"You could have just thrown the knife back at her..." A blink and then topic change back to the flotation thing. "I'll see what Doc Cox has to say about that...Maybe he'll make them nice and bright. I'm thinking neon pink. Eh? "

Talon blinked as Kelly went off and examined a bolder. This would end in a cave in, an earthquake, some freak rainstorm, triumph, tears... Lots of things. Oh? So the plan was to roll a large bolder down the side of the cliff...possibly causing a cave in, to get a ramp down there? "Well...if you say so. And avalanchevator is a technical term now? " Did he help? Course he did! Its no use letting the crazy man do all the work when there was a possibility of shiny goodness to hoard!

That would be mean and freeloader-like. Especially towards someone that is quite known for carrying firearms. Que cera...

The Zoid dug its toes into the dirt, putting a good deal of power towards pushing the bolder into the ravine. And hell...Yes, he would jump back. Getting caught up in the 'avalanchevator' wouldn't be too kind to the Zoid. Not to mention it would hurt to have that happen. Then again... Shinies....

Kelly threw Black Knight's considerable strength into the effort, hardened alloy claws squealing and grating as they tore into the rocks under his feet, servomotors whining in protest at the forces involved. With slow, ponderous grace, the huge rock tilted off it's axis, beginning a slow roll toward the chasm. "That's it, fire in the hole!" He spun and ran away from the edge, sprinting a few hundred meters, then turning to watch as the boulder slowly ground its way over the side of the cliff. It seemed to almost hover for a moment, then vanished over the edge with a grating rumble. A few seconds later there was a mighty crash, then another, and another as the boulder bounced back and forth between the canyon walls like a giant wrecking ball in its plunge to the bottom. Dust and dirt rattled from the far wall on the first blow, the second bringing some loose rocks and larger chunks peeling away from the plateau.

"Come on, come on, you can't be THAT sturdy..." There was a third, grating crash as the boulder hit bottom, and the canyon seemed to shimmer with vibration from the impact against the base of the far wall. There was a moment of silence, then a vast, booming roar as chunk of the far wall the size of a good-sized house broke loose, tumbling downward into the canyon. It plowed into the near wall, causing a sympathetic collapse, and in an instant, fully a hundred meters of the plateau vanished, riding the avalanchevator into the canyon below. A great cloud of dust billowed into the air as rubble spilled out in a great vee below, blanketing the floor of the canyon in broken rock for hundreds of meters in both directions.

"Woohoo! Now THAT is what I call making a big entrance right there!"

". . . And we've just caused a huge upset in the habitat of the desert." said Talon as he finally turned from the sprint away from the edge to watch the cloud of rubble form. He winced as the bolder hit the solid rock of the ravine bottom. Explosions and earthquakes weren't near his favorite things.

Slowly, once the rubble settled and Talon was sure that nothing would happen randomly, he edged his Zoid. He peered at the damage, sighed and shook his head. " If the barracks flood for any reason at all, I'm blaming you. ...Though, it does litter the bottom in an oddly appealing way... And its not really an entrance. You didn't dive in to appear as the dust settles. Its merely an opening ceremony to the entrance."

Talon took a gander at the mock roadways constructed. They didn't look all to stable, then again, they were just created and were kinda getting to terms with their sudden and cataclysmic existence. " Well, if we didn't destroy that magnetic thingy... I say, you first. "

"Well, if I thought there was anything down there to witness it aside from scorpions and assorted reptiles, I might have put a bit more work into the dramatic nature, I suppose." Kelly walked over to the side, looking down. "Hmm, that should do it, looks like only about a thirty foot drop to the top of the rubble, that's well within specs, shouldn't be a problem at all."

"Now that's the mercenary spirit right there, Talon. Keep that outlook, and you might end up doing quite well. Remember, there's a couple of really basic rules to merc-work. First rule is to get paid. That means you do your job, and don't hose up. Second rule is to live to SPEND that pay. That also means not to hose up. It can also mean letting the other guy go first." He laughed and jumped over the side, landing with a clattering crash on the still-loose pile of rubble below, using Black Knight's claws to dig into the shifting pile and maintain his balance. "Careful, it's a bit loose, but seems stable enough. Just make sure you walk down the side in a different spot from me, it's impolite to kick debris on your buddy's nice, shiny Zoid."

This was some adventure. Go for a scout, blow up a canyon, and now go down into it and explore some sort of thing found on radar that could be nothing more than a Sleeper or just a stash of goodies. "Reptiles and insects have feelings too, you know."

The rubble wasn't too far down. The idea of jumping on top of the unsettled rubble wasn't appealing. But then again, it was better than waiting for nature to build that perfect ramp. Half listening to Kelly's ramble, Talon moved the Tyrant to the opposite side of the slide only on principle that the rocks would be a bit stabler there.

"Yeah, yeah. Common sense says don't do stupid things. Not getting paid and dying don't fall under common sense. " He did wait a moment before hopping to the rubble, finding that it wasn't too stable, but neither was it looser than sugar sand. Meh. An interesing blend. There was a mur uttered and an eyebrow rose, "I wouldn't dare do such a thing! I want to live, thank you very much. " Still, it was another issue of common sense. Not only would it dirty up the Zoid, but stray rocks could damage parts and possibly kick up a rock slide if too much matter was displaced at the same time.

