Rouqie thought of subjecting the pups to A'cuil's mountain style of teaching, broken bones, missing eyes and abandoned hearts were often the result. A'cuil must have been very strong to have lived so long without injury.

"Very well. We should begin to prepare for the night." She said, casting a glance at the darkening sky, "we should find something to eat tonight so the newcomers don't starve by morning." There was now a new group forming in the woods outside the clearing, and she projected her voice to include them.

"Shall we?" She barked and gestured for the others to follow, wondering if Departed would join them, and lopped off into the forest. Immediately she found the scent of a young stag, meaning it could not escape.

xxxxxIcarus saw A'cuil's acceptance of his apology in the corner of his eye. In relief he released a quiet yip, relieved that the burly wolf wouldn't hold anything against him. He shuddered as he imagined the training and could only hope that what he would face to learn wouldn't prove to be so painful. He then turned his head to watch Rouqie as she spoke, he stepped in her direction but hesitated for a moment. He looked back at Departed, still wanting to somehow connect with him. Instead, he shook his head. It appeared that he wanted to be alone; not involved. After a few seconds of thinking his choice over once more, he decided to follow after Rouqie. Icarus could only hope that he had some innate hunting ability. He watched in awe as Rouqie caught the scent of an animal so quickly. It was clear on her face that some prey had been detected as her expression changed from one of looking, to one of hunting. Shivers crawled down his spine as he imagined the ordeal ahead of him. He inhaled deeply and continued chasing after Rouqie.

Rouqie slowed her pace so the pup could keep up with her. She felt a strange connection to him, since she had lost her mother early on too. "Now, young one." She said tenderly. "While the way to hunt in the mountains is one of ferocity, since there is nowhere to hide, the Haven ways are of subtlety. The forest itself is our ally, for the elk are always alert. We must melt into the trees, become one with the bramble and the moss. Even with your coloring, it can be done, if you believe you are capable of it."

Rouqie was all business when she hunted, the stag was near and she hoped to set a good example for the youth.

xxxxxIcarus listened intently on the lavender wolf's voice. It's soothing tone reminded him of his mother, giving him a warm sensation. He worked hard to prevent a smile from emerging on his lips. The gentleness of her voice made him listen well. After hearing her words he slowly crept under the underbrush, making it seem as though he were merely flowers beneath the foliage. He continued padding, creeping slowly and quietly, focused on the mission. Icarus stopped suddenly and froze. He had nearly stepped on a branch. He flattened his ears and tightened his focus; he refused to scare away game once more. Fully in his hunter mode, he glanced back up towards Rouqie, waiting for more instruction.

From his low crouch, Icarus could have been a patch of sunlight, his wriggling tail the tuft of an exotic flower. She smiled and panted slightly in the warmth he radiated. She was glad to be away from Departed, his coldness seemed like a distant bad memory now.

"Good. Good." She encouraged quietly. "Now smell deeply, try to remember the smell of the deer, the feel of it's blood on your maw, it's oily pelt." They were approaching the stag now, she could feel it perhaps a mile ahead, plenty of time to give instruction.

xxxxxHis excitment caused the air around him to warm. Icarus inhaled deeply to both register the scent and to focus his mind. Realizing that his warmth was growing as he tightened his focus, he attempted to retract the heat. Although he lost some of his focus, Icarus was no longer excreting warm from his fur. Once more, he took a deep breath. The scent of the deer wafted from the air and into his nose. The distinctive smell cause his nostrils to tingle, making his snout twitch. His instincts roared as the prey became the forefront thought in his mind. Flashes of the deer that had been felled earlier by the other wolves entered his mind. He imagined the beast fallen and dying - that would be his goal. He closed his eyes and continued breathing deeply, allowing the scent to become a permenant memory in his mental register of game. He opened his pale blue eyes once he was finished and smiled wolfishly, "Smell good."

Rouqie smiled back at him, proud of his natural ability, though she could not say why.

She was about to say something more when, a few yards ahead, a branch cracked. Both wolves hit the ground, ears forward, breathing steady. Rouqie noticed the pup had stopped giving off heat. Could he already be learning how to control his ability? Fascinating.

Up ahead, Rouqie spotted a pair of massive antlers bobbing up and down above the thick forest undergrowth. This part of the forest had been bulldozed by humans long ago, so the oaks and other large trees had not grown as large or as high as in other parts of the forest, letting more light through to the ground causing the bushes to grow ravenously. This made it both easier and harder to hunt. Easier, because the stag wouldn't see them coming, but harder because they couldn't see it either.

