When she began to de-scale the smaller fish he wondered if she thought he was claiming the bigger fish. No, he wasn't.
So, after de-scaling it he shoved it closer to her, smiling. "Here, you can eat it now." Insert grin here and you have a happy Edward hoping she'd give him the smaller fish. Ever since he met her she kept confusing him, throwing off his attempts to be polite and instead forcing him to care for himself, too. Strange. Very strange.

Peri smiled sweetly. It wasn't faked since she could be a very sweet person, but it did seem a bit overdone for the situation at hand. "But then what would you eat? I'm already half done descaling this one, and you worked so hard to clean that one up.
She lightly nudged the fish a bit closer to Edward. "Eat up. You need to rebuild your strength so you can heal and get back to top strength, just in case more brutes decide to come calling."

He shook his head, smiling back at her. "I am fine. You need this so you can heal faster. I can protect you without a full belly." He mused, smiling at the vixen genuinely. With another shake of the head, it was clear he was stubbornly polite, and would not budge easy. He was built that way!
Anyways, he wanted her to have more then him. He really did. He wanted her to enjoy the meal. Not himself. He didn't care. He was a very laid back fox and only wanted another person happy.

Hmmmm. Well Peri was fairly certain she could win in a battle of the wills, if only because she already had the smaller fish and could just ignore the bigger one. But there was possibly an easier way to deal with this that would make Edward just a bit less stubborn, for this instance and for any little instances in the future.
So, in a move that was totally out of her normal character Peri made herself look a bit smaller, put back her ears, and took on the most fragile face she had. It was one she'd actually perfected on her brother, that I'm-delicate-you-need-to-get-your-butt-over-here-to-protect-me-this-instant face, and it tended to achieve the desired results. Peri tried not to use it too often cause it felt like manipulation (which it was), but this case seemed like a good enough excuse to pull it out.
"But you're so much bigger and stronger than me," Peri said, voice soft and with that same hint of delicate-and-must-protect as her expression. "And you used up a lot more energy in fighting than I did, plus we don't know how much blood you might have lost cause we were paying attention to my wounds first. What if those guys come back with friends, and you're all weak because of the first fight and because you didn't eat a sufficent amount to properly recover?"
Pause, helpless look. "How do you think I'd feel knowing you got beat and possibly killed cause I took all the food? And I'm not in much better shape. If I eat too much I'll fall into a deep sleep instead of a nap and won't be any help at all. So when the others are done with you they can take me and have their way with me." Huge, frightened eyes, teenist little whimper, continue looking at Edward and maintain "protect me" expression.
There, that should do it.

Now, you see, Edward wasn't always surrounded by people, and he liked to believe in the best of others, unless they were bad. Peri wasn't bad, so the second her ears flopped down and she looked at him with that... that... cute but helpless expression he almost melted. Actually, he twitched and blushed slightly, looking away. To cute. Though he opened his mouth to protest he stopped, eyes flashing dangerously when she mentioned some random bloke having their way with her.
No.
No!
Hell no!
Immediately he jerked his head to look at her, shaking his head. "No!" He snapped back, though not angry at her. "I won't let them!" Instantly he grabbed the bigger fish and worked on eating it, once looking up with stern eyes.
"I will protect you from anyone trying to have their way with you."

Mentally Peri was wondering over the reaction she's gotten. It was a lot more energetic than she'd thought it would be, though since it was in the direction she wanted that was fine. But even appealing to how hurt she'd be if he got injured because of her was only slightly on the verge of swaying him. Edward hadn't gone into protection mode until Peri mentioned some major unpleasant danger to herself. Interesting, and something she'd have to remember if only because she'd have to undo some potential damage later.
She nodded and straightened up, dropping a lot of the helpless stuff she'd been doing earlier. "Good, I feel much more protected now," she said warmly, hoping this would help enforce good behavior, then started on her own fish which she'd finished descaling.

With a slight nod, he finished his meal. He would protect Peri from having herself done away with by random brutes! No, NO. As she ate he merely sat next to her, protective stance, and wondered why he was like this. Usually he was polite, yes, but he wasn't usually this protective. Often, he'd just get up when a threat happened, not mentally and physically prepare for one before hand.
As he watched her eat he smiled slightly, shaking his head quickly. Was he broken? Probably. Yes, broken. That was the excuse, of course. The word 'crush' failed to entire his mind completely.

