Ah yes! I have officially started my own NaNoWriMo (although I feel bad for missing the actual month) and so far, its been successful! Although today was only the first day, I proved to myself that I can do it even with a busy schedule.
I mean, today is Thanksgiving, my family was hosting, and the computer was locked up most of the day. But I got it done! Victory!
So, I can finally post a real update.

The Adgengar Pandemic
  • Update: 11/25/10
    Word Count: 2,205

This is really exciting for me. See, although I get all sorts of ideas for stories, I've stuck with the same one for three years (and its coming along fine). But here I am, remembering a great idea I had from a year ago, and I'm actually writing it! Yes! And because its short and I'm on a time limit, its not like its a major distraction. So, in other words, its perfect.

Ah, yes! I'm keeping up so far (yay for two days). I don't think I'm near done writing for the day, but I'm leaving pretty soon so I don't know... thought I'd post this up while I could.
Also, I finally figured out how to officially post a progress.

  • Update: 11/29/10
    Word count: 10,453

This is a new record for me- I've never been with a story quite this long (is that sad?) and there's no sign of me stopping! Most of its crap, cause I refuse to edit it until I'm done writing, but I'm thrilled anyway.

Also, I write 2,000 words every day, I just don't post every day.

I feel great for getting this done. I can tell I'm on a roll, and my self motivation is working.

However, I'm at a climax point right now, but as soon as I hit my required 2k words for the day, I stopped. Apparently I'm not excited enough to keep going, and that is a bad sign, I'm sure of it. I'll definitely get this thing done, but I can tell there's going to be a lot of editing.

  • Update: 12/4/10
    Word count: 18,299

I should be at 20,000 words now... but I didn't get anything done yesterday. Oh well- at least I was able to do some good Christmas shopping. Barbies cost so much... my budget is almost full.

I've never written so much! (On the same story, that is). I love being at twenty thousand.... only 3k away from the halfway point! I'm honestly ready for it- I'm kind of bored of this story, actually. But, I made a committment to myself, and I have to prove to myself that I can do it. Thats whats really important now.

Keep going, you can do it! It looks like you're making great progress. heart Always good to see. If you're getting bored with the novel, is there any way you can spice it up so it's more interesting to write? I know sometimes there isn't, but other times all it takes is a little more excitement and it's like you're starting a new novel all over again. If that makes sense. =P

In any case, congratulations for getting so far, so quickly!

    Thank you very much!

What actually keeps me going is music from CATS. I don't know if you've heard it much, but its amazing (Andrew Loyd Webber is a genius). I listen to different genres of music for inspiration for different stories, and I really wanted to write something I could set to CATS, which is exactly what I'm doing. So, if I ever get bored I just pull up iTunes.

I find Linkin Park works well for my fanfics (it is almost scary how well some of their songs fit Crane...oddly enough, I cannot see him as liking rock. He seems like a classical music/oldies sort of guy to me. XP), but for in-general writing, I like music from soundtracks, Linkin Park, Creature Feature (both of which tend to go nicely with my darker works), Oingo Boingo, and a few miscellaneous songs.

Oddly enough, the song/soundtrack does not always have to fit with the story, just the mood I am in when writing it. So I could be writing the happiest scene in the book, but listening to some sad song from Sweeney Todd while doing because I am in a downer mood.

I find taking a break and working on something else has helped me, but it also runs the risk of distraction. >>

I don't actually listen to musicwhile I write- I just tend to completely tune it out. But, I usually fantasize about my current work in progress whenever I'm listening to the right music- thats when most of my good ideas pop up.
I don't listen to much of Linkin Park, or anything in the genre, really. My mind automatically flips into a modern-day super-hero type fantasy, which is fun, but not what I write about. So its really just a distraction. Of course, my ipod would appear to say otherwise. Oh, the money I have wasted on music.

Distraction is not a risk for me. In fact, its hard to leave my main piece, because nothing else is quite as exciting. I feel like I've already told you this before though...

I hate absolute quiet when I work, so I need to have something in the background, and I often keep the music at a background noise level when working. Unless it is wordless music, in which case, the volume is up a bit more (the Edward Scissorhands soundtrack, I find, is perfect for this).

