Mary was silent for a moment, a breeze blowing through the kitchen. She smiled one of her alknowing smiles. "We will. The fates have commanded it." With that, she ushered the Angel out of her house and onto a black horse.
"This is Noche Negra. She will be good to you and not guide you into ditches. Be good, Noche," she patted the horse's muzzle. The horse nodded. Rengeki mounted his own horse, a chestnut mare. "Now, go!" Mary slapped both horses on the flanks and they galloped off.

As always, Silvrendir was amazed at the speed with which Mary got things accomplished, but as soon as he and Rengeki were off he relaxed once more, feeling quite at home on top of the large horse. His uncle ran a ranch, and he had learned how to ride there, and despite being so small he had always felt comfortable on the back of one of these great and magnificent creatures.
He had no idea where they were going, but now that he was alone with Rengeki, he felt that it was safe to ask.
"Where are we headed?" he asked the Manakete curiously.

The Manakete, on the other hand, didn't like riding horses. It was just so... slow, in his opinion. The Prince glanced at Silver. "To the small city of Beist first, then we go to Tomcat country to cross the river. The mayor of Beist won't let us cross the river there. It'll be a day or two before we hit the tomcats." This was all that Mary had told him of course. Like Silver, he'd been completely unaware as to where the woman was sending them. All he was worried about was if it got him killed or not.

Silvrendir's brow furrowed in confusion, and he tilted his head curiously.
"Tomcats?" he repeated. "What are those? I imagine they're not just cats ..."
If they were, then why would they be worth mentioning? No, they had to be something more than just cats ... he just didn't know what.

Rengeki chuckled. Mary sure had kept her mouth shut. "Tomcats are half human half cat hybrids. Some are far more cat than human while others are more human than cat. They are known for their Seers, women who can see the future. During the War, they helped predict what the Emperoer would do. Until, of course, the high Seer died. Even Ise, the leader of the tribe, did not know what happened to his wife," he said softly. No one knew what happened to her. He vaguely wondered if Musha had had a hand in her death; he wouldn't put it past the crazied emperor.

"Oh," Silvrendir smiled, nodding as if he understood. "Like my brothers. I have three brothers like that ... one of them is very smart, one of them was summoned out of a book, and one of them is so cat-like it's funny to watch him."
He chuckled softly, then sighed. He missed his family. He hoped that he would make it back to them someday.

"Eh... I wouldn't be so sure. Tomcats are a very distint race... and are very proud. A tomcat will never lie to you, for their pride says they mustn't. There are rouges, however, who do not follow the pride code. Beware them, for they will kill without mercy," he said seriously, letting the horses do the navagating.

Silvrendir's cheerfulness left him as quickly as it had come.
"Oh," he murmured softly; and then he grew silent, thoughtful. Why did everything have to be so complicated? He had thought that he would be prepared for this by now, after learning a bit about this world from Mary, Rengeki, and the elf he had met ... but at every twist and turn there was something new, something unexpected ...
And he was beginning to be of the opinion that this was a very hostile land.

Rengeki was silent, focusing on the road ahead.
The sun was over head as the pair came upon a spread out city. The horses stopped on a hill outside the outskirst. "This is Beist, the suburbs of Junia," said Rengeki, pointing to the rows upon rows of housing.
"Depend on whether we get stopped, we may make our way out of here by night fall. If not.... it will be tomorrow morning at the earliest."

Silvrendir raised one eyebrow and looked up at Rengeki.
"Stopped?" he repeated incredulously. "Could we not just go around the city then? Why would they stop us?"
He was growing tired, having become a bit lazy during his five weeks of rest, and he was beginning to think it was ridiculous, how many creatures or people were out to get him. Why? What was the reason for all of the insanity? Why was travel so restricted? Why were travelers so feared? If that was what it was.

Rengeki chuckled and shook his head. "If it were only that easy. Beist is a little... prejustice against those of other races other than humans and elves. They aren't exactly the most friendly people these days; pretty stuck up if you ask me. Beist is too big to go around, as well."

Silvrendir sighed. Why did people have to be so stuck up? They were worse than the people of his mother's world, and that was saying something.
"And I thought Arda was bad," he mumbled, making sure his wings were tight against his back, hidden beneath his cloak, so that he would look like a human child.

The pair trotted into Beist during the midday rush. Horses, cars, and people all occupied the same spaces. Rengeki grabbed Noche's reigns and kept the mare close to his horse as they made their way through the packed streets.
They came to a road block just before the town square. Dark blue clad police officers were directing traffic (and beating anyone who tried to go over the blockade) around it. The public didn't seem happy.
"It's just a stupid dead angel. Burn her and let us go through the square!" "Public safety?! This abomination of a round about is hazardist to public safety!"
Rengeki fought back a growl. From where they were stopped, they could see into the square. In the middle was an angel, but she wasn't moving. Her wings had been torn out, a pool of blood all around her. "This is why I hate Beist... Because of that," he mumbled so Silver could hear.

Silvrendir's eyes grew wide and he froze at the sight of the dead angel girl. He tried not to flinch his own wings beneath his cloak ... he rather liked them where they were.
"Do people kill angels and sell their body parts here?" he asked Rengeki in a fear-filled voice, low so that he could not be overheard. "Grandma says ..."
He swallowed hard.
"Grandma says that angel parts can be used for magic healing ... and that some people make a career out of hunting angels down ..."

Rengeki fought to control his voice. "I've heard of it being done... usually those 'crimes' are done much more cleanly than this. And crimes is loosely used. They barely recognize it's murder; they throw the offender in jail for maybe a week then let them out, skat free." The Manakete's blood was boiling and he guided the horses down a side street. He couldn't take looking at that sight anymore.
