No it can't. It can't be a hap because it... is a bowl. Hasufeth came as close as a Dragon could to knitting his brows, eyes flecked a bit yellow with discomfort and confusion. Why did she say it was a hap? It was a bowl! A bowl, for Faranth's sake! Oh, people were confusing...
His brother was ignoring him at least. That was a good thing. The Blue was truly only a bit smaller than Xanthoth, the size of a good Brown himself (and their Hatchling sizes did help minimize the difference), but he still felt very uncomfortable in the Bronze's presence. He was too big, too commanding of attention, too suave and important. Hasufeth felt very inadequate... Yes, it was a good thing his brother was preoccupied. At least this strange Green was small, even if she was horribly misguided in her knowledge of human clothing.

M'rik never took his hand off the jittery Blue's horn knob, rubbing it absently while he talking. Balin- ah, B'lin! That would take getting used to. But B'lin seemed even more stuffy than usual, blushing and mumbling and hardly shaking the poor girl's hand. Never were a Rider and Dragon so different! It was a shame- Nimwae wasn't at all bad looking, and Xanthoth only confirmed B'lin had his eyes on the ladies.
Hey Hasufeth, do you think you could work some, uh... Dragon magic? Get more than a grunt out of that guy? I do not have magic, mine. ... It was a figure of speech. Can't you talk to the Bronze? I would rather not, please, Mine. He was just starting to feel like those two wouldn't look at him... Please? I don't want to stand here and talk for him all night.

Hasufeth flared his nostrils, fidgeting his shoulders a little. He spoke to Xanthoth without turning to face him. Mine says Yours should talk more, please.

If she'd noticed that odd relaxation about his demeanor, Canth didn't make any mention of it out loud; no, such a thing would've just caused him to lock back up all over again and, really, why bother with something that might be perceived as antagonism? She was having enough issues keeping the 'conversation' rolling as was...

"That's good..." Well, obviously, but she couldn't figure what else to say! In fact, it was right then that she'd been about to turn and excuse herself against in a soft mutter-- only to suddenly feel a hand suddenly clamp down on her shoulder and give it a friendly pat. Had she possessed a tail right then, there was no doubt it would have frizzed out like a prickly cactus from surprise.

"Aaah, there you are, my dear!" the stranger, a very odd looking man with glasses, chirped brightly as if they were old friends-- and promptly shoved something into her hands before she could so much as open her mouth to protest. "Just terrible to miss out on such a splendid meal because the crowd is so thick! Here now, sit; eat with your charming friend and stop worrying so much!"

".................." said Canth, so suddenly blindsided but the man (whoever he was) that she just sort of... gaped, blankly, and sank into a seat with the same bewilderment still clinging to her features, staring at the too full plate now apparently in her possession.

Of course the funny stranger was skipping off again before she could even ask his name or what he was doing there, which just made it all the more peculiar.

... Just what was she supposed to do NOW?

Oh, there is Galliath and His! His isn't coming in, so maybe you have to go out to see him? I want to talk with Galliath, so you must keep His distracted. One thing never failed, and that was how much Miith enjoyed Galliath's attention. Their friendship had sprouted quickly, and it was going as strong as the day the two hatched and chased each other around during the Hatching Feast. The memories made E'si smile, and all too glad to get away from the ugly Candidate who was now eying him (in the way one usually eyed E'si).
Really, E'si didn't want to talk to someone who wasn't remotely attractive.

The poor kid would look better if his face was broken, or maybe that would be an illegitimate excuse as to how he turned out so hideous. E'si mused to himself as he stood, his gaze casting once over the cavern. There was Anont... he'd have to come back and congratulate him in a bit. Miith wanted him to see S'van, and he didn't feel like fighting her on it. If anything, it would be a quick greet-and-chat, and E'si would retun to the Hatching Feast to properly congratulate all the Weyrlings that he didn't hate. There were a few of them that he wouldn't like to talk to, whether on prior precedence or just from one glance at them. E'si was judgmental, and that truth about him did not bother him in the least bit.

He tightened the sash around his hips, and made his way out to the Weyrbowl. It wasn't hard to spot S'van and Galliath, if only because Galliath's bulk was the most visible thing in the dark. Carelessly he made his way over to them, not thinking much as to why S'van and Galliath would be out here like this when S'van could be inside and enjoying the Feast. It only occurred to him that something might be up when he got close enough to see how intimately S'van and Galliath seemed to be communicating. "...'Van?"

