Fanning?” Xiu asked, curious despite himself. “I haven’t tried that yet.” Thoughtfully, he followed after Lien, surprised and rather pleased that he’d met someone so quickly. However, he couldn’t help but chuckle delicately behind his hand when Lien lowered his voice as he’d said his name. Had the male just…copied him? Xiu wasn’t sure but he kept smiling the entire way, the sound of Lien’s really deep, “manly” voice too funny to ignore.

“It’s nice to meet you, Nguyen Lien.” Xiu replied politely, a smile still plastered to his face as he was ushered into a seat that was beside Lien’s group. He nodded to them all, feeling strangely more confident with Lien beside him. “It’s all nice to meet you all as well.” He added, giving each new face a pointed look, wanting to hear their names.

(too many posts! gah~ sorry about everything, i'm trying to catch up ...)

Class was going to start soon, Liu was quite sure about that. More and more students had started to flood their way into the classroom (oh my god how do I deal with this) and a lot had managed to stumble upon Liu's trio. In truth, the Chinese boy was beginning to feel ... frustrated. The endless introductions were tiring - to say the least; all the new people were suffocating, and though class was starting, nobody seemed to want to focus. It was a new concept for Liu, because as his life went, when an adult told you to do something, you did it.

"Hello, Cais~," He gestured weakly, smiling as should be expected. Liu hadn't really noticed the boy, but he had caught a whiff of the name - though he had thought it had been Site or something. Either way, now that Amane had mentioned him, Liu was sure the name was right - after all, Amane wasn't really known for his ... mistakes. As the Professor started to gather together materials and get ready for class, two more students rushed in, both looking frazzled and very late. The first was a boy who had somehow managed to squeeze into a spot next to them (though really, Liu would've thought all those spots were gone ...) and then greeted them rather friendlily. "Isayu. I am Jing Liu." Liu smiled and dipped his head again. What was that about being classmates for the rest of the year? An odd thing to say, that was for sure. "Mhm.." Liu said absent-mindedly, suddenly turning his head to see what Lien was doing.

Apparently Lien had brought over another boy - wonderful. "Shi Xiu. I like your name," Liu grinned thoughtfully. It had been a while since he had met someone else his age with a Chinese name, and that was nice. "I'm Jing Liu~" Actually, Liu was beginning to wonder if he sounded weird, because he had probably said that about nine times. In the past ten minutes. Sad.

Blinking, Liu returned his attention to the board looked back briefly. "If you don't mind, I think we should pay attention to the Professor - you know, class is starting and all that. So. Yes." The small Chinese boy wasn't used to telling people what to do, but he didn't like displeasing his elders, a practice that had extended for generations within his family and many others. He smiled and turned away, accidentally nudging Amane with his elbow and sighing lightly. "Sorry," Liu murmured, grimacing with his clumsiness.

Sitting up in his seat, Liu started to pinch the bridge of his nose unknowingly. It was a habit - a habit that signified he was irritated.

What with all his checking up on people, Lien hadn't even noticed that class had begun. Feeling his parents' shame from afar, he clenched his fists slightly and focused on the teacher. The professor was arranging items in front of her and listing ingredients they would be needing today to make their first simple recipe. Lien began writing the list down to send to his family later. The dish wasn't from West Farmlands and they had specifically requested he send them foreign recipes.

It seemed like the professor was planning for them to make a cold asparagus salad, which was good in Lien's mind at least because it meant he wouldn't have to worry about Liu and Toshiro cooking for long periods of time. They would only need asparagus, soy sauce, sugar, water, sesame seed oil, and garlic. The professor rattled off advice about how to prepare the food, and then after about fifteen minutes, she let the class work. Lien went over and got the ingredients she had listed and some more for Liu, who was beginning to look a bit tired, Amane, and Xiu. Seeing as that was all he could carry, he went back again and brought some more back for the rest of the group before finally sitting down to work.

Amane tossed his hello into the mix, responding to the boy he had also never seen before; Makami Isayu, he gave as his name. "Welcome, Isayu; I am Amane. May you be content here." Amane nodded, as he seemed to be fond of doing after a greeting, and regarded the boy for a moment longer.

