The more words that came out of Deacon's mouth, the lower to the ground Riyo felt. Until she assumed herself to be an insect.

Undressing her with their eyes? Oh God. He was right. She pulled her coat closer and closer to her, and brought her legs up against her stomach. She looked like a turtle retracting back into it's shell. Felt about that way too.

It was a little hard to believe at first, though. Yuki and Neko were always so nice to her. Always smiling, and making her feel like she wasn't trash. They'd been through a lot together. And even though she appeared to be more trouble than she was worth, they always tried to convince her otherwise.

'Because they want to do you.'

The little voice in the back of her head spat at her, rather coldly she might add. "Is that really it? Are all relationships between male and female going to somehow be physical in the end? Is that all they want?" Could that really be the only thing someone desires? Is it that simple? It was something she hadn't even thought of until now. And even then, it would probably be something at the very back of her mind...

If she could ever get over the fact that it appeared as if her friendships had been built upon a superficial desire for things beyond her control.

"Yep, that's pretty much it." Deacon replied, "Why do you think Neko and Yuki are always trying so hard to impress you? You can't tell me you haven't noticed that..."

He looked up briefly from the fire to her face, wondering just how likely it was that she really hadn't realized.

Perhaps he just knew all of the tricks, being part of the gender... And one who pulled all of those tricks - and then some - on many an occasion in his lifetime. They usually worked, too. "I might be giving Yuki too much credit, though. He doesn't know a damn thing about women." He waved dismissively. "Neko, on the other hand? That one's a womanizer."

"Can't really speak for the rest of them, but if you can't trust your own species... What good are the others?" He wrinkled his nose, "Crossbreeding is disgusting, anyway." Really one to talk, when he eyeballed anything of the female gender...

Riyo's eyes widened at the sudden realization. Well, yeah... She supposed that was true... But she always shrugged it off as a general act of kindness.

Kindness...

Was it really just some cheap imitation they'd been feeding her up until now? "That... That couldn't... They..."

Then Deacon went on about how Neko was a womanizer. Riyo's ears drooped almost to the ground. Was it all fake? Was this really happening? She was just being led on so they could use her and toss her aside? What about Hitsu? And Mitsu? What about them?

'Perhaps they're being used too, Riyo.' Quietly, that all too familiar figure appeared next to her, with that all too familiar grin. Oh, he liked this guy. He liked what he did to her. It made him practically jump for joy. How utterly miserable she was right now.

'Why else would they willingly invite you into their little circle? You have nothing desirable besides that body of yours.'

Riyo's hands found their way into her hair, getting tangled in the strands as they gripped furiously. Her eyes looked like they were starting to tear up with red. Her mind was standing on a very thin strand of thread, and it could snap at any moment.

'That pretty blonde hair. Those gentle curves. They really don't compliment your insides, do they?'

"N-neko and Yuki care..." She tried to convince herself. Surely one simple act wasn't worth all she'd put them through... "A body is only worth so much struggle... They must see something more in me..."

Deacon wasn't looking at her anymore, instead carefully turning the roasting meat so that it could more evenly cook from the outside in. He was listening, however, to that unmistakable denial of hus suggestions.

Hell, he knew he might be totally mistaken, but he doubted it. That, and he didn't much care. Sick as it was, the fact that he had managed to make her mood do a complete one-eighty entertained him. He hadn't had this much fun in awhile. At least, not with all of his clothes on.

Shortly, it sounded like she was talking to herself. Or maybe she was talking to him, trying to convince him he was wrong. It would have been difficult to hide those subtle breaks in her voice, that hint that she was on the verge of tears. Deacon had heard it far too often to miss it.

When he looked up to her again, he looked serious. Perhaps that lack of amusement in his expression made his statement even worse. "You'd be surprised, some men are really stupid when they're desperate."

Snap.

There went that thin thread, and there went Riyo, somewhere into the deep chasm of her mind.

Her face went blank for a moment. Her eyes, out of focus. The hands that had been so tightly gripping her hair slowly let go.

"I guess it makes sense." Her tone had changed. Grown a little more cold.

Her pupils became thin as razors, and gave off a harsh glow. "It's not as if I haven't been through harsher circumstances. It's just been awhile. I've let my guard down."

Riyo's hands slid up her folded legs, and rested on her knees.

"It's okay. Playing dirty with unclean hands isn't difficult. If this is the way things are, then so be it. As the old motto goes, an eye for an eye, and a tooth for a tooth."

For just a moment, Deacon's brow furrowed in confusion. He sensed something different, for sure, but just as quickly seemed unconcerned. Brave wasn't the word, but he wasn't going to be a fool, either. This feline wasn't one to drop his guard.

Especially after witnessing what she was capable of.

He didn't address her at first, and merely nodded. "Think I already mentioned that you and I've got a lot in common. If you haven't realized that the world isn't worth your trust... You will."

