Well, in the mythology Loki always seemed to be going places with Thor. I think Thor knew that Loki was cleverer, so if situations called for thinking, it would be better to have Loki around.
I would say that, mostly, Loki is good and just doesn't know at what point something stops being funny. However, in the final days of Ragnarok, Loki sides with the giants. That is something I always felt was strange, because before that he was often with the gods. Maybe it's just because he hates Heimdall?
