I believe Israel has lost 5 soldiers right now, but that is not the amount of deaths accurately. In 2005, Israel pulled every Jew out of Gaza in attempt for peace. Soon later Hamas was elected, and started sending multitudes of rockets daily, and put many civilian lives at risk. Every state has an obligation to protect its citizens. Not only that, but Hamas is killing Arabs as well. He is using women and children as human shields, and teaching young children to hate and kill. He also used the children to build the tunnel which he uses to smuggle his weapons.

I would recommend watching some of the following links. I will say that they are all from Israel's side but they really show what is going on. If you have something supporting the other side, or against this, I'll be open to hearing different views.

we have a cease fire...

GAZA CITY, Gaza (AP) — Israel said Wednesday that it "welcomes" an Egyptian-French ceasefire proposal for Gaza as long as such a deal guarantees a halt to militant rockets and weapons smuggling, in a possible sign that a bloody 12-day offensive could be winding down.

French President Nicolas Sarkozy said in Paris that both Israel and the moderate Palestinian leadership in charge of the West Bank had accepted the truce proposal, but Israeli officials did not confirm that. Hamas, for its part, said it would only support a deal if it included an opening of Gaza's borders.

Lets see if this goes beyond a day.

There's a lad I know who walked up to me today and called Israel "bloody tyrants" . I tried explaining, but he still thinks Israel is a bully that should be invaded by UN peacekepping troops...

yeah...

And what exactly will sending peacekeepers to Israel accomplish?

That's like entering in a dog fight with a pit bull with no teeth.

As a matter of interest, does anyone here actually believe Israel will achieve its goal for completely stopping Hamas rocket fire? Call me a cynic, but I think they have just as good a chance at stopping Hamas AK-47's as they do rockets.

Well the cease fire is already over.

They took a break to let fuel and food into Gaza and to drop leaflets that said in no uncertain terms.

"GET OUT NOW"

and then the war continued.

I don't think Israel gives a damn what the neighbors think anymore.

So what happens if this continues past a month and the UN starts getting a little more edgy?

Same thing they did with Rwanda

write a strongly worded letter, and see if the threats of resolutions condemning the action with no punitive measure do anything.

Maybe in a another decade they will let Turkey send troops into Gaza.

Can't we all agree that the goal here is to get Hamas out of power? I know for a fact that the nation of Israel holds some of the keenest minds of our generation, and yet we can't think of a way to make this happen without missiles and various other forms of weaponry. Please don't get me wrong and think I'm placing all the blame on Israel, but it's as if they've taken to a foreign policy that consists of "An eye for an eye". It seems totally inappropriate to bring up Ghandi, but I think we're all familiar to what that specific phrase leads to.

I think we spend entirely too much time discussing arsenal and not enough time discussing actual solutions. One of the reasons terrorist organizations have so much appeal is because of the social and civil work they do. It's apparent that what the people of Palestine want is infrastructure and a government who isn't afraid to stand up to Israel when they shave more and more land off of Gaza and the West Bank for "security". Fatah couldn't do this, after Yasser Arafat died I think people of the Middle East saw the party go from "respectable" (in an Islamic sense of the word) to tainted. I think that perhaps the new split in the Fatah party is Palestine's answer. At least then we wouldn't have to share borders where every nation is run by Islamic extremists and then we could come closer to peace talks.

Yes, that would mean Israel would have to open up and allow things that might not make every Zionist 100% happy, but so what? These wars don't make anyone happy, they just continue to stoke a fire that could become explosive. And these wars don't make people want to side with Israel. It's like the kid Behatz mentioned, people only want to demonize Israel and root for Gaza because of this BULLSHIT which essentially just strengthens Hamas's choke hold. G-d willing we can figure something out sooner rather than later and with the least amount of collateral.

One thing though Kingpin.

Hamas' home office is in Syria, not Palestine.

Their party was voted into office, under the express platform of "we wish to have our representatives in power in Gaza and the West Bank simply to ******** s**t up"

We're do you think those 10,000 Katusha rockets they fired across the border came from?

They wanted to remove Hamas from power, they allowed the Palestinians to vote.

They chose poorly.

The Palestinians chose poorly? I don't see what you're getting at.

Palestine, that area known as The West Bank and Gaza, once was occupied and controlled by Israel. Palestinians disputed their occupation and demanded self rule.

Israel allowed self rule in that "Land for Peace" deal that pissed off the Israelis so much, that an Israeli killed the Prime Minister.

One of the conditions was that the Palestinians had to have free elections.

So they did, and Hamas swept the elections beating Fatah in most of the parliamentary seats. Taking control of the country of Palestine.

What's the difference between Hamas and Fatah.

Fatah might be Yassir Arafat's PLO party, but they're not regarded as terrorists by the Israelis. They were the moderates compared to Hamas.

The Palestinians chose poorly. They elected their leaders who decided to put their democratic feet, into the democratic fire.