He was content that Lien was taking care of welcoming the new people, as well; it made Amane feel like Lien had been the right choice for a first friend, the way that Lien seemed to want to treat others well and with kindness. Lien also seemed to be more content with their trio, but that only made Amane respect the gestures even more. When Lien invited others in, despite being more comfortable with the trio, it made Amane feel as though there was kindness within Lien. Kindness which Amane would shelter, nourish and foster to the best of his abilities as a friend.

Amane wasn't sure if he'd caught the name of the additional boy, as they were just shy of his typical range. Amane waved as soon as Lien had led him back, a gentle motion of the hand which looked as though it required very little energy. He thought he had heard something about the boy's hair, but dismissed it as mis-hearing something on his part; why would Lien and Shi Xiu be talking about hair, of all things?... It struck Amane as so illogical that it could simply not be possible. Especially since he hadn't been able to make out the boy's name. It was convenient that Lien introduced him to the group when he led him back. "Shi Xiu? May you find yourself welcome here," Amane greeted him, nodding. "I am Amane."

Toshiro was responsive again, and Amane couldn't help but let the glitter of amusement show in his eyes when the boy stroked his chin as if in thought. Amane tilted his head to the side. "Toshiro... are you alright, really? It's okay, you're okay here." Amane looked around, wishing that he was at home, with his tea supplies. He could brew Toshiro, and all his group for that matter, a tea which would calm everyone.

"Liu, I'm sorry; I hadn't heard him speak, I didn't realize we were waiting to start." Amane regarded Liu with concern; was Liu doing alright? He seemed upset. "If you need a moment away from the crowds... I'm sure you could step out into the hall for a moment for some air. Think about it, alright? I could come with you if you need," Amane leaned in so that he could whisper quietly enough that only Liu could hear him.

"Thank you for the supplies, Lien," Amane added, having leaned back into his own space. He began to prepare his station, looking at the items and trying to associate them to some memory he had of his parents' kitchen: almost nothing looked similar.

(omg trying to catch up orz)

Before Dai could settle into his seat he was caught off guard by the subtle invitation of the one he had just talked to. The boy's eyes lit up almost instantly. He timidly walked towards them once again and stopped in beside the group, grabbing a seat nearby and sitting down quietly.

He started to go through the list he had prepared before that spoke of social etiquette. Of course! It was so rude of him to just walk away like that. He looked for some kind of opening to introduce himself but they all seemed preoccupied with others. But Dai opened his mouth, not really caring if anyone was listening, "Nice to meet you all, I am Dai Wu." With that he felt very satisfied once again with himself and turned his attention towards the table in front of him with his hands on his lap, prim and proper. The young teen noticed they already had some pages of recipes scattered in their table and some of the materials already spread out. Some of them were already fixing whatever concoction the professor had mentioned. Dai was clueless, he had never cooked before! And because of his attention on the present company he had missed what the professor had said. What a disaster.

All Dai could do now was mimic the actions of the others, gathering some materials and attempting to do whatever he was supposed to do here. He sighed, when will he finally get something right today?

"I take no issue with that, so you are welcome to it." She chuckled softly, and the curve of one dark finger was raised to press over her lips, stiffing the laughter to something quiet and polite. It was odd for her to get along so well with someone right out of the gate, but Veryuu was proving very easy to talk to, which was rare, at least for Shin-Mu. She generally had a hard time with small talk, and came off as awkward or cold, though she was usually approached by other lunarians that were in no way similar to herself. The young man before her seemed to have a similar way of thanking, as well as upbringing.

Her skirts smoothed, she tightened her hold on the books pressed to her chest. "I see no reason why it would have to be. You're in the academy now, so I'm sure we'll see each other often." A strand of rosy blonde hair had slipped from the elegant knot at the back of her crown and was slipping down to tickle along her cheek. She tucked it back behind the point of her finned ear, smoothing the pale coif with the back of a finger.

