'Punching?' Valentino didn't know what do with himself, he had never punched before! Punching was so... blunt and ineffective during sugary. He pouted for a minute, lips quivering, before the logical part of his brain started to work. Red was a teacher, one whose sharp clawed 'Fear Swipe' he could still feel. If Professor Red said that using fear worked, who was he to doubt her? Taking a quick glance around, Valentino closed his eyes and swung.

OOC:

For the purposes of this exercise, you don't need to wait for those with the lowest HP to roll -- that's only for battle/sparring scenarios whenever you guys go to fight 1vs1. :3 For now, go ahead and roll and RP throwing a punch~

She wasn't sure about the whole thing with the pool now, since the thought had mostly escaped her mind, just looking up at the lights with a crinkled nose-frown. She had found that she did prefer things just a little bit darker. Maybe if the lights were out she would have had the drive to actually 'feel' something.

Hmmm.

Either way, it seemed that Shehk was up to the challenge of punching the air, up on her feet quickly enough (and taking the effort to make sure she wouldn't be crushing her thumb in her attempts), before making the air-punch gesture.

Hmm.... That felt a little bit odd. Not perfect, but not bad either.

Still.... She'd have to try that again.

Punching eh? He had only recently gotten used to standing on two feet, so inflicting damage with his fore legs--err... Hands, was still something new to the black dog. Nevertheless, it was an interesting lesson and he wanted to know more about this FEAR that had been mentioned. So like the others, he obediently followed and positioned himself like Professor Red had instructed.

At first, all he did was watch. Maybe by observing the others, he could get a better idea on how to do this exercise? Hopefully it would. Tybalt was never the patient kind, so repeating the process multiple times would only annoy him.

Curling his fingers into a ball; careful not to wrap his fingers over his thumb ( not that he really had to worry about crushing it ), he pulled his arm back and imagined his fear enveloping his fist, before he quickly thrust it forward in one quick, throw.

Lilura was still rubbing her butt where she had hit the floor after being tagged by the teacher. Man this class sucked! But she would never drop it, that wasn't her style. She sighed a bit as the teacher talked about their Fear. Sure she felt it, she felt both kinds of fear a few minutes ago. But it did make sense, what the teacher was saying.

She walked out onto the floor feeling VERY unconfidant. She was not a fighter. She was a nerd, and quite proud of it! She did not hit people. In fact she enchanted things to hit people for her. But Lilura suspected she wasn't going to get away with that any time soon. She took her place over the water, not feeing very secure there, but did what the teacher instucted them to do.

She balled up her little fists, trying not to wrap her fingers around her thumbs. She looked down at her feet to make sure they were in the right position. She felt completely silly like this, especially since she was hardly intimidating. She tried to imagine her Fear covering her hands like gloves but she had a hard time with it. She had concentrated for so long on using her power on other things that she never practiced on anything on herself. Then she threw a punch.

((I suppose a late edit is better than none??)

Punching? Why that was highly unladylike. Sure, running around waving crude weapons wasn't ladylike either, but attacking someone with a deck of elegantly detailed cards? Oh yes, THAT was at least slightly ladylike. In any regards Belladonna proceeded to ball her fist up as Red instructed. Of course she had tucked her thumb under her fingers and had to pause to untuck said thumb, carefully wrapping it around the top of her fingers. Was that better? Oh bend the knees too? Having never been in a proper fight (she suspected that cat fight between herself and Hemlock didn't count. She had come away with a few bruises and a fistful of her sister's hair, but there was really no punching involved) this meant that Belladonna was having a dreadful time of getting into position.

And then there was that whole deal of doing some actual punching. So with a great flourish of movement (Belladonna felt that doing anything in a subtle fashion was a waste of flourishing) she punched the air in front of her. With a fierce glare she gave a nod to the air that was now properly punched, knowing that it was hurting pretty badly. Take that air!!

Sin moved to line up and tried to make sure she had space on either side of her. She planted her feet firmly and let her legs loosen up a bit, her body was naturally limber. She relaxed and felt the tension ease away from her shoulders even as she brought up her hands and curled them into fists. Her long nails gave her a moments pause before she managed to get her hands into proper fists. The first punch she threw was firm and steady, not very strong but well formed.

She closed her eyes then and took in a deep breath, she wasn't sure what her fear was exactly but she tried to imagine something dark like her shadow covering her fist. She exhaled and threw the punch, this one was quite a bit weaker, mainly because Sin was still a tad clueless as to what exactly her fear enhanced punch was supposed to do.

At least her form was still straight and relaxed, if something hit her she would probably be able to block it, or try. She looked at the professor hoping for some more helpful tips.

Fingers...this way? No...not that way, this way! Maybe?! Knees...oh jack how many degrees?! Oh not too stiff! Too stiff! Emily fussed and fumbled for several minutes just trying to position herself correctly.

"Just throw a punch, fairies take you!" Amused at first, Mr. Monty was rapidly losing patience with all this ********.

