Aruka ran through the forest as a mist began to settle among the grasses. She stopped at a clearing and looked around desperately for some shelter, having forgotten where the entrance to the witch's cave was, "Oh I'm such a clutz!" Aruka groaned, throwing her hood on and running under some thickly branched trees. Aruka looked out from under her tree at the miserably pouring rain. Water was seeping into her clothes and she didn't think she'd last long under these conditions.

Witchboy...wait a second...I do know these two!!!! Marlo thought to himself, but dimissed the notion as he listen to the stout figures talk about the witch. Suddenly, as it began to rain, he realized that he was not getting wet and that it was thanks to Chalan, the water nymph he had recently been introduced to. He smiled to him and lay on the ground, called Tyr over away from Tania, and rested against his muscular body.

Sauda's tan skin seemed darker in the darkening sky from the storm just overhead. She listened to the dwarves with interest and sat on the ground, legs crossed, and then lay down and closed her eyes. She didn't sleep, but she was well rested when she awoke later. ((Which won't happen right now until people post.))

Aruka stumbled through the forest until she reached a certain point, her legs gave up from the weight of the rain and the long distance she had run. Aruka breathed a sigh of relief. SUddenly she heard a rustling and looked up to find a group of people where she had fallen, Aruka looked at them caustiously at first, then grew tired and gave up because of exhaustion, "Hello," she panted, "do you know where the nearest shelter would be?"

The group had been walking at a good pace since before dawn. It had rained hard all night, and it was still raining now. Chälan--in the lead with Sauda--was becoming, by now, more than slightly annoyed by the dwarves' constant chatter. Their tale was still going on, after nearly two hours. Their account of the meeting with Marlo in the Kythes' Forest had been only the beginning, and that had taken long enough, without even accounting for Marlo's relatively brief contributions. But, all the same, if even half the wild stories of their exploits were true, the nymph was glad to have such accomplished warriors along for the mission--especially if their information was accurate.

Chälan was brought out of his contemplation when he sensed someone approaching. A few moments later he heard it, about the same time Sauda did. Sauda beat him to warning the rest, so Chälan just concentrated on preparing himself for whatever was coming.

A young girl crashed through the underbrush, obviously exhausted, as she fell onto the wet ground. A large, white, noble-looking dog came up behind her, trying to help her up and be her guardian at the same time.

It was still raining, but beams of light were finally peeking through the limbs of trees. Behind him, Chälan heard Merin muttering, "Ow, what was that for?" Dalin answered, but the nymph couldn't make out the words. Chälan didn't turn to look, because the girl was looking up. Merin answered, "Don't you think it'll be obvious?"

"Quiet, you two, you're being silly," someone said. Chälan wasn't really listening. When he saw what she was, and recognized her from the dwarves' description the previous night, he was overcome. He could hardly tell she was a nymph anymore. Her skin had lost its true quality and was more like a human's, and she was dressed like one as well. But the gentle features, the soft tapering of her ears, the deep pools of her eyes... deep down she was still one of his kind, no matter how twisted her augmented power had become. Chälan could sense it within her, the boiling storm of conflicting magic, coursing, raging through every fiber of her being, a realm of chaos made into a breeding ground for power. Watery tears spilled down his cheeks as the knowledge smote him.

When the young girl, on the verge of unconsciousness, asked where to find shelter, Chälan stepped forward and knelt down in front of her. Her dog--the familiar the dwarves had talked about--seemed to realize that Chälan was not a threat.

"Hána hyerna dan tsindëri chenndë? Lli dhila, aladári." Chälan could hardly comprehend the harm brought by the witch upon one of his own kind, a nymph. He tenderly lifted her chin to look into her eyes, brought almost back to tears at the thought that she might not even understand his words. But when he looked into her eyes again, there was some spark of awakening. She did know, somewhere deep inside. She was not lost. He asked her name. "Hána lle äenen?"

(( If you want to speak a dialect of nymph, PM me what you want to say and I'll reply with an explained translation. =) ))

Aruka blinked and realized tears had been shed, she felt her own face and felt only rain, but the stinging tears were still there. Aruka slung her arm over Kyuuki's shoulders and, with his help, stood up. Aruka looked around at the group Could this be the doing of the witch? she thought, "...if so..." Aruka shivered at what her teacher would do when she found she had communicated with people who...didn't work with her "kind".

