Nehren felt awkward hearing L’thor appolgise, it should have been a privet word exchange but he tried to avoid eves dropping which was harder than it sounded considering he was standing so close to the pair. As something to look at and distract him he watched the flits instead, intrigued by the small golden flitt even if they held less interest for him than dragons being a far more common sight among ordinary folk the gold was still something to behold. The hide shinning like her much larger cousin crouched on the hatching sands within.
If he had really had any idea where to go he would have tried to make a quite get away, his manners less attuned than Vesyes by his parenting feeling no draw to introduce himself and make idle conversation if there wasn’t a need for it, too bad that L’thor seemed to have other ideas and made the introductions for him. He kept up his smile though and nodded to each of them as their names and origins were presented to him. He had to admit that hearing Conimor had grown up here was a draw in itself, who knew what kind of wisdom and advice he could impart.
“Greetings Vesyes, Conomor.” he told them moving aside to let the others move to the gap. “thank you, the ride was fine.” he replied although he thought the boy asked from politeness more than genuine interest, not that he blamed him. But he also couldn’t help feeding off the others excitement a little looking at the eggs, it was common ground he guested, a yearning all candidates must share to see those eggs hatching and impress the dragon within. “Yes I saw the blue egg move.” he admitted and his smile widened a bit and became more genuine for a moment. “But I don’t think the Queen is ready to let them go just yet she moved it back into the main clutch,” after all there was still time enough if the touching had not even taken place yet.

Well, good, at least he wasn't cross. L'thor nodded to Veyes' suggestion. "Yes, that sounds good to me. All I have left to do today is watch duty, and that isn't until much later on." Middle of the night actually. Ah well, everyone had to draw that one sometimes, and honestly he found the night watches no more arduous than the day ones. Being watchrider was dull no matter what the colour of the sky happened to be. He hated just sitting there with nothing to do but watch.
..He'd said he'd show Veyes his weyr if he was interested, but that hadn't happened so they could do that... and then they could go for a fly or something. Yes. Veyes would like that. Now that he was in a happier mood again, River was ignoring him, preferring to ogle Gilden. He kept his perch on L'thor shoulder at least through, rather than flying over and trying to sit beside the little queen on Conomor's shoulder. Quite nice shoulders the young man had. Sad when the hot ones were not only too young, but also too straight... At least he thought Conomor was straight. Maybe in a turn or two it would be worth his while asking.
*****
Conomor hurried up to the crack, crouching down so that he could peer into the sands along with Veyes. "Yes, they've been moved since last I saw them!" he exclaimed happily, turning to glance back at Nehren as the boy mentioned seeing an egg move. "That's great! The touching will have to be pretty soon then." He was going to make it this time! He could feel it in his bones, could picture himself walking across the sands to lay hands on the shells... The moment couldn't come soon enough. On his shoulder, Gilden crooned softly as she too looked in at the eggs, apparently as enchanted by the sight as everyone else present.
Having seen enough for now, Conomor lent back from the crack and pushed himself back to his feet. Perhaps he ought to volunteer to take Nehren down to the dorms, give Veyes a chance to talk to L'thor... Might as well; worst that could happen was Nehren refusing. "Would you like me to show you down to the Candidate dorms, Nehren?" he asked with a smile. "There won't be many people around down there just now, so you'll have leisure to pick out your bunk rather than trying to push past a lot of people." From what he'd seen of the younger boy so far, that much would be a welcome prospect.

Veyes stood up from the crack with wide eyes filled with the wonder of the approaching arrival of the new hatchlings. But in that he heard L'thor's words and smiled as he slowly turned toward the group moving aside for Con to take his peek.
"I would like that." he said to L'thor then brushed the tangle of wet hair out of his face from the most recent bath. Something about his own response though had made him feel edgy and nervous inside. Why today of all days he was getting these quirky odd sensations and feelings he would never know but a the moment he was glad L'thor had made the suggestion.
Then he had to respond to Con's excitement knowing exactly how he felt. "I think you're right, Con." He knew a little about Con's determination and the reason for his intense need to make it to the touching and hatching - bad luck had been Con's undoing in the past.
"Mmmm...yes, the dorms aren't busy right now." nodding at Con's words. "But I did notice that several bunks were filling up. I got lucky enough to find a corner bunk." Nehren seemed nice enough - quiet like himself. He wasn't sure where the kid was from but he didn't appear to be a farmer; he was small and not too muscular even though he looked to be in good shape - he had a cute face. Oh geesh, why did he notice that of all things???

