"Not bad, actually." He turned it over to examine the back, still leaning back, legs crossed at the ankle and hair tumbling into the bruised eye. He looked thoughtful, some of the grin gone out of him, fingertips strumming against the edge of the little card.
"Where did you get this?" He didn't offer it back, though, instead bending it easily at the middle to see how it felt.

"...Does my getting it back depend on my willingness to answer the question?" He asked arching an eyebrow.
"I... knew something about someone who knew the person who made that... if...you catch my drift." He said and drummed his fingers on the table. Admitting to basically blackmailing wasn't high on his list of 'things to do in a day'... but it wasn't like he dropped names.

It was a respect-worthy answer. Ever made a little noise, smoothing his thumb across the surface and then leaning in to offer it toward Zac, so he could do the same. Or just steal it back, if that was his preference.
"It's not perfect, though, so try not to give them any reason to look really hard, huh?" He rolled one shoulder in a shrug, grinning easily at Zac as he leaned in against the table. "I can't imagine what sort of secrets it cost you."

"... mmm... Depends on the person, some people freak out more easily than others, which is ironic given how much of what they think their keeping hidden is normally right in the open, or nearly so..." He mused and grabbed the card back carefully assuming Ever was done with it.
"They might already look pretty hard given the Height." He added "And I don't intend to add high heels to the evening so..."

"...so if you're capable of it, try smiling. It can work wonders." There was an easy sarcasm to his tone -- but it was offered with a crooked sort of smile that really did take the worst edge off of it. And before Zac could get out a retort, the waitress came back with their food: quick, greasy, nothing pretty about it, but it would certainly serve.
"Coffee?" Her question was flat, neutral, flicked between them, and Ever shook it off -- already going for his fork.

"...Sure." he said cautiously, if nothing else he suspected he'd want it because he was still a little tired from studying and...other things that filled his evenings, though he was anticipating 'stunted growth' jokes and road tar in a cup.
"With or without a rigor mortis effect." he asked as soon as she was done and gone again.

Ever paused with a mouthful of eggs halfway to his mouth to stare at Zac, leaning in against the table with his head tipped lightly to one side. He didn't understand the question, at first; it took a moment to click, but once it did he flashed another easy sort of grin.
"Like you don't hate them. Like you're not angry. Like they haven't done anything to you yet, and have no reason to, so you're totally relaxed and content." He shook his head a little. "Because otherwise, they'll assume something's wrong right off the bat."
With that, he shoved the fork into his mouth.

"....relaxed and smiling don't necessarily go hand in hand." He replied with a scowl. He drummed his fingers on the table for a second and then picked up his burger giving it a cautious squeeze to let what hot grease lingered dribble out onto the plate in a discolored oily haze.... delicious.
He looked thoughtful, and then... just for a moment, he actually looked pleased. Did he look -too- pleased though that would be the question.
"Mmm...well I can maybe think of a few other things that make me feel at ease." He said and shrugged and took a small cautious bite and looked like he'd been at least pleasantly surprised.

"Try it, at least, because if you're glaring at the guy like he just punched your sister...." He paused, just watching Zac, and then shook it off, apparently giving up on trying to offer advice. Instead, he shrugged and devoured the last of his eggs, already almost done with them. Skipped lunch.
"Whatever. If you get stopped at the door because you're making angry faces at the bouncer, I'll just leave you there." It held a teasing edge, yes, but Ever did sound serious.

"Yeah yeah... I'm sure you'd be heartbroken over it too." He said slightly ruefully. "I'll work on it..." He added and sighed.
"... She'd probably punch him back." He added suddenly.
He'd never mentioned a sister, or even acted like someone with a sister, if people acted like that anyhow.

Ever made a soft sound around his toast like a smothered laugh, setting down his toast and leaning forward just a little. Apparently that had clicked, to some degree, at least.
"That doesn't surprise me at all." This time, he spoke around his mouthful around his food -- but with a hand carefully up to hide it, stil mostly polite. Mostly.

"...It might if you met her." he took another bite of the burger and nodded deciding it was truly acceptable and that the first bite was not in fact a fluke.
Beth was in many ways his polar opposite, sweet, cheerful, and one of the worlds worst cooks to boot.

Ever polished off his toast in three more bites, and then leaned back to watch Zac eat. He was finished, one toe tap-tapping in a restless sort of way as he scraped fingers up through his hair.
"Not likely to ever meet your sister, man." He tapped two fingers on the table and flashed a smile. "Eat faster, this is just supposed to be dinner, not the whole evening."

Zac scowled at him but did pick up the pace slightly, trying to ignore the tapping and the impatience...mostly. The finger tapping about did it though and he finally gave up deciding he was 'full enough'.
"If you keep tapping, I'm going to kick you so hard in the shin your nest hook up feels it."

"I think aiming for the shin's about a foot too low." He wiggled his eyebrows at Zac even as his foot went still: teasing and acquiescing at exactly the same moment. Ever rolled one shoulder in a shrug. "You done?"