User Image Since his paws were already gathered beneath him, A'cuil rose smoothly from the ground at Rouqie's suggestion. He watched them leave with a wary eye, having seen the female hunt and knowing her infallible for a Haven wolf. Hunting was something that came far easier to him than caring about politics and newcomers; even so, he could feel the strangers around them solidifying in a way he recognized. It was raw, undisciplined and unkept, but it was there nevertheless.

Not that it mattered, really. The Darkness - and the secret desire to save his true pack - reached out for him through the thickest of trees.

A'cuil moved to take a different route through the forest, running parallel to Rouqie and Icarus. He only turned back upon seeing the brown pup at the corner of his eye, and it was her impudent words that gained her his full attention. He smiled at her, a full showing of thick fangs.

"Well, look at the little warrior. You can hunt with me, for a start." The smile was hard, and his eyes gleamed like rubies. "We'll see if you have mettle enough to learn.

"Give the others a moment. See if anyone wants to come with us, yeah?"

xxxxxIcarus still had not realized that his external warmth was an oddity. The first month of his life that he had contact with others left him no information since he had developped it in the two months in solitary. He jumped, at first, at the sight of the antlers. They appeared to be a pair of moving sticks to him. This was the first time he had ever seen such a beast alive and moving; they had always been dead before. As they approached it, he crouched closer, starting to lose sight of the stag in the thick brush. He twitched his ears around and continously sniffed to ensure that the animal was still there. He was determined not to lose this game and peered at the patches of light brown rump through the bushes. Casting a side glance at Rouqie, he wondered what was next. He knew he would be unable to take the game down himself.

Almost inaudibly, Rouqie continued her lecture. "Now, stealth is important, but the greatest asset we have is each other. I need you to make your way around to the back of it, and scare it towards me, okay? If it should charge, I need you to hold your ground and be brave, I will save you.' She licked him on the brow for emphasis. He smelled like blood and honey, a fitting scent, she thought.

She gestured for him to take a path to the left, through a thick bush cushioned with soft leaves. Hopefully they would muffle any sounds he would make.

xxxxxIcarus's gaze was held tight to attention on Rouqie as she explained. He nodded his head, attempting to commit each instruction to memory. He set his mouth into a grim, determined expression and played what he imagined the following to be in his mind. Eyes closing as he was licked, a light warmth flared out before it was bottled up once more. In turn, he padded quietly towards the thicket that he was directed to. He was cautious. Each paw planted carefully on the ground, but he remained efficient. If he was too slow, the game may wander off. Slowly, but surely he made his way around the stag, praying that he wouldn't do anything to set it off. His eyes remained trained on the deer, but he realized it was slowly starting to wander off. Not entirely sure of his position, he figured he was at least close to behind the stag. To set it off, he leaped out of the ticket and attempted a howl a final time. This time, the howl succeeded, although quiet, it was clear and left Icarus satisfied as the high pitched howl echoed around him.

Kora watched as the great cream-brown wolf got up to leave. She was wondering if she should follow or if this was his way of saying 'no' when suddenly he turned back and smiled, fully showing large, sharp fangs. The sight made her want to shrink away, but she resisted the urge. It wouldn't do to show him weakness, especially since she wanted him to teach her to fight.

Not quite understanding everything A'cuil was saying but getting the basic meaning, Kora met those hard eyes and nodded. Once again, she had to force herself not to shrink away

Rouqie was shocked at first by the high-pitched howl. It's sweet tone reverberated off the boughs and trunks. As surprised as Rouqie was, the stag was surprised tenfold!

It reared up, balking in alarm, snaring its massive antlers in the low canopy. The whites of its eyes shone in the dappled like. Wityh a great crash it wrenched it's head free and tore the branch to the ground. Infuriated, it hopped a few steps back for the orange pup, to gain space as it prepared to charge!

"No!" Rouqie cried as she launched towards it, her claws tearing through the loose dirt and foliage, scarping furrows in roots and sending up a spray of soil and pebbles.

xxxxxThe smirk that the successful howl had given him quickly faded as he realized there was danger. His body begged him to run, but the stag towered over him. Its menacing stance and antlers struck fear into him, paralyzing him completly. He whimpered lightly, his mind blanked. He didn't know what to do. His lack of experience in hunting left him confused and unsure in this situation. In turn, he began to warm the area around him instinctively. He could not control the glow. With his eyes screwed tight he curled up into the smallest ball he could manage and whined quietly, "Momma..." as he waited for the beast to charge.

Rouqie barreled into the side of the elk, she'd never felt rage like this. The basest instinct to protect. The feeling tore from her gut and vibrated through her maw, with the snarl of a demon she clamped her jaws around the elk's shoulder, tearing at it tooth and nail.

She'd surprised it and knocked it off course, Icarus was safe for the moment. It reared up again and swung it's head back, trying to scrape her off with its antlers.