Nehren relaxed alittle internally, yes he was still nervous being among strangers but the mood seemed pleasant and the atmosphere if a little unsure was genuinely welcoming, no one had any wish to fight or do anything malicious intent. So he could relax. And he enjoyed watching the flits and the blues great show of interest towards the fine queen if he could not hope to fly her. He guessed the blue must be almost as amorous as the greens as they were the ones that so often flew them.
More confirmation that the touching would be anyday now. Well that was encouraging but he faltered at Conomors offer, he knew it was offered with good intent but truthfully he would have rather stayed with L’thor who he was most familiar with. But looking between L’thor and Vesyes it was clear to see that they wanted some time. He put on his usual smile but moved reluctantly away. “Yes, thank you Conomor I’d like that.” he lied. But it was true that introducing himself to his new sleeping quarters while it was still quite quiet was an appealing idea.
He took his leave first ducking out past the rider and two younger males quickly and into the large bowl, pressing his back against the rough worked stone punished by the elements over the years and waited. He would have gone himself rather than put the other candidate through the trouble but he had no idea where it was so that left that as an invalid option. And he was really to shy to ask one of the busy looking weyr folk for help or really deny Con’s help as it might leave the man feeling rejected. He sighed, nothing was ever easy and he had a feeling his life had just become infinitely more complicated.

Conomor smiled and waved farewell to his butchery mentor, giving a polite nod the the rider as well before setting off beside Nehren. Small talk wasn't his best skill, but he wanted to find some way to put the younger Candidate at his ease... "So, where do you come from then?" he asked as they walked slowly through the twisting a turning passageways of the Weyr; he hoped the slow pace would give Nehren a slightly better chance of remembering some of his way around. "Like L'thor told you, I'm a weyrbrat so I'm always interested to hear what life away from this place is like." Smiling, he added; "I'm always happy to ramble on about this place too, if there's anything you'd like to know."
Every time he met a new Candidate he tried to find out a little about where they were from, what it was like. A lot of wyerfolk saw Hold life as irrelevant to their own existence, but how could they? The Holds supported them, fed them, clothed them, and should they not understand the people they were bound to protect? Should they not be able to empathize with and perhaps predict their reactions to a crisis? Conomor certainly felt they ought to understand, felt is should be compulsory for everyone to understand, or at the very least for every rider.
*****
L'thor smiled and waved farewell to Nehren. "Goodbye for now then; I'll come and find you later on to check on how you're doing." He could look out for both youths at once no trouble; more things to do with his time always pleased L'thor, who got bored as easily as a small child when he had nothing to do.
"Well then," he turned to Veyes with another slightly abashed smile as River gave a disappointed cheep at the miniature queen's departure from his shoulder. "Sorry again. I said I'd look out for you, and I haven't been doing that. I shall do my best to make it up to you, but if you have any choice words you would like to say to me, do feel free." He'd probably have something to say were their positions reversed, but then he was a naturally short-tempered, intolerant, egotistical tailfork.
"Oh, you're not quite that bad," his dragon chuckled inside his head. "Well, not always anyway," she amended thoughtfully.
Smiling and shaking his head, L'thor return his attention to Veyes. "How about we go up to my weyr? Raith's up there, and she'd love to see you. Given I've plenty of free time right now we can go off for a fly if you like."
"Oh yes! I would like to see him," Raith said as she rooted information about who the lad in question was out of her rider's mind. "Xerrineth and His have just left for drills, so he will not need to worry about meeting anyone new."
Well, that was good; it seemed Nehren's presence had perturbed his young friend enough already without throwing another new person into the mix.

