Braces is just something you have to get over. WHen I started playing, I had braces, but got them off the next year. It was hard adjusting to them, just like it was hard adjusting when I went back to retainers (I wore retainers and then they broke and then like 3 years later I got them again). MOstly because I created more spit when I had retainers in so i was always draining my trumpet. You'll learn to adapt to your braces- just hang in there. One of our best trumpet players had horrible teeth and went through some serious dental work. ONe thing my BD suggested he do is place is trumpet on a table (make sure it can't move) and the blow into it without touching it. I forget why exactly, but it helps build up your embuchure and stuff.

It's something that makes sure that you're not pressure playing which with braces could hurt a bit because you're putting pressure between your lip and the mouth piece. Pressure playing is bad, but almost everybody does it. A few of my friends have compitions where they see who can get the highest note with out pressure playing, they tried to tech me to play soprano trumpet and I could only get to a high E, sad stuff it was.

But it does build embashure it's forcing your emnbashure and breathing to work not your lips.

i play saxophone and the 3 weeks after i got my braces were THE WORST. some insturments and some people aren't affected. braces just give you a chance to readjust your playing, and your playing level. smile

Alright, i have braces and so does my brother, he plays trumpet, and i play alto sax & tenor sax along with percussion. He told me that at marching band camp... with him playing. his lips started to bleed becuase of the braces, which i could feel it being painful. well with my. my lower lip killed me if i play for more then a few hours. I found that out doing all-county. My lips were in pain. But all in all, you really get used to the pain. Another thing i learned from it is, your lower or upper or even both, lips get tougher since you have braces. so whenever you get them off it might take a few days but you'd probably play a little better. smile

Oh, you rock...

User ImageI got braces about a year and a half ago, they're gone now, I just have a retainer.
They didn't affect my playing at all, unless I was playing right after I got them tightened.
Well, that hurt like hell, so I stopped that...
yup... 3nodding User Image

you really do...

I have a question for y'all. Do braces mess with your playing at all? Does it make playing certain instruments hard to play? I'm kinda worried 'cause I play the oboe, and I'm getting braces soon. sweatdrop
It takes a little getting used to, but it's not that bad.

I play oboe too~ ^^

it hurts when you first get braces, but most band directors wont make kids play when they get them.

Well I play flute and when I had my braces on I had no problem. The only time I had a bit of trouble was actually after I got my braces off. But that was me, one of my friends who also played flute said that for like a week after she got her braces on she couldn't get her flute to sound even remotely in tune (and for flutes there's normally a wide range of 'in tune' sweatdrop ).

You get use to it after a while. It'll hurt at first, but eventually you get use to the pain.

oooh i have a good story about getting braces.. i got braces on the day of our spring concert, and a week later was large-group contests, and i was in so much pain i decidedly couldn't play, but i was first chair, so my teacher was freaking out.. bad things.. ugh..

It'll be a bit of adjustment, but once you get used it you should be fine.

I play flute and had braces, I barely even noticed when I played, though when I got them off my teeth felt all wobbly and it was a tad uncomfortable for awhile, but my teeth eventually returned to normal. :3

And, I'm sure you've been warned, the braces will hurt at first. x3
