Sanzo was engrossed in finishing his pack of cigarettes, the fresh air and the cancerous air a good contrast to the atmosphere just inside the labs. His migrane was easing up as he entertained thoughts of setting Nibantai's report on fire, a smirk tugging up the corner of his lips in what would have appeared to anyone else as a feral growl. Feeling someone approaching, his eyebrows drew together in their regular scowl, looking at the third seat in annoyance. "If that's paperwork for me to read, you can forget it. I've reached my quota of letting people live for today.."

Yaro cringed. Sanzo was indeed grouchy today, and he dared not risking angering the man, lest he end the day with one of Sanzo's slugs in between his eyes." Ummm, no...Sanzo-taichou sir...it's just the reactivation form for Kira Izuru to return to active duty...sir..you won't have to read it at all, it just requires your name on it to be official and acceptable to the central 46." Yaro managed to stammer out. Sanzo was particularly frightening to the third seat, just because his whole presence was enough to make one feel like a single slip up was going to be fatal. Yaro remained silent, ready to run should the soutaichou show any sign of hostility.

Shortly after Yaro had departed from his taichou's side, there was a knock on the door. Which was probably there only as a pretense of respect, for no sooner had the knock sounded than the door opened , and a woman with a wrapped ponytail strode in, stretching as she strolled into the Sanbantai office.
"Ahhh~ Good workout~" the woman sighed, sounding very, very pleased.
As she spoke, she plunked down in one of the couches that adorned the office. Suzuran was pretty sure that this same couch was in all of the bantai offices . . . but heck, who was she to care? Leaning her head back, the grin on her face stretched devilishly as she saw the expression on the face of the only person she could call a good friend.
"What's wit' th' look, Mikoto? Y'look like ye gotta free ticket outta paperwork . . . tho I c'n tell it ain't paperwork. What's got ya in such a good mood today?"
Technically, she should have been down in the Juunibantai laboratories, where she would be accompanying her taichou in figuring out what the whole dang thing was about. But seeing as she just about loathed that bantai . . . she'd excused herself before they'd gone twenty paces of it and slipped off to see Mikoto instead. Besides, Mikoto was obliged to be down there as a taichou. The fact that she was here meant that she'd been down that rathole and back. Which meant she knew what was going on.

"Ara~! Suzu-chan," Mikoto smiled brightly at the younger woman. "If you must know why I haven't fallen asleep while doing this... tediousness... is because after many many years, I now have a fukutaichou. And, as always, when you're around things aren't as bad."
The redhead tried to contain her excitement, but it slipped out anyway. She was happy that she'd now have a fukutaichou, not that Yaro wasn't a good assistant because the gods knew that if it weren't for him, she'd have even more work to do. Not only that, but she'd have someone else to keep her company during the day since Suzuran wasn't in her squad and could not be around all the time.
"I take it you've been to your most loathed bantai?" the older woman asked as she stood and rounded her desk to join the other.

A loud scoff answered the Sanbantai taichou, and Suzuran waved an arm as if to brush away the thought of Juunibantai as quickly as possible. Her annoyance at the mere thought of the place was loud and proud on her features.
"Pshaw!! As if!" she retorted, and rather loudly at that. "Damn'd place gives me th' friggin' creeps. Seriously, who likes sittin' beside those tubes 'n' wires 'n' weirdarse experiments all day? I'm a warrior, a seat'd off'sir 'n' a fukutaichou stand-in, not some freakin' guide fer th' blind. 'Sides, not that Kotsuke-taichou needs one t' b'gin wit'. 'E c'n take care o'imself. "
Nonetheless, a warmer smile touched her lips as she heard the good news. Suzuran knew how much Mikoto hated paperwork. She was the same, but she plowed through it diligently because she knew that at one point, many centuries ago, her father had sat in that exact same spot, doing just that: paperwork. And that was enough to make the job a little more bearable. Yaro had been a good worker and helped alleviate some of the redhead's load, but now that there would be a fukutaichou there, she knew the work would be much better for her.
"A new fukutaichou, huh?" she mused, her hand instinctively going for the extra long lock of hair on the side of her head. "What's th' pers'n like? 'Zitta-"
A thought just struck her. Like a sack of bricks. Mikoto had been down to the Juunibantai. The bantai had been conducting experiments. On the frozen Winter War survivors. And miraculously, right after her visit, Mikoto has a fukutaichou . . . No way. Suzuran shot up, looking very, very serious as she stared at the taichou.
"Yer new fuku . . . it couldna' be . . . Izuru Kira, one'a th' Winter War Shinigami . . . !?"

