Oh, good! We're safe!

J'aro hissed between his teeth. "No," he answered F'sey. This was something he'd seen coming, and the worst thing about it was there was no quick fix. No one man could control a crowd of people (more so when many of those people were hormonal teenagers and children).

The glows that were held by the masters and wingleaders behind the eggs, as well as the goldrider, provided just enough light to make a silhouette scampering around the eggs.

The Winter's Night Egg shook, just a little, but nothing else happened until--

User Image

Perched atop the egg was one of the smallest green flits they had ever seen. Certainly not a baby, but still on the younger side. She flicked her tail and wailed at all of them. The mournful cry could have been a direct result of the candidates running around...

Errr. Maybe not.

...but it was probably a plea for someone to protect her from the the monstrous tunnel snake that lunged from the darkness, grabbed her by the throat and took her down behind the eggs.

People screamed.

Things only got worse when the tunnelsnake -- by a brief glance appearing twice the size as normal -- emerged from the clutch, dragging the dead firelizard with it, and fled somewhere close to the female candidates.

OOC: Run away!

There is a huge tunnelsnake in the candidates somewhere. It might be poisonous. This is cause for concern. Girls and boys alike are panicking and the two groups have merged.

If you candidate tries to stand still they will be trampled.

The character's have the following choices:

- Run toward the eggs.

- Stay completely still and get run over.

- Try to move with the crowd in no specific direction.

- Run to the stands.

- Run toward the dragons.

- Run toward the healers / feeding table.

For your next post, roll a 10-sided dice. If the number you get is 1 or 10, your candidate is going to sustain some kind of injury as a direct result of the riot. (It will not be bad enough they have to leave the grounds completely and cannot Impress.)

As a side note, at least one NPC is being trampled to death, so this is no light matter. Remember, there are at least 40 NPC candidates running around along with the PCs.

You have until 11 AM EST tomorrow to roll or the mule will roll for you.

Aww, there was a little flit! A scared little fl-

AND A HUGE TUNNELSNAKE. Iafri shrieked, unable to stifle the horror and fear, and for a moment let go of Kalania. It was a mistake. In all the chaos, she was jostled around and lost track of Kala completely. Oh no. Oh no! Now not only was there a giant tunnelsnake on the loose, she was alone. Iafri tried to look for her friend, but it was nearly impossible, and she was forced to run or be trampled.

Hoping they might provide some protection, she fled towards the dragons.

Most of the candidates were typical weaklings who couldn't keep a hold on themselves- dimglows, no pun intended; there were only a handful out there who were still lit by their glowbaskets, and the light from the observers who had kept theirs was almost blinding. from the Sands was the sound of calling, yelling; it had turned into chaos on the sands. Losasath's mind was awhirl with his wordless opinions; Chaos, dismemberment, and the smell of fresh meat. "No," V'tor told his purple somberly, "No one is going to die. I hope." And if someone were, say, to get dragged off by one of those white-sized tunnelsnakes the rumors had been increasing them to... well. At least this would be a Hatching to remember.

Though the 'Weyrwoman' would probably be furious.

And then... the tunnelsnake, or something that looked like it, came from nowhere, and wrapped its greedy mouth around a firelizard that had laded on an egg. Chaos, Losasath told V'tor firmly, his eyes red as flames as he watched the Candidates running for safety. Many of this clutch dead in the egg, I think.

V'tor wished he had a belt knife.

That hadn't worked. With the actual appearance of the huge tunnelsnake, pandemonium broke out, and even as big as he could, Adetsu knew he couldn't hold his ground. Part of him said to run for it, just run from the hatching grounds completely, forget about the whole thing.

Another part, the stubborn part, the part that made decisions and never, never, never let them go (witness his continuing love for Exrin), was not quite so willing to flee. He had come here to impress. He wasn't leaving until one of those sharding dragons picked him. Or picked Kaeyne. That'd work too. That first, actually.

Fine. They'd come for eggs. That's where they'd go! And anyway, that's where the gold was, right? Seemed like being close to her would be a safe bet.

