Kaine's smile fell a bit. "She's been gone for a while now. Next door neighbor watches over my girl when I'm working." he replied.

Skuld felt a lump in her throat.

Skuld started to reach out toward Kaine.

Kaine put his hand up. "Don't be. It was a few years ago. One of the reasons I have to keep working." he replied, taking another drink.

Skuld backed off.
"Ok. I understand. It looks like we both have a lot to do, then. So, watch each other's back, to protect each other..." Skuld nods toward Kaine's daughter's picture, "and those we care for?"

Kaine nodded and finished his glass. He looked at it a moment, then down at his watch. He still needed to check in on other workers.
"So...why did you choose this? This kind of job I mean. Seems like you could find something a lot better then petty theft."

Skuld finished her drink as well, "In a perfect world, you are correct. There would be other things I could be doing. However... It isn't a perfect world, and there are others who think that your life should conform to certain molds. If one doesn't fit those preformed notions, they find themselves ostisized. Outcast. The one who doesn't fit in to narrow viewpoints."
Skuld paused to take a breath.
"I would have relished going into archeology, but I don't fit the mold. I started looking into other talents to support myself. After ignoring those who would try to 'pimp me out' and having far too much respect for myself to do such. Here I am. Ironically, in this profession I'm actually using my wits to accomplish tasks."
Skuld smiled and shrugged.
"I began to enjoy it, I guess."

Kain frowned slightly. He didn't even want to think about anything bad happening...not with his little girl without anyone else to care for.
He looked down at his empty glass a moment again, then carefully sat it down on the table. "Well, I did have other work to do before I was...hit by a car, did you say?"

"As long as there are no other surprises, yeah, I'll be fine." Kain replied. "If I'm able to walk and talk, then I need to meet with the others. If I don't, well...I'll have to try and reschedual things."

Do what's best? That would be keeping the boss happy. He needed to do his job if he was able to. And since he was, well, he shouldn't be late.
Standing, he took another quick look around, then back at her. "Well then, um, thanks. I'd better finish my job for today."

Kain knodded and headed towards the door. He opened it and walked out, but stopped in the doorway and looked back at her. "Thanks again." he said, then turned and closed the door behind him.