See? Miith's is here to greet you. He has greeted you! A series of emotions played across S'van's face before he turned to look in E’si’s direction. “Hey.” Perhaps the ‘hey’ was a little brittle, but considering what he had—what they had— so recently experienced, he didn’t think that he could be blamed. He tried to smile, and it was just as brittle as his voice, which sounded gravelly, very much as though he hadn’t used it in Turns. Still, he managed to smile, and for all that it was a pale ghost of his usual cheer, it was… well, it was.

“Noticed your friend Anont Impressed,” he remarked idly, as much attempting to distract himself as he was making simple conversation. He scrubbed at his face for a moment, attempting to remove any ostentatious trace of tears, and let out a breath. “Good for him.” There had been a number of goods that evening, for all of the tragedy that had occurred. S’van would have to seek Inaari out from among the crowd and congratulate her for Impressing. She was probably walking on air, and he had to at least see that. He also had to see M'al, to make certain that he was all right, and to meet his lovely Blue dragonet.

Miith! Will you come to see me? I do not see you. I would like to see you some more. More, he would like the company of his clutchmate to reassure himself that she would not be going between like the Blue from the recent Hatching. That had been quite upsetting, and he had not been truly prepared for the impact that it would have on His. “Been keeping out of trouble?” When did E’si ever keep out of trouble, really? Yeah, no… never. Which meant that S’van simply did not know what sort of trouble he was getting into.

--

The melancholy mood of the Weyrfolk was not lost on Journeyman Harper Vera, who was currently in the process of attempting to drown her sorrows in a glass of wine. … Several glasses, at this point. She carried her panpipes with her, her fingers occasionally idly stroking them from time to time. Xeran had made them for her, after all, and she had been exceedingly grateful for the thought and care that had gone into their creation after her own set had been broken when she had fallen at the end of the previous Hatching.

She was wearing an outfit very akin to what Inaari had dubbed her ‘Vera Dress’, but that was because Ver never wore anything else. The long tunics with the splits at the legs and loose pants beneath suited her needs very well. As a Harper, she could not resist the opportunity to spy on people just a little, and she noticed the little blond in the crowd, and smiled. Yes… that was the girl she had met at the Gather, and she’d gone on to Impress a Green?

Sweet. … Unlike that terrible, wrenching moment when the Blue dragonet had disappeared. All of the screaming, all of the wheeling about had been incredibly distressing, but… she had not been prepared for what had followed. She bit her lip, and looked down into the glass, nursing it absently. Xer had insisted that she get something to eat before bed, and she had taken the (perhaps inappropriate) opportunity to drink. Alas, if only life were as grand and glorious as Harper Tales.

Nandeli had been advised to stay away from the volatile Cheoth during the Hatching, for her own safety as much as Reneneth's. With a younger queen egg in the clutch, they couldn't afford for a fight to break out on the Sands. Thus, she had waited until her gold had informed her that the Hatching was finished before she and the queen left their weyrling barrack and headed down to the Weyrbowl. It had been hard sitting there and only being able to feel the hatching through what Reneneth knew. Apparently a little blue had gone between without choosing his rider, and an egg had not hatched. Just thinking of the poor little things nearly had her in tears all over again, but she had promised herself that she would make sure the new Hatchlings had a proper, happy feast. As a goldrider, it was her duty to the Weyr.

"S'van!" She recognized his brown immediately and made a beeline for her friend, Reneneth following behind her. S'van didn't look like he was in very good shape. Nandeli imagined she would have been in similar shape if she'd been forced to watch that poor blue go between. Still, she was here with a purpose, and she draped an arm as best she could over his shoulder when she reached him and E'si. Reneneth greeted the older dragons with a soft croon. "I can't stay long but I'll be back," Nandeli told him quietly, reaching out to pat his cheek affectionately. "You be good, okay?" She gave him a quick hug, hoping he would be okay until she got back. E'si was here, so he should be fine. Speaking of which…. She made sure to attempt to give E'si a quick hug of his own before she fled towards the main gathering, her gold moving neatly behind.

"I heard Anont Impressed… you know that boy we met while comparing notes?" She told Reneneth as they walked. He was so adorable she could have just pinched his cheeks. And he was friends with E'si! Who would have ever thought E'si could have friends? If he hadn't been hanging out with S'van then she would have gladly dragged her favourite greenrider (or at least one of her favourites) off to go and congratulate his one true love. I mean, his best friend. Right. "I don't see him anywhere though… I wish I knew what I was looking for. I hear it was a brown…" Nandeli's face scrunched up into a frown as she tried to see over the crowd. Perhaps if she went and stood on a bench.