Stepping forward so his back was no longer against Kaeyne, he clutched his basket (not so bright now, but at least Kaeyne hadn't had a chance to follow his example), and with his free hand, grabbed Kaeyne and pulled. Using his size to push through the crowd as necessary, he ran toward the eggs, preferring the dangers of young dragons to the dangers of possibly poisonous, firelizard eating tunnelsnakes.

And, queen. Nearby.

It'd be okay.

Two seconds away from depositing that basket of glows, the cry of the green flit echoed through the sands. Kaeyne actually paused, looked to her when the huge freaking tunnelsnake jumped from behind the eggs they were supposed to be impressing, and snatched the firelizard corpse to - the female candidates.

Then, panic.

The first thing to enter into Kaeyne's mind was, we are all going to die.

It'd be sweet and adorable to think there would be some sense in knowing he was going to die with his best friend and partner, surrounded by others with like interests, at the hands of some gruesome creature one fought valiantly against. Heroic. Touching. Fantastic, even! People would sing the epic ballad of it for turns and turns, maybe even if the Islands became public at other Weyrs. (Doubtful, but amusing.)

Sweet and heroic and fabulous, yes, but that didn't keep his second thought from being, ******** that.

Adetsu grabbed his hand just as his own mental words registered and pulled hard enough that he felt the jolt through the length of him. Kaeyne turned as quickly as possible, close at Adetsu's heels when they began to cut through the crowd.

Queen was going to eat them, they were going to die, but it would be a damn sight better than being killed by the tunnelsnake. But--

"There may be more." said Kaeyne, voice raised to be heard by his partner, somehow through the din. "'Tsu - it came from behind the eggs, there may be more." Mamagold hadn't protected the eggs from the tunnelsnake, now had she?

Well.

Should've let them have a sharding knife now, shouldn't they?

As short as Kellon was, she completely missed the view of the green firelizard as it scrambled atop one of the eggs, and instead saw only the backs of those in front of her. She did hear their murmurs, however, and did her best to peek above the shoulders of the other Candidates pressed around her to catch a peek at the firelizard. Why the shards was a flit on the hatching grounds? Whomever she belonged to would get a tongue lashing later, no doubt. But that's what they deserved for being such an idiot and allowing their stupid little pet to come near the eg-

Her thought stream was interrupted by the cry of the flit, and the screams of the girls around her very shortly after. She had no idea what was happening until the unmistakable silhouette of a tunnelsnake, as large as the ones at the Touching, passed to her side and relatively close to the group. Panic erupted around her, and Kellon felt fear grip her own heart. The tunnelsnakes had killed a guard! They could very well kill her too! Bodies bumped into her as the Candidates fled every which way, and the girl also began to move before she was trampled by those rushing around here.

She turned a heel and headed towards the healers and feeding tables, and away from the eggs. It seemed the majority of the Candidates were going towards the clutch, and why? Hadn't the tunnelsnake come from that way? Then it made sense to go the opposite shardin' direction! Not to mention the healers would be very close by in case she did get injured. Would a freakin' hatchling dragon be able to heal her if she was bitten by a poisonous tunnelsnake? Hell no. For the moment, she was quite content to be as far away from the eggs as possible, Impression be damned.

"SHARDS AND SHELLS."

Forgetting all about the punk that was trying to pick a fight with him (little assface, Roxyn was going to remember you later!), the brunette actually gaped at the sight. An adorable little lizard, assaulted from nowhere by a leaping snake. It took a moment, but common sense finally kicked in.

Get the ******** out.

He had no interest with these dragons anyways; he's just join his father in the Stands and all would be well, right? Right!

It should have been that easy, in theory. However, our dear Roxyn failed to account for the sheer panic that erupted after the brief momentary stun everyone experienced. Before the boy even realized what was happened, the ground was rushing up to meet him. He braced his call with his hands, barely, but it didn't do him a hell of a lot of good. Someone tripped over him, someone else actually fell. Roxyn scrambled to get his footing, snarling angrily and- Crunch!

Something broken.

Roxyn wailed.

