Bul's omission made Riley perk, and as he murmured his goodbyes, Riley moved up to speak.
It was, perhaps, time to remind everyone of why they were truly here.
Red was a stubborn, reckless, determined professor. Riley's voice emitted suddenly, without any warning of a beginning to her speech. She taught us many things, while she was here. But no lesson was more important, or more easily misunderstood, than her last words. Her hand reached out, took Bul's, and squeezed it softly.
We are Halloween and we cannot die. Riley repeated, a bit more clinically than the rest may have cried it out. Yet, we stand here at a memorial to the very voice that spoke these words. A funeral for the deceased. And I admit, it is not hard to see why those words may fall short.
Riley's hands rested on the box, where students were still leaving offerings. Our professor, our mentor, our fellow citizen of Halloween has left this place. But she has not left us. Within each one of you here tonight, whether you have met her, or not, she lives on. Your words, your actions, and your choices will take her with you on those steps of the future that we have yet to stride. She never once gave up on a fight. Will you? Her hand reached up and pulled away her hood, as her eyes searched the crowd accusingly. Will you? Will any of you? Or will you live on, keep fighting, and one day pass your wisdom on as she did?
Her hand closed into a fist. YOU are Halloween. Red sacrificed her body so that you may live - but no one, not even those filthy humans, could have taken her memory from us. Now, you understand Red's words. Now, you feel her still right where her death put her, in each and every one of your hearts, and your determination to survive.
Riley pushed the box closed. And now you will say it, with me, right now. And you will understand that her words, her deeds, her very presence lives within us all.
WE ARE HALLOWEEN. Her fist slammed against the box. AND WE. CAN. NOT. DIE.

He listened quietly to his Mistress's speech, a smile twisting on his stitched lips as he hefted his shovel from where he had leaned it against a tree. The hole had already been started, but there was the appearance of matters. Always leave a bit to do while people were still there to see, that's what made grave-digging the most fun.
Granted it wasn't a *proper* grave, but... he refrained from saying that to anyone.
We are Halloween, and we will never die.
The only lesson from Red he had ever retained. He wasn't so sure about it, but it must have been one of those metaphorical things he didn't quite understand.
Maybe Mistress would explain later.
As everyone made their final words, the hunchback in the red cloak limped his way over to the spot they had decided to dispose of the box of knickknacks and memorabilia, digging in deep into the earth with his shovel.

He needed that. Bul needed that more than any other thing right now was the affirmation that Riley was strong and confident and unlike the vision he had she was not feeble in any way right now. Her glow was simply inspirational. It was also pretty obvious that it was her on a scale of reasons so even without seeing her face so..
If he did have anything left in him it would be another roar of pride... but here was neither the time nor place to do such a thing. It was still a funeral after all.
And even when she did remove her hood he bowed his head in respect and watched the box as if Red were to suddenly appear from it. Apart from the pieces students took home this was the last physical evidence of her that be would ever see.
Then... it began to build. And build.
And as much as he wanted to stay quiet and respectful he could not help but roll out a long powerful howl the best he could, in a fashion more half beast than werewolf but a howl none the less.
It felt. Amazing.

She was right. For both cloaked figures, it was enough to stir up a sort of fighting spirit. A determination to not lose. To grow stronger. For Red. For their loved ones. For all of them.
"WE ARE HALLOWEEN. AND WE. CAN. NOT. DIE."
And then the figure up by the council took in a deep breath.
"VOOOOOOOOOOOOOIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIII!" he cried out while breathing a plume of flame up towards the sky.
The other cried out as well, only without the flames.

The words Riley spoke into their minds was stirring, building up a fire of hope and inspiration where there might not have been one before. Their teacher had made a great sacrifice for them and now they needed to make the best of it. Show her that giving her life wasn't in vain. The howl was what struck her most, nothing quite like a wolf's howl but similar. Her ears perked high under her hood making the points obvious as she turned toward the source of the noise.
She wanted her own voice to be heard, the urge to howl was there, to speak out and sing this battle cry that Riley had started, but the sound died in her throat before it had even formed. Clenching the red hood around herself she wondered if it was disrespectful that she was being quiet now.
More and more students were crying out, yelling out how they felt as the words Riley had spoke fueled them. Why was it that she couldn't do the same? The burst of flames made her jump, crimson eyes peeking out from under the hood. Brushing the hair from her face she focused her attention back on the box. It was no longer about the one they had lost but about facing what was to come.
"We are Halloween....and we can not die." The words were nearly whispered as compared to the commotion going on around her. Permanent death was something that she was still torn on. True someone could live on in the actions of someone else she supposed but in truth..they were gone. Halloween would live on though, with or without them. Bowing her head in respect, she pulled the cloak close before pulling away from the crowd to leave. If anything, memories lived on as long as someone was there to remember.

