I would say oboe. I'm a clarinet player, and I can hold my air very well, but when I tried oboe I nearly died lol. Also, pretty much any brass instrument requires tons of air, but I think it's something everyone gets used to. However, oboe is at the top of my list.

we have an oboe player in our class who played clarinet for one year, sucked at it, and now hes playing oboe, and, you can hear every squeak in our vids/cds

I'd probably say flute and tuba.
x3
I say this because I can hold a note on my flute for about 10 seconds at the very most.
I tried my sister's clarient once for the hell of it; note was held for about 20 seconds.
As for the tuba part?
Well, it's a huge instrumment.
>____>;
Needs mucho air, while the only reason a flute needs so much is the fact that it seems at least half my air doesn't even enter the instrument.

Flute and tuba.

Fun fact: Only 1/3 of air blown while playing flute actually goes into the flute.

Ok IDK why but the flute takes as much air as a tuba. Weird huh? Well my instructor told us about a (think it's called base...) flute. The "base" flute is way longer and bigger around. Well if it takes as much air to use flute as it does tuba, than think of that thing!! AHH!! Well That is the most air. If not that you'll like die. My teacher was tellin us if she were to play it she'd be out of breath every other note lol. stressed So ya, try to top that lol

have you ever seen a double contrabass flute?

I dissagree completely, percussion takes the most air!
ever played a train whistle?
oh my goodness. The train whistle is soooooo hard to make a nice sound with. Although i do think that other instruments take more air.

French. Horn.

Definitely, French Horn. I switched from trumpet this year and...It's ridiculous how hard it is to play the thing! I love my horn to death, but it's very very hard to get it to play forte, especially since it isn't a bell-front instrument. Besides, Horn has 12348912130 feet of tubing. More tubing=more asphyxiation. 3nodding

I would have to say flutes.
Most of the air doesn't even go into the flute,
Therefore, we use more air to play.

I would say flute cuz i'm a brass player and i see the flutes take a lot of breaths. Plus they need a lot of air to get out those extremely high notes!

Alright...I'm an instrumental music education major and this happens to be one of the last things we talked about before the semester ended. The oboe actually takes more AIR to play because of the small hole on the double reed. The french horn and tuba are about tied for the most AIR SUPPORT, meaning you have to push the air through faster, but MORE AIR means the actual volume of air used. Oboe takes the most air to produce a good sound, english horn second, flute third.

Flute has the LEAST resistance of any instrument (since you're literally not blowing into anything, rather over something). Thus, it requires a gargantuan amount of air to produce a tone for a period of time. Tuba on the other hand has resistance but requires more air to sound. You generally need large and powerful lungs for either instrument.

I play clarinet, oboe and alto sax. Ive played on a few other instruments but those are my main ones. Id have to say Oboe def. takes so much more air. When I first started learing to play it I thought itd be simple since it kinda looked like a clarinet and I was good at clarinet....WRONG! Oboe about killed me, I use to almost blackout and/or get major headaches from not breathing correctly. Its very difficult and requires so much air, that i didnt think it would be possible. Ive noticed that since Ive been playing though that my diaphram (spel?) has increased and playing other instruments has become a lot easier. So my bet is on OBOE
