"Well, I think that's probably how most people still feel about it," Tennessee admitted. None of the Southerners would try to argue for slavery these days, but every now and then someone would halfheartedly mention the legality of secession, the tariffs or one of the other nit-picky things that had added to the list of grievances back then. It was more just something to talk about than anything, but there were quite a few issues they still felt like they had been right on even if the North had been able to take the moral high ground about the root problem of the war.
"I guess the important thing is tryin' to learn what to look out for next time somethin' bad happens like that," Tennessee said with a small shrug.

"I would hope so if they were part of the Union," Wisconsin could be quite facetious at times and it shown when he said that. While there may have been other reasons alongside with the issue of slavery in many's eyes, the Badger state only saw one thing. Excuses for injustice, justifying their actions as they would eventually change on their own, when they had to change immediately.
Wisconsin perhaps at first in those tense days before the war, came off nothing more than an obnoxious little fly who seemed to buzz around the more imposing Illinois who while was not completely unsympathetic at first, was still equally disapproving when push came to shove. It was an interesting contrast from now when Wisconsin dripped the states name like filth and poison, from those days where the honor of Illinois would be so much questioned and the Badger State would be immediately there defending the other.
Both the states changed greatly from then, that was clear. With Illinois it was fairly obvious, having one of the most influential cities in the United States - and it reflected as well in his attitude. Wisconsin ... well, this whole meeting proved that he changed as well.
"...But yeah, that is I guess the only thing ya can do, and just hope the one thing to hit ya isn't the thing that breaks ya!" He said with muffled laughter.
(OOC: Hope you don't mind me adding some information about Illinois or painting a picture of the state. I have some headcanon about it in a way due to looking deeply in it's history.)

Tennessee smiled and started to say something until his cell phone began ringing again. It was a different ring tone than the one when Missouri called and it instantly set the Volunteer State on edge.
"It's one of my sisters," he said with the same graveness he might report an enemy invasion. "They know about me gettin' lost." He shifted nervously.
"I'm drivin' so there's a reason not to answer, right? It's not that I'm avoidin' them. I'm just tryin' to focus on the road," Tennessee said unconvincingly. As much as he loved the Carolinas they were among the pushiest of his neighbors about lecturing him and trying to tell him what to do. They could be a little overbearing on their baby brother and there had been more than one incident where he'd literally snuck under tables and around people to escape from meetings so he could avoid them ganging up on him afterward.
(Go right ahead. Feel free to do whatever you want with any Midwest state. I'm sure you have a better idea of what to do with them than I ever will.)

Wisconsin in a way, saw the dynamic between Tennessee and who he deemed as his family. It was fascinating in a way, and almost alien because of the knowledge of the midwestern states were not nearly as close. The former northwest territory, had little connection with each other at times and as far as Wisconsin was concerned - likely too self centered with their own ambitions to ever take serious note of their neighbors except under special circumstances.
Of course, he also had a blind spot. He was exactly like them in that respect.
"I can imagine they're spreadin' it around now, huh?" The Badger state tried to hold back the laughter and big grin growing on his face. It was actually endearing and different to see states so close like a family.
(OOC: Haha, yes. Their dislike of each other is definitely mutual although Wisconsin's is a bit more intense. I might actually put some character notes on how perceive the states in the other thread. )

"I bet everyone knows by now," Tennessee groaned. There were no secrets in the South. The region was just as bad if not worse than any small town any other state could imagine. Everybody knew everybody else's business and history and they kept tabs on each other almost like it was a hobby. Gossip was especially rampant in the Deep South with his own sister leading the charge. South Carolina had probably told everyone and might have even taken some creative license to make it a more interesting story.
"I'm gonna be hearin' about this for years... They only recently stopped makin' fun of me so much for not likin' to wear shoes when I was a frontier," Tennessee said unhappily. "It took them 200 years to let that one drop..."
Of course, not wearing shoes wasn't very odd for states while they were in their frontier phases. What was odd was that, as a small child, his boss and handlers had to physically force, bribe or threaten him into anything that wasn't moccasins or hunting garb. Actually keeping him dressed up nice had been an even greater challenge. At one point the half wild Southwest Territory had run straight through a State meeting barefoot and half dressed while his territorial governor tried to get him to put back on his shoes before meeting President Washington.

"Well it could be worse," he said while playing with his brown hair again, idly in thought, "I mean, a horrible sense of of direction is not too bad ya know?"
Wisconsin was trying to be optimistic in this situation, and it didn't seem Tennessee took it too harshly. In fact it seemed he was mostly relaxed and there were no things that shouldn't be touched as a bad topic, "I mean, I'm sure it might seem a bit embarassing but it could be a lot worse... "
Moving away from that topic he realized this was the place to turn to get to his home, "Turn here." That was a sudden.