Claws clung to the earth as the Zoid peered about a safe, quick path to the canyon floor. At a slow walk, Talon began the decent, speeding and slowing to compensate for the rubble. Messy..messy messy messy!

"Well, if there were any down there, they don't any more." Kelly chuckled, for some reason that tweaked his odd sense of humor. He crouched and leaped again, landing with a grinding crash of debries and rubble fifty or sixty feet down the slope. Before his weight could dislodge the loose rocks under him, he leaped again, barely staying in front of a the garbage that crashed down the hill from his first landing.

Riding a small collapse of scree and small boulders, he bounded down from the base of the collapsed slide and jogged a ways out onto the canyon floor to avoid any disturbed rocks from either of their descents, turning to look back and make sure Talon made it down ok.

"Well, and common sense doesn't get paid nearly as well as taking a few risks on occasion. This was a fairly calculated risk, we're still close enough to the base that they could send us some help if we really needed it, although the chances of getting into something that we can't dig out ourselves isn't ALL that great." He kept his head up and scanning as he spoke, the republic had practically littered the entire desert with their sleeper traps, and it was entirely possible that there was at least a small detachment in the area. He wasn't terribly worried, old sleeper units were no match for even their lightly-armed Raptors, but if they were caught by surprise, it could turn into a sticky situation.

"Hey Talon, keep a sharp eye out, who knows what's down here."

"It still was a dangerous idea. But meh... " Talon grumbled, finishing his slower decent to the ground floor. He took a quick glance up and down the canyon, then at the canyon walls. He'd ask how they'd get back up, but probably later once they were through with this little side quest.

The Tyrant danced in place for a bit before jogging over towards his comrade, keeping a close eye on the slope and the sky. An attack from above wouldn't be fun, neither would be getting buried in rubble. "T souls of dead scorpions and lizards are whats down here. But okay. I'll warn you when I see the hoards of their spirits charging at us and seeking vengeance. " At a walking pace, Talon moved a bit forward towards where they had spotted that magnetic spot in the canyon's wall.

"Well...how exactly are we getting back up anyways? "
PostPosted: Sun Mar 01, 2009 12:33 am

"Don't worry, if they charge you can drive them back with blasts of sarcasm. that seems to work well on irritated spirits." He grinned behind Knight's canopy, and toggled up the MAD display to his forward HUD overlay, walking down the canyon a little slower now. For getting back up, I was planning to stroll along the bottom of this lovely little gully until I found a slope shallow enough to climb, or walls close enough together to chimney. With as irregular as these canyons are, that shouldn't be too hard to find, I think.

"Hey, I have some smaller signatures buried in the sand on the canyon-facing side of the wall anomoly. Rubble, perhaps, but keep sharp, we don't want to be caught by surprise." He reached down and toggled the combat system online, watching the status indicators pop up on the HUD too, although the board was depressingly short. "We've really got to get some guns to take onto these things, this is almost sad."

"I was just going to let them have at you. But that works too. My stand up routine could use a bit of work. " A soft hiss escaped the Tyrant, having picked up on the underlying caution...that and it wasn't amused. Neither was Talon for that matter. "Sounds less dangerous... "

"Hum... " Guarded rubble, just rubble, or just guards for something or other... This was turning interesting. Annoying, but interesting. "I'll buy you duct-tape back at the Exchange for whenever you get some better guns. I'm sure you'll need it. " Talon chuckled softly, and figured it would be better for the more experienced pilot to head in first. The combat system was thrown into operation. There was a lack in any real fire power, but for the basic function of the Zoid, it wasn't too bad a display. Not that he could take on anything with remotely decent armor, fire power, or maneuverability. And definitely nothing that could fly... Siiigh.

"What? And file a complaint that will be processed years from now? Meh... I'd rather chew on rawhide for dinner. "

"Well, a bit of danger is part of life, the trick is in picking where and how much danger you get into. Being prepared is a must as well, and in this case, knowing where your opposition could be. By closing the field, we really only have two possible routes of attack, discounting air units. One of those two routes is currently blocked by a handy little landslide." He gestured forward, a motion mirrored by one of Knight's forelimbs. "Back me up, I'm going to go ahead and see what we've turned up here."

He slowly advanced down the canyon, pausing about every three steps to make another MAD sweep, slowly building a very precise composite map of the close area. "I think we've found a sleeper trap here, they either haven't detected us yet, or they're offline, I'm showing no motion yet. Closest target looks to be about three hundred meters, buried by about three. Guysaks, probably. No real threat, but let's try to be covert if we can. There's almost certainly something here if there's a sleeper trap around to protect it. Or it could just be a random ambush, of course." He shrugged. "No real way to find out without poking at it, though. What do you think? Press on and see what happens, or go over the rubble the other way and bail out?"