Aruka closed her eyes tightly, wishing it all away, but when she opened her eyes, she saw them still there. Aruka sighed, "...Aruka..." she replied, she had been barely able to comprehend the language, but it had somehow seemed familiar, "Do you speak...common?" Aruka asked, "I was taught that by...my...sister..."

Either the girl was lying, or her sister was something like her, a shadow of the nymph she truly was. In any case, this young girl was probably taken from her kind when she was too young to remember. He hated to think of any other possibilities. Perhaps the 'sister' was in fact the witch, which would explain things--but he couldn't know for sure. "Arucha," he said, softening the 'k' sound to bring it back to it's nymph roots. "My name is Chälan."

The poor girl probably didn't even know how to absorb energy from the Elements around her. At least, since she was a nymph, he could transfer some of his energy into her--enough to relieve some of the exhaustion and let her think clearly, but not so much as to allow her to do much of anything physically. "Hold still, dear one; I will giphve you a touch of strength." He called on his power, awakening the nymph girl's mind. "Naeí aladári irishan anahë."

Aruka felt strength awakening inside her, her knees stopped shaking and the rain finally let up, Kyuuki whimpered as the bushes behind Aruka shifted.

Burr crashed through the bushes and into the clearing, "Aruka what-!?" he saw the other nymph, "Who are you? Get away from Aruka!" Burr shoved Aruka behind himself and stood up straighter, feeling much less confident on the inside, "I repeat, who are you?"

Sauda and Marlo watched the language transaction in silence, wondering just what was going on. Sauda didn't understand the nypmh language clearly, some of the words sounded very lightly linked to elven, but rarely, and Marlo was busy staring at Aruka.

Aruka, shocked, grabbed Burr's arm and hauled him aside, "Burr! What are you doing here!?" but Burr just glared at the enemy nymph, looking up and around at the group, "Run, Aruka! Go get the witch, she needs you now!" Aruka gasped and, closing her eyes, repeated what the witch had taught her. Suddenly, as if it had always been there, fog started to appear. Aruka crouched down into the thick fog and became nearly invisible as she planned to make her escape, "Aruka! Aruka! ARUKAAAA!!!" Burr turned around and around, then started to claw through the fog looking for her, "Run, Burr!" Aruka whispered to him, Aruka bolted past him and the group as she tried to escape into the trees.

Chälan Urdhuna drew himself up to full height. He was not about to let a mere fog confound him and his friends. He was not so powerless as that, even so far from his home. Water, at least, was his to command--and after all, what was fog but water suspended in air?

Summoning his power once more, Chälan raised his voice in command. "Naeí Alaerra undánë!!" Water departed instantly, fleeing away from Chälan, the source of the spell. The fog disappeared, like smoke before a mighty wind. Even the rain was blasted away in a wide radius, and the forest became crystal clear, in sharp focus. For a moment the air was as dry as a desert. Then some of the water began to return because of the rain, and the extra-sharp edges of the forest's image softened to normal.

'Burr,' apparently the young half-elf the dwarves had mentioned, was dressed as a thief. It was hard to miss all those knives. Aruka was crouching a few paces away, frozen just as she was attempting an escape. "Hold!" commanded Chälan, before anything else could happen. As a nymph, with an overabundance of his Element inside him, Chälan's voice had instantly recovered from the lack of water in the air. His full power was ready, in case Burr or Aruka tried anything further. Behind him, he could feel yet-unused power emanating from Marlo, and his other companions were all tensed, ready for action. He addressed the witch's two students. "Neither oph you are ghoingh anywhere near that witsch. Not iph we haphve anythingh to say about it. We'd prepher not to phight, but iph you prophvokhe us, we'll not hold anythingh backh."

Dalin and Merin grunted in agreement and approval as they hefted their weapons. Merin's greatsword rang as it was drawn from its scabbard.

