"I had heard some of the rumors going around during my return Mi'lord but most hoped it was only a rumor. So it's true..."

"Indeed, it is true. Certain members of the Order believed that the Archangel was taking too strict a line with those Iron Fist followers... but a select few of them took it a step further. They enticed a small, important number of people to follow them... including the Angel of Dominion himself..." Uriel's voice took on an even greater note of sorrow at this point, conveying more disappointment than anger... though his next words left no doubt there was plenty of that hiding in the depths.

"Johannes was betrayed, Evalin... betrayed by his most trusted subordinate, the Cardinal serving as the leader of his forces. We believe that she managed to convince him that, with the help of one of the Angels, they could lend the Iron Fist the sort of divine aid they would need in their campaign... or that they would set a precedence for others of our Order to follow. Further observation of the Iron Fist has indicated that this betrayer... the Cardinal Asmyrra... has subsiquently been given a high rank in the Iron Fist."

Uriel paused, long-fingered hands closing into fists as he composed himself once more, his dark eyes opening and staring intently into Eva's, as he began to murmur once more, his voice conveying the grave level of importance he held this in. "With the leaders of the Iron Fist removed, it is believed that those following loyalty, rather than faith, will see the errors of their way, and return home... but first, we must get close enough to those leaders to strike."

"Are you still certain you are willing to devote yourself to this?"

User ImageThere was always a sense of longing...

A sharp intake of breath was the only immediate indicator as to her inward turmoil. Though her knuckles turned white as she gripped the arrow tighter and tighter, her expression remained calm. To think an Angel could be corrupted. Such a blow to be dealt at such a time. Lord Johannes, of all people, betrayed the order. These three thoughts chased each other across her mind as she struggled with this newest wave of emotions. Finally they settled somewhere in her chest leaving only a feeling of a pit in her stomache and the obvious conclusion. The reason she had been picked for this mission, the very reason she had made her arrows in the first place, was that she could dispose of any magic user who stood in the order's way. If that happened to be a formal cardinal, so be it. The Angel of Dominion, however, was another matter entirely.

"Mi'lord, I place my trust in your judgement but...I would have great reservations against drawing any weapon against an Angel."

Her voice strained on that last word, her calm mask breaking enough to show the struggle beneath. Such a thing went against all she had been taught and Eva was not sure that she could bring herself to fight Lord Johannes even under direct order. A sharp pain in her hand caused her to glance down momentarily and realize she had broken the shaft of the arrow in her hands. Small pieces of the wood had pierced the skin in both hands though none too deep. Grimacing slightly, she tucked the damaged arrow back in the quiver for later repair.

...that I never thought I'd miss.

Dark eyes were drawn down at the soft rapport of the arrow breaking in Eva's grip, the look of intensity diminishing softly as he reached his hands out, their long fingers folding about her injured hands. As her hands were enshrouded, a slow infusion of warmth began to radiate from the injuries, a hint of a glow eminating from Uriel's fingers as he raised his gaze back to Eva's.

"Fear not, Evalin... you shall not need to raise a hand to Johannes. He has only been misguided by those close to him... and with our intervention, we shall save him from the abyss waiting to engulf him. Once he is free of the spells that the heretic Asmyrra has placed him under, I have few doubts that he can be convinced to see where things began to go wrong... and to rejoin his brothers within the Order. All we need do is give him that chance... and I believe you are the key to accomplishing that."

As the final words were murmured, Uriel slowly unfolded Eva's hands, his own fingers gently brushing away the small fragments of wood, and the thin veil of blood, revealing smooth skin only marked by a small hint of pink newness on the areas where the fragments had pierced.

Once more she was surprised by his actions. Such kindness was more than life hadd led her to expect from anyone. The healing and his words acted as a balm to her spirit as her fears were silenced. It seemed that just as any person could be saved, any could be tempted. Lord Johannes was not lost afterall. She breathed a quiet sigh of relief at being able to leave the most difficult question unanswered. It was irrelevant what she would have done now anyway.

"Thank you."

She paused for a moment, struggling to put words to the conclusion she had reached. Part of her wanted to elborate on her thanks but finally she settled with the simplest answer she could think of.

"There is no higher cause then bringing salvation to the lost. I am at your disposal Lord Uriel."

She inclined her head slightly, arms falling to her sides. There was nothing else she could say beyond that though her heart yearned to thank him further. To say something, anything. The sentiment caught in her throat and hardened in her chest. She would say nothing more. What it meant to her was...she had been hurt so he healed her. It was simple logic. No need to lose your head over it. Still, her hands shook slightly and the lump remained lodged tight in her throat acting much as if it would never come loose.

