Did you use photoshop? then i guess you should remove the shadows off the text, along with the the stroke border. The shadow and stroke of the word 'burn' is alright, though.
The white cloudy effect on the sides..not a good touch. I guess if you removed the cloudy effects, and the stripes pattern. Add simple text and a nice 'patterned' or even a coffee stained/watercoloured background, you could get a realllyyyy good banner. Because by how your banner looks, i can very well say that you have experimented on alot of design techniques like shadows and patterns, etc.
If you want examples of what i'm talking about, do let me know. i can make them for ya. =D

Hey, you know what you should add to your resources list? Sumo Paint. It's a cool image editor and graphics program that you can use online or download to your computer and use. You don't have to register to use the online editing part, but if you want to have your images hosted on there, then you have to register. I like it better than GIMP, personally. It comes with more interesting brushes to start with, for one.
I might enter one. Maybe. Possibly. biggrin Or maybe I'll make a contest banner, yeah?

Omg that's one awesome interface, clean and simple, and the gradients, amazing. darnnnn if i EVER don't have photoshop installed in my laptop. Sumo paint is the most badass choice everrrr!

Isn't it awesome? I use it whenever I can't get home and use my photoshop there. Although, now that I know about that paint.net thing, I really like using that.

Me likey your style. And you're like, one of the few people who actually use vintage effects, and the fact that that owl says 'dude' , it's burn! the everything guild...makes it a very appealing banner for advertising. =D

There are plenty of softwares. Photoshop just has more features and is helluva expensive. I don't think any of us need photoshop as much as commercial graphic designers. xD
