The bottom few could be worked on. Then there's also sex education, which isn't so hot right now.

True they could be worked on indeed.

Our Sex Ed is getting much better now. Believe me, having taught it myself I have checked the syllabus thouroughly, but I definatley think there is room for improvement, particularly in teaching how each method should actually be used, as most of the percentages are only if used correctly.

Unfortunatley there's only so much you are allowed to say as irritating parents and government officials don't like us exposing their offspring to such things. Personally I'd rather my kid (shock horror) learnt what contraception was, and how to use it in class, with a trained health care officer, and in a non judgemental environment than not know and be exposed to STI's or an unwanted pregnancy... hmm
Well, you're talking about England's Sex Ed, I'm guessing. But most of us live in the US or Canada. sweatdrop

Anyways, I think that parents should take over responsibility for a lot of sex ed; I would say all of sex ed, but, considering the fact that you can't expect everyone to be a good parent and teach their kids what they are supposed to, we've kinda gotta have sex ed.

But I don't think that the schools should be responsible for all of the sexual education, partially because a parent might have religious beliefs that the school wouldn't teach, or would teach against in sex ed.

It is England's sex ed yeah ...sorry guys I can't talk for the U.S or Canada..

Thats a good point. I would say the best option would be for schools to offer good thourough sex ed, but that parents be allowed to "opt out" their child from lessons for religious reasons. I would not however, say that those children should be allowed to opt out of an at least modified for of the class quiz. If for no other reason than to make sure that they don't believe any stupid myths.

I completley agree that it would be a good idea for parents to take responsibilty for a childs sex ed, although many do seem uncomfortable broaching the subject. Also I agree that some parents cannot be relied upon to teach their child somthing so important.

Perhaps a sex - ed class should also be taught at age 18? (Are the US and Canadians still in school then? 17 if not) to review and go into ore depth. Without the parental opt out button. At that age, the teens are old enough to make their own choice. I would say younger myself but I definatley think sex ed should be given at the very least in the year a person becomes the legal age for sex, without the parent being allowed to drag the kid out of their education. If the law says they can have sex, surely they should be taught about it?

I agree; A later term sex ed would be perfect. Though, they should definetly learn something earlier on too; Legal or not, kids are still having sex before 18. sweatdrop

What is the legal age in the US and Canada by the way? In the UK it is 16.

I must say I was most disturbed when 40 % of the 14 year old class i was teaching thought it was ok for their age group to have sex... eek

No kidding. sweatdrop I've heard scary stories about kids that age; I've heard that there's some sort of a**l-sex craze going through the middleschool and highschool crowds, in order to prevent pregnancy. eek gonk

Looking it up on Wikipedia:

In Canada it is 14, with exceptions for things like work with pornography or prostitution, but from 12-14 they can have sex with someone within two years of their age, and anyone under 11 can have sex with anyone else under 11 because children under 11 cannot be charged with a crime. eek a**l sex is illegal for anyone not married and under 18, except in Ontario and Quebec.

In the US, it is generally 16, but within 4 years is allowed at any age. It also varies with the state, up to 18 years.

There's also all sorts of strange exceptions varying by state. sweatdrop Like, in New Mexico the age of consent is 13 if the partner is four years or less older, otherwise it's 18.

whoah sweatdrop

*feels so old fashioned*

I thought our 16 was young! I'l admit I didnt think of myself as being a kid at the time, but looking back....Kid.

I still don't feel like i'm a proper adult even though legally I am here now.

(The 14 year olds I taught were shocked to find out that my teaching partner joanna and I both personally thought that 14 year olds shouldn't be doing much beyond holding hands and making out...not that I told them my personal opinions much, bad teaching form and all, they made me feel so conservative surprised )

a**l sex craze? eek eeep.

Luckily the kids here don't seem to have caught onto that, although I had to explain to them that it still technically counted as sex, and that it wasnt really a viable alternative. As far as I know its illegal in Britain to allow someone to have a**l sex in your house.

The most worrying things I came across were that the kiddlies thought that a crisp bag was a suitable method of contraception (ouch?!)

And call my odd if you will, but I found it a little strange that not one from a class of 30 could give me a single suggestion as to why sterilisation was not the best form of contraception when you are 14...hmmm

Wow. That's kinda depressing. sad

And using a chip bag as contraception sounds like defeating the purpose of sex.

Any purpose of sex. sweatdrop

a**l sex is not illegal in any state, because of a Supreme Court ruling in the case of Lawrence v. Texas, which made it unconstitutional to make a**l sex illegal.

It might have been illegal as recently as 2003, which is when the ruling was made, but it cannot be illegal within the United States at this time.

Thank god for legal precedents.

Any kind of consensual human sex being illegal makes me question the government that would allow that kind of thing.

eek Don't they have plastic wrap there? Plastic baggies? Rubber gloves? gonk Oh, the humanity...

I suppose a**l sex is better than vaginal sex, as far as preventing pregnancy...it's a great way to spread blood-borne diseases, though... sad

I'll have toi look into that. Last time I looked (I think about a month ago) the law here was still in place.

It's called "The Bill of Rights," and I'm pretty sure we had one first. xd

And see, the thing is, obviously neither one fulfills all rights that we expect; Neither one guarranteed the rights desired by either side of the abortion debate. And I'm pretty sure a**l sex really didn't come up often back in 1776.
