I don't think anyone has been ridiculed or ripped on. Though when you have an odd hobbie such as this, you're bound to get a furrowed brow and someone speaking their opinions once in a while. Also though it's all fun and games to you kids, there is a very seedy sexual adult fan base for this. They call themselves furries and you're always going to be associated with them if you call yourselves the same. There are more sexual deviants out there then Teens dressing up as animals for conventions or spiritual reasons. If this is the first time people have shown distaste... The only bit of advice I have unfortunatly is: get used to it. And like I said, To each his own, but you'll have to have a stiff upper lip when it comes to actual Ridicule. What you've seen here was far more mild then what you're likely to see in the real world. Don't get me wrong, I'm a weirdo. But when I dress strangely I expect off colored comments and I put on my big boy pants and I take it.

But when I dress strangely I expect off colored comments and I put on my big boy pants and I take it. I expect the odd comments miss, comes with the territory, hell, being part of subcultures we should all expect them. I once wore a metal plated headband to the mall and got odd looks. I just prefer to defend myself is all. And ma'am, I happened to be 23, so, please don't call me a kid, and I am well aware of the sexual deviant side of things. Sadly, every culture has to deal with people like that, especially the "if people in your culture act like that, so so you" types. Gamers, goths, steampunks, I"m pretty sure we all have to deal with comments like that.

Sorry about the kid thing, that was more or less directed at wolf. Here is a question, can you please start a new topic in the general discussion explaining this whole thing. Part of your problem in the first place is that people don't understand it. I can only speak distaste from personal experiences. I know People who are furries and they're not your friendly neighborhood 9 tailed fox variety. I only know the icky side. When you talk about conventions, I think of the anonymous erotic rampages they attend regularly, because that is what they call them. So my dislike of furries is warranted, but maybe that is only because I don't understand your side of things. Also I don't think anyone ever gets gamers, goths, and steampunks confused with sexual deviants... maybe cyber goths sometimes... I think it's all the rubber... Ironically the only time I've ever truly been ridiculed for something I chose to wear was when I wore this
Cait sith mog costume, which is a fur suit. As soon as I left the convention grounds there was a maelstrom of angry and rude comments.

Heh, awesome! My parents have stopped caring about the way I dress. My mom just doesn't even try to get steampunk, and my dad... well, he's an engineer. He doesn't get why I want to paint nerf guns brass, he's just glad I'm eagerly taking them apart in order to do so.

My parents don't even know that I like Steampunk. Mom would probably like it. Dad wouldn't really care, I guess.
But the essay was nice, I liked it.

My mom couldn't care less what I do so long as I'm not homosexual, on my deathbed, on the wrong end of the law, or doing anything blatantly satanic. If I'd ever bothered to tell her what steampunk was, she'd probably just furrow her brow and say something like, "Uh, ok, that's cool, I guess..."
And my dad, well, he couldn't care less, regardless.
I wanna say I already posted in this thread, but I don't feel like digging through 4 pages of posts. sweatdrop

I mentioned to my mom that when we go antique hunting, I'd be looking for goggles.
I recently showed her Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along blog. Given my history of getting really into things I like, I fear she assumes I want to cosplay. While I can't say I haven't considered it, I'm simply very interested in antique goggles. sweatdrop
I have mentioned steampunk though, I believe. I'll need to formally introduce her.

Absolutely brilliant essay! whee
Heh, my Dad got me into Steampunk. My mum is a goth and Dad's a geek. We go to discworld conventions together and re-enact as Vikings. They're cool with it, in fact, Dad said he'd make me some spats.
I think any parents that don't like steampunk should be a little bit more open, I'm not saying that their bad parents but they should encourage creativity or at least let you get on with it. I can understand why they might be concerned though.

I think earlier someone mentioned someone saying a steam powered auto turret makes no sense.
I say it can, and how?
Of course steam has no memory, it has a memory core or something of the like that receives electricity from a steam power plant. The steam comes in to power the turning and aiming mechanisms via pistons and impellers by steam pressure.
Ok, maybe it doesn't totally make sense, but it clears up the difficulty of steam not having memory X3

For medical reasons I am presently living with my parents and they are already stretched to their edge of acceptance by the fact that I have my 3 sugar gliders with me as well as their mealworms (I raise my own). My dad is highly concerned with the fact that I spend more than 2 hours on the internet a day (which considering I can hardly walk some days, really does NOT seem all that big to me) and my mom is worried because, even though I am not even DATING ANYBODY, she asked if I would give away my animals if a prospective hubby asked and I told her that if he asked me that than he certainly would NOT be my HUSBAND.
I just barely started making plans to make a steampunk bag out of a paratrooper field bag.
I am pretty sure if I announced plans to change my wardrobe or lifestyle to something even LESS like theirs (and the imaginary Prospective Hubby's) while living under their roof they MIGHT die. So I will probably wait until I can at least get back into my own apartment where I can drive, work, and dress with out my parents watching me.