Veyes watched Nehren duck on by almost like he wanted to become invisible against the wall. It almost made Veyes chuckle because that very action might have been something he would have done a few years ago but now, he was too big and it looked more awkward when he did it.
"See you later, Con." he said quickly as they walked away. He knew that eventually they'd probably meet up again. It wasn't too bad having Con in the meat locker with him. Kind of strange that he actually enjoyed the company but maybe the silence there needed to be broken every now and then. Maybe he just felt more comfortable because they were in a work environment and it was easier to relate with anyone when you are both set to the same task.
"Mmm....its ok, L'thor. I know you have a lot of work. I shouldn't be taking up your time really." he shuffled slightly from one foot to the other slightly unsure of himself but feeling better now that he wasn't in a group. It would take a bit of time to work through the social dynamics that he had not much experience in.
But then he laughed a little at L'thor's words, "Oh, I'm not that angry. I think something like that takes a bit of time to build up. But...if you really want me to...Dung Face." His smirk was mostly playful remembering back out into the field where his anger about the world had boiled over on to L'thor and equally returned. What a sight!
"Ooh! I would love to see Raith again!" he grinned. "And your weyr too! I bet it's much nicer than the dorms."

Nehren took his time as they walked to memorise the way to the candidates brackets but really it was easy from the weyr bowl to find your way you just had to member which hole in the rock to enter, it was the inside he guessed would be much harder to navigate. And he was right, inside was like a complete maze and he had to stick close to Conomor but he was glad to see that the tunnels were less crowded than he had expected, probably because it was drawing close to lunch, which reminded him he hadn’t eaten all day and for a moment he rested his hand on his stomach but he didn’t really feel the hunger pangs that he should, just butterflies.
“huh? Oh…” he faltered to be honest he had only been half listening to the other candidate and now his brain rushed to process the question and make sense of what he had been hearing. He flushed lightly which always made his freckles stand out all the more clearly. Shards and wherry teeth! He wasn’t used to this.
“I came from a small costal holding, mainly fishing with a few farms. We were to small even to have a name really but we report to Keroon hold.” he explained, Yes and now that he thought about it part of what they had given over was free and most likely came to this weyr itself as part of the tithe although after it was paid the lord holder was left to divide up what should be sent. He knew his father always sent a decent take of their catch, wanting to maintain good relations with their main hold and he had to wonder how much of that actually came to the weyr and how much went to the holders own plate.
“My father was a Fishermen like my oldest brother, but my other brother is a journeyman Harper so I don’t see him so much anymore.” he explained smoothly, just talking because it seemed the right thing to do even if his voice was all put a monotone not letting the emotions any of the words caused him to slip from behind the carefully constructed defensive mask. He smiled softly up at Con. “So what is Weyr life like? Do you help the riders with their dragons at all?” he asked, because that would make living here a certain privilege
But he fell silent again as he noticed more teenagers of similar turns more commonly passing them. Mostly in groups of twos and threes talking amongst themselves, but a sure sign they were getting close to the candidates brackets.

L'thor laughed, a wide grin spreading across his face and his grey eyes lighting up with mirth. "A title well earned!" he exclaimed, resisting the urge to embrace the young man; he really had no idea what Veyes would make of physical contact, especially given his history. "Anyway! Let's go and find Raith then," he said with a nod, turning away from the crack and setting off towards his weyr. "I won't be so very busy anymore with luck," he went on with a nod, "I've caught up with everything I needed to do so life should be returning to normal for me, and when my life is normal I always seem to have more time than I can fill each day."
Friends caught up with, foes got even with, mending done, body fit, Raith fit come to that... Yes. Life could get back to normal at last, and he'd have new things to do!... Perhaps new people to associate with would be a more appropriate phrase. Veyes and Nehren were hardly new things to do. Nehren at least was very much too young for a start.
"How have you been settling in?" L'thor asked as they walked on together. "Also... you're damp. Bath in the middle of the day? Messy chores?" He could see Veyes getting lumped with the ones most people tried to whine their way out of. He was the sort who just got on with it, uncomplaining.
*****
Ah! Fishing! He hadn't met anyone who did that yet. He'd have to try to wangle more details later, but it seemed like time for him to do some talking for now. "Life here is good," he said with a nod, "busy as anywhere else but good. The chores we do here are mostly related to cooking, cleaning, getting tithed goods sorted. We've a few people in residence who craft things, tailors and such, and a few small kitchen garden areas but other than that we use rather than make." He gathered from others that such a way of life was a strange idea to Holders who spent their days making things, growing crops and raising beasts. And catching fish of course.
"If you know riders, they'll quite often ask for help with bathing their dragons," he went on with a nod and a smile. "Some prefer to do it all themselves, but many appreciate the help. Even a green is a lot of work to keep clean. I know that L'thor is one of those happy to have help so chances are he'll ask you at some point especially if you show an interest. If you're keen on helping with dragons I can introduce you to my blood parents too; both are riders, and very happy to get a bit of help with scrubbing their mounts." He'd made that offer to one or two other Candidates, but as yet nobody had taken him up on it. Perhaps Nehren wouldn't at first at least either; meeting new people didn't seem to be top of his to-do list at all.

