There is also something else everyone should know. There are different types of verbs, such as -u, -ru, & irregular. Before I go into that, there is a stem change verb chart that you can easily follow below.
......................Present................Past...
Positive..........-masu.............-mashita
Negative........-masen..........-masendeshita
An example of a -u verb is, nomu, which means drink. In order to stem change these verbs correctly, you simply take off the -u & add -i. So the present positive verb for nomu will be ''nomimasu.'' For present negative, "nomimasen." Past positive, "nomimashita.'' Past negative, "nomimasendeshita."
A -ru verb is taberu, eat. Simply take off the -ru and add the stem changing verb. Tabemasu, tabemashita, tabemasen, tabemasendeshita.
There are two irregular verbs. They are suru, do, & kuru, have. When changing these verbs, suru becomes shi- + the stem change verb, & kuru becomes ki- + the stem change verb. Suru becomes shimasu, shimashita, shimasen, shimasendeshita. Kuru becomes kimasu, kimashita, kimasen, kimasendeshita.

- I don't want to eat chocolate cake
Watashi wa inu wo arukimasen
- I don't want to walk the dog
Past:
Watashi wa chokorētokēki wo tabemashita
- I ate chocolate cake
Watashi wa inu wo arukimashita
- I walked the dog
Negative Past:
Watashi wa chokorētokēki wo tabemasen deshita
- I did not eat a chocolate cake
Watashi wa inu wo arukimasen deshita
- I did not walk the dog
Want to do something:
Watashi wa chokorētokēki wo tabetai desu
- I want to eat chocolate cake
Watashi wa inu wo arukitai desu
- I want to walk the dog