She had just moved towards the tables when she suddenly found herself blocking the path of a rather unimpressed brown. Aha! A brown! But did he belong to Anont? The Nose turned her attention to his rider, and found to her dismay that it was someone she didn't know. Still, she fixed him with her best mega-watt grin. "Hullo there! I can’t say I remember you face but that's okay, because I don't think we've ever met before. I'm Nandeli, and this is Reneneth. Were you guys making your way towards the tables?"

You are Varth, Reneneth said immediately as she came up beside her rider. He seemed angry. Was he the one who had been fighting with the younger queen in the beginning? She did not know, but she would not judge him before he spoke to her. I am Reneneth. We are looking for a boy named Anont. His is also a brown. Do you know him?

When Varth came to a sudden halt, A'bri nearly tripped over his tail. He managed to avoid it, which was probably a good thing in such a crowded setting- he likely would have landed on someone, and that would have been unfortunate. Looking up to see why Varth had stopped, he was met with the sight of a lovely young woman he didn't know. Which to his mind was a terrible pity.

Flashing her a bright smile, a little more of his depression fading in the presence of someone to meet, he gave her a slightly theatrical bow when he noticed her stunning Gold. "Hello! No, I don't think we've met before, I'd remember such a beautiful pair! I'm A'bri, and this is Varth." He made the introduction purely for Nandeli's sake, since he was pretty sure the dragons were handling that themselves. "We were heading for the drinks, actually, I don't think I can sit still yet."

:Yes, I am Varth,: Varth agreed, pulling himself up to his full height and observing the new Gold with wary interest. Cheoth, after all, had been somewhat frightening, and Arioth was... well, Arioth, so he was a bit hesitant. Still, His wanted him to make friends, and he was supposed to be proving he had manners... :Hello, Reneneth. Mine was talking to Mitsukazeth's, and I believe his calling is A'nt. He might be the one you and Yours are looking for, Mitsukazeth is also a brown.: Not as impressive a Brown as he was, of course, but definitely a Brown.

Catching Varth's part of the exchange, A'bri gave Nandeli another bright smile. "Are you looking for A'nt? He was sitting down over that way, I can take you over if you want." He didn't need a drink that badly, after all, certainly not if he could be helpful instead.

O'asis got a brief moment of air while Rinfala was away. Shards, he hadn't wanted to get grilled on Kyllae's behalf, especially right now... but someone needed to carry the blame. If it made Rin feel a little better to have confronted him, maybe it was worth it. Assuming that she would be able to move beyond it later....

Then she was back, and it was time to stop entertaining such thoughts. "Hey, that looks good!" he commented of her drink, trying to get a better look at its contents. "What is it?"

Then you should find better ways to teach him lessons, Uktenath advised. Yours is very smart, and has a mind for such things. If Varth bothers you again, ask her what to do. Of course, the idea that Rinfala might do the mild thing and instruct Arioth to let the matter go did not occur to Uktenath. Surely she, being bonded to Arioth, would know that a Queen was not to be insulted without consequence!

Grinning, Rinfala tipped the cup slightly so he could see it better. "Fruit drink. Furred greenfruit, I think." Taking a sip, she grinned in delight and nodded. "Yeah, it is!" Now, Rinfala liked a lot of the fruits Ista could offer, but furred greenfruit had to be her favorite. Who cared if your mouth went a little numb after five or six? They were GOOD! "I think I saw some margaritas over there too, if you're not into fruit." And with that, she took a bite of porcine, glad for the fact that it a] wasn't fish, and b] wasn't burnt.

Actually, it was pretty damn good.

An even longer silence stretched out now, as Arioth tried to figure out if she was offended or flattered by Uktenath's advice. Since he'd complimented Hers, she eventually went with flattered. Yes, Mine is very smart. She will know what to do to him to teach him a lesson. A whirl of blue entered her eyes, happy at the thought of one-upping Varth with an idea Hers might have. That is a good idea.

