"They went right on living here just as they'd always done, in the houses they could no longer see and on streets which had vanished, because nobody noticed a thing. And that's the way they have lived to this very day."
"Hasn't anyone told them?" asked Milo.
"It doesn't do any good," Alex replied, "for they can never see what they're in too much of a hurry to look for."

Digging through my Earthseed poems.... Aha!

Are you Earthseed?
Do you believe?
Belief will not save you.
Only actions
Guided and shaped
by belief and knowledge
Will save you.
Belief
Initiates and guideds action-
Or it does nothing.

-Octavia E. Butler

*hugs Parable of the Talents* heart I agree whole-heartedly with this quote. You can't just rely on "god" to save you from things, you have to work through life. No matter what you believe, it won't do you any good unless you act upon it.

William Shakespeare
Our doubts are traitors,
And make us lose the good we oft might win
By fearing the attempt.

Character cannot be developed in ease and quiet. Only through experience of trial and suffering can the soul be strengthened, ambition inspired, and success achieved.

People seldom improve when they have no other model but themselves to copy after.
-Oliver Goldsmith

This quote is one that kept me going through most of my high school career.

I love this one! Reminds me of some people I've known who have made exactly this mistake. Tends to create a stagnant, unchanging person who walks a path of self-destruction. Very hard to watch, especially if the person is a friend. sad

This relates back to the Goldsmith qoute

"You are as only as good as those whom you play" Personally I think that relates to everything from chess to fighting to life. But as stated before, I'm crazy.

It's a sign of insanity to do the exact same thing over and over again and to expect something different to happen.

I agree. sad
This is why I am an avid student of life -- if I can learn enough about life, I can pass on what wisdom I have aquired.
Hopefully I can make a difference.

Usually we affect others more than we think we do. A lot of it is subconscious. Most of the time you won't know you've made a difference... most people don't give out thanks for this sort of thing

You're right - we have much more of an effect on people than we realize.
Understanding our actions and their effects can help us when dealing with others.
And it's true that people don't often hand out thanks for this sort of thing - but if you watch them closely, you can see the difference you've made.
Knowing that you've made a difference is often gratification enough. smile

I've worked at summer camps for the past three years and I find this all to be especially true with kids. It's amazing in the ways that they can be influenced. Unfortunately there aren't always enough good influences as there are bad ones.

"Only as we rise, do we encounter opposition."

~ Frederick Douglass.

I really like this quote. It's simple and to the point and illustrates clearly the fact that the only way to achieve something is to face the troubles that come with it.

The mediocrew teacher tells. The good teacher explains. The superior teacher demonstrates. The great teacher inspires.
