I've never really been made fun of for reading. People have asked me how I can read for hours upon hours and how I can finish those really thick books so quickly, but everybody who sees me reading and notices it doesn't really care all that much.

they don't laugh at me because I read book (simply shocked by the sized I read)

they laugh at me because I like how they smell (the books!)

I wonder why it is that people are thought of as antisocial/friendless when we read books. One of my friends was just enjoying a book over dinner in her dorm dinner room when the building's staff looked at her and gossiped "Oh, she has no one to sit with!" *eyeroll* Gawd.

I get made fun of for reading... and when they distract me, I smack them right above the waistline. They tend to shut up after that.

It might have somthing to do with the fact that I read mostly books that are Science Fiction and Fantasy, or that have been series for longer than they have been in school. Or the simple fact that I carry around two Codexes for Warhammer 40k and a Gaunt's Ghosts book.

My teachers are always surprised by my Star Reading Tests, and why my Grade Equivilency for material I COULD read and COULD understand is 12.9 +, since 6th grade. Or why I would read a book instead of listening to them and then getting an A+ on a test or assignment.

People often look at me like I'm some different species. I almost always have my nose in a book, so people will jump in surprise when I raise my eyes from the book, or speak.

In my school, because I read, that makes me an Untouchable. I don't get a lot of chances to talk to other students. It's a never ending cycle because no one will talk to me so I'm out of the loop, and then when they DO talk to me, I can't relate at all. I get picked on (even by the few friends I have) because I'm the only Junior who's never been kissed or gone to a dance crying .

So, yes, I do get teased sometimes for being a reader.

You're not the only one... though I do have a girlfriend, and I did go to Homecoming last year... it was really not that fun. You're not missing much, trust me!

EDIT: I have yet to be kissed razz even though I do have a girlfriend

I don't get laughed at for reading a book. They look at the book and the size and they ask, "How can you read that?" Like it's the most putrid thing in the world to do and why would I even bother, especially since it's not for an assignment.

My friends don't totally bug me about me reading lots of books, but they keep calling me "Bookworm", and that's just plain annoying.

yeah, i get that a lot. i think its mostly because other people around me cant understand what i am reading because it is too high of a reading level xd

Yes. Since I can remember. But now it's not so much as being made fun of... It's that people assume I'm stuck up, or too smart for them. One of the reasons why I only have one real friend. And even he doesn't read like I do. But at least he knows me and understands me.

"Oh. You read. I'm not really into reading. I like movies."
It's usually something like that.

My friend Danny teases me and keeps talking about how reading is my "escape."

Last year, every time I would start reading, this guy would come up to me and say that the book I was reading was "dirty." He did that with every book he saw me reading.

I don't think that has happened to me.
But likely it has, and I just either don't notice or forgot.
*shrugs*
But it's kind of funny, because the other day we were playing this game in one of my classes to get to know each other better.
And the teacher read off "Would rather be in a bookstore instead of here."
About 3 of the people were still standing, me included.
Hahah...
Mostly it's just the reaction, "Wow, what a big book. You're actually reading that?". So my reaction is nod and return to the book.
I just find reading very fun and enjoyable to do.
It's a way to pass time when one is especially bored.

I had to teach the literature class for the older students yesterday. I made a comparison that the bootmaker was like a bibliophile in their passionate love. One of the girls gave me the oddest look, like I was insane or something. Then she told me that I need to stop reading books, or some such nonsense.

The funny thing about this is that I work in a Christian school. Their whole basis for existance is to love a book.

Same here stressed
everyone thinks Im ubber smart because im always reading. I just tell them "No Im not that smart at all I just love to read"

When I was in gradeschool I used to pull out a book in class break time and get completely absorbed in it, look up, and we would be back in the middle of class because no one had tapped me. sweatdrop

*doesn't think she's responded to this yet*

Ever since I started high school, no one's really bugged me about reading...except my teachers. My English teacher included - I can't understand why a teacher who teaches about reading doesn't want me reading a book when I've finished her work. I still get the occasional "Say, how many books do you read in a week?", but it's died down, since for me it was during middle school that kids didn't know what a book was.

I've never really been all that social anyway (though, again, it's gotten a lot better since high school started), so I wouldn't be able to tell if it was because I read a lot or because of my choice of friends in middle school that kids didn't talk to me a lot (aside for asking about homework). I've been bullied by a few different kids over the year, but that, too, died down after awhile, and I really don't think it was because I read.

I can't go anywhere without a book. People have learned to accept that, even when they're surprised. No one teases me about it. 3nodding