Nehren nodded. “I can do that.” he said confidently, it didn’t sound all that different from his old life bit he guessed that the same chores were bound to appear anywhere he went after all what dwelling didn’t need a cook and a cleaner, even craft halls required them and holds always had drudges to run around to do the manual labours. At least he had not been reduced to that and never would be but not living by his own hands work was a strange concept after all it was not usual that he would help catch his dinner out in the boat or help raise it on the farms.
Ren blinked at the offer…well he hadn’t been expecting that and for a moment it caught him at a loss for words, but really any chance to see another dragon close up should be welcomed surly. It would help him learn more, increase his chances to impress. Still it would mean more people…more crowd and intro…no! he mentally shook himself. He had to stop thinking like that here or he would never get his chance to be a dragon rider and the dragon riders surely had to be able to get along.
“Ohhh…well If you sure they wouldn’t mind I’d like to meet them and their dragons.” he told him even as they passed through to the candidates brackets and Ren was stopped short looking down at the rows of beds, all packed into the single room. He would have to sleep with all these other people?! He really would have to shake himself of his old thinking if he was ever going to get used to this, sure he had shared a room with his brother back home but this was a different scale all together. He swallowed and wet his lips slowly, he couldn’t even see a spare bunk at first.
At least what Conomor said was true there wern't many other candidates around at the moment and it made the room seem all the bigger and more imposing for it.

Veyes laughed along with L'thor; it had become rather a funny joke between them...that awful first meeting. It made each meeting together just a bit more warm. He had to thing that years from now he'd still have fond feelings for the man; but probably a much deeper memory of what he did for his family.
Either way though, he couldn't get into such deep thoughts. L'thor had mentioned things that sounded new and exciting. Seeing where L'thor lived being first and foremost on that list It had to be better than the dorms! "I'm glad you're getting back into shape and into the swing of things after the last few sevendays. It's good to hear that you and Raith are doing well. So do they have you on Search duty? Or other things too?"
He followed L'thor down the hall walking by his side content to let L'thor guide him through the various halls towards his weyr. "Oh...umm...I've been doing ok. Haven't really met many other candidates but Con and I seemed to bump into each other and hit it off. He seems like a serious but good guy."
The first day might have been rougher had he not be placed in to an assignment he already understood. He couldn't have imagined getting stuck with Laundry duty all day or maybe even dish washing, " I've been assigned to the meat locker because...well I know how to butcher. So, yeah...a messy job. Just like home in that regard; its not worth bathing first off if you're going to be covered in herdbeast first thing."
As they turned a corner, he ran his fingers through his damp hair, "Con helped me today in the meat locker because he wants to learn how to do that stuff for a hatchling one day. He wasn't too bad at it once I taught him some of the basics. I think I will be ok with taking care of Hatchling hungers." With that he grinned, "Although, I gotta remember to make sure I wash up before I feed a hatchling or I might become the dinner."