Ryugen
"I know it's happened in the past, dragons not finding their partner." He admitted. "I just didn't think I'd see it. Especially not now when we've got so damn many candidates." He laughed a little at this, with a faintly bitter edge. He himself wasn't Weyrborn, though living in a weyr at all you were forced to accept the risk that death could happen, on the sands, in the air, in training... and almost inevitably in thread fall, when it happened. Being a Wingleader, you also had to accept the potential that deaths could happen on your watch, but he still couldn't escape the screams of the blue, as though it had been rendered blind to whatever it was that they used to find their own. Maybe it had.
"They do." He agreed thoughtfully. "But I can't think of one of us who's impressed who would change that. Even after a hatching like this one."
Perhaps even because of it. It outlined the lives of the dragons that had made it that much more sharply, since they seemed to be healthy and whole, if some were as dangerously tempered as their mother.

He did manage a faint smile at that. "Yes. I wouldn't change it for all the world. Without a doubt, Naedreth's the best thing that has ever and will ever happen to me." Even if he was unbelivably proud, and didn't seem to be able to entertain the idea that they would grow up to be anything less than Weyrleaders, the bronze was amazing, wonderful, perfect. He could keep that pride in check, sort of, and if they did fail at things in the future, it was good to know that his lifemate would just be faintly confused for a while and then try again. Failure for them would never be permenant, they'd never give up, not ever.

"I... don't know if this is a good time to raise this, or if you're a good person to raise this with," C'mor said slowly after some moments. "I just thought as a wingleader, you might know more than I do. This crowding problem... it's getting awful now, everyone can see that. I was wondering if you knew of any plans to resolve it." Plans for a new Weyr. They needed a new Weyr, S'kagi seemed like a sane man who would be able to see that. He only hoped, but somehow did not believe, that Helirra saw things the same way. Why hadn't she done anything yet? It was incomprehensible.

"Knowing the Weyrwoman... and given Favan's temperment, I'm fairly well assured it's not being ignored." S'kagi answered, grimacing faintly at the complicated and prickly subject. "I haven't been privy to the discussions, but I'm sure it's under debate. Favan doesn't want to be a Junior Weyrwoman forever, she's too ambitious." he didn't add that this was perhaps 'too ambitious for her own good'. She was a firey woman, and while that wasn't bad, he wasn't sure she was as prepared as she thought she was. That was an opinion probably better kept to himself. "The problem I suspect we're facing is that it's complicated. "No thread is falling, no queens have been lost, and founding a Weyr is an enormous and lengthy proposition. It's not as though we can majestically wave a hand and have crafters magically build a new Weyr overnight, and because the dragon population is also growing, we can't simply fix the problem with temporary structures for the men and women of the Weyr. Neither can we simply ask people to go home, though I think if we see any more wine theives or the like, Z'nal may risk a month of night watch to argue the point with the Weyrwoman himself." He offered a wry smile at this, hoping it addressed some of the undoubted frustrations in the Weyr.
Well, perhaps answered was too strong a word, but spoke to.
"I have a great deal of respect for the Weyrwoman, and a great deal of faith that even if she doesn't feel the need to speak to it until a solution is in view, she's not one to pretend the problem doesn't exist."

"Well shards, I'd be amiss if I didn't get to try one, then!" O'asis decided, turning his head toward the refreshments. He smiled once at the group and nodded his head, excusing himself to get a drink and pick up a few morsels for his own sampling - and Uktenath's too, if the bronze were feeling daring today.

It is not a matter of daring, Uktenath corrected his, but practicality. I enjoy my red meat very much. The food cooked in the kitchen, he'd come to decide, was just not served in portions to his liking. The day that someone made a bubbly pie the size of a baby herdbeast, was the day that Uktenath would gladly devour the food of the humans. Or at least, would be willing to give it a fair try.

There's a strange man holding your friend! Ormeteth piped up after G'ran had already surged to his feet, startled by the sudden appearance of a hand. Of course, when it was an older man simply talking to Canthry as though he knew her, the giant awkwardly sat back down and grunted, clearing his throat. A plate was forced about the girl, and then the other toddled off without another word.

'Course, considering her expression, G'ran was no longer so sure she knew the guy. "...You... know him?" He growled, turning his head slightly to try and follow the stranger with his eye until the man was gone. Why would he give Canthry food if he didn't even know her? Looking out for Candidates, maybe?

Or he was just a sharding wherry, that was always a good choice.

If she does not want it, she may set it on the floor? The brown offered.

"You just ate."

