Marek couldn't help but laugh when he saw the Warder behind him. "What do you expect me to do? Wack her with my walking stick?" Again, he shook his head, "And Ms. Aes Sedai, you said it yourself, I'm just a cranky old man, I don't know what you expect from me." His gaze went back to the Warder, "He expects me to be violent, and you expect me to be sagely," He returned his view to the road ahead. "I'm afraid that I don't have either to offer, unless you do want me to hit you with my walking stick."

Kiae snorted. "I'd like you to hit certain people with that stick, believe me. And I wanted him here in case someone else decides to be violent. I hardly think a former Warder is going to attack an Aes Sedai, knowing what we can do," she reprimanded the man. Pausing, she privately sighed - someone who might be even more difficult and annoying than Melthin, if he decided to be. "And I doubt you're capable of being 'sagely', unless you pretend to be to get rid of people. I simply want to know what you hear, going around the city with people ignoring you as they so often do to the 'less fortunate'," she said archly.

Marek sighed, "I never retired from being a Warder, I had another job." It wasn't a lie, he technically never retired from being Warder, more of transferred to the Black Tower once his Aes Sedai died... "And I don't know anything of import anyway. As I said, I'm just an old cranky man."

Kiae eyed him suspiciously. "People say things around cranky old men they normally wouldn't because they believe a cranky old man wouldn't bother to pay attention. But if that's how it is, then I will stop bothering you," she said, after a long pause for consideration. Best not to even try, if he was going to behave like this, knowing she needed help.

She glanced over her shoulder at Ethin. "We should be returning to the inn. I'm getting hungry and I'm sure you could do with a rest," she told him, beginning to turn her mount back.

"By the Creator thank you." He murmured under his breath. Though, he doubted that she was done with him yet. Not that it mattered, she wasn't going to get anything out of him even if she used the Source on him...not that he even had learned anything in the first place yet. All he knew was that Shadowspawn were gathering again. Still, to be safe, Marek turned down the alley nearest him. And of course, along with any other cliche' there was a group of rather rough looking youths sitting in the alley, waving around their knives rather nonchalantly, even before noticing him.

Unfortunately for the youths, Marek didn't plan on stopping or turning around. The cocky one, their leader, walked up to him and looked as if he was about to say something that was probably going to be a third rate attempt at intimidation but before the idiot could he was unconscious from a sure strike between the eyes with Marek's staff. In a whirl of movement the other four were as well before they had the chance to hit the ground. Sighing, he resumed leaning heavily on his staff as he continued down the alley.

Esole frowned slightly, her brows furrowed together in thought. It simply was not right for things that were dead to be brought back to life. That was a power only the Creator should have. What Melthin was talking about trying, it went against the very rules of nature. Once someone died, they were meant to stay that way. But she decided to proceed anyways.

"Yes, we will continue," Esole said. She was unsure of whatever it was Melthin was planning to show her but it seemed like something she would not lke seeing. She could not even begin to imagine what it could be. But for the sake of knowledge she had to see. If it could help her quest to bring down the New Order and aid the White Tower, she would look at whatever this was. It was her duty as an Aes Sedai.

He nodded and turned from her, walking through as the wall shifted and opened into a laboratory. Melthin grumbled as he glanced around and adjusted his glasses in frustration. He threw away my preserved trolloc remains. I told him to clean the laboratory, not tidy it up. Within a few moments he was back to his explanation.

"I have been testing my theories with animals and the occasional shadow spawn. I intend not to move to human research for quite some time. After all now that I promised that aggravating Yellow that I will not use corpses, my research has been pushed back by at least a year or two. My goal is to either make a gateway that will allow one to visit those who have left us or to create a weave that will allow all those who use the power to return those unjustly taken from us. Like those who have been destroyed by balefire and those who have died before their rightful time."

The room around them had an empty wooden table with straps on it for arms and legs, a few more bookcases and a desk with papers strewn across it. "I know what I'm trying to do is what most would call a fool's fond dream yet..." Without warning he collapsed to his knee's, a fit of coughing taking him. Damn, not again. I thought I had more time before it would happen.

Quickly dismissing the man from his thoughts, Ethin wondered where she should start his search for information on Melthin. The man was sure to have a great deal of enemies. The man was much too cocky.

"If I may ask, what do you plan to do about the man?" Ethin inquired lightly.

Esole rushed to his side. "Melthin, are you well?" she asked with concern. Such a coughing spell that brought you off your feet was not a normal occurance. Esole patted his back and looked to him for an answer. His secret laboratory was not what she expected. From the way he made it sound before coming in, she expected human bodies to be hanging from the ceiling and maybe even live human test subjects. She was relieved that she was wrong.

As soon as the coughing stopped, Melthin smiled at her. "Yes I am fine. Its just a bothersome cough I've had my entire life. It seems to come around every week on this day like clockwork." He stood and dusted himself of invisible specs of dust. "The reason behind all of this..." He turned from her and went to his desk, tidying the papers and putting them in the drawer to hide his face from her. A sorrowful face he could never seem to hide even when putting on a fake smile. "...is so that I can say goodbye to Anya properly. When she died, all I could do was fret over her and cry out curses and revenge at the mindless Trolloc's that had killed her. I did not attend the burial, I was in the library searching frantically in my rage to find an answer that would give me back my dead wife."