"Mmm, bin-bon!" the Sanbantai taichou said with a light laugh tapping the tip of her own nose. "What luck that the first one to be reanimated would be the one to stand at my side as fukutaichou."
Mikoto took the space next to Suzuran and began to mess around with her long, black locks. Having the younger woman around was much like having a little sister, which the redhead enjoyed thoroughly. Braiding bits of her hair, the older woman kept her smile in place.
"So, what have you been doing all day Suzu-chan? You usually come see me in the mornings, but there was no sign of you anywhere~"

"That's good. Just try to keep their screams muffled. We don't need anyone poking around where they shouldn't." Ryusei opened his mouth to say more to Ritsuka when he was suddenly poked out of the blue. Having a hard time believing someone had the nerve to touch, let alone poke at him.
"What is it now, Sanz....o..." Seeing that it was Mikoto sure did surprise him. "Ah, Mikoto-san. Trust me, if I were giving him a hard time he wouldn't still be here. Besides, I am only following protocols. You know my policy. Guilty until proven innocent."
The Taichou smirked as he reached out and lightly flicked her on the nose like one would do to a small dog. "We are only going to watch your new pet until it is deemed safe. Besides, after having a little discussion with the whelp from tenth I've decided to lighten up on Kira."
He paused for a moment after her comment about the dirt still encrusted on his body. He never did notice how dirty he was until someone mentioned it. Ryusei glanced back towards Ritsuka and yelled out to him. "Hey, freak, I need to borrow your shower. Mikoto says I am too dirty."

Violet eyes rolled in irritation at the third seat. Goddammit, can't anyone do a thing for themselves? "Keh. You'd think that someone could wipe their a** around here without my say-so.." Regardless of his words, the blonde Soutaichou snatched the papers out of Yaro's hands, skimming over the words before scrawling his name on the document with a flourish. Instead of giving the papers back and being done with the whole situation, Sanzo stood from his leaning position against the wall of the laboratory and made his way out of Juunibantai to pay Mikoto a little visit. Not bothering to knock, Sanzo opened the door roughly, same irritated look never leaving his face. "Oi, what is this- a slumber party? Don't you have paperwork to finish?" Normally, he wasn't one to care when or how the paperwork got done, but because Ryusei had put him in a foul mood, he felt the need to return the favor.
Ritsuka waved off his long-time friend in dismissal, "Yeah, yeah, okay. It's not as fun when they don't react, though." He gave the Nibantai a playful pout, though he didn't see it as they were both poked and the pink-haired scientist made a noise similar to a whining child, batting at the offending finger. "It's not nice to assault a taichou, no da!" At her comment about his best friend being covered in too much dirt, he wrinkled his nose at the offending mess Ryusei was covered in. "Well, swine, you know where my shower is. You're not unfamiliar with my quarters after all this time, are you~?"

"Geh! Sanzo-soutaichou," Mikoto squeaked as she assumed a comical pose from the shock. "Etto... I-I was just... umm..."
She trailed off, not being able to come up with a good enough excuse as to why she was lallygagging with the Kyuubantai third seat. However, she was frozen in place and couldn't move. Not only was she shocked that the soutaichou himself had actually come there, but he seemed to be in the foulest of moods.
Don't tell me Yaro-kun got to him late, she whined silently. Why me of all people right now? Suzu-chan, say something... please?
The redhead knew that there wasn't much the other woman could say to the irate blonde. So here they were, trapped by his awfully powerful grumpy mood.
Must... do... paperwork. Can't move... mood of doom... smothering me...

Yaro looked surprised when Sanzo had not handed him back the paper work, and when he left with it, yaro took it as a bad sign. With Sanzo-taichou still holding the papers, yaro had no choice but to follow the grumpy man, though he wished he did not have to, feeling slightly like an unwanted dog following behind its master for a treat. Yaro was even more surprised when Sanzo burst into the office of his own captain. There was no way this could be good. remaining silent, Yaro stood in the door way, looking embarrased, and quite apologetic. " Im sorry, Mikoto-taichou." He mouthed to his captain.

