well, probably not approved, but she hadn't left him as he had been so afraid. If there had been a feel of desperation to their lovemaking, he was trying firmly to ignore it.

Thus far, being Tien Lung had brought only complications. A new old lover to trouble his beloved. A new old master rejection, interloper. A shattered past to slice and confuse his future... and all this time spent barely in control, treading water and getting nowhere, but managing to keep his head up. He was exhausted. And now he was alone and he had to think about it again... and drown a little more. The fact that Zhijian had not rejected him and that Gianfar had come to him with joy felt distant and strange now, as if they had happened to someone else.

Who am I? I'm so tired of this... so tired... Tian Yue walked over to the 'throne', hesitated, and moved to the couch instead, flopping down on it and pulling a pillow to his chest. But there was something underneath it, something long and purple - the plush dragon he no, Crispin had bought, amused at its resemblance to Shaiming.

He tossed the pillow onto the floor and held the dragon close, curling up around it - well aware that the motion was childish, but not really caring.

I need to find something - some kind of answers. Some kind of balance. Something. Anything. Or... Or Destruction would in his turn destroy him. If he didn't break on his own first.

Were you... wrong? Shaiming?

Were you?