Conomor smiled sympathetically; he had never been too impressed with the sleeping arrangements Candidates had to endure either. "Any bunk that has an open chest by it is free," he said with a nod. "Looks like there's a few over there by the wall that aren't taken." he'd always preferred a wall or corner spot himself; it gave some semblance of privacy at least.
"I'm sure they'd be happy for your help whenever you're free to give it," he went on with a slight nod, reaching up to stroke Gilden absentmindedly. "They're on different wings, so they're free at different times; you very seldom get both of them together."
The pair were good friends, which he was glad of, but they only really had time to spend together at meals and late in the evening when everything was done for the day. There was less time even than that for him to see either of them; their evening meetings tended to be with parties of friends, with whom he had nothing in common, and indeed whom probably wouldn't welcome a sixteen turn old hanging around them. Meal times, especially while he was a Candidate, and snatched times to help them with their dragons was all he got. Still, that was how it had always been and he hardly regretted it; it was more than most weyrbrats got with their blood parents and besides, while he liked them he hardly wanted to be around them all the time.
*****
L'thor smiled and nodded, glad that Veyes was getting on with at least one person. He found Conomor rather too... well, yes, serious for his own tastes in friends but he had nothing against the boy. "Sounds like a very serious chap if he willingly takes on extra chores, especially ones that seem distasteful to those unused to them," L'thor chuckled. "Still dedication is a good thing; the candidate master and others notice, count on it. Seems you and he are setting yourselves up with favorable records already!" That would stand them in good sted if they ended up with dragons that could achieve rank. Browns for preference, but if Veyes got a bronze then he would be more than willing to make an exception in his usual rule that the big males were nothing but trouble and pomposity wrapped in a big shiny skin.
"I wasn't actually on Search duty when I found you or Nehren," L'thor said after a moment with a smile. "Raith just happened to pick you two out while we were flying over... I expect after bringing in two of you so close together they might start sending me searching," he went on with a slight frown. "Just so long as they don't expect me to be as enthused about the ones I'm ordered to go find," L'thor said, frown shifting back to a grin. "After all, I can only have so many favorites!" Yes. He'd fly off an hunt if ordered, but he wouldn't dedicate himself to any he found as he planned to with Veyes and Nehren. Duty was one thing, but lucky finds were quite another.
"Here we are," L'thor said as they reached the top of a narrow flight of stairs and came out into a sizable cavern, "my weyr." It was a lovely place to live, he considered as he looked about at his home; he was so familiar with it he seldom really noticed it these days. There was space enough to hold small parties, and a stunning eastward view out over the bowl. You could sit out on the ledge with a hot mug of klah and watch the sun rise. Beautiful. Then there was the little hearth over by V'kain's bed, which meant they could make their own hot drinks rather than having to go down to the kitchens every time they wanted something.
The crowing glory however, was; "Bathing room in there," L'thor said with a nod to the small but very serviceable room. Since V'kain had moved in with him, they had installed a beaded curtain over the entrance to the room, but nobody was currently in there it was drawn back allowing a view in at the bathing pool and the large stone basin that made life for the residence of this weyr really very comfortable indeed.

"Yes, Con is a very serious person. I was surprised when he wanted to come with me. I don't think most would have." Veyes was now back to his normal self at least that happier person that L'thor got to know. He wasn't nearly as quiet and could be a chatter box when into the conversation. "I think he's as dedicated as I am." He smiled a bit proud about that fact.
"Oh..so another lucky find? Mmmm...Nehren seems like a quiet sort but looked good natured so I hope he does well at the hatching because you found him." He smirked just a little at L'thor's frown. "So I am special. Thank you. I like that." Maybe he actually liked that a little more than he would admit because the man certainly done so much for him; well beyond that he found L'thor attractive as well but that was something that he tried to not let overwhelm him considering lately he'd been noticing others a bit more than before. Could it be that it was just because he was around more people?
As they reached L'thor's weyr, he could feel a sense of excitement building. How did Riders live? A question he was about to answer once they entered the cavern. His eyes widened as his head turned taking in the view, "Wow! all this?! Is yours???"
"Oh wow! L'thor this place is GREAT!" he said with an exuberant smile as he peered into the bathroom. "You're so Lucky! You don't have to bath with the rest of the candidates!" He could only imagine what it would be like to live in such a place and hoped that maybe one day he'd be lucky enough to find out. "I can't say I'm not envious. After sleeping around all the people who snore in the dorm. Where does Raith stay... in here?"

