The sleek tips of London’s elongated fangs seemed to shorten to their previous length as Godfrey hastened to explain himself, a flush of blood settling across London’s collarbone from her moment of terror. Her lips curved into a somewhat apologetic smile. “I’m not his guardian so the hospital doesn’t…” the professor paused and let the thought go unfinished. “I’m relieved to hear he’s doing better,” she said softly.

Kholby watched the conversation as it progressed, from his sister’s sudden surge and ebbing of emotion, to Godfrey’s patient explanations and expressions of concern, to Circinus’s polite silence. He inched closer to Godfrey, wordlessly tucking his feverishly warm hand in Godfrey’s, tilting his head to rest it against Godfrey’s arm as though he’d performed the gesture a hundred times.

Godfrey looked down at the boy, surprised to feel the touch, but smiled slightly and gave Kholby's hand a light squeeze.
"Yeah, he's..." Godfrey paused, wondering who was Kholby's guardian then, but maybe they just hadn't arrived for the birthday party yet.
"They said he can come home, once he's healed up." Godfrey smiled further, face now flushed with happiness. He was so happy his Papa was coming home, that he'd remembered them, could remember them for more than spats of a few hours at most. "We're getting things ready at home already."

“Presents?” Kholby asked in a low mewl of a voice.

“Yes,” Circinus said after a moment, sweeping past Godfrey and Kholby on heeled boots, “Presents.” He flounced into the rather bland hospital room, its walls and the bedding all the same shade of off white. A wire rabbit cage was housed on the circular table near the pink-curtained window but its inhabitant was mysteriously absent. Circinus wrinkled his nose at the wood shavings that served as litter at the bottom of the cage but set the cake and gifts on the table beside the cage anyway.

"Presents!" Godfrey agreed. He knew how impatient he could be about presents, and wasn't going to keep Kholby's from him with idle chatter. It was his birthday, after all.
He turned and followed after Circinius... though not as bouncily, and while trying not to stare at his shins in his high-heeled boots, which he'd always liked. He was, of course, still holding Kholby's hand.
The room was what he expected, just like Papa's. But he saw the empty rabbit cage and winced a bit. Poor rabbit, he hadn't come in time with his present to save it. Ahh.. well... oh well.

“The first one is from Theo,” Circinus explained smoothly, pausing to wait for London to enter the patient room as well. There was chatter coming from down the hall – no doubt another family was visiting its ailing child. “He had classes to teach,” he added as he plucked the present from the pile and offered it to Kholby.

London entered the room and released the balloon immediately, allowing them to tumble towards the ceiling with their strings trailing in slow spirals. She clicked the door shut behind herself.

Kholby took the present wordlessly in his free and unceremoniously shook it until the wrapping paper tore on its own, fluttering to the floor in tattered strips. A pair of silk pajamas checkered with dancing rabbits flapped free in his hand and fell to the floor with a thump as Kholby released it, squeezing Godfrey’s fingers reflexively. “I don’t wanna go to sleep,” the twelve year old muttered rebelliously.

"You don't have to go to sleep now." Godfrey said, confused but knowing Kholby wasn't going to react in expected ways to everything. "You still have presents to open, and cake to eat, if you want it."
Godfrey lightly squeezed Kholby's hand again. It was cute how he didn't want to let go of his hand, even to open presents.
"Those are nice pajamas though." Godfrey suddenly imagined Professor Nott buying those in a store. He grinned. The circumstances were.. different.. but he liked knowing more about his Professors. Or, knowing them better at least.

“Kay,” Kholby mumbled, but his voice remained low and sullen as if he didn’t believe he wouldn’t be ushered into bed.

Attentive eyes – as dark as lightless caverns – watched Kholby as he continued to unwrap presents from London’s friends and co-workers; a set of rounded-edged blocks, fingerpaints, several stuffed animals, a collection of comfortable cotton sweatshirts. The final present was a pale white rabbit just larger than Kholby’s palm, which London drew from her wand and deposited directly in the cage. “Made out of paper,” London mouthed in an indirect explanation to Godfrey before the boy had a chance to grimace.

Godfrey smiled, watching Kholby unwrap present after present. He did feel somewhat uncomfortable, but he hadn't known so many people and Professors knew Kholby.
He kept thinking someone else was going to show up as well, despite the closed door. London showed up, she clearly loved her brother, but wasn't his guardian. She hadn't even been informed about the incident. But.... it really wasn't polite to speculate about his Professor's private family matters.
Godfrey's mouth formed a silent 'Oh.' Well, yeah.... that made a lot of sense.
He grinned sheepishly.

“Cake,” announced Cirinus from the table; as Kholby had rent through wrapping after wrapping, the history teacher had been sectioning slices of cake – flawlessly cut, not a crumb of chocolate out of order – and placing them on small paper plates. Plastic spoons were the utensil of choice. A wave of his wand produced several comfortable lavender armchairs.

“Wanna sit in your lap,” Kholby announced quietly to Godfrey, still clutching his hand and remaining snuggled close to the older boy.