Glowing eyes followed the progression of one figure as they made their way from the circle, lingering there a moment before returning forward again as Riley's voice filled their minds. There was nothing gentle about it, no prelude to her speech, and the strength behind her words was both unexpected and admired. That was what they needed now, strength and unity, something to believe in and work towards. Sorrow and grief was one thing, Seiji himself still felt the stab of Red's lose, but she wouldn't have wanted them to cry for her, she'd have wanted them to fight.
His shoulders straightened, and he stood a little straighter as he watched their student council president grab his friend's hand before moving onto the box that held the memory and mementos for Red. She was right, every last forceful word she sent into their brains, and the boil could feel his resolve hardening, pain easing, with every rallying point.
He'd murmured the words before, but he yelled them now along with the voice in his head. Closed, blackened fist raising into the air. He heard Bul Howl, more beast then anything else, and he felt that same building swell of pride within himself. He didn't even bother to hold it back, but instead rose his voice along with his best friend's, Howling into the night air to echo the voice already raising around him. He howled, and it his heart gave a single shuddering beat. He felt Alive
-------
Riley's words were sudden and clear in the ghoul's head and she stiffened, clutching at the boil beside her as glowing eyes widened. She stared, unable to even to breath for a moment as that strong, confident voice rang through her mind and made thin shoulders straighten. She swallowed, easing the lump that had formed in her throat, and lifted a hand to rub at the tears that clung to her cheeks.
Overwhelmed or not, she had been weak, and as she listened to Riley's speech she was reminded of something she'd forgotten. Yes, Red's death was a tragedy, and yes they would mourn, but that was not what the were wolf had wanted from them.
She hadn't been there in her their teacher's final moments, having opted to remain behind instead of walking into what she'd considered certain disaster. Who would have known she'd come to regret that decision, even known she'd been right? There was nothing she could have done, nothing she could have said that would have made any difference, she knew that, and yet still she thought she'd made the wrong choice. She had been weak in her decision to stay behind. Smart, certainly that, but cowardly and weak. It had been the logical choice to stay behind, but it gained her nothing, no strength, no skills, nothing.
She'd given up before she'd even tried, and that was not acceptable. Not to Red, and not to her self.
Releasing the arm beside her, Hadiyya stood straighter, and exotic features were determined as she pushed the crimson hood from her face to pool around her shoulders. She listened to her peers crying out around her, howling into the night, and she lifted her voice in turn. It wasn't a howl, not really, but it didn't lack an ounce of pride of determination the others had. She would not give up again, she would run away. She would stand with her friends, and she would grow strong and move forward.
Whether she had been one in the past or not, Hadiyya refused to be the weak link any longer. She had found a purpose in that tent upon the others return. Never again would she watch her friends dying and do nothing. She would continue with the bit of training she'd gotten with cricket, and she would walk down the path of a FEARhealer.

He had heard the message as well, and followed it to the forest, curious and even a bit nervous. But once there, the purpose of this meeting was clear, and he gladly accepted the red robe and swung it around his shoulders. Pulling the hood up, he moved into the crowd, staying silent for most of the ceremonies.
But with Riley's speech and the shouts of those words, he couldn't help but join in, flinging his head back in a roar of his own.
"WE CANNOT DIE!!!
His own words echoed the others', admiring the plume of flame and almost for a moment wishing that he could make such a display.

There was sudden passion, almost anger in the words the president spoke. She would never have allowed herself such a sudden display, were these any other circumstances. This, however, called for some wanton passion.
"WE ARE HALLOWEEN, AND WE CANNOT DIE!"
It felt good. It felt right.

Willow watched as others had went up to the box but she stayed where she was just listening to the speeches her ears were low and she sighed however when Riley spoke, after who she thought might've been Bul went up to the box her ears twitched forward. Red might've been gone but there was a small whisper, "You can kick me anytime I'm down...Red..." Willow was looking towards the moon, her tail flickered.
The howls were something that she couldn't produce as she heard the others start to call, however she could bellow out a raor in honor of Red. "WE ARE HALLOWEEN AND WE CANNOT DIE!"
The tigress grinned slightly towards the box, maybe... they could eventually avenge Red in some way...

Hoods everywhere were being shed, denting the sea of crimson capes - she would have loved nothing more than to recognize at least one. She didn't have their memories. She didn't have the passion of those who spoke, or the power of the voice that rose once again in her head. She didn't have the urges of vengeance or solidarity or fortitude or...whatever drew voice after voice into audible, steadfast tribute. She didn't! And yet...
"We are Halloween." She had that. She had it, and it sounded so familiar that she knew she had said it somewhere before. Repeating it made something in the back of her brain slide back into place. The ghoul had spent months wandering in fog - why was it here, in this solemn moment, that she felt most alive?
"We are Halloween, and we cannot die."
No, not now. Not now that there was something pulling at her, niggling the back of her head with all the irritation of something important forgotten. Several somethings important, at that. The tall werewolf stepped forward, staring at the box filled with the student body's memorial to Red, and tilted her muzzle back in sudden, sonorous howl that stormed up to join the others'. There was at least one wolf here tonight - it was only fitting that she make her voice heard.