Peri looked up at Edward's back, and made a small face. Already he was in some kind of guard stance, which was counterproductive to resting. She sighed. It was hard to play damsel in distress and mafia princess back and forth so much, even if those were both parts of her personality. They tended to be extreme parts though, and generally all one saw was a happy vixen.
"We should rest now," she said pointedly. "If you're worried about defense we can move to a more secluded location. Probably a good idea, the smell of fish will make predators curious anyway." She quirked up an eyebrow questioningly and waiting for Edward to respond.

When she looked at him he practically melted right there, even though he didn't understand why. Suddenly, he smiled sweetly at her, tail flicking. "Only if I can carry you~" Then he stopped, dread crossing his face. Did he just say that?! His head lowered in defeat, sheepishly looking at Peri.
"That was rude, I don't know why I did that." He whimpered lightly, nodding as he stood, attempting to change the topic. "So, sleep area, yea? Follow me, Mi- Peri." Wow he had botched it up, leading Peri off into the woods and to a tree with a nook in it, nodding towards it.
"Does this suit you?"

Peri smiled in a sweet way, knowing that Edward was already embarassed and not trying to add to it. "It'll do fine," she said, "I'm used to sleeping a bit of everywhere since I travel so much." Inwardly she was marveling at how she wasn't really getting as embarassed. Now that she thought about it she was usually seen as something of a spaz that did a lot of odd stuff, but she'd never gotten embarassed over much of anything that she did. Huh, how odd.
"The main question is thoug," she added, pulling herself from her intospection, "is if it'll work for you." She smiled again. "You seem on guard. Does this spot meet your standards?"

"Me?"
He blinked at her, glancing at the tree and then to the sides. She'd be safe there if he slept right nearby. How close? He hadn't.... decided..yet. Glancing at her, he returned her smile, nodding.
"Yes, it'll do." He mused, nodding to her and gently, warily nudging her side. "Sleep well." He glanced about once more, tense currently. Very tense. He was worried about Peri, about those random blokes who had attacked them. Why? Why had they attacked them?
It didn't matter! He'd do better next time....

Peri had walked over to a spot and was about to plop down and curl up, when she noticed Edward still standing and still quite tense. She frowned; tense was not what she wanted. She turned and went back over to Edward, bumping her shoulder against his.
"Hey, come on, are we sleeping or what? I thought we agreed to be near each other for protection and warmth." If anything being closer to her would make him relax about having to keep an eye on her and the combined body heat soothing muscles should also help.

Edward blinked at her offer, turning a light pink. "O-Oh, yes." He moved to sit down by the grove, giving her plenty of room. Resting his head on his paws he waited patiently for Peri, in the back of his mind reeling. Peri would sleep beside him~ That made him smile... the sweet vixen would trust him and in return he'd let himself just be a little impolite for her sake. Just a little.
She really did make him feel strange, but he could dwell on that tomorrow. Would he just leave? Would she? Maybe.... or.. he could use an excuse.
"Tomorrow I should.... escort you. They could be following you." He said sleepily, totally making an excuse. Oh well, it was the best he had.

Peri smiled. "It would be churlish of me to refuse, especially since you'd be sacrificing your own time to do so." Of course a day of traveling didn't mean they'd be safe and out of the territory of a violent group, especially if they didn't know whether it was just a pair or and entire clan, and where their home base was. But those were thoughts for tomorrow.
Leaving it at that, Peri gently lowered herself to the ground so as not to aggrivate her back, curled up next to Edward so that barely a paw's width separated them. She placed her head down on her front paws, shut her eyes, and seemed to just drop off into immediate sleep.

When she fell asleep Edward stayed up for a little, watching the area around him. It probably took him an hour to relax, and when he did he glanced at Peri, twitching.
Oh she was severely cute...
Resting his head near her neck, just for a brief moment, he quietly sighed before once more moving his head back onto his paws, letting his tail flick over to touch the tip of Peri's. As sleep came to him he wondered absently what to do, what to say in the morning. Perhaps find her breakfast..... yes.
He really didn't want to go home.
