She winced back when he got angry, and she drooped her head a bit. "But this is the only place I know. Caves are cold and lonely."

"I don't live in a cave," said Trickery. "I live in our herd grove. We all used to live in mansion but... long story."

"Okay." Trickery sat down. "Once upon a time there was a beautiful princess. Her father was the Goblin King and he was a tyrant of his kingdom, the Labyrinth. The princess was a beautiful and kind soul who too after her mother, the only thing she had of her father was his affinity with magic. She met a handsome young knight called Kaiba, and though he was very naive, he grew to love her and she him. The father hated that he was losing his daughter to the likes of Kaiba, who was not even a prince, but a white knight only. He put Kaiba through many tests to endure and endure he did. Then, the princess became pregnant and Kaiba was blessed wih three sons and three daughters. One was fostered to the King, two to the princess, and Kaiba kept the eldest twins and the youngest son.
"Though not all things were meant to last. Kaiba built a great mansion as a momument for his love for the princess, alas though, she never saw it. She did not see him, and her father poisoned her mind and the minds of the children against Knight Kaiba and he never saw them again. He moved his family out of the mansion, back into the glens of their lands, but the demons and evil ponies of the herd took up residence at that place of heartache and misery, while the walls crumbled and the metals tarnished and the garden overgrew, and Kaiba turned his face away from his pain and saw instead his two beautiful daughters and his son who was like a carbon clone of the evil king."

"Whoa!" she whispered, wide eyed, as she settled in to hear the story. "was the son like his grandpa past the skin too? did the princess and the knight ever meet again? If she was a princess and she married, doesn't that make him a prince? and if he's a prince, why can't they be married?"

Trickery stretched. "They didn't marry, young one. They were going to, but the evil king wouldn't have it. The three children the knight kept, the eldest daughter, her twin sister and the youngest son, were just like little ones of the adults. The eldest, Kane, was a girl form of the Knight, only in black. The twin, Eerinna, was as beautiful and shy and lovelyas her mother. And Gamell, the youngest, was a cold trickster who actually took after both the King and the knight. He was smart like the Knight, but he had the sick ense of humour as the king but he enjoyed games very much, a trait of both his forebears."
Trickery laid a hoof on Andromeda's head. "No, my dear. They never met again. The King would not allow it and the Knight's heart was too broken to see her."

Trickery smiled. "You're still a little girl, Andromeda. You'll understand someday." He stood up. "You know, if you would like to, and I insist, you should come and stay with my herd. The children would love to have you. You might just need to choose a shorter name. Not all of them will be able to say 'Andromeda'."

"Exactly like that," said Trickery. "Except you won't be playing with just me, but all my family if you like. Little boys and girls your age, and lots of ponies like me with very good stories."

Trickey's mouth twisted in concern. "I'm not letting you sleep here, in the wet and cold. Here, climb up and I'll carry you and you can have a hot chocolate when we get home."

Trickery nodded. "Yeah. It's very very bad for you to sleep out in the wet. You nose runs like it's crying and you feel hot all the time and you haven't got the enrgy to play."
