Red Aviatrix And what, exactly, would be the best shape for a flying city? Ship-shaped, that's what. Best is subjective.

Mylian And both are shaped exactly the same. Flat on one side and round on the other. wink I was under the impressive you were suggesting a round, as averse to elongated, domed city? If you're not, it's no different from the already suggested ship-shape-with-buildings-on-top idea. CATSUITS! Red Aviatrix And what, exactly, would be the best shape for a flying city? Ship-shaped, that's what. Best is subjective. For flying, I meant. Why you get stream-lined, rather than spherical, birds.

Ok. Now I'm really torn.
Domes may make for better viewing, but 'ship-shapes' would make for much better flying ~ and you can still build plenty on top of 'em, keep the dull stuff below decks.

Truth, but I think there's a bit of confusion about the shape of this aircity. Captain Amaranth suggested platforms supported by balloons or somesort, but it seems you two are talking about something different.
Ahh, CLARIFICATION WHERE ARE YOUUU tralala

Captain Amaranth suggested platforms supported by balloons or somesort, but it seems you two are talking about something different. Ahh, CLARIFICATION WHERE ARE YOUUU tralala Ack! You're right! Ok, what I'm basically suggesting is this: build a city upon (and inside) a shape reminiscent of the hull of a ship. City on top, ship underneath. What alternatives would people prefer? I know I may be discarding suggestions left, right and centre ~ but I really don't mean to. Certainly, I do give ideas consideration, and would like to happen across a 'solution' that everyone (not just myself) would like. I'm trying to find a nice 'medium' between what everyone wants. I see the above suggestion as a 'best of all worlds' ~ the airship/city serves as the 'main' part of the Anachronism, (hopefully) a nice place for both living and adventuring. But at the same time, for a really nice place to live, you can't beat somewhere on the ground ~ where you can spread buildings out as much as you like, and take full advantage of things like light and nature that may not be possible on a structure meant primarily for flying, not living. Supposing this place is an island, you can also do things like delve underground, and even underwater ~ which 'just a flying city' could never do. ~ Although methinks we're forgetting the most important question: what if pirates attacked...?

How about a hybrid?
Have a fat elliptical body, or an egg-shape, laid horizontal. Divide it down the middle with a level plane. Above the level of this plane the outer shape is the dome of the deck/city. Below the level of this plane is the hull of the airship, and larger docking bays. Around the perimeter of the deck/plane are docks for smaller craft.
Wouldn't that give the best parts of all our options?

Well then, as long as the buildings are on deck and not the cargo hold, I'm all for it. If all the buildings are belowdecks it might as well be that underground city mentioned earlier, and besides, Macross already went there. xd

You do make a very good point about the need for natural light; which is made all the more difficult by the city being in the shadow of the balloons that support it. If you like, think of the 'below decks' as the buildings above having very large basements/cellars. With windows, lots of 'em.
Yeah, that's something else I'm trying to go for, a city that hasn't been done before (if possible). See: the traction and flying cities in Mortal Engines, and Castle Wulfenbach from Girl Genius.

Beautiful Propaganda Captain Amaranth Although methinks we're forgetting the most important question: what if pirates attacked...? An Airship/City-in-an-Airship would probably be a better defense, since the pirates would need to get inside the hull first. Aye, that's my thinking. Definitely more manoeuvrable to either escape or fight back, too.

If the balloons are white then they'll re-radiate ambient light nicely, and the shadow won't be too gloomy.

Aye, it'd create a curious sort of daylight for the 'city' ~ as the sun gets higher, more of its light will be directly blocked by the balloon.

You could have shafts through the envelope lined with reflective panels to bring the natural light down.
