Why was this soul not getting it?! No, he had no yearning to know anyone! Why would he? There was really no reason to, as far as he could see. His entire existence had been like this, and he was none the worse for it, so why should it change?!
He said as much to the talkative one.
"Look, supposing I did want to make friends with people. What would happen to me? I'd spend eternity ferrying my friends away to a place where I'd never see them again. In my existence people don't hang about for very long. And the souls that do hang about... Well, they don't stay friendly forever. I'm happier having no friends, because I don't know loneliness either that way."
Then he actually looked at her face. "Will you stop looking like that?! I'm not a pity case! I'm not human or mortal like you are, I don't need your pathetic companionship. Now what have you caught?" he asked irritably, hoping she had a coin so he could finish this job as soon as possible.

Myrtle's expression turned angered and hurt as she crossed her arms over her chest, the net dangling haphazardlessly over the water. "Well you certainly have anger down." She bit her tongue as he called her companionship pathetic. "Maybe if you weren't so sour you'd have more people willing to visit! Or, perhaps, those that do hang around don't stay friendly forever because they're stuck with a ferryman who would rather wallow in numbness than dare to feel anything." She shot him a glare, only half caring that she made sense before jerking the net back and peering inside to see what had caught. The corners of her mouth turned downward in a frown, staring down at a wooden coin that's surface was painted with yellow muck that was chipping away from what might have been years of tumbling uncer the current. She pulled it out and tossed it at him. "It's wooden, does that count?" Her voice was still soaked with anger.

Charon sighed. Souls were so touchy. Why didn't they ever get it that he wasn't being personal? He wasn't ever personal about anything or anyone.
So he ignored her anger.
"No, that doesn't count. A real coin, please."
He returned his gaze to the water. This soul obviously thought that "unfriendly" souls meant grumpy ones. He was more concerned with the souls that were getting restless from an eternity on these souls... And the ones that swum in the waters were the worst.

She rolled her eyes, sitting down a letting out a sigh. "That was sarcasm. I knew it wouldn't work." She turned away from him again, dipping the net into the water again to try to collect a coin. The sooner the better it seems. . . She frowned, watching the water blankly and letting her hands work on autopilot.

Charon watched her, almost amused at how she was so insulted by his apathy. Souls were such weird creatures.
Which is why they got dangerous when they lasted in limbo for too long. He kept watching the water warily. If one of those souls came, he wasn't going to be caught unawares.

"Something else coming," he commented idly a few minutes later, watching a trail on the surface of the water.

Myrtle didn't feel like speaking at the moment, so she turned her attention to the part of the water he was talking about. Probably another coin. She thought to herself, leaning forward a bit to get a good shot at it with her net. Unaware of the true dangers of limbo, she leaned forwards a bit more, making her upper body hover over the chilling water as she tried to fish out what she hoped to be her fair.

Charon started feeling uneasy when Myrtle didn't retrieve a coin immediately. For metal, either it got caught in the net or it didn't. Only things that could swim would hover, especially in the current.
He hefted his punting pole, just in case...

"Is it a coin?" he asked, but he wasn't being greedy. Just because he had apathy to spare over healthy souls didn't mean he wanted to see them being attacked by those kinds of souls...

{[lol just had to say: I saw Charon in Xena today. XD! I like yours better. Their version reminded me of Miracle Max from Princess Bride. They aren't the same person though. Charon was actually played by the same guy who plays Iolus. . . into the Dork Forest I go XD ]}
Myrtle leaned forward a bit more, squinting her eyes. "I think so, it looks like-" She stopped in midsentence as a hand flew out of the water suddenly and grabbed onto, gripping tightly before it was joined by another. Before her brain could process the appropriate reaction, Myrtle's eyes widened and her mouth opened in a loud scream, frozen with confused terror.

[[... Huh?]]

Charon didn't hesitate. Gripping his punting pole tightly he brought it flying through the air in an arch and whacked the hands on their wrists, trying to force them to let go. He brought the pole back again and sent its tip crashing into the water, aimed for the head somewhere down there.
"Get to the shore!" he ordered Myrtle, bending to help her get disentangled from the hands that were grabbing hair. A hand that he managed to pry loose came up and grabbed his hair, pulling his head back, and he winced before wielding his pole again and smacking the elbow attached to the hand that had him.
"Get to the shore!"

{[XD Have you ever seen/heard of the show Xena: Warrior Princess?]}

Myrtle acted before thinking, gripping the forearm of the hand that had took hold of Charon. "Let go!" She demanded the soul, tugging on it. The abandoned net got pulled under water, but that was the least of her worries. A pair of hands latched onto her shoulder, dragging her closer to the water while she tried to free Charon. Inevitably, she was pulled from the boat and into the river. The souls seemed pleased with this and released the ferryman to pull her under. Terrified, Myrtle kicked and stuggled with the hands.

{[ugh, sorry. not my best post. I'm really tired. XD I probably should have waited to reply.]}

[[Don't worry, that gives me something to work with!
And no, never heard of it.]]

"I told you to get to shore!" Charon sighed as he felt himself being released and watched Myrtle get dragged under. Hefting his pole he splashed into the river himself and dove under to try and make sense out of the tangle of souls. He didn't want to hit Myrtle while he was attacking the other things.
After a fraction of a second he brought his head back above water to breathe, then reached down and grabbed the thinning hair of one of the crazed souls, forcefully dragging it to the surface. Whirling his pole around he whacked at the soul a good couple times, making it hiss at him until he released it and it swum away.
He dove back under the water to see how Myrtle was doing.

{[lol well that's good.
And oh. XD well that explains a few things. Xena is a show about the ancient times, Charon was in one of the shows]}

Myrtle had two souls dragging her towards the bottom depths of the river while she struggled to free herself, fearing the outcome should she fail. Fighting for all she was worth, she kicked at the nearest soul until it gave up and hurried away. When she tried to do the same to the second one, the soul turned to her and gave a chilling shriek, obviously upset. However, instead of swimming away, it tore at her as if to rip her apart and gain her soul.

Honestly, there were days were you just felt like retiring.
Swimming to where Myrtle was floundering Charon readied his pole. He couldn't whack or slam because of fluid friction, making movement in water sluggish and such, so he had to settle for poking at the soul viciously in the ribs and spine, hoping it would get distracted and turn to him instead of to Myrtle.

Shore, he mouthed, aiming a poke at the soul's skull as he did so. Shore. Get to shore.

"I can't leave you here alone." Myrtle said, shaking her head. Even if she could swim fast enough, the guilt would make her go back. The soul turned angril to Charon, grabbing at his pole and attacking.

Charon closed his eyes briefly in mental anguish. Boy, souls were messed up.
Then he was in a wrestling match with a truly messed-up soul over his pole. Luckily for him he was far more skilled with it and was able to twist it out of the other's weaker grasp. But while he was in the water his movements were too sluggish to do any really effective fighting.
They had to get to the shore. Then they could move on to another river, leave these souls alone.
Grabbing Myrtle by her wrist he tried swimming for the surface, hoping that the kicking and swinging of his swimming limbs would prevent any more souls from grabbing on.