I have this bad habit of jumping around from idea to idea to idea when I work, so taking a break runs that risk for this reason. Unfortunately, as I told you before, when working on any story, I never simply go from beginning to end: I write the scenes that pop into my mind first so I do not forget good dialogue/phrasing that came to mind. I will literally have a separate file for these "drabbles" that I will put in order (I always have a time line set in my head so I have a general idea of where things will go), and then simply pull them out and copy and paste as they are needed...or put them somewhere else if the story has changed by then.
    PostPosted: Sat Dec 11, 2010 9:38 am

I always liked that idea- having bits and pieces done, and lining them up in order. I used to have piles of exerpts... now none of them really pertain to my story (it doesn't help that the main character has changed and the old one no longer exists).
I keep a time-line in my head too, but also have several notebooks scrawled over with notes. Of course, only about ten pages of the notes still pertain to my story. Oh dear, I have got to stop changing so much... its all the same story, I promise.

I know a few people who don't care for silence. They'll always have music playing in their house. It actually drives me a little nuts, cause when I listen to music I really listen. So, my mind gets split between hearing the music, or what my friend is saying. Usually the music wins out, and I lose a chunk of our conversation.
Whenever I go out with my friends and I'm the driver, I purposely drive the oldsmobile cause the radio doesn't work. Hahahaha!

I doubt the seriousness of most writers who have way too many ideas. They lose focus so easy, they have no actual written work. You have already proven thats not the case with you, so I don't doubt your ability in any way. That said, have fun with all your ideas.

I have a whole file full of "good stuff" that had to be cut out because it no longer worked. It exists so if I can find a place to plop it (with, if necessary, any needed changes made), I can just grab and go. It holds anything: lines, dialogue, whole chunks of story that I had to cut, etc. I love how published authors have done this too. In Harley Quinn's origin comic, "Mad Love," it begins with Commissioner Gordon going to get a check-up at the dentist...only to find himself a prisoner of the Joker. This was originally going to be used in the cartoon, but it had to be cut for time. Since it fit, it got placed into "Mad Love."

My notes tend to get complicated when I write them out. I literally have five pages on just rules of how my vampires work, and their codes and rules in their societies, complete with explanation for said rules. The werewolf rules are starting to get just as crazy.

There are times where if I do not want to listen to music, I will simply pop in a movie that I have no investment in watching and turn the volume down.

With me, it is not a matter of "too many ideas" (I often think I never have enough, and tend to get very lucky when things click into place for me), but more of a matter of "too many ideas conflicting at once," i.e., at the moment, I literally have something like four or five stories fighting for dominance in what I want to work on. The end result? They all get worked on. And progress. Very slowly. XP

You're so efficient! I almost want to start writing random excerpts so I can have a file like you. I suppose it will start to happen though, as I really start writing my main piece.
I love watching alternate beginnings of movies- they're almost always longer than the final version. I've never seen 'Mad Love', would I recognize any of the characters?

My notes aren't too complicated... but thats cause I haven't gotten into the deep and dirty details. But I'm trying to cut as much order and protocal as possible, so in the end I'll just have something simple.
How similar are your vampires to the classic version of Dracula?

Haha... as far as movies go, I can hardly pass a television without stopping for a few minutes, not matter the show. You have no idea how many times I've seen 'The Serpent Pirate Ship' and numerous versions of Veggie Tales.

And, all progress is good progress. Lately, my progress has been pretty slow, because I keep a browser with Gaia opened, and I keep switching between Word Document and the internet. I have got to stop it.

"Mad Love's" major players: Harley Quinn, the Joker, Batman, Commissioner Gordon, and Joan Leland (Arkham doctor). I have the comic; I can scan it for you if you would like. The episode might be on YouTube, but there is no guarantee.

I like watching deleted scenes from films for that reason. I also like story board-to-film-comparisons.

Compared to Dracula, my vampires are relatively close. Older vampires have more powers, so they can do things like wall-walk, go out in the day, turn into bats, etc. Most of them are relatively young, though, and only have one, maybe two powers. They do not need dirt from their home country to sleep, they -can- have sex, but it is not recommended (unless you like screwing a corpse...) and those that do are the exceptions, not the rule (and usually do it because they are bored). A lot of the weaknesses are still in check: younger vampires die in the sunlight, holy relics hurt, running water cannot be crossed, and garlic is a good way to keep them at bay. I am undecided on whether or not they have reflections.

I tend to ignore TV. Too much garbage, and not worth paying for cable (not that I could afford it anyway. YouTube is my friend).

I have actually not been on Gaia as much lately.
