"Aye, it's me livin'," Rory said, nodding. "You really donnae hae t' spend anymore time wi' th' horse than you do wi' th' ones you got here. Donnae hae t' ruin your rep fae bein' at th' carnival, but you get th' advantage o' a didikai-trained horse."

Mrs. Katan chuckled softly, even if Rory hadn't meant it as a joke. "Very good. Not that I think I'll bump into too many acquaintances while I'm there."
Lee spotted a flash of the back end of a puppy as it bounded past the house and headed for the back yard. Panicked, Lee chased after it, wishing she'd worn better shoes for running as she attempted to catch up to the little guy before he came into view for Rory. She had no idea where her future husband was at this point, and figured he could be trotting around right in plain sight. Luckily for her, the young dog wasn't exactly at an age where it could use it's legs for speed, and she caught it wobbling over to the stables before it was able to wander into the barn. Scooping him up and holding him like a stuffed animal, she scolded the pup softly. "You can't let Rory see you yet, silly guy." She planned to put a bow on him, maybe even give him a nice bath before letting Rory see. What she didn't realize, however, was that Rory and her mother were right inside the barn, close enough to hear her speak, though possibly not hear what exactly she was saying.

Actually, Rory hadn't been joking. He knew the woman valued her reputation. He smiled at Mrs. Katan, nodding. "Nae, prolly not, but why chance it, eh?"
He lifted his head a bit, hearing Lee's voice and grinned. "Ah, there's me girl." Walking out the the entrance, he spotted her with a bundle of fur in her arms. "Whatcha got there, lover?" Was that a puppy? She'd bought a puppy? "Lee?"

Lee's eyes shot open as she saw Rory head her way, and she turned around, hiding the bundle in her arms from his sight. "N-nothing..." Hm. Bad cover. "I have to go now..." She hurried back in the direction of the house, pouting that now Rory knew something was up. So much for a surprise. Her plans were further foiled, however, when the little pup in her arms started wiggling about, not wanting to be held any longer. She stopped, trying to get a better hold of the dog and scolding him under her breath, realizing that Rory probably knew what she was holding now. The puppy eventually wiggled right out of her hands, plopping on the ground and waddling back in Rory's direction. Lee lowered her head, defeated. Her surprise was ruined. Sighing, she turned around to face Rory, biting her lip before giving him an awkward, uncomfortable smile.
The puppy let out a short "arf" at Rory as it bounded toward his feet, allowing the boy to get a good look at the animal. A seven week old Blue Merle Australian Shepherd, with light blue eyes to match Rory's. The dog smiled up at him, then "arf"ed a second time, apparently wanting something from the young man.
Mrs. Katan didn't bother heading out of the barn just yet, and instead ordered a stable hand to put away the equipment they'd just taken out. She wasn't much in the mood to see Lee and Rory together right now, anyway, though was curious what that sound was. Certainly not... a puppy?

Rory laughed at the puppy's bottom wiggling around as it tried wagging it's nonexistent tail. He knelt down to pet it, scooping it up and grinning at Lee. "I think your new pet got away from you, girl." He brought the puppy back to her. "Not really a dog I woulda figured you'd get, though. You seem more like you'd get a lapdog."

Lee didn't take the puppy from the boy, instead smiled back at him. "He's not my dog." She rubbed her hands together nervously before shrugging and tilting her head. "Happy Birthday?" Please, please like him...

"Birthday?" Rory looked down at the puppy gnawing and licking on his fingers and smiled then looked at Lee again. "It's ain't till th' 31st, lass, but I love th' present anyway." He flipped the puppy over on it's back a moment. "Hm. Little boy pup. He got a a name, Lee?"

Lee sunk a little when she heard her gift was really early, but was happy to hear he liked the little fella either way. "I thought you might like him, 'cause, ya know, he's got your eyes... Plus, apparently he's good at herding and stuff, and is real energetic. Likes to play a lot, and is supposed to be smart and loyal and... yeah. I thought you'd like him..." She shook her head at his question, smiling back at the boy and the puppy. "That's for you to decide. I've just been calling him 'puppy'."

"I donnae really need a herdin' dog unless you let me hae a few farm animals at th' cottage," Rory chuckled, "but th' rest o' it all sounds good." He looked down at the puppy in his arms, cuddling the little wriggling ball of fluff. "I hae no idea what t' call him." He looked back at Mrs. Katan, seeing her walk out of the stable to see what was going on. "Any suggestions, ma'am, fae a name?"

The woman stepped out of the barn, having been called over by Rory, and folded her arms as she neared him. Mrs. Katan looked over at the puppy before backing up, shooting a rather disgusted look at it. "How about 'Homely Mutt"? Seems rather fitting..." Honestly, what was Lee thinking?
Lee glared at her mother, offended for the dog. "He's not a mutt -- he's a purebred. I have the papers and everything."
"Fine. 'Homely Purebred', if that's what you prefer." The woman shook her head, looking over the patchy dog.
Shaking her head, Lee brought her attention back to the puppy. "Well, they called him 'Gunther' at the pet shop, but I dunno if you wanna keep that. He's old enough to where he doesn't really know what his name is..." She reached a hand out to rub his little head, though pulling it away when he started gnawing on it a bit.

"He ain't nae Gunther, tha's fae sure. Could call him Failinis after th' dog tha' Lugh was supposed t' hae in all th' stories," Rory said, recalling some old didikai folklore. "Not sure you'll remember tha', though."

Lugh? Failinis? What stories were these exactly? Either way, Lee liked the sound of it. "Failinis is cute." She smiled over to the little dog, wondering if the name would stick. Just because she liked it didn't mean Rory'd keep it, and it was his dog, after all.
Mrs. Katan wandered back toward the house, not much interested in talking about dogs' names. There were plenty of other, more enjoyable ways to waste her time...

Rory grinned, suddenly filled with inspiration. "Oi, w' hae this legend about a ki du, a black dog tha's supposed t' help souls t' their next life. This li'l boy's almost all black, eh? Why not call him Ki Du? Easier fae you t' pronounce, yeah?"

That certainly was fitting, considering Rory's ability. Lee's grin widened, and bent down to the puppy's eye level. "You like 'Ki Du'? I think it fits you..." She giggled softly, peering up at Rory for a moment. He liked him well enough, right? He didn't think he was ugly like her mom did, did he?

Rory was completely enthralled by the little pup in his arms. "I ain't ne'er had a dog afore. W' ne'er were able t' really hae them 'cause me mum's allergic an' me little sister is, too. I like 'em, though, an' I love this li'l guy. Who knew somethin' purebred could look so pikey, eh?" He laughed, bringing the dog up to look it in the eyes. "Ne'er seen a blue-eyed dog afore, neither, 'specially one tha' got dead eyes like me."