Tennessee made a small, startled noise as he barely made the turn. Another car behind him blared their horn and he shot them another weird, hybrid expression of his which combined guilt and irritation. It wasn't like he was trying to cause a traffic incident but he knew it was his fault. Still, they didn't have to be so testy about it...
Once the danger had passed he glanced over at Wisconsin and returned to their conversation as if nothing had happened. "I guess not," he admitted. "Do you have anything your family teases you about?"

That wasn't intention on Wisconsin's part to do that with Tennessee however since most of the driving was fairly slow and now they were going down a country road, there wouldn't be too much traffic from here on out.
This question, took him by surprise: there was no real no states around him that he considered 'family' however he did have his fair share of teasing toward him, "Well, sometimes they kinda make fun of how obsessive I can be over certain things like my teams, but I just think they're jealous of how good they are." Well there were things they made fun of him for, but he did not want to go on about that due to how embarrassing it was.

"Is that all? Everybody has some of that," Tennessee said with a chuckle. "Being obsessed over sports is pretty normal if you ask me. I mean, I guess some of us do take it to a whole new level but it's not that odd... Except maybe Indiana..." The Volunteer State almost cringed as he recalled a time Kentucky had tricked him into asking the Hoosier about basketball. He thought that one-sided 'conversation' would never end.

"Oh no, there's other jokes too!" Wisconsin was now looking out at the scenery, at the few farms where some cows were still outside eating some grass with big areas to roam. He was glad to not live near any of those factory farms, they'd break his heart a bit too much.
"Sometimes they make some jokes 'bout me having some thin skin compared to them, but I don't know what they mean by that!" Of course he wouldn't, he always tried not to see any flaw he possibly could have and was overly defensive as it was.

"They do, huh..." Tennessee could already see where some of that might come from. Wisconsin did seem maybe a touch on the sensitive side, but they had been talking about a few tense subjects, so he decided to him the benefit of the doubt.
The Volunteer State grumbled a few swears under his breath when his phone began ringing again the tone that was apparently assigned only to his sisters. He wasn't about to pick it up just yet so long as he had excuse to avoid it, but he would need to talk to them before they decided he'd gotten himself stranded in a ditch. The very last thing he needed was for them to come looking for him.
"Oh, I never told you why I'm goin' to Missouri's, did I?" Tennessee said more than asked as his face brightened. "Missouri asked me to perform at a Music Festival. I'm supposed to do some country and a few of my early blues songs. I think I'm also supposed to do a few classic Rock and Roll ones, but it's mostly for country and blues." Now it was his turn to be the cheerful one. There was something about music which always brought the best out in the Volunteer State.

Wisconsin is known for it's obsessions, even a such of a doubt of it's sports teams, it's abilities, a comment that there is a small possibility he's not the best could lead to some awkward situations to say the least.
"Huh? Really?" His eyebrows raised, and moved his head a little bit in acknowledgement, but still wanting to watch more of the rolling grasslands, scattered forests, and semi-hilly countryside, "When do ya have to be there?"
Wisconsin had some interest in music but he was never really particularly talented in playing any instruments even with MIlwaukee holding Summerfest, "That's pretty good though, ya know? I mean, being asked to play there. Maybe when we stop at my place, I can listen to ya."

"Missouri wanted to go over the sound systems checks with me tomorrow, but there are still a few days before the festival starts," Tennessee said. "I was comin' in early so I could help out but... Well, I think it'll be ok as long as I get there in time to perform. He didn't sound worried on the phone."
Tennessee's smile could have sparkled at the invitation to play for the other state. He loved any excuse to play his guitar. "Sure, I'd be happy to," he said cheerfully. "Any particular type of music you like? I can do bluegrass and gospel, too. Just about anything is fine although I didn't care too much for the punk movement..."

Wisconsin sighed in relief, he didn't feel so guilty now inviting him over to his place, "Well, I'm pretty good with mostly anything to tell ya the truth - I don't really have skill in music, but I do like listening to it, ya know?" Eventually he he saw his home. It was a fairly modest place, an extremely old home that definitely seen much better days with an old barn next to it. Yes, much better days indeed, but at least it wasn't too horrible to look at. Perhaps it was better on the inside? "All right, there it is!" he said, excited while pointing directly to it.

Tennessee wasn't sure what he'd been expecting of Wisconsin's home but that wasn't exactly it. Of course, he'd never given much thought to what kind of house Wisconsin would live in, but Tennessee had never thought of himself as being anything like the Midwestern state. But this home didn't look too different from one he might live in himself.
He pulled up next to the house and shut off the truck as he admired the simplicity and wear of the home.
"It seems cozy," Tennessee said and he honestly meant it. He didn't like fancy things although his governor insisted he keep up a more modern and nicer looking house around Nashville for appearances sake when people visited his capital.
