That is because the Items you have lost have become Super secret ninjas and can only keep using their secret ninjaness for a preset amount of time. After that they just poof back into existence for you to find. >_>

Only wisdom I have to put in here:
NEVER put something where it'd be easy to find and right in plain sight. You will lose it nine outta ten times. Oh, and if you think "Nah, it'd never be there!" It's there. Trust me.
Either that, or it's just me and the genetics passed down from my Gram which led her to call the locksmith to unlock her car while the windows were down. sweatdrop
