Sokra reached up and felt his forehead, closing his eyes for a second. "I..." He shook his head. "I... knew you were searching for your mother. How did I...." He straightened up. "Past, huh? Maybe I can help with that." Sokra said, but he didn't elaborate.

Arinoa stayed silent. The ancient wheels of her mind were turning incessantly. By the time she felt calm enough to say something, they had reached the town, so she abandoned her train of thought.
"I need to buy some provisions before I leave town. You;re free to come with me if you like, but you'll either need to buy your own food and water, or find it for yourself as we go." She turned off the path, into a bakery, without waiting for him to speak.

Sokra turned and walked into the alley behind the shop. When he returned in two minutes he had everything he needed: he had told his mom that he was going on a trip, shouldered a pack of meat and filled a small wooden canteen with water from the nearby strem. He leaned against the wall as Arinoa walked out. He nodded at her and hefted the pack onto his shoulder, but didn't speak.

(Yum, wood flavored water. xd )

Arinoa strode off, knowing he would either follow, or meet her farther along the path. She stopped in three more shoppes, picking up cheese and fresh vegetables, and a parcel of meat. She stowed them in her pack and refilled her waterskin, not knowing how long their journey would be. She took the northern path out of town, deciding as she went that new shoe leather was nt necessary yet. By night, they would reach the next town, and would be able to buy or barter rooms for the night.

Sokra reached back behind his neck for an arrow, nocking it and drawing slowly. He listened carefully and heard the rustle of leaves and knew Arinoa was coming. He grinned, the feathers on the arrow haft brushing his ears like a whisper of wind. This was the last chance. It was time. Sokra let loose the arrow.

It flew straight and true into the deer, toppling it over, dead before it hit the ground. He turned to Arinoa as she strode past on the path. (Wait, I made a mistake. How could you rustle leaves if youre on the path? xd ) "Almost cost me the extra meat." He said, but not angrily.

(Maybe I had wandered off a little, then walked back onto the path just before you saw me?)

Arinoa nodded silently. She cracked her neck, and motioned with her head that hty should continuew on, a small smile on her face. She was tired, just imagining the long road their feet followed now. But every journey starts with a single step, as she had alwaus been told.

"Start with two instead." Sokra said, almost as if he could read her mind. He was carrying the deer, trying to hold it limp in a way that it didn't look grotesque. "Next stream and I'll get us some extra meat, just in case. It should only be a minute or two."

(Have you ever read The Dark Tower series, by Stephen King?)

Arinoa aquiesced to both his statement and his question, accepting without hesitation that he should percieve more than she spoke. She stretched out her mind at mid-afternoon when they reached the stream, feeling for some spore of her mother's presence. She could still feel, faintly, a call for help from the north, and could taste her mother-goddess magic in every life around them. But that was all. No active searching gaze from the northern mountains to say that she too was looked for.
Ah, then. Alone till last beat. Soon.
The thoughts, though cryptic, were lucid as well.
Her mother was dying, quickly.
But they could still make their way, would invariably arrive on time.

(No, I havent read anything by King)

Sokra crouched in the stream, washing off the meat strips and chunks in the moving water. Whereas(sp?) the water flowing into the flesh was a reflective blue, it was red on the opposite side. Sokra reasied each peice out from the stream and cooked them with his fire, wrapping them in cloth and packing them into his rucksack. He twirled his sword by his side idly, water still running down the crevices in the blade after being washed of blood. "How long do we have to get there?"

(Well that's just a slap in the face. gonk )

"Not long. A week, perhaps. But it doesn't matter."
She pulled a twisted root from a pouch at her side, chewing on the flavorless tuber (hahahaha) as she gazed almost listlessly about them.
She saw the sun, a swollen, almost angry orange, settling beyond the tree line.
"I'm thinking we should find a place to camp out for this night. Though there is safety in night-travel, it would be best this night to conserve our energy."

Sokra nodded, and promptly sat on his behind. "This is as good a place as ever." He said, and took off his traveling pack. He started scouring the nearby earth, looking for long, thick sticks, the ends of which he sharpened into stakes and plunged into the ground. He out a long folded cloth from his pack, draping it over the sticks to form an awkward-appearing, if rather large, tent. He detached his bedroll from his pack and threw it inside. He started rubbing his hands as darkness truly fell. "Fire or no? It won't keep away any beast, but it's a comfort."

Arinoa nodded.
"Why not. We have nothing to fear, at the moment, that the fire might draw near."
She let him work with the fire, and wandered off a little way into the trees. She came back minutes later with and armload of mushrooms, good for roasting. She piled them near her pack, and plopped down on an old, but not undesirably rotted, log near the center of their clearing.

Sokra burst a fireball into a pile of wood and tinder, and the flame blazed wildly. "Maybe it will keep the creatures away tonight." He quipped, then pulled out a pot from his pack. He poured water from his canteen inside, dropped in a few peices of meat, and shook some salt from a container in. Foraging for more sticks-(which he realized should have come first but doesn't want to correct the mistake)-he made a spit and a hook, from which he hung the pot over the fire. "Dinner should be ready soon. The fire is still going strong, and I don't think it'll stop at all tonight."

Arinoa grinned a small, content grin, and slid down to the forest floor. She leaned back on the log, and though a bit about how she had come this far. She had heard her mother's call, had stumbled upon this person, and had gone with him along the way What next? She would continue on, and she guessed now that he would accompany her, but what would they find, in the north? Ah, well. Those were thoughts for daylight. She cast sleepy eyes at Sokra, watching him cook. He amused her. She hoped he would stay.

( O_O No way. Somebody actually used a banner I made? Cool!)

Sokra kept poking the pot with a stick, making sure the ingredients didn't settle to the bottom. He cast a glance at Arinoa, and seeing her resting, he whispered to the flames, quieting them. He continued to speak to the fire, lowering it's blaze, and as the air and therefore pot cooled he grabbed it, ladling it into two bowls. He unwrapped a loaf of bread, breaking it into chunks, and went to sit by Arinoa. He stared at the stars, contemplating his past. Sokra missed the days where he could revel in all of nature; every leaf, tree, blade of grass. But his world shrunk as he grew bigger, and now the only thing that held meaning to him was the sky. Oh, to soar among the sky! He tapped Arinoa on the shoulder, "Dinner's ready" his only quiet words, listening to the sounds of the forest.
