Well.... he begins. That....really depends on the type of man. sweatdrop
It makes sense, for example, that a courting maiden would go out of his way to be noticed and beautiful for the lady he hopes to impress. And he might look a lot like the young man he's shown Boyan.
As then there are men who are not openly 'advertising' themselves but who still wish to look nice because their line of work requires them to be seen by the public regularly.
It is into this second category that Hitsuga falls, and his makeup rituals involve liner and a bit of powder and rouge.
The main thing, he explains, is learning what is too much and what's not enough.

Powder and rouge, hm?
Boyan thinks, actually, that he understands what "too much" is.
"Too much" is what his granddaughters pile on his face when they shove him into miniskirts and high-heeled shoes. sweatdrop He doesn't like lipstick because he can taste it, he doesn't like to wear foundation because it rubs off, he has a hard time putting on liner and mascara, but he can do it, and he kind of likes eye shadow... sweatdrop

Hitsuga's brain actually....almost....allows itself to conjure the image Boyan has suggested and he forcefully slaps it away from his mind's eye before it has a chance to take on definition. There are some things one simply cannot unsee once seen... xp
Yes th-that's most definitely too much...

Boyan wore liner and mascara last time, but he didn't really know what to do with his hair, so he just brushed it out.
It's pretty long; maybe he should cut it.

Boyan would be surprised how easily even the longest hair can be collected on top of one's head.
It is not very hard to do, once you know how. Or even just tying it back, as Hitsuga does, if he doesn't want to be troubled quite that much.
.....of course, he goes on, eyeing Boyan's disheveled gold mane, still a bit sudsy in places
It would, perhaps, be something best tried after its been freshly-washed...

Hmmmmm, Boyan thinks again.
But then again, is there really a point to pinning his hair up all nice and pretty when it's just going to get tousled again? sweatdrop

Hitsuga supposes that's Boyan's call, really... sweatdrop
It would need to be taken down before he goes to sleep anyway, so doing it up isn't exactly meant to last.
He supposes the real question here is, would Boyan's wife appreciate seeing it looking nice and pretty, however short a while?

Boyan thiiiiiiiiiiiiiiinks....
His wife is so much more pleased with him when he is well-groomed, yes.
But, he suddenly thinks. Argh. For him to be talking as if he were courting her again-- even if, he believes, he never really COURTED her in the first place; they'd simply been together most of their lives and that is the way it was, is, and will ever be.
But now, all of a sudden, after being apart so long that Boyan's heart felt as if it were being ripped away from him, she finally comes home and all he wants to do is IMPRESS her.
BOYAN knows there is more to him than being simply "Dumb-ol'-Boyan". HITSUGA knows. ...Boyan hopes. And Melody and Tsuyoshi know, and Silver, and Nusumu, and Amena, and Coya, and Gongjin, and Boyue, and even Tsubame knows! But sometimes? Sometimes he just doesn't FEEL it, y'know?
This is complicated stuff. Something that a new hairstyle or makeup won't change.

Hitsuga does, in fact, believe that there is much more to Boyan than the surface he presents. That was made more than apparent to him a few days ago.
And even now, just hearing him talk on this subject....
The perfumer offers a tentative smile. It is his belief that stupidity goes hand-in-hand with not looking at those around you, and not caring about how you may affect them.
The fact Boyan does....the fact Boyan is worried what those close to him may think of him, says quite a bit, he thinks.
....and he also thinks that a new hairstyle or makeup isn't particularly meant to change a person. It is meant to make its wearer feel and look good, either for themselves or for another. But they are still who they always were...its really no different from buying and wearing a new outfit.

Well, not to undervalue a pretty outfit, either. Or a temporary change in behavior. Like a costume, almost, to make things more fun!
Perhaps, Boyan thinks, he might be more nervous because this is the first time he's ever LIVED with Tsubame. Even when they were married, they were still living... somewhat like children, Boyan supposes. The only time they saw each other was at Grandpa Tsukiba's, and, well...
At least they're not defiling Grandpa's closet anymore? sweatdrop
BUT NOW, he realizes, Tsubame seeing him all the time is... well...not really SCARY, but...
Okay, maybe a little scary. What if Boyan does something stupid? ....StupidER, that is. And he doesn't want to bore her either and...
This grown-up stuff was so much easier when he was raising young children.

He chooses to ignore the part about the closet being defiled...
Hitsuga admits he really can't speak from experience as he's never been really married, but....
After so much time apart, Master Boyan and his Tsubame may just....need to get to know one another all over again. And that in itself, could be fun, yes...?

At this, Boyan visibly brightens.
The chance to get to know Tsubame all over again...
Hmmmm...
Well maybe they could-- and then perhaps-- and then--
...
Hmm.

....
Not knowing what's going through Boyan's mind, and fairly sure he does not WANT to know, Hitsuga turns back to the sink to resume scrubbing out the pot, leaving the oracle to think on this for as long as he'd like.

--So then Hitsuga will show Boyan how to be good-looking and stuff then, right? ...And maybe, just maybe, Boyan should try to act a little more like his age...
Which means no more intentionally pushing peoples' buttons just to play with their reactions... sweatdrop

Hitsuga tenses a bit at Boyan's last remark. Was that what he'd been doing...? The perfumer isn't sure whether to be relieved that it was nothing personal or annoyed to be treated like some sort of toy.
....he chooses option C, for now, which is to file it away and think about it later.
He will, of course, help Master Boyan and show him what he's able.
