Nadja listened, her eyes narrowing by degrees as Jen went on. By the time she finished the elite was motionless, the curve of her mouth stretched thin and angled to nothing, her gaze dark and hard. It was a brittle, careful stance made all the more noticeable by the slight sway of her earrings.
Dead silence spun out into the room.

Silence from a higher-up was never a good thing.
Standing up from her seat, Jen took off her hat and bowed at the waist with her eyes staring at the carpet beneath her boots.
"Again, Ma'am, I apologize that I was unable to bring back to sample to HQ. My friend has already been troubled enough by this. If there is a punishment for failing this mission I would gladly recieve in full."
And these words were the truth. Better her get the bad end of things than Nyx.

Nyx went rigid. Silence was more frightening than yelling. Then Jen offered herself as a sacrifice. "Jen, don't!" She hissed at her friend. "You aren't at fault here!" Her voice wasn't very loud, almost like she was trying to talk to Jen without drawing attention to herself.

"Sit back down."
As if she were tired of looking at them all of a sudden, Nadja closed her eyes. Her shoulders rose slightly in an inhalation and carefully, very carefully, she had a seat.
The Arcanine shoved its head under her arm; the elite didn't look down, but her fingers buried themselves in the thick mane.
"Do you have any idea of the magnitude of what's been lost?" Her voice was quiet and deliberate.

Nyx nodded once and kept her gaze down.
"Yes ma'am..." She wanted to respond before Jen tried more hero-stuff.

Jen straighten and re-took her seat.
"I do as well, ma'am."
She wasnt trying to seem heroic before. Jen was just trying to spare her friend a dark blow from the higher-ups.

The quick responses brought Nadja's gaze upon the grunts again. "I wonder if you do." It was a murmur, low and dangerous.
"Legendary Pokemon are beings of immense power. They can stop time, shift continents, defy death." The elite's voice was as measured and tightly controlled as a tightwalker's steps over a lava field. "Almost any person you meet will live and die without ever catching sight, sound or sign of one. In any age enough material for a DNA sample - the hair of a Mew, the feather of a Ho-oh - would be enshrined." As she spoke the corners of her mouth pulled back in increasing displeasure, but her voice didn't rise - only increased in intensity, as did the look aimed at the grunts.
"To call legendary DNA a valuable sample is an understatement on the level of saying I am merely angry. At some point some field agent risked life and limb to acquire something precious, do you understand? Now that hard work and serendipity and potential is lost - through mishandling, inattention and chertov clerical error." The word was spoken with extreme distaste, nearly spat. "And you are part of this."
Moloch laid his ears back and focused on Nyx and Jen, the sources of his master's displeasure. A low rumble rose in his throat.

Nyx was frozen. There was nothing to say. She was probably going to die. Words would only make it a more painful death.

Jen reached out and placed a hand on Nyx's shoulder; quickly giving it a comforting squeeze, she turned her attention back to the elite and Arcanine infront of them. Even under that scalding lecture, Jen still held her head high and stood at attention.
Never back down, never show weakness. Thats what her parents always said whenever they worked with more dangerous pokemon back at home and the same saying applied here.
Yet...Jen bit her lip while pondering something that lingered on her tounge. Yet common sense kept yelling at her from the back of her mind not to open her mouth. It was likely only to make things worse.

Nadja watched the both of them. The bubble of silence that began to expand was suddenly popped when she made a noise of annoyance and looked away with a sharp movement that made her earrings swing.
"Stand by for summons. Dismissed."

And with that, Nyx stood, saluted, and exited the room fairly quickly.
Outside, in the hall, Nyx pressed her back up against the wall and sighed. She waited for Jen to exit so they could walk together.
"So..."

"As you say, Ma'am."
With her bow and salute, Jen followed Nyx out the office door. Once there, she grabbed her friend by the wrist and began pulling her towards the mess hall.
"At times like this, sugar is the best cure!"

" We shall enjoy our final sugars." Best to make their last moments some happy ones. She gladly was led by her friend to the mess hall.
"What are you thinking? In terms of sugar content?"

Jen dragged them into the elevator and mashed down on the button leading them to the mess level. As it went down, she leaned against the wall and pondered.
"Hm...Well, I could always make something." She cast a glance at her friend. "But stop saying stuff like that. Didnt I say I would take the rap for this? You've already gotten yelled at enough today."
A wide grin. "And before you say anything, here's my answer." The elevator door opened. "Its what friends do right? Dont we back each other up?"
