Annis clutched on tightly to Loch as she felt the ground below them cracking and breaking, barely swallowing down a shriek. Oh Goddess, they were going to fall again, and if they both fell, then neither of them would get out, would they? They'd be trapped in this damned place forever, and...
Annis watched as Loch grabbed one of the vines he'd just summoned and allowed it to draw them back towards where it had burst out, right near the door. Annis tightened her grip around Loch's waist, not daring to let go as the ground became more precariously cracked. She could hear the screams of what sounded like the beasts of the maze crying in agony, and Annis very nearly shrieked again. She kept her eyes away from the vortex swirling overhead, pushing through the door alongside Loch. Then the door shut behind them, and Annis could feel the same pain all along her body, focused at her temples, and the rushing winds that seemed to lift her up and carry her to another location.
And then, just as before, everything went black.
Annis awoke to Loch squeezing her hand, clutching onto him in a mixture of fear and desperation. Her entire posture relaxed as her eyelids flickered, and she could feel grass below her instead of hard stone. Annis propped herself up against the earth and looked up; stars. The moon was hanging high overhead, barely a sliver of silver.
They were back.
Annis let out a breathless cry, a long shudder of relief falling down her back. "W-We... we did it...! We really did it!" she breathed, and without another word, she practically collapsed against him, hugging Loch tightly. She closed her eyes, feeling the wind rustle against her clothes and her wings and her hair, and she secured her grip a little around Loch's chest.
A short distance away, the tome was now completely blank, resting at the dead center of the bound pages. There was no longer a trace of magic from it, but even as it sat there, the grass just around it was stained blood red.