"..." said Canth at first, her mouth opening very much like a stranded fish and then closing again. She was still staring at the man's vanishing back (even while she was sitting), not really certain what to do, it seemed, until her mind registered that G'ran was asking her something.

"Actually, I've... never spoken to him before," she muttered slowly, dropping her gaze down to the plate full of Faranth only KNEW what feasting goods. "I think he was in the stands..."

Had he been? She could barely remember any faces in particular, but there was no reason for him to really be there otherwise!... Now, what exactly was she doing here again? Sitting? Supposedly eating? Conversing?

"... Does Ormeteth want something?" she couldn't help but ask at her 'companion's' rather... er, funny outburst, forced to assume that the dragonet had made some food-related comment. She'd even snuck a look down at the funny little creature to see what he was doing.

What a smile!

Nan's mood brightened instantly when A'bri grinned at her, and she even giggled at his bow. People seemed to be bowing to her a lot more now that she was a goldrider, but she wasn't about to complain. Though she was no longer a member of the tuber peeling corner, the gossip she was picking up thanks to Reneneth was ten times as good as the stuff she'd spread in the kitchens. Not to mention all the respect and privileges that were awarded to her! Er, rather, the ones that she had to work for. But it was all worth it in the end.

"A'bri and Varth! The pleasure is all mine, I assure you! And drinks sound excellent. Would you mind too much if I joined you?" She was tempted to throw an arm over his shoulder and guide them but decided against it. One never knew how a hatchling would react to having theirs touched, especially after such a violent Hatching. Nan didn't want to piss anyone off, especially a boy who had the makings of a potential friend. "How long ago did you get to the Weyr anyways? You must have been Searched for this clutch, though I suppose you could have been Searched earlier. Do you remember the rider? I don't know too many of them but I do know some. Some of the new Wingriders went out on Search so I know all of them. Where did you come from anyways? I mean, originally." Typical Nan. Ask them a million questions and see how many you could get answers to.

Reneneth did not seem to be upset or angry when the brown drew himself up, instead keeping her posture rather relaxed. She had nothing to fear from this young brown, especially since she was not only older but bigger. And she was a queen. Nobody would dare harm a queen. Still, he seemed agitated somehow. No doubt the hatching had been quite stressful. I believe that is who Mine is looking for. We met him not too long ago. He is a very nice boy. He will do well with His. You and Yours will as well.

The Nose perked up the mention of A'nt. "Is that how he's shortening his name? How cute! We're friends, you know, him and me. Adorable boy if you ask me. I'll have to go over and see him before the night is over."

Well, it wasn't like her to do it when she was upset, but she supposed she could chalk it up to spending too much time with Cordel. Either way, La was in a distinctly 'drown-your-sorrows' mood, and Isonth wasn't much better. The big dragon was not present, preferring instead to sleep off the sharpest edge of the sorrow. Of course, that meant her rider was toughing things out alone.

Or close enough. In this case, she had the company of a recently-tapped cask of redfruit cider. She wasn't quite upset enough to wish there was something stronger, but she certainly wasn't feeling her best. Ugh...her first time on-duty as a dragonhealer at a Hatching...and two dragonets lost. She was taking it harder than she should, probably. Well, certainly. She knew it intellectually.

At least she wasn't passing up the hard work of the kitchens entirely. She had taken a bit of a few dishes and the plate sat half-finished in front of her, pushed back to allow her mug center-stage. To say she was staring broodily into it would be a lie. She was actually staring at the sky, more thoughtful than broody. Dark expressions didn't work well on La's face, even when she was trying.
"Hey."

Zara's voice was quiet, and her expression sober. Slowly sitting down next to La, she looked up at the sky as well. "Don't...don't be too hard on yourself," she said after a moment's pause. "There's nothing you could have done for him, or the egg. The damage was already done." Hesitantly, she reached to give La a hug, hoping to comfort her.

The human contact made La flinch slightly from surprise, and she turned to the speaker and saw Zara. …oh. That was…aw. “Hey yourself, Zara,” she said quietly, shifting and hugging the bluerider back. “I know, it’s just…shards.” She shook her head, unable to get rid of the horrific memory of the little blue and the dead egg. “Shards,” she repeated, unsure of what to say. She wasn’t going to cry again; she’d gotten quite enough of that done at the Hatching itself, and now she was waiting for the numbness of shock to set in.

“It…that scared me. More than any of the other Hatchings ever have,” she murmured. “I’ve never felt so powerless.”