Mairin had rocked back on her heels at the appearance of the tunnel snake. This was worse than the attack during the touching, it had been day then and even with people panicked it had been easier and safer to maneuver through the crowd. This was pretty much just a ********. There were too many bodies, too many voices and no clear directives for anyone to follow.

Common sense told the girl to move, staying still would get her trampled or attacked by the tunnelsnake that had of course come right towards the girls. Fighting the crowd to get across the hatching grounds and near the regular rider's dragons and Whers was going to be too much of a hassle and tall and solid as she was Mairin risked being knocked down in the mob. Going to the right was not an option right now.

Instead she darted forwards towards the mass of eggs the tunnelsnake had lurked by. It was sort of her responsibility to try and protect them or at least that's what she told herself. There was also the fact that Mairin was positive the queen would start moving soon and there was no way even a huge tunnelsnake would risk attacking that right? It wasn't like the gold had known the tunnelsnake had been there right?

Though what she'd do if the eggs began to hatch and the dragonets tried to search for Theirs Mairin didn't know. Restraining them could send them between but they faced likely death if they went too far out in the open as well.

For all that this was a scene of panic and potential tragedy Mairin's blood thrummed with excitement, her body not able to differentiate between manufactured adrenaline and that which was genuine. Her hands were clenched into tight firsts though as she pulled herself up in front on the center of the clutch. She wanted to be near the eggs but not actually within the group of them.

Well then, there indeed were tunnelsnakes out here one the sands still. Had everyone really been so naive to think that they'd gone away completely since the time of the hatching? Maybe he and Vessali should have killed more of them that time they went out and about but then again. . . well, too late for trouble now? The flitter was dead and the tunnelsnake was running amongst the female candidates. Everyone had started to scatter and Jerishude watched as some of the candidates ran towards the dragon eggs and some ran back towards the healers while some just ran around period.

Several options ran through his head: Running towards the eggs (and the Queen) could lead to the Gold getting pretty ticked off and stomping the living crap outta whomever got too close. Running to the healers and the feeding table meant he left the hatching ground and therefore if a dragon hatched he'd miss the chance to be there and see it first hand. The same result came if he ran to the stands but her certainly couldn't just stand still and allow himself to be trampled. Eventually though he'd have to pick a direction and since many of the people were heading towards the eggs he assumed that would be the best place to go after all. The queen wouldn't be able to crush all of them at once right? Not to mention the Weyrwoman had a basket of glows and therefore he could stand where it was light.

If there was one thing Vessali knew, even while parts of his brain were full of terrified white noise, it was that dragons didn't let people get hurt. When the other candidates broke and ran, he spotted Sammis again and charged for the smaller boy.

He caught up, got a hand fisted in the back of his robe, and pulled and propelled him toward the wingleaders and the space around the gold. Yes, that meant that they had to veer by the eggs, but better there than fumbling around and tripping over others in the dark.

...Well Connor thought to himself in the brief moment before everything got even worse. At least we know whats out there now. Of course with everyone now stampeding en mass trying to restore calm and stay put didn't seem like a prudent choice. Everyone was running in random directions and after a few moments pause Connor hightailed it towards the dragons with the intention going around the eggs and heading for the area the wingleaders and guards were..they had weapons right? Seemed like a good idea to him.

In any case the tunnel snake they'd seen had headed off towards the girls...so he really didn't want to head to that side of the sands. Not that that meant anything, who knew how many of the damn things were out here, still surely the dragons and the night seeing whers behind would be able to find them right?Right?

A good Whitemaster had some key traits: they were knowledgeable with their dragon and had the ability to pass on that knowledge in a way that would serve the students well later.

A great Whitemaster, however, had more than that; a great one could remain rock solid at all times.

It was almost silly to say what was and wasn't part of the puzzle that pieced together the spitting image of a "perfect" Whitemaster when, so far, J'aro had been the only Whitemaster; there was no one else to compare to him because there was no one else to compare him against.

He felt, given he was the one and only, it was also part of his job to decide how well he did said job. Normally, he deserved a lot of credit, but he should have known better than to rush into the crowd of reckless candidates.

"ROXYN?!"

