I guess it's a new project - fresh ideas usually is something people can get enthusiatic about. biggrin

Yeah. It's also a difference in attitude; most of the new editorial staff are doing it as a springboard to a career, not as part of mellowing into retirement and memoirs.

Oh my God! I've just spent 2 hours critiquing a piece! How the hell did that happen? It's 11.20pm and I'm so tired!
re: spring boarding - I suppose in that sense people really are more likely to put more into it if they believe it can set them up for the future.

Oh, wow. Will the person at least appreciate the work you did critiquing?

I don't know... They've not posted back yet (as most don't seem to) it was for a piece in orginal thoughts forum. I think I may come across as being harsh sometimes but I'm actually just trying to be thorough. :S

Yeah, that's one reason I've been a bit slow on the critique, and only given general stuff; my usual style of critique doubles the length of the piece with my comments.

They're the kind of critiques I'm aiming for biggrin I try to give as much feedback as I can. Kind of frustrating when people don't returrn to see it, or just don't acknowledge it sad

I was really, really happy earlier when a friend of mine critiqued on of my pieces - she gave me really good feedback paragraph by paragraph, and we could talk about the way I mangle syntax and need to stop it.

Yeah! I love mine, even though my critique group part won't begin meeting until this Sunday.
Any chance you'd be able to cobble together your own group?

I suppose I could but I'm not as certain about what I can do... I really wanted someone around with more experience that me. It would be sods law that I end up in a group with people who are leaning on me to help them progress but can't offer the critiques I need. :S

The cold hard fact is that a lot of the people you end up with, whether you start the group or join another one, is that most people are not going to have the same drive you do. You've actively been doing research; a lot of people don't. There's a woman in my mom's Creative Non-Fiction critique group who doesn't even have a computer to send out her story by email a week ahead of time for everyone to critique. She, like a lot of people, isn't as interested in improvement for publication as in having a witness to her story.

I suppose if I learn what I can about these groups, when I move I can always set up my own. biggrin
That sucks that some people don't even care enough to meet the expected lowest level of involvement. This group's a "writing for pleasure" group but the brief summary said about activities to improve writing, group discussions etc. I should get a message for the group organiser tomorrow with more information.

It's at least tomorrow to you now. Anything on the group?
Tonight I get to go to a meeting of the Canadian Authors' Association to find out more about the CanWrite 2010 conference. Hopefully I can volunteer so I can get in free and hobnob.

Yes, I had a message when I got back home from work. The next gathering is 3 June and there's a guest speaker talking about writing for contests. She didn't say if I need to take anything with me though.
What does hobnob mean for you? It's a type of yummy biscuit over here. lol.