"No,I would imagine not. Skills in weapons are very widely known in our society, where soul magic is not. If I had more experience with a blade beyond my sword dancing, and was not destined to walk the path of a dead soul priest, then don't think I would have thought about it either. It just wouldn't have occurred to me." She smiled gently, then let her gaze dart away momentarily. Embarrassed that she'd been rambling. A warm wash of cover even darkened her cheek, but it faded quickly, and she returned her gaze to him.

She nodded in response to his mention of her abilities being a gift, she'd always believed the same. "It is, my family and I are most proud." His tone had dipped though, and she couldn't help the perplexed curiosity that touched her features. She wasn't certain how to respond to that change of tone though, so focused instead on the words themselves, and responding to them. "There is the occasional nagging or vengeful spirit that insists upon following me, but the majority of those I deal with are pleasant. Two in particular I'm quite fond of. One is my music tutor and guardian, his spirit is attached my dizi. The other is an elderly woman that has played nanny to me since I was a babe. They've taken it upon themselves to watch over and raise me." She left it at that. The neglect of her busy parents was no one's business but her own. She begrudged the loose of that parental guidance and attention, but understood the necessity of it. Her parents were important political players in the Noble Retainer, and she was proud of their work, proud to be their daughter.

A pursing of lips followed her words, and she ducked her head in a gentle bow of apology. "Forgive me, I've been rambling." How embarrassing.

The new introductions were over easily, everyone seemingly fitting in - puzzle pieces that had arranged themselves around the original three pieces; Lien, Amane, and himself. And yet somehow - Liu felt wrong. It was at these times he despised his weak body, his small body, his body that overexerted itself and always, always, always required the help of others. Today Liu had spent more emotional energy talking to all these people than he'd ever tried doing before - and in effect, now he was drained. Tired. Weak. Pathetic. Sometimes Liu thought back on his dreams and tried to remember how he could have ever thought he would be able to become a Fighter - how in the world had he ever thought he could get over this all encompassing weakness?

It bothered him. Liu tried to ignore the feeling (or lack of feeling, whichever best suited the situation), and turned to Amane, who was being helpful as always, and smiled. Amane was a good boy, he really was - both Lien and Amane always tried to welcome new people, be kind, and respectful. Liu found that incredibly touching, and a spark of pride flashed its way through his chest as he glanced at both boys. They were important to him - more important than he'd ever imagined.

"It's okay," Liu said quietly. "I get like this sometimes," He nodded, "Nothing to worry about."

It really was nothing to worry about - sure, he could sometimes feel weak, but barely anything ever happened that was really severe. And after all, Liu was always comforted after a cup of hot tea. Sadly though, he didn't have any tea with him at the moment, but the people around him - his friends, companions, and allies - they were all enough, he supposed. Substitutions for tea.

"Thanks for the supplies~" He smiled gratefully, and made a semi-successful attempt to sound confident and happy as usual. Cold asparagus salad wasn't anything he'd ever made before - actually, to tell the truth, he'd never made anything with asparagus. He would be fine, though - his mother had taught him enough about improvisation. Watching another boy walk about and sit next to them (another Chinese boy, it seemed), Liu was the first to greet him. "Welcome Dai Wu, my name is Jing Liu!" Liu had no idea he sounded sort of fake, but he really ... just ... it didn't matter anymore.

Thank you, Liu. Amane.” Xiu smiled, inclining his head in greeting. “A pleasure to meet you both.” Before he could continue further, it seemed that the class was being whipped in a frenzy as the professor decided to start the lecture. Xiu’s attention went to the woman for a moment before it wavered and settled back on Liu again. There seemed to be something upsetting the boy and he wasn’t sure what. Xiu frowned, unable to ponder things further as his thoughts were interrupted by Lien bringing in the supplies for the salad.

Jolted, Xiu looked up at the other with a blink before he regained himself. “Thanks.” He said to Lien, taking his own items and arranging them in an orderly manner. He may not have known how to good extravagant dishes, but he didn’t know how to cut things and make a salad. Slowly and with purpose, he began peel the garlic, breaking the cloves with the flat of his knife.