...that I never thought I'd miss.

I was out gathering components when I heard the distinct sounds of battle coming from a village not all that far away. On my way back, I passed near what remained of the site of conflict. I caught a glimpse of one of their "Angels", but he was not in the customary garb. It seems he is consorting with enemy forces.

How -very- predictable..

It was only a matter of time before their fanatic ways caused a division. Not that it is any concern of mine. As long as they stay out of my way, I am quite happy to ignore the petty skuttlings of mice and men.. feathered or otherwise..

Uriel nodded briskly as he folded his hands behind him once more, the healing energies having fortunately closed the wounds his anger had caused upon his own person, as well as Eva's. "Then make yourself ready, Evalin. We shall depart after Final Bell this evening, if the gods are willing. Make sure to pack lightly, but in preparation for some large amount of traveling... I think we shall try to address my brother first, before moving deeper into the... "heart", so to speak... of the Iron Fist. If we can manage to show him the misinformation that has been pressed upon him, his departure will be a great blow to the misguided folk of the Iron Fist... and it shall make our job much easier."

Uriel then offered her a bow, slightly deeper than necessary within the Order's structure, his thin features offering a the compassionate, confidence-inspiring smile that he'd spent years perfecting. "I have faith in your ability to do what is needed, Evalin... I shall be waiting at the gatehouse leading to the western Trade Road. Until tonight...", he murmured, then glided away, vanishing into the Cathedral's depths.

User ImageOh, come now... you know as well as I that without the mice and men to watch, existence would be incredibly droll. All the knowledge in existance cannot replace the little things that make life more than a mere passage of time, and turning of pages.

Speaking of which... I am surprised that you did not venture close enough to enjoy the sparring match. The group that has come to their senses had a pair of rather intriguing people... one of which was the "Angel" you mentioned.

Hmmm... hmmhmmhmmhmm... so very amusing to see how very thoroughly Humanity falls back to some of it's most basic preconceptions about "Faith" and "Gods". This Paladin's Rod is almost a mirror of a faith they held long ago... a faith that was responsible for some of the largest numbers of their own kind murdered in the name of "God"...

I was retrieving a rather delicate series of specimens when the fight began. By the time I was finished, so were they. To be honest I didn't really pause long enough to even identify which of their Angels had gone rogue. I find little intrigue with their affairs or their rebellious heros. This beast business has proven a surprising boon for my personal interests. The creature destroys cities that long ago planted themselves upon ancient ground, preventing me from exploring their numerous delights buried beneath their shabbily crafted structures of wood and stone. Villages encroaching dangerously close to my various territories are evacuated for fear the unwholesome area will attract deadly redemption. For all rights and purposes, the last few years have been very productive.

User ImageYes, I can imagine it has been. For my part, it is, in it's own way, a very morbidly fascinating scene to watch. The rise and fall of an entire race is not a common occurrence... it usually takes much longer than Humanity on this planet existed.

In it's own way, their "Beast" has been brutally efficient... it is a pity that he has slipped into such utter savagery. There could almost be a certain.. artistic... quality to it, otherwise. But as for the remaining players... it is too bad that they are trembling so close to the brink of annihilation, just as they are rediscovering the Arts that could link them to the older, long-forgotten races of "myth"...

And it is a similar pity that you are so utterly disinterested, my dear. After all, you are -far- from capable to take this "Beast" on your own... and when he is done with Humanity, he will turn on you.

Pushing aside those thoughts, Johannes turns to Zack. “Arethos, take the boy with you when you go to gather the hunting party. Hand him over to Asmyrra and ask her to get him something to eat. I will join them as soon as I have released the prisoners.”

Zack blinked slightly and nodded bowing slightly and Johannes. "Yes sir, I shall see to it at once." He said at last sheathing his sword. He turned once more to glance at the boy trying to put a calming smile on his face. "Pete was it?" he said softly "Come along with me, I'll take you to where you can get some food."

Zack waited a few seconds to make sure the boy was following him and headed off towards where the rest of the soldiers were gathering Shadow padding along on one side of him the boy on the other. The few civilians who remained in the ruined market shied away from him staring at Shadow with nervous eyes and also staring at the symbols on Zack's armour almost as nervously. The soldiers they encountered however were long used to the wolf by now. Zack stopped one of the soldiers he was passing by, a brown haired man with silver blue eyes. This was Dameon, the second in command of Zack's squadron. He told him about the hunting party and told him to gather a few men and find an extra bow and some arrows. He then continued on his way to Asmyrra. Once there he cleared his throat slightly to get her attention and gave her a slight bow before indicating the boy. "This is Pete...Johannes commands that he be fed."

