"Delicate sensibilities?" Pffft. Yeah. Ok. Delicate. He too dodged the path Ayame did, he just veered the opposite way. "At least I don't have a harness. What are you doing with that? Waiting for a human to mistake you for the family pet?" He laughed and took advantage of a slight downhill slope. "Need me to throw you a bone?"

Ayame rolled her eyes. “Humans made my harness. They made all the sleddog harnesses,” she said, feeling a little breathless as she tried speaking while she ran. “My tribe acts as messengers and carriers for the human village near our mountain in the winter, cause we’re stronger and faster and tougher than them and they can’t get past the snow and ice. Doesn’t make us pets, we do it cause it’s in our natures. A lot more useful than just grazing and eating their plants, Leafchewer!”

She suddenly launched herself sideways. If she’d hit another creature, the strength of that leap would have seriously hurt someone, it was that stronger. There was also a bit of forward in the leap as well as sideways; her shoulder rammed into the rolling boulder, shifting its course at the last moment so that it missed the tree trunk and continued on its way down the mountain.

“And I’m taking ten more points off your score for missing that,” she called, totally serious about the score thing.

"Pffft. You /ALL/ are a bunch of lapdogs. It's sad!" He didn't care about no damn points. They were almost at the bottom and he was ready for them to be done. He was tired. He wasn't taking this seriously anyway. (Lies.) HE didn't care if she 'won'. (More Lies) Hmph.

Ayame rolled her eyes at that. It wasn’t exactly a new taunt, or insult, as some of her kind would take such words. After all her tribe did help out humans, and their tails did bear a resemblance to the dogs that humans kept as pets. That was about where the resemblance ended though, since the rest of them was completely fox. And yea, they wore harnesses. They were actually very useful things though and made their work a lot easier. But foxes just assumed that because they had them they were owned by humans. Ayame was always tempted to point out that other foxes wore clothes and accessories made by humans too, since none of them had the motor skills to craft something like that. Did that make those foxes pets too?

The vixen suddenly put on a burst of speed and came up even with the boulder. As soon as her chest was just a little ahead of it she did a kind of leap, swinging her back legs around while her front stayed planted in the ground so that she was now facing back up the hill. The momentum carried her a little backwards, so when the rock slammed into her chest it only left bruises rather than broken bones.

Ayame let the rock push her just a bit down the hill before digging her claws in, grunting a little at the pressure on her newly bruised skin. With a final crunching sound both sleddog and rock came to a halt. She shook her bangs away from her face and fixed Rui with a level stare from her chocolate-colored eyes. “I’d be careful with insults. Bandying stuff around and poking fun is one thing, but insulting my entire breed and what we do is another.”

She gave her muscles a heave and sent the rock rolling around her again. It hadn’t even gotten time to build up momentum before it reached the bottom of the hill that they had finally managed to reach. She raised an eyebrow, still looking at Rui. “I’ve got tribe mates who would have attacked you for your words by now.”

After that display Rui actually admitted defeated, to himself only though. He was more worried about the vixens chest. He pawed up to her with a frown on his face. "Stay still." He got closer and examined her chest, he noticed a slight swelling. "You are seriously going to get hurt."

There he went again being 'fatherly'. "Stay there. I'll be back in a bit." At least there was one good thing about being a 'leaf chewer', he knew them well. He knew of something that would take down the swelling. He gathered the necessary herbs and went back to Ayame. He rubbed the leaves against rocks until the became like a paste. "Keep this on." He rubbed the paste where the bruise spot. "In a bit it will become cold. I'm preparing the rest which will make it warm. Trust me.. it help." After raising that ball of energy Psyche he had to know how to deal with bumps and bruise.s

Ayame felt the urge to roll her eyes again, but managed to refrain and did stay put while Rui ran off to go get whatever it was he was after. She carefully stretched chest muscles to make her own assessment, wincing a bit as she did so. She’d probably be sore for at least a few days after pulling that little stunt of hers, but shouldn’t be longer than a week as long as she didn’t push herself too hard.

By the time Rui got back Ayame was sitting and looking vaguely distracted, even bored, though she sat still while he worked his plants into a paste and allowed him to apply it to her chest.

“I’ve had worse before,” she said, having to suppress the urge to shrug. “It took me a couple tries to perfect that move so there would be minimal damage.” There was a suspicious teasing light in her eyes. “I could go back up the mountain and chase the other rock down right now and be fine, though-,” she added thoughtfully, “-I couldn’t pull off that move again.”

Rui snorted. "Fine. Go ahead and get hurt. See if I help you." Actually... So she wouldn't get hurt Rui had the slightest urge to go up there and knock down on the opposite side of the hill. He grumbled. Whippersnappers. As much as Rui wanted to complain a loud gurgling came from his gut. "I don't know about you but I'm hungry."

