He inclined his head slightly to a side when she suddenly stopped talking, her expression and apparent want to occupy her hands hinting that the next leg of the story was less than pleasant. Well, it was Galactic, after all, and he had a rough idea or two as to why she would be averted to continued.

Wait a minute. Galactic. Lucretia. Amalthea. Another name fell into place, shaped to fit the puzzle perfectly.

"Do you..." He paused, rested a hand on his mouth, and thought for a moment, brow burrowed. When he spoke again, his volume was as gentle as possible, despite all of the horrible alarms blaring in his head. "Does the name Dactyl mean anything to you?"

His pause seemed natural enough, and Claire simply kept gazing down at her fingers. If he asked her to continue she would just avoid it - he wouldn't press it if she seemed too upset, thankfully.

Then he said that name, and the weakened dam that had been trying to hold back all of her memories suddenly burst, and everything came crashing down on her all at once.

The blood turned to ice in her veins, the color slowly drained from her face and her gaze remained fixed on her fingers, eyes widening slightly. "Wh.." She had completely frozen as soon as that word, that name left his lips. No matter how quiet or gentle his tone was, that name could only ever be associated with fear, pain, sadness, and even shame, to name a few. Her lips were parted but she couldn't speak, couldn't even think - it felt like her heart had literally stopped, everything had stopped, and she suddenly felt so very, very cold...

To say the shift in her expression was subtle would have been a terrible lie, and all of sudden the picture was complete, as if that single piece had revealed the entirety of the puzzle's contents. It was an image that Lucas would have preferred not to see.

He moved instinctively, encompassing her smaller frame with his arms and drawing her into a hug, his height bringing his chin to rest on the top of her head. Fetch tumbled unceremoniously from Claire's lap as he did so, blinking dazedly but otherwise unfazed; it was long past puppy bedtimes. Though Lucas's movements were born of sympathy, kindness, and protection, his expression was anything but.

"I'll kill him." Claire would be unable to see, but his eyes were narrowed to venomous slits. "I would have killed him before. Damn it. He's a dead man."

It wasn't until Lucas suddenly pulled her into a hug that she jumped - except it wasn't as much of a startled 'jump' as it was just an involuntary shudder, due to her body's decision to stop working properly, and that was also when she realized she was shaking. Whether it was really from being cold, from being light-headed or just from the weight of everything crashing down on her, she couldn't tell. All she knew was that, when her thoughts actually started working again, that was when the tears started rolling down her cheeks.

Instinctively she wrapped an arm around his middle and clung to him tightly, pressing the palm of her other hand on her forehead and using the arm to partially hide her face, as she laid her cheek on his chest. She didn't reply or even react to his statements, she could only tremble in his arms as she cried silent tears, unable to stop the flow once it had started. The fact she couldn't - or wouldn't - make any noise besides the occasional sniffle could possibly make one wonder how much she was used to hiding her tears.

Lucas remained still save for the hand that idly rubbed Claire's back, though she might have noticed another presence at her side as Fetch nuzzled at her arm, curious as to why his comfy bed was making water now.

"Don't cry." His gaze remained seething and his teeth increasingly clenched. "I'll go back to Galactic and I'll kill him. There's nothing to worry about." At the moment he uttered the words, he was completely serious. He didn't care if he was killed on sight. Even if he was shot full of holes, he wouldn't stop until that man was dead.

The nose on her arm was absently noted, though she didn't notice if it was wet or not. Her arm was already damp with tears, eyes shut tight as she trembled in silence.

It would be several minutes filled with tears and sniffles before she began to calm down. Eventually she would, and just the occasional sniffle or shudder would betray the fact she had been so upset. And her face too, of course.

She wiped her eyes and sniffled again, trying to blink away the hazy blurriness that so many tears had left to cloud her vision. Her hand gingerly reached out to stroke Fetch's head as she started inhaling deeply, trying to calm herself more with deep breaths. After a few moments she pulled her hand back and pressed it against her forehead before closing her eyes, taking another deep breath before attempting to speak. "Y-you'll do no such thing." Another deep breath and a slight shake of her head, mildly frustrated at her voice not wanting to cooperate properly. She wet her lips, trying to build up the courage to speak again to ask what she couldn't before, and when she could her voice was quiet. "How... how did you know?"

"I will," he returned. Though Claire wouldn't see it in her current position, his face betrayed his confidence as an assassin for the first time in ages. Even though Lucas himself was unaware that he had held such a position, his training and his resolve emerged on his features very clearly. "Loose lips sink ships. He didn't know when to shut up. Higher-ups forbade me to go anywhere near him, knowing what I'd do. Damn them all. They can kill me if they want, but not before I kill him."

Fetch's tail waved slightly at the contact, and he licked at Claire's sleeve when her hand moved away. Eugh, sleeve. Gross.

Her body gave another involuntary shudder at the words, but Claire bit back the tears this time. "..what?" He.. he talked about her? And for Lucas to want to actually kill him, it couldn't have been anything good.

She shrank a size in his arms. "Arceus," she muttered with a groan, shutting her eyes. The tears threatened her again so she held her breath a few seconds to stop the feeling. Her hand stretched out to stroke the fire puppy's head again, the tenseness she hadn't been aware of fading as she exhaled, the tone of her voice more normal and curiously firm. "What did he say?"