Chälan knew Aruka wouldn't be able to get far, if she did try to escape. He'd only used a little power to clear her mind, not rejuvenate her tired body. Aruka might be something approaching Chälan's match if she were rested--and she'd be at a huge advantage physically, if her garb was any indication. But the thief, even if he did know any magic, wouldn't be anything close to a match for Chälan alone, let alone everyone here. Again, Chälan spoke. "Let's jhust sit down and haphve a talkh. Just ask Arucha's phamiliar: we mean you no harm iph you mean none toward us."

Tania watched with growing interest as the scene unfolded before her. She had heard the nymph girl nearing their position long before she had arrived, and so was not surprised when Sauda alerted them of her approach. She took everything in calmly, keeping an open mind and an aloof emotional distance. The other youth arrived not long after, drawing himself up protectively in front of the nymph girl. These two could be useful in leading them to the witch, Tania decided. Why should they go tramping around in the forest any longer than they needed to? They weren't getting away anytime soon, if she had anything to do with it--which she did. As Aruka began her enchantment, calling up a thick fog, Tania immediately moved into position, ready to spring after the girl, should she try to escape--she was not about to let her get away so easily! Not when they were so close!

Fortunately, she didn't need to move at all, since a moment later, the fog was magnificently dissipated by Chälan. Stars, that nymph had power! An aura of authority shrouded him as he spoke to the two newcomers. Tania felt a shiver creep down her spine at the command behind his voice. Nymphs were truly amazing creatures. She waited patiently to see what the two would do next. But still... she did not allow her position to slack.. just in case one of them decided to bolt. They would certainly not get very far.

Aruka sniffled as Kyuuki growled uneasily, "Calm, Kyuuki," Aruka stroked his furry head, "danael," the nymph word came to her naturally and Aruka paused to rub her throat at the alien word, "but I must go if I am to not get in trouble with the witch!" Kyuuki sneered at the mention of the witch, then he spoke, his voice rasping at first, then becoming stronger and bolder as he stepped forward, "Witsh nu gud! Aruurka iths punisted a lawt!"
"Hush, Kyuuki!" Aruka commanded, Kyuuki whimpered and sat down, "Kyuuki, meant to say that..." Aruka sighed and looked down shamefully, not daring to meet her enemies eyes, "...she punishes me often, for things I've done...and sometimes for things I can't help or things I haven't done..."
"And you shouldn't be treated like that!" Burr stepped forward and held out his hand to Aruka innocently, "I am her guardian and I know she is an emotionally unstable woman, and I think you should run away!"
"No!" Aruka backed up into the shelter of a tree, "I'll serve the king one day and the witch will be proud of me! She's the only one I've got!"

There was a silence, which Dalin soon broke. "You two may not realize this, but the King has put out a decree, offering a reward for whoever can eliminate the witch." He paused to let it sink in. "I think I speak for everyone when I say: we will accomplish the King's behest--and gain the reward--no matter what stands in our way. If you hate the witch so much, then join us! If not... well... we'll have to decide what to do with you two."

Merin spoke up. "Dalin's right. This is your chance to be rid of her. You should take it. ...None of us would be happy with the alternative--except perhaps the witch herself. Don't you see? With us on your side, you won't have to confront her alone."

Chälan was still prepared for anything. He couldn't let them get back to the witch, if they decided to side with her.

"The king....he is-what!?" chaos erupted inside of Aruka and she fell against the tree, sliding to the ground, "this can't be possible! I thought-but...uuuh!!!" Aruka groaned, clutching her head, "What's going on!?"
"What's going on!? What's going on!?!" suddenly the air around Aruka turned frigid and Aruka shivered against the cold, her thin clothing bare protection from the witch's power, "What is going on is that you, Aruka child, are going to toil below me for years!" the witch stepped out from the cover of the trees and glared frostily at Aruka, "You, little girl, have been the problem for years! I could never have asked for a worse apprentice! You little witch, you have ruined everything! Now you'll pay!" revenge made Aruka feel the pain, her heart ached as the witch conjured up the powerful force of lightning, electricity throbbed through the air around Aruka and Aruka shrank back at the immense power, "No!" Aruka cried, throwing her hands out in front of herself. There was nothing she could do.