Riyo said nothing to acknowledge his comparison of them both. Nor did she respond to his last comment. She simply stared at her hands. Her eyes gave off the sense that she was thinking. Perhaps even plotting.

"Food done yet?" She asked quietly, eyes focused on the fire instead of Deacon.

Deacon uttered a quiet 'hmph' to himself. So she was ignoring him now - or pretending to - how boring. However, he was convinced that her mind was probably processing all of the information he'd just passed along. So, sooner or later, she'd either have more questions or protest to bring up.

"If you like it red in the middle, it could be." He replied. While she refused to look at him, his gaze was locked on her when he spoke. And thereafter as he waited on a response. Perhaps to determine just what was different, perhaps to make her uneasy... "I can cut a piece off for you, if you want it now."

"Sure. That sounds good." Riyo spoke quietly and continued to stare at the fire.

It only lasted for a few seconds. The silence, that is. "Someone once told me, you are what you eat. Would that make us human?" Her eyes slowly glanced towards him, still sharp as razors.

"And moreover, wouldn't that mean that only monsters and animals were really human?"

At her confirmation, Deacon had cut away a chunk of the lightly cooked meat and offered it to her. Once she'd taken it, he cut off a piece for himself and sank his teeth into it without a moments' hesitation. He was ******** starving. These damn people and their rations... He needed more than that through the day.

Deacon could have done without the statement - and question - that Riyo spoke shortly after he'd gotten his first mouthful down. He gave a look of utter repulsion in response.

"Don't be ******** ridiculous. That's like trying to say that horses are really blades of grass."

While she'd probably intended a much deeper understanding, let alone response, she wasn't getting one from him.

"I am not one of them." He growled, ripping into his portion again as though to try and emphasize just how little he respected the race that was currently - quite literally - feeding him.

"Fair enough." Was Riyo's simple response to Deacon's obvious distaste towards the idea... Even if he had misinterpreted it.

She reached for the meat with a robotic motion. Stared at it, sniffed it, licked it, then finally shoved it in her mouth. It was good. It was delicious. It was the most satisfying bite of something she'd ever had. Not just because of the physical taste, but how they'd gained this delicacy. It was emotionally satisfying, to feast upon something you'd killed in cold blood. That wasn't to say she hadn't killed anything and eaten it before. But any animals she killed was usually just for food. Quick and painless.

This was on the opposite end of the spectrum. Riyo's smile came back, but her eyes did not change. A bit eerie...

Instead of telling him just how much she liked it, she gave a simple response. "That's pretty good."

Good enough to satisfy most of the negative thoughts she was having. Just enough that she could move on... For now.

"So... Getting back to the previous subject..." She paused, her nose wrinkling. It was obvious whatever she was thinking about was a bit unsavory. "Can all species crossbreed?" It was obvious she was getting terrible images in my mind. "And if they can... Those have to be some ugly ******** kids..."

He'd paused to watch her as she sampled the meat, it was a bit strange, but amusing none the less. When she complimented it at least, he nodded. "Surprising, isn't it? That something so filthy can have one of the best flavors."

Riyo had gone back to the subject of breeding again, Deacon shrugged lightly. "Well, I doubt I need to tell you that any species can go through the motions, as for anything coming from it... I haven't been around enough to find out if an avian and a fish can make horrible little hatchlings, if that's what you mean. There's some ******** up crossbreeding out there, I'm sure."

"The humans seem to ******** everything, though. Despite how much they hate us, the half-breeds are everywhere." He paused, "Lonely nights out in the wilderness, or some bullshit like that, I guess. Probably with several unwilling on both sides."

Riyo gave a cringe as the idea of a fish man with bird legs started walking through her head.

Then he came back to the subject of humans. It was rather obvious that he had a long-standing grudge against the whole race. What had they done to him? She'd only been around a few so far... And well, they hadn't treated her any worse than her own kin.

"There were no half-breeds in our village, no surprise there... So, as far as I can recall, I don't think I've ever met one." The way he described them, she figured they were some horrible mutants with six toes and fingernails curled under. And she sure as hell didn't think she'd seen anyone like that.

[Going to assume she doesn't know Yuki is a half breed... Because I can't remember if it's been said before, lol. D;]

Deacon gave an amused snort, "I know one. He's probably in a panic that he can't find us right now."

He glanced to her for a moment, to see if she'd wager a guess. "Yuki's father was human."

Riyo about choked on the meat she had been swallowing at that moment. Yuki... Was a half-breed? "But... Wait. What? Yuki doesn't look like a mutant..." In fact, Yuki looked no worse than anyone else in their group. And neither did Hitsu.

Wait.

He hadn't said anything about Hitsu.

Riyo's eyebrows furrowed. Maybe he just forgot. "Yuki and Hitsu are siblings... Wouldn't that make her a half-breed too?" The way he had phrased it was almost like Hitsu wasn't even in the picture. And... She didn't understand that.