Every so often his eyes would dart to Liu and Dai. He knew it wasn’t any of his business but he couldn’t help himself and offered, “We’re making a cold asparagus salad.” He explained to Dai in a kindly manner, hoping also to relax Liu’s seeming jitters. “You know, some people say that cooking could be considered therapeutic. What do you think?’ Xiu asked conversationally, looking at everyone in the group now.

Lien nodded to the people thanking him, and to Dai before bending over him work, chopping up his own materials slowly and carefully. After he washed his hands, he marked the asparagus carefully with a finger and cut it accordingly.

"I enjoy cooking," he noted quietly at Xiu's remark. His sisters used to ask him for desserts all the time, and he tended to spoil them, so he had got plenty of practice at a very limited array of dishes. He wasn't quite sure what 'therapeutic' meant, but his statement was neutral enough anyway. "Cooking is a useful thing to do, and it keeps your hands busy." From Lien, that was a glowing recommendation, considering that his two ways of evaluating a hobby were based on its usefulness and how busy it kept him. He sliced at the garlic now, adding, "My sisters enjoy it when I cook for them, that's important too," in a sudden fit of inspiration. He was trying hard to be conversational so long as everyone else was making the effort, and though he wasn't good at it, at least he wasn't talking about hair anymore.

However, until someone said something else, he was now officially out of remarks to make, so he fell silent again and stared down his garlic while he minced it. The chatting was more difficult than the cooking so far, and considering that he wasn't being graded on the chatting, he considered that a good thing.

Amane wasn't completely convinced that Liu was alright. He inclined his head to demonstrate he had heard Liu's answer, but he wasn't about to just leave it as it was. Without a word, instead of beginning to chop up the asparagus, Amane rose from his seat and went into the cupboards. He found everything he needed to heat water, and he found some loose leaf tea. Perhaps it was there for adding to other foods, or for preparing alone for cleansing, but Amane figured that was what they could use. He tried to be as discreet as possible and brought the tea supplies to their table. As he took care of heating the water, he busied himself preparing the salad. It was simple enough, something his parents had made before.

When the water had heated, he wrapped the leaves up in one of the clean cloths and knotted the top, letting it steep in the water. It wasn't the fanciest tea, but the leaves smelled fresh and he figured they could use some. He hadn't been able to find enough cups, but he had found a few of them and a small bowl or two.

"I think there is something graceful about the preparation of food, when one is skilled," Amane added, responding to Dai. He appreciated the boy's attempt at conversation, though he was reluctant to add to his statement. He pictured his parents when Dai had asked that, and he couldn't help but miss his family. He realized, suddenly, why he had wanted a trio so particularly. He had, for the longest time, known only whatever friendship his parents provided, but that was always tainted by the need they felt to keep him in check and well-parented. Having Liu and Lien was like fulfilling his trio, which he was most used to, but redefining it in a way that was more appropriate and comfortable. Amane felt a little ridiculous making the comparison, but since he didn't voice it, he didn't feel that he needed to be very embarassed.

"You're right, Lien; it is those things, as well," Amane nodded his approval, taking the cloth with the tea leaves out of the pot he had used to heat the water. "Would anyone like tea? I'm afraid it's not of the quality some may be used to, but... I suspect it will relax and calm the nerves, regardless."

Amane poured himself a little, not to serve himself before the others, but in a sign of good faith: he took the first sip. It was a little too hot to drink comfortably, still, but it had steeped long enough to taste good without bitterness. It tasted gentle, like perhaps an oolong, but it seemed to have a hint of plum. "If you'd like some, you may all help yourselves, or I can pour you some," Amane finished, nudging the water closer, putting down his cup to fill the other cups he was able to find, though he left the bowls should a couple of them want to pour their own. It was simply easier to pour the tea into the bowls than the cups, which was why Amane filled the cups himself. He didn't appear to have gotten in trouble for the tea so far, so he was hopeful that it had gone unnoticed.