An unmistakable wail among many. By some miracle, he would find him damaged, but not dead. Thank Farnath he wasn't dead. J'aro paled at the thought of it as he fast approached the lad, embracing him by the shoulders. (Which was stupid, really, to do in the midst of a riot. He noted this a second later and stopped.)

"Shh, it's all right." No sooner had he lifted the boy up like a bloodied bride than his father shoved his way through mess and against the odds. Not far behind was Arisa, the boy's beloved, lifelong friend. J'aro knew the value of this friendship; he had one he treasured just like it.

To that very friend he handed Roxyn; to that friend he handed him his son.

After that, he was gone, vanishing into the sea of people.

Arisa knew the risks of Standing. She was a candidate. Had this clutch been mothered by the black or fathered by a red, she would have been right down there in the field with Roxyn. Funny how they always ended up together no matter what.

She jumped up the second she knew R'xen was going to, running behind him. For once, she was grateful to not be a pretty, twig of a girl like many of the others -- made it easier to push and shove, it did.

"R'xen!" she called. "They're up there! I can see them!"

Some boy stomped on her foot and ran past her, causing her to lose track of where she was going. When at last she did relocate her friends, J'aro was surrendering Roxyn to his father.

Shards and shells! R'xen swore under his breath as he pulled himself to his feet, the arrival of the tunnel snake only serving to agitate the man further. The candidates out there were in danger! And all because they couldn't hunt some damned tunnel snakes! Panic in the Sands was no good for anybody and the whiterider could only watch as even more glowbaskets were dropped, glows scattering everywhere as the candidates fled for their lives. There was going to be deaths; oh the guards would have to come out here come the end of the hatchlings and try to find the mangled bodies of those poor candidates not quick enough on their feet. R'xen's fingers dug almost painfully into the railing. Roxyn was out there somewhere. Screw tradition rules, there were no dragons out to interfere with and he needed to save his boy!

Before he could call his son's name, however, a loud and very familiar wail echoed into the night. It made the hairs on the back of his neck prickle and he could feel Noladenth's presence stirring against his mind. He pushed her away instantly as he vaulted over the railing, Arisa only seconds behind him. Idly he knew he should have told the girl to stay back but he was more worried about his son. J'aro's voice only spurred the man into motion, R'xen putting on his Game Face and shoving his way through the panicked crowd. A man of the whiterider's girth was not going to be easy to ignore, though that didn't stop several candidates from running into him in their terror. He did his best to ignore them, pushing his way towards the sound of J'aro's voice.

By the time he got there, the Whitemaster had already lifted Roxyn up off of the ground, holding his son in a manner that made R'xen pale. "J'aro..." The whiterider started, his friend's name leaving his lips almost like a prayer. J'aro, however, simply handed Roxyn to him wordlessly and disappeared back into the crowd. Making a mental note to thank him generously later, R'xen shifted his son in his arms and started back the way he'd came, careful to guide Arisa with him.

Ren's concentration and resolve to hold firm and stand fast and be a literal beacon of light wavered with the first scream and the appearance of a tiny firelizard. The first thought which went through her mind was that there were no firelizards allowed on the hatching grounds, and that someone was going to get in a great deal of trouble. Then, at the appearance of a freakishly large tunnel snake, Ren gasped and hoped very hard that it was not someone's pet, because they would not only be in trouble, but they'd be mourning the loss of their pet.

She was thinking these things because it was easier to think them than to scream in utter terror, which would have been her preferred reaction. Except that was not how whiterider candidates were supposed to react in these sorts of situations, and she'd stood at enough hatchings with whites - without Impressing, it was true - that she had something of an easier time of than some might have. Thus she got her a** in gear and moved at speed toward the eggs.

Probably not the smartest move, since she carried no weapon, as per the rules for Impression, but her adrenaline was pumping and it seemed like the thing to do at the time. As she neared the eggs it occurred to her that she was not completely empty-handed. She still had the glowbasket and the glows inside it. Perhaps she could throw the glows at the tunnelsnake and beat it with the basket? Better that, than to allow it to harm the dragonets in their eggs.