"B-but I want to do this right!"

"You're just making it worse. Relax already!"

The witch tries her hardest to relax a bit. Possibly too much. She was definitely starting to look stressed out. Possibly trying you hardest to relax isn't really the best way to go about relaxing.

With a sigh, the cat wandered behind her, "Imagine one of your brothers in front of you."

"...what?"

"The one that told you if you communicate only in barks and howls for a month you'd get to change into a wolf."

"...Abacus."

"Yeah, that one. Did you turn into a wolf after a month."

"No I did not!"

"Remembered how he laughed? How all the kids in made fun of you all month?"

"That...that was not very nice of them!" Focused on the memory of that time, Emily's body began to finally relax. Her hands fisted at her side, thumbs-out.

"Bring up your fists, witch."

"Right!"

"And hit that smug, smiling face of his."

"Yes!"

For a first try, it wasn't bad. Monty had never really liked that brother much, either, and wouldn't mind taking a swing at the p***k himself.

Red paced in front of them, nodding at their attempts. "In Halloweentown, there are some folk who, when in a disagreement, prefer to come to blows. The sooner you know how to tap into your Fear to fight back, the less likely you'll wind up on a cold slab in the cemetery waiting for someone to come claim you." The werewolf stopped to stare before adding, "Death does not walk in Halloweentown often. When you collapse and there is no Fear-Healer around, you are brought to the cemetery and are laid there to rest. Your Fear usually will slowly recuperate and restore you, however if someone interferes..." A clawed hand was waved in a careless gesture. "In the end, you are better off sticking to sparring only on-campus where a professor, your friends, or the gnomes will haul you to Nurse Cricket's office." Sure she was repeating herself, but perhaps the seriousness of it would sink in?

As she neared the end of the line, she winced. "No, no -- I understand that you Reapers prefer to use weapons, but what will happen when you're seperated from them? Lilura, bend your knees a bit more and focus. Valkjo... er, can I just call you Valk? Valk and Sin, fold your wings in tighter to your bodies and keep your chins up. Your wings can easily be used against you in battle -- try to keep them as close to your body as possible, but don't be afraid to unfurl them for a quick strike. You can focus your Fear around your wings just like your fist and do the same amount of damage -- that goes for all of you. When you are armed with a weapon, your weapon itself will not harm anyone. It is the Fear you focus that will."

"So even if you have the best axe on sale," Red added as she turned around to walk down the line again, "You can do less damage than with it than you can punch. When fighting in a spar, the natural Fear of Halloweentown interferes with logic. For instance, an axe is used to fell a tree, yes? When in a spar or battle, that same axe that can fell a tree with one blow might not also chop off someone's limb. That's just how Fear works -- don't hurt yourselves trying to figure it out, trust me."

"Good, now do it again. Focus this time! Like this!" The teacher stood sideways to her students and threw a punch. "Don't let your arm linger in the open air -- that's an invitation for your opponent to grab it."

------------------------------------
MISSES, DAMAGE, AND YOU:

All right! Now that you know how to start a battle and what the HP values are, it's time to learn how to get rid of your opponent's HP value. Become familiar with rolling two, six-sided dice: that's the meat and potatoes of this battle system.

Now, go look at your post. Specifically, look at the total.
If the total is equal to or less than 6, your character was unable to focus their Fear and damage their opponent. Or perhaps your character missed. Or your opponent was able to block/dodge the damage. Either way, you did a grand total of 0 damage.
If the total is 7 or higher, you did damage!

How to figure out damage:
All first year students can hit their target at 6. To figure out the damage, subtract 6 from your total.
If I rolled 11. 11 - 6 = 5 damage.
If I rolled a 6, then 6 - 6 = 0 damage.
If I rolled a 2, then 2 - 6 = -4 damage. Negative damage = 0.

Please roll a two six-sided dice. Calculate the damage your punch would have done. In addition, calculate your previous dice roll's damage.

Roll result: 2, 1. Total of 3. That's -3, meaning Red is an awful teacher and didn't focus her Fear for that punch. Good job, Red. 8D

Hmm.. First punch hadn't been so bad. In fact, it was much better than he could expect from someone like himself. However, the second time..?

Ahh, there! Yep! That was more the results he was expecting! He had lost his concentration completely and as a result, failed in his attempt of a second FEAR enhanced punch. Oops...

It was easy enough for the chupacabra to keep repeating the motions, not really listening to what the teacher was saying. She didn't have anything that she was swinging at anyway, so she just kept going.

At the very least she didn't look out of place amongst the other students.

((First punch: 1
Second punch: 3 ))

The first punch had been playing, getting the feel of it and trying to understand how exactly to throw a punch. But concentrating on it, on crunching the eyebrows together, made it all the more real. This time when Belladonna punched she could feel and ooooooh~ Wasn't that feeling just absolutely delicious?! Oh yes, this FEAR thing really had a bit of fun tacked on!