It seemed that the boy was settling into the group slowly and this pleased him. He would tell his parents about this event back home, and they would be surprised that he had actually fit (somehow) into a group. Dai chuckled inwardly as he thought of this.

Dai snapped back to reality when Jing introduced himself, giving a half smile and nodding energetically at the other in response. "Nice to meet you." He was just happy at the moment that the was getting included in the group. Happiness mixed with nervousness, unfortunately, as he was truly concerned in making a good impression. But it seemed that he did not have to worry so much. These people seemed very friendly, the atmosphere reminded him so much of his brothers and their friends. A situation Dai was very unfamiliar with.

When Lien spoke, Dai listened intently, eying the scattered ingredients in the table. And that was when he noticed he wasn't doing a single thing to help. "Cold asparagus salad...I see." he grabbed the garlic that was nearest to him, washed it quickly and then began to separate them from each other. His method was careless and messy. It couldn't be helped though, Dai had never touched food unless it was mealtime. "I've... never really cooked before."the young teen said while peeling off the cloves of the garlic, his brows knitting a little because of the strong aroma.

His eyes looked over to Amane, watching him pour tea in some small cups. He hurriedly bowed his head slightly at the boy, "Thank you for the tea." he muttered.

He was late.

It wasn't his fault though, rather his father's. The old man had suddenly decided that Kyung would stay home from the Academy. Like hell he was going to spend the whole day with his father. After a quick argument, several broken vases, a broken sliding door, and a small fire, the cobalt Lunarian had won his first fight ever against his father. It was a feeling that made him feel masculine for the first time and his elation was evident in the way he walked down the grand halls of the academy.

Making his way down the corridor of the esteemed building, he paused when something black flashed by his peripheral vision and turn around the corner. Silvery orbs narrowing, he quickly jerked his head in hopes of catching a better view of what had just passed by him. He looked in the direction of his classroom and back at the hall the silhouette had entered.

He was already late. Why did it matter if he was late by a few more minutes?

Taking noiseless steps, he ran down the length of the hallway. Nothing. Or was it? Something flashed by his peripheral vision again disappeared into the left fork of the hallway. Looking both way, Kyung ran down the hallway.

Something was here. Something that did not belong in the neutral grounds of the academy.

Running faster, he stopped when he reached the archery field. Nothing. Absolutely nothing other than the class that was currently going on. Catching the gaze of the teacher, Kyung retreated back into the building. Yes, he had certainly seen something. He had seen it twice in a matter of seconds.

Walking to his history class, he paused before the door trying to think of a good excuse for his tardiness. He took a deep breath and knocked on the door and waited. No response. A puzzled expression flitted on his face and he pushed the sliding door open.

Empty.

Not a soul was to be seen. Yet, from the open textbooks and seats that weren't pushed under the desks it meant that people had been here. Yet, there was still an order to the classroom that could not come with a sudden evacuation. Like the class had suddenly been called out for something important.

But where?

He stepped back out the classroom and into the hallway. Perhaps... he should have stayed home today. He was suddenly getting a very bad feeling about coming to the academy against his father's orders.

Xiu smiled at Lien, finding the male’s comment to be rather insightful. “It is important that people enjoy the food you cook and it definitely is an art.” He agreed with a light laugh, moving to the asparagus so that he could begin to cut up all the pieces evenly. Everything then got dumped into a bowl of water to be cleaned. “And busy hands do keep one occupied. Do you…have many sisters, Lien?” Xiu asked pleasantly, feeling that Lien had run out of things to say. If Xiu was good at anything, it was keeping people talking when he wanted them to.

Still continuing the careful chopping, Xiu watched as Amane started to prepare some tea. Without knowing it, Xiu found himself watching fixedly for the drink to be finished. He’d realized that Bai Hu had distracted him from having his tea earlier as well.