Melthin sighed and turned back to her, his face stony and cold. "I wish to see her one last time to give a proper farewell." He snorted to himself softly and put on his kind smile again. "Listen to me, explaining and going on about my own devices. I must be boring you to tears. If I know Bartello, the midday meal should be done by now. Shall we return back to the house?"

"We'll keep an eye on him and see what he does. I have some spies - for lack of a better word - from the Tower that will do the job for me nicely," she informed him quietly, heading down the street. "We'll see where it goes."

She fell silent until they reached the inn, entrusting the stable hand with her mount before striding into the inn. Mistress Jenal greeted her brightly, seeing Ethin following close behind. "Welcome, my Lady! Your man has already reserved a room for you both, on the third floor," she told the woman.

"Thank you very much, madam. If you could see fit to send some dinner to our room, I would appreciate it. We've traveled for several days and I don't feel up to dining with others right now," Kiae replied, actually hoping to avoid any contact with people as much as possible to reduce the risk of notice. The woman nodded, her words lost to Kiae as she headed towards the stairs, lost in her own thoughts.

"Now we may head back. I am rather famished," Esole said.

Ethin nodded kindly to the innkeeper before silently following Kiae up the stairs. She seemed to be deep in thought and he did not want to disturb her. She would speak with him about it in her own time.

Ethin quickened his pace to the point where he was ahead of Kiae so he could show her which rooms was theirs. It was a simply furnished room with a bed on each side of the room with a grandiose window seperating the two. There was a small vanity in a corner furnished with a few things such as a small wash basin for hand washing and a large brush.

Ethin unhooked his cloak and hung it from the pegs behind the door and placed his swordbelt on the cornerpost of the bed on the left. The one on the right would be for Kiae, unless she had a strong liking for the other, so that if anyone tried to come in the room, Ethin would be closer and more readily able to stop the intruder.

Marek shook his head after he walked out of the alley, lowering his hood, realizing that the Aes Sedai and her pet Warder were in the same in as he was... great. Turning around and backtracking down the quaint alley, gliding over the hooligans who were still unconscious. Entering the inn, looking around cautiously for the interlopers, he went up stairs to his small room, locked the door behind him, and tossed his staff to the bed. "About bloody time, my back is killing me." Taking his cloak off, he stood up straight, adding at least a foot or two to his height, and popping the joints in his back. If it wasn't for the wrinkled skin and white hair and beard, he could almost be taken for a man in his prime. Not bothering to take off his clothes, he fell onto the bed, after unsheathing his staff blade and lying it next to the bedpost. Old habits did die hard after all.

Kiae removed her cloak and hunt it up as well, before sitting on the bed farthest from the door. She had a feeling Ethin would prefer it if she was as far away from it as possible. "What do you think of the old man, Ethin?" she asked finally, staring intently out the window and beginning to unbraid her tangled hair. "And of Melthin? Is there anything new troubling you?" she continued, well-aware of his preoccupation of concern for his other Aes Sedai. It was something she would learn to live with.

Letting him gather his thoughts, she reached into her bags, which she had carried with her, and extracted her brush to try to undo some of the damage traveling had inflicted. Wincing slightly, she carefully tried to work her way through the knots as she waited for an answer.

Ethin tapped his chin thoughtfully as he sat on his bed. "The old man is clearly not the crazy old man he tries to act he is. I believe he has had associations with the Tower. Could be Black or White. I noticed that he is much more observant then he lets on to be so he could possibly have been a Warder. He is definitely a man to be watched and looked into," Ethin said slowly. He hadn't put much thought into the man other than watching him around Kiae.

"Now the matter of Melthin. Everything about him irks me. From the way he carries himself to the way he uses the Power. There is something horribly wrong with him and I have taken it upon myself to find out all of his secrets. He is a man that shouldn't be allowed to roam free. The head of the Black Tower should be informed about how Master Melthin is using the Power. But I cannot contact them until I have solid evidence against the man," Ethin said, anger welling deep inside of him. "And what has been bothering me is that he is so close to Esole. I fear he may corrupt her. She will keep in his company for her own gain but often the personalities of others she spends a lot of time with rub off on her. I cannot let that happen to her. Melthin must be stopped," Ethin finished with a sigh, calming himself with slow, deep breaths.

Melthin gave her a whole hearted smile, an invisible burden on him seeming to be lifted. "Thank you, my dear. Yes let us return." He took her hand in his and led her back to the main room of the house, Bartello bowing at the entrance. "Was my work satisfactory Master?" Melthin nodded to the man as a small frown formed. "A little too well. You threw away the Trolloc skeleton I had hung up as well as a few more trolloc bones." Bartello stayed bowed, knowing his master was aggravated by his actions. "I am sorry Mi'lord, I assumed you had finished your research on them and decided that with all the dust on them, they would be bothersome so I buried them."

Melthin just shook his head and pushed his glasses back into place. "Well at least you disposed of them discreetly. Is the meal ready?" Bartello stood and turned from him, already walking to the dining room. "Yes Mi'lord. This way if you would." Melthin smiled to Esole and gestured her to follow first. It seems I was just over worrying on things. She took it rather well. No jealousy or hatred.
