Freedom the wolf
OwQ I must say, I lik the idea of a city on the waves, with tether floating airship docks.....but for some strange reason atlantis comes to mind thinking about it.

I'm trying to shy away from Atlantis, but 'tis awkward when dealing with a floating city.

I'm slightly surprised that there seems to be a fairly even mix of votes for flying/floating/underwater - would it be safe to say that people want a mixture of these three?

And how exactly can we have a ship which flies on the air, floats on the water and is submerged all at the same time?.....

Design time!

I've been sketching some designs (see previous page); I proposed a vessel - predominantly floating on water - which had significant underwater sections, as well as a tethered flying dock/etc. (which can be reeled in in case of storms etc.).

EDIT

I've got a new idea pending, similar to J but bringing in the 'original' flying design a bit more; has a lot more ground area, more room for interesting stuff. I hope I can pull it off right.
And yes, parts of it (if not all) will fly.

I simply adore the idea of an underwater city. Iseult's picture was gorgeous.
Just imagine, like a Victorian steam Atlantis, hidden beneath the surface and abuzz with activities. Or above the water, like giant brass cog afloat in the waves.
Mechanical fish maybe? I must say, sea teal and steam bronze are very beautiful colour combination.

How about a city with various strata.

A portion at the sea floor. Mostly research and laboratory facilities. Connect that via bathysphere cable cars to...

A portion anchored above it at the water's surface. This would have buildings both above and below water level. This would be residential, business, and docks for seafaring craft. Connect that via cable cars to...

A portion flying. Mostly airship facilities.

In event of SEVERE emergency, not only the air dock can be reeled in but it and the surface plate can both be drawn below the water, protecting the city from typhoons, or attacks. In the event of the latter, explosive buoys could be let out, turning the sea above into a mine field.

Of course, the approach of severe storms could be observed well in advance from the air dock, and Submerge Wardens would be able to secure the streets from stragglers well in advance.

Perhaps the city could be in actual fact a collection of ships?
You have submarines, ship, and aircraft!

The underwater idea is intriguing, but i'm kind of in love with the idea of a massive airship city.

Currently, the design already has the floating and flying parts similar to those you mentioned; but I did not want to make the city static - and to that effect any underwater parts would have to be on the underside of the floating section; as averse to built onto the sea floor.

The idea of the city going underwater is very tempting; but that would necessitate the entire city being made out of watertight domes etc., and in event of attack would become very leaky soon.

Everyone quickly rushing indoors like its some sort of Air Raid sounds very grim to me. D:
Besides, islands weather storms, so why can't we? And if it's really bad, we can just move elsewhere in time - the city would be like a giant ship, after all.

I did muse about that, but I felt it a bit insubstantial. Besides, any city would have plenty of such vehicles anyways.

I know exactly what you mean, it makes it very hard for me to decide. D:

Oh help, I cannot decide - there are so many wonderful ideas being passed around, I know not which to include or go with.

Here are some of my thoughts:

I notice there is a lot of desire to have a flying city - and I am all for that, what with steampunk being airships aplenty. Whilst I love the idea, several things bug me, specifically:
- it'd be yet-another-flying-steampunk-thing
- significant danger of falling off
- if we're not a balloon, think of the fuel requirement!
If it is flying, undoubtedly the "best" option would be an airship-suspended city. However, this is not as "interesting" as, say, a propeller-lifted city (think of the fuel requirements!) as it is 'now'.

Personally, I really like the idea of a floating city - sailing the ocean, as a port of call for not just airships but steamboats and submarines as well. Methinks this has several advantages:
- Safer (less danger from falling, for a start)
- More inclusive - airships, boats, submarines.
- Can be larger more realistically.
Not only this, but it can also have:
- A flying section tethered to it, possibly acting as docks, more residence, or lush gardens.
- An underwater section - specifically, vast underwater domes of thick glass, filled with not just laboratories but also homes for the fish-loving and restaurants and such. Also submarine/bathysphere pens and such.
Whilst I love the idea of different bits (as Mylian mentioned); I do refer the idea of keeping most of the city together, and three parts just seems too much.

That said, I do like underwater stuff - so a totally submerged city is tempting. I am particularly reminded of the very nice underwater city in Leviathan Rising - which was pulled off very well.
However, it does strike me as a bit 'limiting'. Even if there is a water-level section, it does rather limit interaction and airships.

So how about the flying and submerged sections are symmetrical, with the hydraulic elevators going in between? The floating part can be the main part of the city. Around the edges of all the parts could be propellors, which can be turned on individually to enable the city to move in every direction without needing to turn.

The flying section can be residential/airport/gardens (love the gardens idea, by the way!). The floating can be both commercial and residential - like a hub of the city, with ports for boats. The submerged part can be storage, more commercial (a grimier feel to it - more crime etc) and such stuff.

Then a partially submerged city would seem ot be a good option, with the upper above water sections able to retract or with hidden weaponry in case of attack.