On the contrary, I am fairly confident that this Beast will not actually succeed in destroying humanity. Humans are like parasites. No matter how thorough your extermination, a few will always remain. Even when suffering under the most extreme survival conditions, humans have the uncanny ability to multiply. They breed like rabbits. No matter how much of the population the Beast decimates, humans will rise to infest the world with their civilizations once more. It is the way of things.

In the meantime, I also believe that my own survival is not in any true danger. The creature has specialized in mass destruction. I am but one individual and I stay quite neatly out of its way. There is little reason to believe that I will not be able to simply slip under the radar, as I have done thus far. Besides.. neither side is going to be able to take out this creature on their own, and they have shown no interest in joining forces. The Paladin's Rod would try to burn me on sight, and the Iron Fist is simply a military command, in which I have no place. I would think it obvious why I have chosen not to involve myself. If I allowed myself to become interested, then I might actually start to care.. and that would be terribly depressing considering I do not think either side has a chance on their own..

She watched as he disappeared, still unsure of herself though the worst of it had been silenced. Finally, she turned away from the Cathedral proper to her own corner of the world. It was not much besides a place to collapse and, on a rare occasion, to hide but it was home....sort of. As she entered, Eva immediately shed the stifling hot cloak as well as the few pieces of armor she still bothered to wear. Her bow and quiver she propped carefully against the wall but all else was thrown haphazardly to the floor. Falling back onto the sleeping pallet, she sighed suddenly then smiled. For all that it had been a disconcerting moment in time, she would never have avoided it.

Turning so that she faced the wall, she informed her subconscious rather sternly to make sure that she was awake well before she was to meet Lord Uriel at the gatehouse then promptly fell asleep. In the room was a sense of twilight and a thick silence that was rare enough to find. It was in this room that she could sleep with ease; a sleep so deep and dreamless.

//OoC: I'm going up North tomorrow morning and coming back sometime saturday noon {central time}. Just a heads up!

...that I never thought I'd miss.

After issuing the orders to help tend to the needs of all sides of the conflict, Asmyrra had drifted out of the immediate area of importance. Her soldiers knew it was not a lack of interest on her part... they knew, rather, that it was the severe depression that consumed her after such losses of life that made her withdraw. Instead, she had made her way a good distance from the battlefield, seperating herself from the memories of those moments... and becoming lost in the memories of other moments from an earlier time. Facing to the north, she seemed unmindful of the brisk wind causing her ankle-length hair to spiral out behind her like a banner, except for her hands being withdrawn into her robe's sleeves, and folded tightly to her abdomen.

As Zack approached and made his presence known, Asmyrra continued to stare to the north for a long moment, her angular features a mask of barely-concealed misery... but she was a creature of duty, and of honour. That long moment passed, and after a few blinks of slanted violet eyes, she turned to Zack and the boy beside him, the mask vanishing as a warm smile emerged, hiding her faint apprehension at the nearness of both a youngling and an animal... both whom, as her birth-mother had warned, tended to feel some kind of deep, irrational fear when near her; something about the instinctual feeling of being near a dangerous predator.

"Zen fed he shall be... I am cerrtain I could find something to satiate a young man such as you... Pete?" She offered the comment in a gently reassuring tone as she slowly extended one of her hands to the boy, those violet orbs drifting back to Zack as she murmured, "You've everryt'ing arrranged forr yourr hunterrs, yes?"

You may be right, my dear... Humanity has shown amazing tenacity on the other worlds, in other times... but here, they are alone. And as they are alone, well... alone, and with as little advancement of their sciences as they've been left with... I think I shall have to disagree. The "Beast" may have been focused on the largest centers of population in the past, but now... Now he will have to start hunting down individuals, and small bands. Most predators are invigorated by such a hunt...

And as for your own survival... the zealously religious ones have a sect within their "Order" you should be warned of. I have watched these... these "Sin-Eaters"... and they are brutally efficient at hunting down their "heretics". In fact... if the conversation I peered in on a very short time ago is true... their leader may be taking the field. I would truly be dissapointed if these little chats of ours were to come to an end...

"Sin Eaters" you say? The name is unfamiliar to me. Their leader is taking the field? Surely you are not referring to the Archangel Gabriel? Is it because one of their own has fallen to these "heretics"?

Perhaps you are right. I have been so involved in discovering the buried secrets of past civilizations that I have been utterly oblivious to the current. It is, after all, in my highest interest to know when the Angels fall. I want to be amongst the first to pick through the ruins of their cathedral once they have been ousted from their roost. I have longed to penatrate those sacred walls and everything hidden within for far too long to miss such an opportunity..