Smells wonderful.” Xiu smiled once the tea was finished. He set down his knife and reached for one of the cups, nodding to Amane gratefully as he took a sip. “Delicious.” He sighed happily at the light taste of plum on his tongue, salad forgotten for the moment. “You should try some.” This was said to Lien as Xiu nudged a cup slightly in the other's direction.
PostPosted: Sat Aug 07, 2010 10:24 pm

Lien murmured a "Thank you," to Amane but didn't take any tea. He was focused on his preparation, and the only thing that pulled him from it was when Xiu addressed him. Lien liked to focus on one task at a time, but living in a big house like his, there was usually always somebody around who he had to listen to while he worked. He could multitask as far as responding to others while doing simple jobs, but anything more than that was troublesome to him. He didn't feel comfortable unless he felt like he was being thorough with something, anything less than thorough wasn't beneficial to anyone.

Pausing for a moment so he could look up at Xiu, he replied, "I have four sisters, three little and one older." He went back to chopping for a moment, but his mid was now on his sisters rather than the asparagus. "They could be demanding, but they're my sisters, so it's fine." He said this somewhat defensively, like speaking aloud about his sisters had reminded him how far away his family was and he suddenly felt vulnerable. His chopping pattern was still steady, but he had to really try to focus on it to make sure he didn't make a mistake for a few melancholy moments.

Xiu brought him back from this somewhat somber mood, and he nodded. He had just finished all of his chopping, so he took a short break to obediently accept a cup of tea with another murmur of gratitude to Amane. He blew on it carefully, as he didn't like hot beverages to hit his tongue too soon, and then took a tiny sip. It was good, but still scalding. Lien bristled a bit at the sensation, then set his cup aside until it cooled some more. Taking a pot, he started the water to boil his asparagus in and looked over at Xiu. Making another stab at conversation while the water warmed up, he asked, "Do you have siblings?" Once again he was parroting the other boy, but Xiu didn't seem to mind so far, and Lien didn't know what else to do.

Cais's mind had checked out of the lesson before it even began. A frown found it's way onto his face and was determined to stick. The low murmur of words beside him jostled his reaction when his name was spoken, which he responded with a simple nod of the head, keeping a disgruntled look he watched as the lesson plan was given. How he had wished the morning had gone according to the original plan, but even with every ounce of energy he had to put into wishing he knew it would be better spent coping with the irregularity.

Snapping back to an aware state he heard the tea cups moving across the work station, turning his head he blinked a few times, but the sight brought a smile to his face. Watching the new students act so warmly to each other was something not even he had the opportunity for when coming to the Academy. But relishing in his own history would have to wait. As a cup made it's way closer to him he took it gently, "Thank you, Amane. I'm sorry for being so quiet... my day has not gone entirely as planned." He made a disdainful look towards the ingredients before him, shaking his head and sipping the tea.

"This is wonderful." He said, surprised in the fact a soothing sensation had begun working its way through his body. Setting the cup down gently he stared back at his ingredients, grabbing a knife and beginning to cut the asparagus. Glancing back at the others he saw as they shared the tea and further conversation. Truly this group has a lot in common.

It felt to Cais that he was listening to old friends go on about days past. He envied that connection... but now his attention turned back to the lesson at hand. Though he knew his completion of it meant nothing to his own lessons, after all it was just a placeholder for his history class, he was still determined to prove himself... or at least prove he could make a dish on his own. He remembered back to the teacher who had demonstrated the procedure. "Oh!" He exclaimed, taking a look at Lien, "Thank you for the supplies. That's..." he searched for the words, "very kind of you."

Cais was trying desperately to remember all of the new faces. Normally it took him a good month to get names and faces synchronized with each other in his head. Now he was attempting it all in one day. Sighing, he shot a glance towards Lien's hands, then took quickly to the same style of cutting. He was at his clumsiest and stopped after a few chops, setting the sharp tool aside and staring at the awkwardly cut bits.

This was torture to him. Listening to the others speak of enjoyment of the art of cooking confused him. Glass had always been his specialty, he enjoyed that media of expression. Though he noted a similarity of artistic expressions, they were two worlds apart in his head. Aggravated he took another look to his neighbors, trying to take in tips and tricks that they might show him. "I... don't seem to understand so well." He muttered lightly, hoping to make an excuse for any of them that might notice his wandering eyes.