Despite her initial sense of stomach-through-the-floor, Suzuran had to relax under the repetitive strokes of Mikoto's hands through her ebony hair. The older woman had once remarked at how much like a younger sister she felt like to her, and though at first unused to the hair-braiding and the general intimate feel of friendship in general, the hotheaded sanseki of Kyuubantai had eventually found it . . . oddly soothing. She was an only child, her mother being both loyal to her father despite the fact that he would most probably never be able to wed her and her handicap (and daughter) being a deterrent for other men, so she'd never known how it felt to have a sibling, let alone a sister. A small part of her felt that, if this was how it felt, then it was a good thing.
Still twirling the lock of hair between her fingers, Suzuran waved an almost lazy hand in the air as she answered Mikoto's question.
"I got bogg'd down wit' paperwork," she huffed. "Damn lotta crud rec'ntly. Prol'ly 'cuz'v th' shards everywhere . . ."
Her brow knitted together as she thought of the Sanbantai fukutaichou. Contrary to her usual personality, Suzuran had done extensive research on the Winter War Shinigami, particularly ones that worked directly with her father, Shuuhei. Izuru Kira was among the many. He was a kohai, and had actually been led by her father in an Academy training session in the real world. He, Abarai Renji, and Hinamori Momo had disobeyed his order to leave to protect their sempai. Though his later records had been more shady, being an aide to Ichimaru Gin, he seemed to be portrayed as . . . a very lackadaisical man. Though this wasn't even close to worthy in Suzuran's eyes, she had decided his saving point was that he was at least a friend to Shuuhei.
Suzuran was very abruptly snapped out of her thoughts when she heard the door burst open and the soutaichou's irate voice. She was up in seconds, though upon hearing his words, the third seat matched his glare with her own. She respected Sanzo. He was a good leader, and an immensely powerful man. He had authority over her. But that was all he really amounted to. She only had respect for his orders, but to her, his frequent attitude towards his subordinates pissed her off. According to her, neither she nor Mikoto had done anything to annoy him, so she didn't see a reason why they were on the receiving end of the stick.
"Oi, Sanzo. What's got yer pan'ies inna knot?" she asked. It wasn't a harsh tone, but it wasn't kindly either. "Yer th' freakin' Soutaichou. Don't nag at us jus' 'cuz ye woke up on th' wrong side o' th' futon. We ain't done nothin' t'git on yer bad side, so go b*tch at th' friggin' idjit who piss'd ye in th' firs' place." Somehow, she had a pretty good hunch who it was. "An' jus' fer th' rec'rd, mah paperwork's done 'n' done since this mornin'. If ye got th' papers fer Mikoto's fuku done, then jus' leave it here 'n' go smoke yer crapsticks somewhere. Yer doom cloud ain't gonna help Mikoto none."

Sanzo parried the young girl's glare, keeping a level eye on her. He kept staring at her irritated until he pulled back with a smirk. "You've got balls, kid. I like that. Damn good quality that none of these p***y-whipped taichous have. What position are you again?" Mannerisms changing on the drop of a hat, the blonde soutaichou visibly relaxed, anger ebbing away and being replaced with amusement. No one stood up to him, other than the Nibantai-taichou, and it frustrated him. Yes, he was the Soutaichou, but that didn't mean he had the first and last say like some dictator.
He knew he portrayed himself as an a*****e and had no mind in changing their opinion, but he did it because sugar-coating a situation didn't solve anything. Sweeping fully into the room, he seated himself on the edge of one of the plush couches, running a hand through his hair. "Look, I know you're excited about that guy being your fukutaichou, but you've got to understand how..uneasy this whole damn thing is. It's like raising someone from the dead. And what if he really is with that Aizen b*****d despite what his files say? He was with Ichimaru for years and was investigated after the defection."
Rubbing his temples, he paused for a minute to gather his thoughts, letting out a sigh he didn't realize he had been holding. "I'll give him a chance, but if he shows one sign of not being fully with us, he's getting a bullet between the eyes." Roughly put, but the violet-eyed man felt that it got his point across in the right way. He looked out the window at the stormy skies, praying that he was making the right choice by letting Kira back into a seat of power so easily. "If he gains Nakahara-taichou's trust, then that's good enough for me and I'll get off his back. But until then, he'd better be treading in shallow water."
Watching the two taichou's squabble back and forth, Kira found himself becoming stir crazy despite his earlier lethargy. Scooting to the side of the cot he'd been sitting on, he stood to see if he could fully support his weight after centuries of unuse. He had a small blessing there as the fukutaichou carefully made to sneak out of Juunibantai. watching Ritsuka and Ryuusei, he waited until they moved away from the door before making his escape. Once outside, he quietly shut the door and made way to Sanbantai, making sure that his memory was indeed right.

