Calder laughed at that. "I'm out for three. I'll be having a bad time using your way of thinking." He pointed out, and that laughing died quickly as Barth picked out his limited time frame.
"No. I'll live. Just...I don't suspect I'll be allowed to do the things I can do now at school when that time is over and I return to the clan." He loved them, but he wished he could have both worlds.

"On the contrary. I think you are bright, and charming, and have just been having a bad streak in the luck department."
At the second comment, he smiled grimly.
"Ah," he said knowingly. "Family."

Not exactly, but a clan was just as demanding. There were high expectations from his herd now, especially from his new guardian, and he knew it would shape his future. But he didn't want to get into specifics and he shook his head, waving his hands about. "Bla. I don't want to talk about this." They were supposed to be relaxing!
Calder cuddled back closer and sighed. Yes. Hair brushing. That and he had gotten a nice bit of compliments from Barth. He thought he was bright and charming? Certainly something a kelpie and backwoods bumpkin could take pride in. "Which one should I wear?" He asked, tilting the box at the multitude of hair accessories he owned.

Barth gratefully took the question as a reprieve from hair-brushing. He leaned forward over Calder to look through the accessories with a serious expression.
His own fashion sense wavered towards the dated, but his opinion on hair things was, well, non-existent. What did he like better, a flower, a dragonfly? He couldn't say.
He settled for a thoughtful, "Hmm. Well that one seems, err, swirly."

The "swirly" hair accessory was a pumpkin with a stem curling about it, and a heart-shaped leaf. Calder took the clip and closed the case, smiling at Barth. "Pumpkin it is." It was rather cute, what with it's lovely orange and greens. He wondered if Barth would like a Rose clip at some point just because Calder felt it would be both appropriate and adorable.
Glancing, he saw Barth's hands start to sag, barely moving at this point. "Thanks for brushing my hair. You did a good job. I think it's done now." Calder would do a more thorough brushing later that night. He still needed a nice shower. "Here. Can you clip this in my hair?" He asked, taking advantage of being spoiled.

Barth visibly relaxed, as if he had been released from something. He could admit he didn't mind the terms of this particular bet, and in terms of nearness and company he didn't have any complaints. But he had been starting to flag, and Calder had called it fulfilled just in time. He slowly put down the brush, and accepted the clip.
"Which side?"

"Which...Which ever side you think would look best." He tried not to look at Barth as he waited.

He ran his claws through Calder's hair, and after what seemed like a very long time, got it clipped to the right side.
"There you are," he said.
The job, as Calder had noticed, had not been all that thorough, but Barth thought that was perhaps not very important. ...He might as well ask.
"I'm not very good at resisting bets, admittedly, but...why hair-brushing?"

Calder noticed the clip was slipping a bit, but he had enjoyed the claws moving through his hair and brushing past his scalp and ears for a few moments before the clip was pressed in. Complete, Calder felt better than any 3-hour long bath could have provided him.
When Barth asked, Calder just shrugged his shoulders. "Just cause." It wasn't a thorough answer. "I used to have it done a lot, back home. Sort of something you grow up with. My parent used to do my hair, and I sometimes did theirs. Other kelpies do it for each other. It's comforting." He hadn't seen his parents in a while now. "It makes me feel better and closer to someone." He started to take a lock of his hair, trailing his hands through and combing it over and over between his fingers as he thought.
"I wouldn't trust just anyone to mess with my hair, but I like when people play with it." A kelipe's mane was one of it's many pride and joys. You didn't look very beautiful if you had gum in it or if half of it was greasily and stank of raw sewage. It just didn't attract anything aside from flies and disgusted looks.
