I'm more so of the mind that steam enhanced machinations with magical elements can work wonders. Also it adds the Applied Phlebotonium aspect.

If it ever came down to it though, I'd pick magic. For one reason alone, to qoute Luke Crane:

"There are limits to how destructive technology can be, however it just takes one wayward apprentice to "kaboom the world"."

but wouldent that be a bad thing? To let such power be available to just anyone?
I'd say that putting limits on power, or even THINKING of anything outside of a anarchist view-point, defeats the "punk" in steampunk.

though ironically Steampunk has nothing to do with Punk

Hm, but I'm thinking "punk" in the cyberpunk sense; the home made and the modified.

But your point could still be argued, much steampunk is trending AWAY from home-made.

Aww, that's what makes steampunk special. Having to rummage until you find crap that will make a masterpiece.

See now, that's the worst part; even THAT has two meanings(or I may be nit-picking).

-the fashion is less home-made, and is becoming more mainstream(read:"hot-topic")
-the literature is no longer about any "rebellion" or self-sufficiency.

While the second fact isn't necessarily a bad thing at all, the first is freaking depressing!

I must say I'm rather dissapointed with most watches. If they are "quartz" brand they just have this tiny little set of mechanics, just enough to make the arms move. dosent even have gears.

yea, Hot Topic needs to be burned to the ground. Its killing every ounce of individuality in our culture.

As for the literature, I prefer the classics, like Jules Vern

A) /hug Yay! A Verne Steampunker! Do you have siblings we can convert too?!
B) >_> I wouldn't MIND HotTopic if they could pick a genre and stick to it. I literally heard them playing country, voluntarily mind you, last time I was there. And they had NO Zeromancer Cd's and only one VNV Nation(both predictably goth bands I'd really expected to find. And no Orgy. Or Cure. I mean JESUS). I thought it was "all about the music", I guess I was wrong.

A) Yay! And sadly no, I don't. XD

B) Its not all about the music, thats just the façade they put up to appeal to the target groups (goths and emos mainly). Its all about money and cashing in on trends. Did you know Hot Topic actually sends out people to "spy" on other shops? Like if your a true goth and you have an online shop centered around individuality, in 9 months you might find one of your "one of a kind" items on Hot Topic shelves.

Yeah... I hate that they control the sub-culture fashion so effectively! I can not STAND those skin-tight leopard print pants, and the only place I've seen them is in Hot-Topic. So the act that all the emo's in town wear them is ENTIRELY HT's fault, in my mind.

Sidenote; I became "goth" because I wanted to; I like black. I thought goths were supposed to be accepting and "creative" and all that stuff. but if I'm not wearing the "in" jeans, I'm sneered at by other goth kids. I thought cliques and fashion-trends were to make us and "in-crowd" so we'd just have to sneer at other SEPARATE cliques! (and I am getting really tired of having to shoot down ever teenager silly enough to open her mouth near me. Advice; don't ridicule the scary-goths with spikes. They are functional, and hard to clean)

damn, they have no clue what true goth is, And I agree this is all HT's fault.

Goth is about individuality and expressing yourself how YOU want. What you described sounds like preps with goth clothes. Thats one reason I decided to not associate myself with goth anymore. Because the word goth has no meaning now. Its just another conformist subculture now. I salute the true goths out there who don't buy into that crap.

I really don't know how others would pigeon-hole me. I just like black, spikes, fishnet, and playing with eyeliner. And after getting out of high-school and just dressing utilitarian for a while, I decided to go back. I feel more comfortable with the shitkikkin boots and a mini-skirt.

See, now for me, the want to kill my fellow man predated the fishnets by years. But I digress.

I've never gotten any weird looks EXCEPT from other "goths" and emo's and whatnot. I smile at a grandma and they always smile back. And when they don't I flip them off, but again; DIGRESSION. I never got the Satan-worshiper thing. I did once get the "Godless pagan whore" thing, but it was true; I have a family god for chrissakes.