The lecture, though educating in its own way made Talon sigh. Oh he was listening, it was just going to get randomly remembered two days from now probably in the middle of something completely different, like doing the laundry or something mundane like that. Value and remembering never really fell together, unlike value and random recollection. He did hear the last part, as well as watching the Knight did a weird movement with its foreclaw. Did the Raptors really look that funny when they gestured? "Huh....Alright... "

With a short attention span slowly creeping up, Talon did try to resist the urge to figure someway to make his Zoid flap its arms like a bird. The idea was met with a low growl, and a sigh. He'd do that when they weren't in a canyon possibly waking up Sleepers, just to amuse and horrify the stick in-the-mud's back on Base.

The report brought him out of his half-brained attention deficit daydream. Three of them, this close to the compound? Thinking for a moment, Talon spoke up, " An ambush would have most likely happened by now, and with better Zoids than Guysaks. Odds are, out of the three, one of them is completely offline if they've been here for a while due to some sort of malfunction if they are sleepers. If you want to poke at it, go right ahead. No use bailing out now, there must be something worth our trouble down here. "

Talon wasn't looking forward to combat at all. He disliked fighting. Found it pointless and messy. Though, he did acknowledge the need for some combat to save his own hide. Especially when in a canyon and there was possibly something of high value here. Whats a few Sleepers and a few scratches to the value of something useful?

"Well then, let's see what we can stir up." Kelly looked cautiously at the area ahead, deciding exactly how he wanted to go about it, then crouched and sprinted forward, zigzagging wildly down the canyon. He ran right over the area with the possible contacts and continued down the bottom of the canyon for several hundred yards before slowing to a stop and turning around, seeing no sign of pursuit at all.

"... Well that was anticlimactic." He walked back along his claws-deep sprinting tracks, watching the MAD display to position himself right over one of the suspected sleepers, and used one foot to scrape the overburden sand away. After some minor excavation (and some profanity as the loose sand kept wanting to slide right back into the hole) he uncovered the dull brown skin of a Republic Sleeper Guysac, as expected. What he didn't expect were the heavy wrinkles in its tough alloy skin, with the glass broken completely out of the cockpit. "Well, this one looks kind of... mushed. From the amount of rocks and debris here, I wonder if they weren't fast enough to get away when one of the walls came down, that would explain how nobody had noticed this anomaly before." He gestured to the canyon wall, where a few twisted beams of definitely structural nature protruded. "Looks like we at least found something worth our time to come down here... Wonder if there's any way in?"

A blink. Another blink, and Talon just crept up until he was standing centered in the Canyon, an eyebrow arched in great amusement as the Knight zig-zagged about. A moment of confusion and then Talon started laughing. Nothing had happened. Aww...

It was a good thing, but he was hoping for something a lot more climatic like something bursting from the wall or at least something worth that effort. "At least you gave the Knight some exercise ... And made some lovely marks in the dirt. " It took effort to restrain from blurting out sarcasm at the great reveal of the broken Guysak. Even as amusing as it was, it was a bit depressing. Poor Zoid.

"Probably. Or the spring floods got to it. Neh...What? " Attention was torn from the Zoid to the wall. Structure beams? That meant either a base, or ruins... Most likely the later. No one would build a base in such a shallow canyon wall now a days unless they were up to some no good. "The entrance is probably behind the pile of rocks near the beams. Looks like it was an old earthquake or rubble from another random bolder that just happened to fall from above and jar loose ornamental sculpture that used to frame the doorway... Either way... Its probably nearby. " Definitely worthwhile. And a few spare parts too! Joy.
PostPosted: Mon Mar 02, 2009 8:48 pm

"Could be, it's mangled enough." He crouched and popped the canopy of the Black Knight, standing on the cockpit rail to inspect the pile of rocks and rubble. "Well, at least it doesn't look too heavy to get through. I'm fairly sure we can clear those if we can't find a way in without it, nothing there looks to out-mass the lifting capacity of our front grippers. I'd rather not shift anything we don't have to."

He dropped back into the cockpit and closed the canopy, standing up again and walking back away from the wall, inspecting the slope above the ruins. "We're going to want to be careful, though. Something's already come down off that slope once. It looks stable enough, but you never really know. I'm setting a locator beacon on Black Knight to give our position and a distress call if we don't come out in a couple of hours."

'It's not that its heavy. Its the issue of moving the rocks without damage to the passage and the surrounding rock that poses a problem. " Talon frowned, searching for any sort of weakness in the holding structure. It looked like it would hold... after all, it held for that crash of the bolder...probably could hold for another blast and be fine. Probably.

A nod and a grumble. No one said it would be easy to get at the prize. "Good... I don't want to get trapped in there or trapped under rubble without hope of rescue. I didn't pack a lunch. " Even so, he took one last look up at the slope and frowned. It looked to be down to the bedrock...Looked. Didn't mean it was.

A sigh escaped and Talon eased the Tyrant closer to the wall, front claws carefully clearing away the larger rocks first, always glancing back up at the wall to make sure it wasn't tumbling down upon him. Later he'd probably go through the rubble by hand to see if there was any carvings on the rock that the grippers hadn't destroyed. Not a good process, but clearing it was the priority. It wasn't like he was an archeologist or something like that.