Getting over the shock of the man in charge suddenly barging into her office, Mikoto was now able to speak freely without tripping over her words. Giving a nod to her third seat, she transmitted mentally that he was not a fault for Sanzo's sudden appearance. At the blonde's mention of the taichou being 'p***y-whipped' she quirked a brow at him. If the man wasn't pissy at every turn of the day, then no one would act the way they did when he's around. However, she didn't let it bother her too much for the simple fact that she avoided contact with him all together unless it was for an issue that was of dire concern. Then issues about Kira Izuru surfaced once more.
"Soutaichou, no disrespect," she began standing and returning to her desk and plopping in the chair, figuring that while she has company she may be able to get more papers done. "But you and Nakahara-taichou rarely trust anyone. And with Ryusei's position, it's his job to be suspicious of everyone... even when he first met me."
The redhead's cheeks flushed as she remembered the times when she was first appointed taichou and Nakahara, her sempai, was very suspicious of her. The constant surveillance even when she went to visit the public baths. Getting herself together quickly, she continued.
"However, even if he was that man's fukutaichou, there's no concrete evidence that he was with them. He was investigated, but he wasn't found to be guilty. Give Kira Izuru the benefit of the doubt, ne~? It's already bad that he was given a bad impression of the current Gotei back in the labs. Let the guy rest easy a bit."
Setting down the pen she was just using to sign her name away on the documents stacked before her, she sighed as she looked out of the window.
"Besides... my intuition tells me that the guy is innocent," she said with a distant look before tilting her head so that her violet eyes looked into the similar pair of the soutaichou. "Have you ever known my intuition to be incorrect, Sanzo-soutaichou?"

Suzuran had been prepared for some boring lecture about how she should speak respectfully to her superiors and elders, blah blah blah, everything she'd heard before. Instead, she found the soutaichou's anger deflating, and grinned when she was asked of her position.
"Kyuubantai Sanseki, Sanzo-soutaichou." Now she'd give him the title he deserved.
And shut up to listen to what he and Mikoto were talking about. Yes, that suspicion had come up in her research too. Though from what the accounts wrote, it sounded like he was doing it simply out of loyalty, as a fukutaichou obeying the orders of his taichou. Apparently, he'd gone into something like shock when the then Yonbantai taichou Unohana Retsu had announced what she had witnessed. But throughout the Winter War, he'd pulled his share of the load . . .
"Usu, Mikoto's gotta point there," Suzuran put in, combing her fingers through her hair to undo the braid. However much it was fun for the redhead taichou to play with her hair, the Sanseki preferred her own style much better. As she rewound the cloth around her ponytail, she continued, "Nakahara's all'ays beena tightass. Stupid bugger would'na 'lieve I was Hisagi's kiddo. Still doesn't, but I could'na care less now." Cinching the knot tight, she tossed her rope of hair over her shoulder and leaned back on the sofa again. "Kira's inn'cent 'nough. 'Is recerds aft'wards's clean. 'Sides, I gotta go wit' Mikoto's guts, 'specially since mine're sayin' th'xact same thing. And 'ey," she added, cracking an eye open and grinning wickedly. "If'n anythin', I'm all'ays willin' t'kick 'is arse back inta line."

Yaro was relieved that Mikoto-taichou was not upset with the result of his visit to see Sanzo-taichou, considering how it had not seemed to go well for the third seat. but he wanted the paperwork back, and Sanzo was still clutching the desired file. Yaro was going to have to ask for it back, which might go wrong, considering the soutaichou's unpredictable temper.
"Um, Sanzo-taichou...If I may, could I please have those papers back? They need to be sent to the Central 46, so that Kira Izuru's re-activation is officially recognized." the young man asked politely after Suzuran had finished speaking, politely waiting his turn.