L'thor beamed; he couldn't help but love it when people he liked approved of him or things that were his. "Mine and V'kain's," he qualified with a nod. "Crowding wasn't near so bad eight or so turns ago, but D'los and I were still very lucky to get this place. Perhaps," he grinned, "the headwoman, who was sorting out which graduating weyrlings got which weyrs, heard that we two had been most dedicated to our duties... Even if I did have a nasty tendency to talk back. Do have a nasty tendency even." They'd been delighted with the place, and envied by pretty well their whole class. It had made for good parties though, and thus plenty of casual friends over the turns.
"That's Raith's couch there," he went on, indicating a raised section of stone covered with sand near the exit to the ledge. "Xerrineth takes the other... Raith says she is just coming in now," he added, "she went down to the lake for a drink..." He remembered bathing with other candidates, and then other weyrlings. He was incurably vain, so he hadn't minded the privacy aspect, but he'd hated not having control over how clean the facilities were. Even a lot of adult riders had to use communal facilities, and thinking about that he was more grateful for this place than ever. He couldn't imagine having survived this long having to pick his way around the mess other men left.
Struck by a thought, L'thor turned back to Veyes with another broad smile. "I can't do anything about the sleeping arrangements, but if you'd rather bathe up here than down in the communal pools you're quite welcome. It's a bit of a step from where your chores and the dorm are, but if you feel the privacy outweighs the convenience of somewhere closer do feel free. If you pull the bead curtain across the only people who might burst in on you are Dusk and River." Still sitting on L'thor's shoulder, River trilled at the thoughts of water and washing running through his human's mind. He did like a good wash! Didn't Dusk? A sleepy squeak from the center of L'thor's sizable bed confirmed that Dusk did enjoy a bath, but was currently enjoying sleeping thanks so much.

"Oh...so what sort of dragon does your roommate have?" he glanced around trying to figure out who's touch had decorated the place. "Ha! You're lucky to have this place then, she probably didn't hear about your attitude problems or you might have ended up in a tin can with Raith sitting on you for a couch." He giggled as the imaginative thought formed in his head - one big dragon perched on an itty bitty L'thor.
It took him a moment to stop his bubbling laugh that just threatened at the edge of a giggle fit. However, once L'thor showed him Raith's "couch" he caught his breath and smiled. "Looks like it would be really comfortable...for a dragon."
"Oh...I'll live...except for the snoring at night. I really want to shove socks in a few mouths down there." he exclaimed with a frustrated frown but then it brightened once more with the offer of a private bath. He practically bounce with giddiness"REALLY?? Oooh....that would be worth the walk! Umm...but will your roommate mind?"

L'thor didn't respond immediately. Instead, he turned back to the ledge and smiled as Raith alighted and then lay down placidly in the midday sun. She was a glorious creature. "He has a brown, lovely dark coloured hide," L'thor said after a few moments, turning his attention back to Veyes as River fluttered over to say hello to Raith. "Kain won't mind at all," he said with a smile and a slight shake of his head. "Very easygoing man. Anyone living with me would have to be though," he added with a chuckle.
"I'll see we have an extra towel or two lying around then," he went on with a thoughtful frown. "Extra towel... we always have plenty of soapsand, oil too if you get dry skin." That sounded like about everything Veyes would need; if it was about everything a vain, primping creature like him needed then no doubt his young friend would do just fine. Oh, there was the shaving soap too, but it didn't look as though Veyes needed to worry about that very often if at all as yet.
"He's welcome to come over and make a fuss of me whenever he comes up for a bath," Raith put in to L'thor, her mental voice carrying more than a little hopefulness.
The slim rider laughed and crossed the weyr to step out into the sun and rub his dragon's eyeridges. "Oh you. You'll take any excuse to get a bit of attention, won't you?" he said fondly. "Raith says that when you come up to wash, she'd like you to fuss over her for a while if she happens to be around," L'thor grinned, turning back in Veyes' direction. "She really is an attention seeker."
"And?" the green said to her rider, turning whirling blue eyes down on him. "You know I'm worth every moment of it."