She was glad to hear others speak up, not wanting this to be a dead silent--no pun intended--memorial. Red was not a quiet woman. She wouldn't have wanted them to mope...at all. Finally Riley spoke and she looked up, quietly watching and listening to the mindflayer. Wait...fell short? Junko's brow furrowed, confused. How did the words fall short? Glowing green eyes darted from Riley to the students around them and back again. Who said anything about giving up on a fight? Why would any of them give up? They couldn't just let themselves be trapped in their own domain unable to leave to gather FEAR which they vitally needed to survive! It was they who caused fear, not who were crippled by it! Junko frowned. "Of course not. Those humans can't win. They can't lock us up like animals in a cage." She shifted uncomfortably at the very thought. Junko was unaware of the fact that may students had been locked in cages.
Riley closed the box and then promptly shouted into their heads, causing the ghoul to wince and look down at the box she had just slammed her fist on.
Someone howled.
Someone yelled.
Several students shouted.
Junko's eyes widened as she looked upon every student in turn, pleasantly shocked. What had started as something so somber had become...this. It made her heart race with excitement, a wide smile spreading helplessly o her lips. They couldn't die. They were Halloween. Her hair twitched and writhed, twirling and curling in reaction to the joy Junko was feeling. This was why Riley was their president; the mindflayer was able to coerce the students to take pride in their home and shout at the top of their lungs in the middle of the weeping forest. She couldn't help it, she raised her arms and bounced excitedly on her toes, her hair also raising and puffing up around her with pride.
"WE. ARE. HALLOWEEN!" She shouted, laughing after and attempting her own howl. It sounded more like a cheer than a howl but she tried nonetheless. They couldn't die. And she was right, Red couldn't die either.

Voices rose around him, and Seiji could feel a smile sliding along his face despite the event. This was what Red would have wanted. Not overwhelming grief and despair, but unity and pride. They would not hide, they would not run or cower, they would grow stronger, and they would face those Jack damned humans and make them pay for everything they had done to them. It was a purpose, and the ghost was going to cling to it, strive for it, and do everything in his power to make it happen.
He Watched as his Ghoulfriend joined in the cry, echoing her as she attempted to howl, and laughing as the sound died in his throat. They were Halloween, fear itself, how could they have ever forgotten that?
As politely was possible he made his way through the crowd towards the front to stand on the fringe, smiling at Junko, at all the council. This memorial had been about closure, and he dare say they had found it. At least he had, and those that had joined in the shouting. They had needed this, all of them.

She couldn't howl, not like that; her voice wasn't made for it. But there was something she could do. A low susurrus of whispers began in the shadows in the clearing, rose into a multitude of tiny, breathy voices, sounding quietly but on all sides:
"we are halloween. and we cannot die."

He almost hadn't come. It had been hard enough to try to gather some semblance of understanding of the events of the field trip. He still wasn't sure that he could stomach it. Though the Cerberus could be cocky at times, he wasn't irreverent or disrespectful enough to believe that his attendance would have helped prevent what happened. But his absence still hurt. While the classmates that he cared about were going through some of the most unimaginable trials, he'd been holed up in his cozy dorm.
It wasn't fair. None of this was fair.
He'd kept his distance from the other students. He wasn't sure if he should be here. He hurt at the loss of his teacher, but surely it wasn't comparable to what the other students were feeling.
Ultimately, he was here for Red. When it came down to it, he'd decided, this wasn't about him. It wasn't even about his classmates, really. It was about honoring a teacher that had been more brave than he could ever imagine. A soft whimper emerged from the darkened hood of his cloak, and he tossed his head back to howl. It was a pitiful, weak puppy's howl at best, but he was determined to join them this time.

She listened in silence to the others talk, she didn't have speeches, she didn't have pretty words. Just... confusion and sadness. But as she listened she remembered and... she resolved. That ceremony... it had broken a part of her that had held a dream for so long. She hadn't realized it but she'd been lost since she came back... but now, now she knew what she was going to do. The how was fuzzy and she knew it wouldn't be easy by far but... it was a path. And a better one than before.
Thank you Red.
As the other's lifted their voices in their cry she finally broke her silence, calling out with them, "WE ARE HALLOWEEN AND WE CANNOT DIE!"
There was a smile on tear stained lips now, this was what they had needed.
Thank you, thank you so much.