Hand didn't taste like sleeve. Fetch had learned this. Sleeve was bad, but hand was good. He raised his muzzle to lick at the underside of Claire's wrist when her hand returned to his head.

What, did she think he would repeat it? Hell no. No amount of money in the world could force those quotes past Lucas's lips. "I had no idea who you were and it was already my life's mission to wring the neck that gave voice to those words." A vague hint was all he would lower himself to say.

She allowed the Growlithe to lick her wrist - he would probably find that her fingers and her palm rather damp and salty from the tears. Her expression remained level, even if Lucas couldn't see it, as she attempted to pull herself further from the emotional cliff she'd fallen off of. A hint of a sad smile appeared on her face for a moment or two at his words. "That bad, huh? Not that I'd be surprised." Not in the slightest.

The smile vanished and she pulled her hand away from Fetch so she could gently pull away from Lucas, sitting on the floor in front of him with a sigh. Her expression had changed - there was a thoughtful frown present, but she seemed.. resolute. She raised a hand to rub her eyes and paused, lowered it and raised the other one for the job instead. She didn't want to rub dog slobber into her eyes. Ew. Her eyes had been dry, just sore from the tears. She paused then, her expression not changing as she looked into Lucas' face. "They transferred him, I'm sure they told you. Did they tell you why?"

Fetch attempted to follow her hand as it was pulled away, stumbling awkwardly into Claire. Why was he so short? Or, more importantly, why was his bed so tall? How was he supposed to lick such a faraway thing? He pawed expectantly at the woman.

Lucas was relieved to see the resolve in her expression, but his outrage persisted nonetheless. "No, they didn't. They didn't tell me where he was transferred either, so I assumed they were trying to cover his a** before I skinned it."

She opened her mouth to reply when a fluffy thing bumped into her. A small smile appeared on her face as she shifted to sit cross-legged so Fetch could get into her lap again, and she reached out to scratch the side of his face with both hands. "They had been thinking about it for a while but I guess hoped he would leave me alone eventually. This was after I dumped him," she explained with a sigh. The tears wanted to surface again, but for the first time her anger and hatred of this man was overpowering any other emotion, and her expression remained resolute. "He refused to believe we broke up, so he harassed me for almost six months. He was reprimanded at least once early on, so he stopped the direct harassment." But, of course not the indirect harassment, the little... "But eventually, I guess he got sick of waiting, or.. I don't know. He started trying to contact me again but I wouldn't answer, I went to a commander instead. Somehow," she paused, shifting uncomfortably a little bit, "he found out when I was going. He was.. waiting outside the elevator after the meeting." She frowned, trying to figure out how to continue. It was a painful - literally - experience and one she hadn't ever spoken of. Actually, she'd never spoken of any of it to anyone, and it was a difficult story to tell. But, somehow, she was determined to tell it.

Fetch climbed into the offered lap and gave a little hop, planting his paws on either of Claire's shoulders and snuffling about her neck and hair. He would eventually rest his chin on one of his paws - and, by property of association, on her shoulder - and bury his nose in her hair. He wanted to perch on her shoulder. But it was smaller than him. Investigation was necessary.

"...I wish you had come to me." He didn't know what commander Claire had approached with the problem or why she had chosen that one specifically, but if she had come to the elite instead, that would have involved him directly and he would have had all liberty to absolutely slaughter the offending grunt. There was nothing could be done about what had already happened, though, and so he could only sigh. He noticed her discomfort, her frown, her hesitation... and also her distinct resolve. "Don't feel obligated to tell me anything you don't want to say."
PostPosted: Thu Jan 27, 2011 1:44 pm

The correct phrasing was found, but before she could speak, there was a sudden orange and cream face shoved near hers and then a wet nose snuffling over her shoulder and into her hair. "Hey--!" It startled her, but it didn't bother her so she simply smiled and chuckled slightly, scratching the fire dog's back and sides instead. "I wish I had too, but I didn't know you then. I.. I wish I did," she sighed, frowning slightly.

"No, I want to. I only ever spoke to higher-ups about it and I could never tell anyone specifics." Just telling the higher-ups had been torturous enough and usually ended in tears. That is, if she hadn't started crying barely halfway through. Determination and willpower gave her the strength to relay such sensitive information now, and also helped keep the tears at bay. It was getting surprisingly easier, but she couldn't figure out exactly why. She drew a breath before continuing. "He pushed me back in and closed the door, then pushed me down against the wall so I'd hit my head on the hand rails." She frowned and her stomach churned at the memory, but it was... it wasn't as bad as she'd thought it would be, and then her mouth curved into a little smirk. "I managed to give him a black eye before the door opened, and one of the higher-ups was there, I forget which one. I just remember --" no, she still couldn't say his name, "he got yanked off me suddenly and slammed into a wall. They told me he was demoted and transferred, but they didn't tell me where either," she finished with a sigh, relaxing slightly. This feeling was... it was odd, to say the least, but she actually felt... better. Much better.

Lucas listened with a straight face that betrayed no intention. When she finished speaking, he stood.

"I'll be right back."

He turned to start down the hall, the Growlithe removing his face from Claire's now-tangled hair to stare curiously after his human.