This time Ayame did roll her eyes. “I’ll do what I’ve always done, I suppose,” she said. “Either patch myself up or take myself back to the tribe and have someone else help me.” She examined her chest, taking stock of the bruise and any other aches and pains she might have. “I’m a tough girl. My entire tribe is tough. We manage.”

She looked back up the hill where she knew the rock was waiting, then at Rui. A smile tugged at her lips as his stomach audibly growled. While she hated to just leave the rock up there, she knew she’d settled it fairly securely and she could always come back another day to get it. Her muscles were fairly tired at the moment anyway.

“I suppose we could go hunting, if you’re hungry,” she suggested, wondering what Rui’s usual diet was. Meat was common for foxes, but it seemed odd for him because of his similarity to a deer in appearance.

Rui nodded. Something to eat sounded good right about now. "What are you hungry for?" Out of respect, Rui himself didn't eat deer or moose... or anything with antlers really. He did eat meat however, mostly fish and birds, and rarely cow. His stubby tail twitched as he listened to nature.

If Ayame wanted meat she'd have to hunt for herself. He knew there was a lake nearby that had some fish and berries near by. He had no idea if she had ever had fish. Some foxes cant get past the scales and are bothered by all the bones.

Ayame shrugged. “I don’t really care,” she said. “I don’t feel like anything big, and that would kind of be a waste anyway since it’s only just two of us.” She pawed absently at the ground. “Something small would be nice. Rabbit, weasel, pheasant. I’m not really crazing anything in particular, so I don’t really mind whatever we go for.”

She raised an eyebrow at Rui. “Why don’t you pick something and I’ll just follow your lead? There’s not a lot out there that I haven’t hunted before, so I should be able to keep up no matter what you pick.”

Ayame thought about what she said for a moment. It would be highly embarrassing if Rui said he wanted something like berries for his meal. Well, maybe not highly, but it would still be a bit embarrassing that she sounded like she assumed they’d go out and hunt for food if he was more inclined to vegetarianism.

Rui nodded. "I passed a rabbit hole near the river... So fish, Rabbit and a light blueberry snack on the side. Sound good to you?" His tail twitched and he padded toward the river. "I'm guessing you don't care for a 'vegan' diet. I wouldn't be surprised either. I'm sure you need it here in the cold." He bounded down a small ledge. Pausing for a bit to let Ayame catch up. He could easily fish, and knew how to catch Rabbits so he could feed Psyche when she younger.

Ayame gave a delicate snort as she followed along with Rui, managing to keep up with the longer-legged male. “Not just a preference, it would be impossible to survive on a vegan diet here. There’s not nearly enough variety in the plants that you could healthily sustain yourself, not if your body’s built so that it requires meat to live. You’d end up wasting away to nothing.”

Ayame’s body slowly relaxed into the type of stride she’d need to best keep up with the swifter male, muscles relaxing and unbunching enough so that she was able to adopt a loping stride. It wasn’t precisely a bounding or jumping run, but there was a certain bounce in her step that gave her an almost cat-ish look, like she was about to pounce on something. It was an ideal run for when snow was about so that she didn’t have to simply plow through it all, though she did that too to keep up her strength.

"I know. That is why I eat fish as my source of 'meat'. It's not entirely vegan, but I won't eat anything with hooves or four legs." Rui came to a slow stop. His nose twitched, his attention turned toward a large mound. "He is the rabbit hole." He looked around. "And that way is the river." He looked at her. "How are you at catching rabbits?"
PostPosted: Tue Feb 19, 2013 1:32 pm

Ayame found it somewhat amusingly ironic that Rui had pointed out a rabbit hole, since she has just been about to ask him if small mammals where on his list of things he didn’t eat. Rabbits, squirrels, birds and other such creatures generally had little in common as far as looks with the larger prey animals, though for the most part they were considered only a snack or very light meal and not worth the effort of catching to larger tribes or groups.

“I’m decent at it,” she responded. “Better than fishing, anyway. I don’t like stalking burrows though, since digging them out is more trouble than they’re worth and they won’t come out of the burrow with me just sitting there. I prefer to keep an eye out for foraging creatures instead.”

She tilted her head and asked her question. “Do you eat small animals, or do you limit your meat intake to fish only?”

"Just fish usually. There have been times when I have had to eat rabbits. There are times when fish just aren't around." He surveyed the land. "This is a small burrow... Maybe 2- 3 rabbits." He found three holes. He found a rock and covered it up. "Stand by that hole and be ready." He gestured to the other hole and positioned himself near the other hole. He 'barked' into the hole and the rabbits fled. One rabbit was so scared it popped out of the hole he was guarding. He easily caught it and waited for Ayame to catch what came her way. He set the other rabbit down and sat by the river. "Eat to you are full or content. Whatever is left I'll take." He might not eat it, but he could always bring it to Psyche.
